A dual-salt coupled fluoroethylene carbonate succinonitrile-based electrolyte enables Li-metal batteries

Chuankai Fu,Yulin Ma,Shuaifeng Lou,Can Cui,Lizhi Xiang,Wei Zhao,Pengjian Zuo,Jiajun Wang,Yunzhi Gao,Geping Yin

Succinonitrile (SN)-based electrolytes are attractive due to their considerable ionic conductivity and high oxidative stability. However, the spontaneous chemical side-reactions between SN and Li-metal restrict the extensive applications of such electrolytes in next-generation advanced Li-metal batteries. Herein, we report a novel SN-based electrolyte SN–DLi–FEC which combines the dual-salt (lithium bis(trifluoromethane sulfonimide) (LiTFSI) and lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiODFB)) and the fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) additive. Compared with other SN-based electrolytes such as SN–SLi–FEC (single salt combined with FEC), SN–DLi–FEC can form a more stable and durable organic–inorganic composite SEI film rich in the B–F bond and LiF on the surface of the Li-metal anode. As a result, interfacial compatibility of the SN-based electrolytes and the Li-metal anode can be significantly enhanced. Moreover, SN–DLi–FEC shows high oxidation resistance, high ionic conductivity and good thermal stability. The LiCoO2 (LCO)/Li battery equipped with SN–DLi–FEC exhibits excellent electrochemical performances at room temperature (RT) and high temperature, and high thermal safety. The novel SN-based electrolyte prepared in this work could be a promising candidate providing better reliability and safety for the development of Li-metal batteries.

Precast solid electrolyte interface film on Li metal anode toward longer cycling life

Chen Fei,Wang Bo,Wang Fei,Jiang Yunpeng,Dong Bengang,Zhao Haimi,Wang Dianlong

In this paper, a precast solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film strategy was explored for Li metal anode with longer cycling life. At the current density of 0.5 mA cm −2 for 0.5 mAh cm −2 of Li, electrochemical performance tests showed that the half cell with optimized precast SEI film had a coulombic efficiency of more than 99.0% after 620 cycles. Cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectrum, mechanical properties, ionic conductivity, scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, etc., were used to analyze the performance of SEI film. The results showed that when 0.04 mol of lithium bis(oxalato)borate was added into 7.0 g of the poly(vinylidene fluoride- co -hexafluoropropylene) matrix as the components of SEI film, the half cell with the precast SEI film showed the best cycling performance. When different kinds of lithium salts were added into the matrix, the morphology and property after curing were different, which affected the tensile strength, elongation, ionic conductivity, electrolyte absorption rate, and thermal decomposition temperature. Moreover, it had also been found that the strength and ionic conductivity were the main factors in determining the performance of the precast SEI film. A precast solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film strategy was explored for Li metal anode with longer cycling life.

Tunable hierarchical porous carbon aerogel / graphene composites cathode matrix for Li-S batteries

Yinglin Yan,Mangmang Shi,Yiming Zou,Yiqi Wei,Liping Chen,Chaojiang Fan,Rong Yang,Yunhua Xu

It had been proven that carbon aerogel (CA) can effectively improve the conductivity of sulfur (S) and suppress the shuttle effect of polysulfides in Li-S batteries, due to its outstanding electrical conductivity and micropore-rich structure. However, the microstructure of CA was easy to collapse and shrink during carbonization, resulting in a dramatically drop in specific surface area and porosity. Herein, graphene nanosheets (GNs) were introduced in CA to reinforce the structural stability. As-prepared CA/GNs composites were fabricated from in-situ polymerization of resorcinol (R) and formaldehyde (F) in graphene oxide (GO) solution. It was found that the mass concentration of the GO solution had a significantly positive effect on hierarchical porous structure of the CA/GNs composites, which presented improve the electrochemical performances due to the combination of micro-, meso- and macro-pores. It is worth noting that the CA/GNs0.1 sample, obtained from 10 wt % GO solution, possessed the largest specific surface area of 665.477 m 2  g −1 and the largest pore volume of 0.912 cm 3  g −1 . Especially, after incorporated with moderate amount of S (58.86 wt %), the CA/GNs0.1/S cathode exhibited the best electrochemical performances (initial discharging capacity of 1501 mAh g −1 at 0.1C and reversible capacities of 471 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles and 341 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 1C). This was attributed to the tunable hierarchical porous microstructure of the CA/GNs0.1 sample. Unfortunately, when increased the S content to 68.39 wt %, the electrochemical performance deteriorated in all aspects because of their sluggish reaction kinetics. These all results suggested that introducing GNs can feasibly enhance the performance of CA as matrix in Li-S batteries.

Safety-reinforced rechargeable Li-CO2 battery based on a composite solid state electrolyte

Wang Rui,Zhang Xuejing,Cai Yichao,Nian Qingshun,Tao Zhanliang,Chen Jun

The rechargeable Li-CO 2 battery has been receiving significant attention owing to its merits of high energy density and the efficient utilization of CO 2 . However, the widely application is plagued by severe security risks, such as leakage, flammability and lithium dendrites growth due to the use of liquid organic electrolytes. Here, a composite solid state electrolyte consisting of polyethylene oxide (PEO) and 20 wt.% Li 7 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO) was prepared and first introduced into Li-CO 2 battery to solve the problems. The composite solid state electrolyte exhibited high ionic conductivity (1.03 × 10 −1 S·cm −1 at 70 °C), wide electrochemical window (5 V vs. Li + /Li), good mechanical properties and excellent flexibility. Ultimately, the Li symmetric cell with PEO/LLZTO composite solid state electrolyte can operate 1,500 h at a current density of 0.1 mA·cm −2 . The assembled all-solid-state Li-CO 2 battery behaved a long cycle life of 70 cycles at a current density of 100 mA·g −1 with fixed capacity of 1,000 mAh·g −1 . Our work provides new perspective to develop rechargeable all-solid-state Li-CO 2 batteries.

Synergistic effect of interface layer and mechanical pressure for advanced Li metal anodes

Liangdong Lin,Jianxu Wang,Rui Li,Chunming Wang,Chenghui Zhang,Jian Yang,Yitai Qian

Li metal anodes as one of promising anodes in next-generation batteries , face the challenges from infinite volume change and high reactivity to electrolytes that easily leads to unstable Li/electrolyte interface and unique dendrite growth of Li. Although mechanical pressure can effectively inhibit the dendrite growth of Li, it also increases the risk of short circuits, because Li metal easily grows into the separator under pressure. Here, an interface layer is introduced on Li metal to block this growth, using Li 3 P/LiCl as a model. Meanwhile, the dense and robust layer also reduce the side reactions between Li and electrolytes. With the helps from mechanical pressure and interface layer , this design exhibits the improved electrochemical performances, much better than that without pressure or without the layer. The full cells of Li 3 P/LiCl-coated Li//LiFePO 4 , show a capacity of 1.69 mAh cm −2 after 1000 cycles under pressure at 3.9 mA cm −2 with a capacity retention of 99.5% in carbonates. The results indicate the promising potential for the pressure effect to be used for advanced Li metal anodes .

Li4V2Mn(PO4)4-stablized Li[Li0.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13]O2 cathode materials for lithium ion batteries

Shu-qi Yang,Peng-bo Wang,Han-xin Wei,Lin-bo Tang,Xia-hui Zhang,Zhen-jiang He,Yun-jiao Li,Hui Tong,Jun-chao Zheng

Li-rich Mn-based cathode materials are regarded as promising cathode materials for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to their high electrochemical capacity and low cost. However, residual Li compounds on the surface and dissolution of metal ions cause severe degradation of the electrochemical performance, thereby hindering their practical applications. Li 4 V 2 Mn(PO 4 ) 4 is a composite cathode material with three-dimensional Li-ion diffusion channels and a stable structure at high operating voltages (>4.5 V). Herein, we modify the surface of Li[Li 0.2 Mn 0.54 Ni 0.13 Co 0.13 ]O 2 with Li 4 V 2 Mn(PO 4 ) 4 . The Li 4 V 2 Mn(PO 4 ) 4 coating layer can not only reduce the content of residual Li compounds on the surface but also restrain the dissolution of transition metals. Theoretical calculations illustrate that Li 4 V 2 Mn(PO 4 ) 4 reduces the Li-ion diffusion energy barrier and provides efficient diffusion pathways. Li[Li 0.2 Mn 0.54 Ni 0.13 Co 0.13 ]O 2 @Li 4 V 2 Mn(PO 4 ) 4 compounds deliver a discharge capacity of 300 mAh g −1 with a high initial coulombic efficiency (84.2%) and an excellent cycling stability (capacity retention of 78.1% after 200 cycles at 1C). Hence, the proposed modification strategy of phosphate-based materials could shed light on the structural design of surface-sensitive electrode materials for LIBs.

Template-determined microstructure and electrochemical performances of Li-rich layered metal oxide cathode

Yuanyuan Tian,Min Chen,Shida Xue,Youxuan Cai,Qiming Huang,Xiang Liu,Weishan Li

This report unravels the dependence of the microstructure and electrochemical performances of Li-rich layered transition metal oxide (LLMO) on the molecular structure of polymer templates for the formation of oxalate precursor. A representative LLMO, Li 1.2 Mn 0.54 Ni 0.13 Co 0.13 , is synthesized by co-precipitation method, and three samples, LLMO-PVP, LLMO-PEG and LLMO-PVA, are obtained with polymer templates, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), polyethyleneglycol (PEG) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), respectively. The physical and chemical properties of the resulting products are analyzed with SEM, TEM , XRD , BET, ICP , and XPS , and their electrochemical performances as cathode of Li-ion battery are evaluated with EIS , GITT and charge/discharge tests. It is found that LLMO-PVP exhibits the best performances, followed by LLMO-PEG, while LLMO-PVA behaves poorest. This difference is ascribed to the various microstructures of the resulting products, which are determined by the molecular structure of polymer templates.

Constructing Three-Dimensional Honeycombed Graphene/Silicon Skeletons for High-Performance Li-Ion Batteries

Peng Chang,Xiaoxiao Liu,Qianjin Zhao,Yaqun Huang,Yunhui Huang,Xianluo Hu

Silicon has been considered to be an attractive high-capacity anode material for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Currently, the commercial application of Si-based anodes is still restricted by its limited cycle life and rate capacity, which could be ascribed to the colossal volumetric change during the cycling process and poor electronic conductivity. We report the design of a unique Si-based nanocomposite of three-dimensional (3D) honeycombed graphene aerogel and the reduced graphene oxide sheets preprotected silicon secondary particles (SiNPs@rGO1). Through simple electrostatic self-assembly and hydrothermal processes, SiNPs are able to be wrapped with rGO1 to form reunited SiNPs@rGO1, and embedded into the backbone of 3D graphene honeycomb (rGO2). Such an intriguing design (namely, SiNPs@rGO1/rGO2) not only provides a conductive skeleton to improve the electrical conductivity, but also possesses abundant void spaces to accommodate the dramatic volume changes of SiNPs. Meanwhile, the outer rGO1 coats protect the inner SiNPs away from the electrolyte and prevent the destruction of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film. As a result, the 3D honeycombed architecture achieves a high cyclability and excellent rate capability.

Highly selective, regenerated ion-sieve microfiltration porous membrane for targeted separation of Li+

Sun Dongshu,Meng Minjia,Yin Yijie,Zhu Yanzhuo,Li Hongji,Yan Yongsheng

A novel adsorbent lithium ion-sieve membrane (LISM) toward Li + was successfully prepared by the phase inversion technique using synthesized lithium ion-sieve ultrafine powder as the precursor, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) as a binder, N , N -dimethylacetamide (DMAc) as the solvent. The key design for the synthesis of LISM is the formation of lithium ion-sieve dropping with PVDF powder to obtain a highly selective adsorbent. The prepared LISM have been characterized. The X-ray diffraction illustrated that the synthesized lithium ion-sieve were purity phase cubic spinel structure, the scanning electron microscopy shown that the LISM with a poriferous surface morphology and lithium ion-sieve equably dispersed on the surface of the membrane. The membrane flux (9.7 mL cm −1  min −1 ) suggested that the LISM achieved high hydrophily and stability. The maximum adsorption capacity is 27.8 mg g −1 in a high adsorption rate towards Li + within 60 min. In addition, the LISM has excellent adsorption selectivity, since the separation factor α is 4.76 with respect to Mg 2+ . Overall results revealed that the LISM as a good candidate for Li + separation and concentration from salt lake brine with a relatively high value of Mg 2+ /Li + ratio.

Gradient Mn-La-Pt Catalysts with Three-layered Structure for Li-O2 battery

Cai Kedi,Yang Rui,Lang Xiaoshi,Zhang Qingguo,Wang Zhenhua,He Tieshi

Gradient Mn-La-Pt catalysts with three-layered structure of manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ), lanthanum oxide (La 2 O 3 ), and Platinum (Pt) for Li-O 2 battery are prepared in this study. The mass ratio of the catalysts is respectively 5:2:3, 4:2:4, and 3:2:5 (MnO 2 : La 2 O 3 : Pt) which is start from the side of the electrolyte. The relationship between morphology structure and electrochemical performance of gradient catalyst is investigated by energy dispersive spectrometry and constant current charge/discharge test. The Li-O 2 battery based on gradient Mn-La-Pt catalysts shows high discharge specific capacity (2707 mAh g −1 ), specific energy density (8400 Wh kg −1 ) and long cycle life (56 cycles). The improvement of the Li-O 2 battery discharge capacity is attributed to the gradient distribution of MnO 2 and Pt and the involvement of La 2 O 3 that can improve the energy density of the battery. More important, this work will also provide new ideas and methods for the research of other metal-air battery.
