In Situ Self-Assembled La and Y Nanoparticles Based on Biomineralization of Diatom Frustules to Boost the Electrochemical Performance of SiO2 Anodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Shi-mao Sun,Xing-fu Zheng,Hong-chang Liu,Wei-qi Xie,Hong-wei Liu,Ze Shen,Chen-kai Shang,Can Liu,Yun-chao Li,Jian Zhu,Jun Wang

Using diatoms, a typical microbial system of biomineralization, as a template, La 2 O 3 and Y 2 O 3 are synthesized in situ via biological self-assembly during the cultivation of diatoms in La 3+ /Y 3+ -containing media without any supplements, reducing agents or triggering agents. Then, diatom frustules modified with La and Y nanoparticles (NPs) are prepared via high-temperature reduction and crystallization. Furthermore, it has been used as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries and has excellent electrochemical properties. The DFT calculations reveal that the doping of La and Y changes the energy band structure near the Fermi level of SiO 2 and increases the current carrying density. The diatom frustule SiO 2 anodes loaded with La and Y nanoparticles (DBS@C-La-10 and DBS@C-Y-10) have specific discharge capacities of approximately 1021.3 and 980.7 mAh g −1 , respectively, after 220 cycles. This is the first study in which the mineralization behavior of rare earth elements on diatom frustules is reported and applied to anodes in lithium-ion batteries. This work provides a new option for applying rare earth elements in the field of energy storage.

La/Fe Co-doped CoO as a bifunctional material for supercapacitors and lithium-sulfur batteries: Synergistic regulation of hubbard u/band width and surface basic active sites

Yutong Yang,Lijie Zhao,Ning Liu,Jianjiao Xin,Wanli Yang,Xinyou Zhang,Danfeng He,Fujiang Zhou,Hong Pan

La 3+ /Fe 2+ co-doping tailors U and W of CoO for bulk electronic optimization. • La 3+ -induced distortion reconstructs Lewis base sites to suppress shuttle effect. • Base sites show strong Li + adsorption and weaken S-S bonds via electron injection. • As supercapacitor cathode: 1405.6 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , device energy 93.0 Wh kg −1 . • As Li-S sulfur host: 1161.6 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C, 62.1% retention after 100 cycles. This work develops La/Fe co-doped cobalt oxide (La/Fe-CoO) as a bifunctional electrode material to simultaneously enhance the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors and lithium-sulfur batteries, targeting the common bottlenecks of sluggish charge transport and poor surface reaction kinetics. The performance limitations of CoO arise primarily from its unfavorable electronic structure parameters: excessive Hubbard repulsion energy ( U ) and narrow band width ( W ), which severely restrict redox efficiency and electron conductivity. To address these issues, La 3+ and Fe 2+ co-doping is employed to achieve precise synergistic regulation of U and W . Fe 2+ doping constructs an extended “Co 3d -O 2p -Fe 3d ” orbital hybridization network that broadens W , optimizes charge transport pathways, and substantially improves intrinsic conductivity. Meanwhile, La 3+ reduces the effective Hubbard U through f-d orbital coupling, weakening intraorbital electron repulsion and lowering the reaction barrier. More importantly, the large ionic radius of La 3+ induces local lattice distortion, generating abundant electron-rich Lewis basic active sites on the material surface, which are distinctly different from the Lewis acidic sites commonly reported in the literature. Unlike acidic sites based on metal cations, these basic sites not only immobilize polysulfides by electrostatically adsorbing Li + ions, but also inject electrons into the S-S antibonding orbitals, exerting a redox catalytic effect that promotes S-S bond cleavage and accelerates polysulfide conversion kinetics, thereby effectively suppressing the shuttle effect in lithium-sulfur batteries. This work, through the synergistic design of bulk electronic structure ( U / W ) modulation and surface basic site reconstruction, offers a feasible strategy for developing high-performance bifunctional electrode materials for energy storage applications. Synergistic Hydrogen Peroxide-Driven Cation Valence Regulation and La/O Co-Doped SnS-Based Oxysulfide Catalyst for Efficient Catalytic Reduction of Toxic Organics and Cr(VI) Under Dark

Hanya Zhang,Pengkun Zhang,Zhengjie Su,Dong-Hau Kuo,Qinhan Wu,Ting Huang,Ping Li,Mengistu Tadesse Mosisa,Jinguo Lin,Xiaoyun Chen,Dongfang Lu

A novel La/O co-doped SnS oxysulfide catalyst (labeled SnLaOS) with heterovalent tin states and sulfur vacancy defects is successfully synthesized for effective catalytic reduction of toxic organics heavy metal ions with NaBH 4 in the dark. La/O co-doped and hydrogen peroxide-driven SnLaOS catalyst with suitable heterovalent Sn 2+ /Sn 4+ states and sulfur vacancy defects exhibited excellent catalytic reduction capability. The 100 mL 20 ppm of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and 50 ppm of rhodamine-B (RhB), methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO), and Cr(VI) solution are entirely reduced by 5 mg SnLaOS-3 within 10, 12, 12, 16, and 14 min, respectively, with durable stability. Synergistic transition metal La 3+ -cation and O 2− -anion co-doped SnS adjusted the energy bandgap and introduced sulfur vacancy defects, and the hydrogen peroxide-driven regulated the SnLaOS with suitable Sn 4+ /Sn 2+ states ratio. The sulfur vacancies in SnLaOS provide active sites for adsorbed proton for pollutants reduction, and heterovalent Sn 2+ /Sn 4+ states in SnLaOS facilitates electrons efficient transfer through electron hopping between Sn 2+ and Sn 4+ for pollutants reduction. This study provides a novel efficient catalyst for the water pollutants treatment.

Study on the Performance and Mechanism of Separating La from Light Rare Earth Elements Using Single-Column Method with a New Type of Silica-Based Phosphate-Functionalized Resin

Ming Huang,Shunyan Ning,Juan Liu,Lifeng Chen,Mohammed F. Hamza,Yuezhou Wei

This work develops a novel phosphate-functionalized extraction resin (HEHEHP + Cyanex272)/SiO2-P via the vacuum impregnation method for efficient separation of light rare earth element impurities from lanthanum (La3+) in nitric medium through synergistic extraction. Batch experiments have demonstrated superior adsorption selectivity toward impurity ions over La3+in a pH 4 nitric acid solution. Column studies confirmed exceptional performance under ambient conditions, achieving a lanthanum treatment capacity of 120.6 mg/g and over 98% impurity removal, which surpasses most reported values. Notably, this purification process enables direct production of purified La3+solutions through a single-column system without desorption, significantly enhancing efficiency and reducing costs. Mechanistic insights revealed combined ion exchange and coordination interactions between metal ions and P-OH/P=O groups, corroborated by advanced characterization and density functional theory calculations. These findings indicate a higher binding affinity of light rare earth compared with La3+. This strategy provides a scalable approach for ultra-high-purity lanthanum compound production in advanced optical and electronic applications.

Dual Interface Compatibility Enabled via Composite Solid Electrolyte with High Transference Number for Long-Life All-Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

Mengyang Cui,Shiyang Fu,Shisheng Yuan,Bo Jin,Hui Liu,Yiyang Li,Nan Gao,Qing Jiang

The development of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) effectively solves the safety problem derived from dendrite growth and volume change of lithium during cycling. In the meantime, the SSEs possess non-flammability compared to conventional organic liquid electrolytes. Replacing liquid electrolytes with SSEs to assemble all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs) has garnered significant attention as a promising energy storage/conversion technology for the future. Herein, a composite solid electrolyte containing two inorganic components (Li 6.25 Al 0.25 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 , Al 2 O 3 ) and an organic polyvinylidene difluoride matrix is designed rationally. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculation results demonstrate the synergistic effect among the components, which results in enhanced ionic conductivity, high lithium-ion transference number, extended electrochemical window, and outstanding dual interface compatibility. As a result, Li||Li symmetric battery maintains a stable cycle for over 2500 h. Moreover, all-solid-state lithium metal battery assembled with LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 cathode delivers a high discharge capacity of 168 mAh g −1 after 360 cycles at 0.1 C at 25 °C, and all-solid-state lithium–sulfur battery also exhibits a high initial discharge capacity of 912 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C. This work demonstrates a long-life flexible composite solid electrolyte with excellent interface compatibility, providing an innovative way for the rational construction of next-generation high-energy-density ASSLMBs.

From commercial melamine foam to C-O-M coupled La-doped MgAl-borate LDH/nitrogen-doped carbon composite: a multipollutant adsorbent for wastewater remediation over a broad pH range

Chen Tan,Jing Miao,Kanghui Liu,Aichun Zhao,Xinlong Guo,Linjie Qin

Developing cost-effective adsorbents capable of treating multipollutant wastewater under fluctuating pH conditions remains a major challenge for layered double hydroxide (LDH)-based materials. Herein, we report a La-doped MgAl-borate LDH/Nitrogen-doped carbon hybrid (LaMgAl-BLDH/NC) constructed through a C-O-M interfacial coupling, in which hydroxyl-rich N-doped carbon reacts with the metal‑oxygen layers of LaMgAl-BLDH to form robust covalent C-O-M linkages. This bonding-directed assembly produces a chemically durable and strongly integrated 3D porous network with enhanced charge heterogeneity and improved resistance to acidic or alkaline corrosion. Benefiting from this strengthened interfacial coupling and the synergistic effects of La incorporation, the LaMgAl-BLDH/NC composite exhibits high removal capacities toward structurally diverse pollutants, achieving maximum capacities of 995.20 mg/g for Congo red, 3020.19 mg/g for malachite green, and 151.34 mg/g for phosphate. Notably, compare with conventional LDHs that undergo structural degradation in acidic or alkaline environments, the C-O-M reinforced hybrid maintains excellent performance over a broad pH range of 4–10. The maximum adsorption capacities of the adsorbent for Congo red, malachite green and phosphate at pH 2, 4 and 12 correspond to 79.65%, 87.32% and 58.83% of those obtained at their respective optimal pH values. Mechanistic analysis reveals that electrostatic interaction, ion exchange, π-π stacking, pore filling jointly govern the removal process. Optimization via Box-Behnken response surface methodology further enhances removal efficiency by identifying favorable synthesis and operational conditions. This work establishes a generalizable, low-cost C-O-M bonding strategy for pH-tolerant LDH/carbon hybrids, enabling efficient remediation of multipollutant industrial wastewater.

Preparation, thermophysical properties and corrosion resistance of high-entropy rare earth tantalates (5RE0.2)TaO4 (RE=Y, Gd, Dy, Ce, Sm, La, Yb) ceramics as promising thermal barrier coating materials

Yaochen Si,Lingfeng Li,Ruida Wang,Songting Zhang,Yingnan Cao,Hongyu Li,Shixian Zhao,Hongxia Li,Jing Feng

With the development of high power and high thrust-weight ratio aeronautics and astronautics, aircraft engines and gas turbine technology, the development of thermal barrier coating (TBCs) material is an enormous challenge, which requires both high temperature stability and resistance to molten calcium-magnesium-aluminosilicate (CMAS) corrosion. In this study, five high-entropy rare-earth tantalate (5RE 0.2 )TaO 4 (Re=Y, Gd, Dy, Ce, Sm, La, Yb) ceramics were prepared by high temperature solid state reaction. The phase composition, microstructure, thermophysical and mechanical properties and CMAS corrosion resistance of the obtained high-entropy (5RE 0.2 )TaO 4 ceramics were systematically investigated. The as-prepared five high-entropy rare-earth tantalate (5RE 0.2 )TaO 4 ceramics had monoclinic structure and uniform composition. The five (5RE 0.2 )TaO 4 ceramics all had lower Young’s modulus (135.06∼158.63 GPa), Vickers hardness (3.7∼6.2 GPa), fracture toughness (2.30-2.80 MPa·m 1/2 ) and brittleness index (1.45-2.53 μm –1/2 ) than that of YSZ. The thermal expansion rate and thermal expansion coefficients of the five (5RE 0.2 )TaO 4 ceramics were close to each other but showed higher value than that of single RETaO 4 (RE= Gd, Dy, Sm or Y) and lower value than that of YSZ. The thermal diffusivities and thermal conductivity of the five (5RE 0.2 )TaO 4 ceramics were lower than that of YSZ, YTaO 4 and GdTaO 4 at all temperature. During molten CMAS corrosion, CMAS melt diffused into the (5RE 0.2 )TaO 4 ceramics and then corroded (5RE 0.2 )TaO 4 grains, thereby forming a corrosion area composed of reaction layer and penetration layer. The CaO in penetrated CMAS melt could react with Ta element in (5RE 0.2 )TaO 4 ceramics to generate Ca 2 Ta 2 O 7 in the reaction layer and reduce the content of CaO in the penetrated CMAS melt, which increased the viscosity of the CMAS melt and inhibited the further penetration of CMAS into the ceramics. Based on the obtained results, the CMAS corrosion of (5RE 0.2 )TaO 4 ceramics was primarily controlled by the Ca 2 Ta 2 O 7 formation and the CMAS penetration.

Salt sacrificial template strategy and in-situ growth of lamellar La(OH)3 on a novel PVDF foam for the simultaneous removal of phosphates and oil pollution without VOCs emission

Yunyun Wang,Li Chen,Yinhua Jiang,Xinyan Yang,Jiangdong Dai,Xiaohui Dai,Mingdong Dong,Yongsheng Yan

Applying polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) monolith for phosphates removal can improve the operability of the adsorption process compared with some other powder nanomaterials. However, as the commonly used synthesis strategy, non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) was deemed not environmentally friendly enough since the dissolution of PVDF often involved volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This article designed a salt sacrificial template method to fabricate a 3D porous PVDF monolith, and then in-situ growth of lamellar La(OH) 3 on the PVDF foam was realized to enhance the adsorption affinity to phosphates pollution. No VOCs were used or released during the whole synthesis process. The adsorption for phosphates was as high as 56.2 mg g −1 , and easy reusability of the novel PVDF monolith was realized. In addition, this PVDF-La(OH) 3 foam exhibited good adsorption properties in both oil and water environments, which implied it could not only adsorb phosphates in actual water samples but also separate oil contaminants from water. All these implied that this PVDF-La(OH) 3 foam could be a potential candidate for large-scale industrial adsorption and separation of phosphates. This PVDF-La(OH) 3 foam could be a potential candidate for large-scale industrial adsorption and separation of phosphates.

A self-supporting solid electrolyte membrane with fibrous network structure for solid state lithium metal batteries

Shijie Lu,Xiaorong Chu,Chunli Li,Zhikun Zhao,Jianxiong Xiao,Borong Wu,Daobin Mu

High ionic conductivity and good interface compatibility have always been two major bottlenecks for solid-state electrolytes. Herein, a composite electrolyte membrane comprising poly (propylene carbonate), PVDF-HFP and Li 6 · 3 La 3 Zr 1 · 4 Ta 0 · 6 O 12 is successfully prepared via electrospinning. With the assistance of succinonitrile, the synthesized solid-state electrolyte exhibits high ionic conductivity (1.32 × 10 −3  S cm −1 at room temperature), oxidation potential up to 4.5 V vs Li/Li + and high Li + transference number (0.81). This desirable performance is attributed to the combination of PPC with good Li + conduction ability and PVDF-HFP with excellent mechanical properties, forming a continuous transport framework within the electrolyte. The introduced active fillers and small molecular additive not only benefit to fast Li + mobility, but also reinforce the stability towards Li metal. Li symmetric cell using the solid-state electrolyte can last for 800 h at a current density of 1.0 mA cm −2 with a low overpotential. The NCM811 cell using the electrolyte membrane shows high initial discharge specific capacity (184.3 mAh g −1 at 1 C) and good capacity retention (80.1% after 300 cycles at 30 °C).

Transparent, robust, and anti-fingerprint silicone coating with a three-dimensional cross-linked network enabled by hydrosilylation reaction

Ruixing Gu,Xiao Li,Hao-Yang Mi,Jian Han,Chongzhao Zhang,Chuntai Liu,Changyu Shen

Silicone coatings with anti-smudge, anti-fingerprint, abrasion resistance, and ultraviolet (UV) resistance properties are increasingly demanded for touch screens as the development of artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction interfaces. Herein, a transparent, robust, and self-cleaning silicone coating was developed by incorporating cage-like structures and long carbon chains into a 3D cross-linked network via the rational combination of polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS), PSS-Octavinyl substituted (VPOSS), lauryl acrylate (LA), and 1,2-epoxy-4-vinylcyclohexane (EVCH) through hydrosilylation reaction with the presence of Karstedt catalysts. After introducing sealed diphenyliodonium phosphate (I-200), the silicone coating (PVLE-I-200) demonstrated excellent pencil hardness, anti-smudge, and abrasion resistance, and its average transmittance of visible light reached about 92 %. Owing to the low surface energy carbon chains, the coating showed amphiphobic properties and excellent anti-fingerprint property. The binding between cyclohexyl epoxy and glass substrate contributed to the high adhesion of the coating, which remained nearly intact and slightly reduced surface wettability after 500 friction cycles of sandpaper. In addition, the PVLE-I-200 coating demonstrated UV resistance which could withstand 200 h of UV irradiation attributed to the cage-like structure of VPOSS. The functional silicone coating provides insights into the development of environmentally friendly coatings for touch screens with high transparency, abrasion resistance, anti-smudge, and anti-fingerprint properties.
