Metathesis Reaction-Induced Significant Improvement in Hydrogen Storage Properties of the KF-Added Mg(NH2)2–2LiH System

Yongfeng Liu,Chao Li,Bo Li,Mingxia Gao,Hongge Pan

The hydrogen storage properties and mechanisms of the Mg(NH2)2–2LiH system with potassium halides (KF, KCl, KBr, and KI) were investigated and discussed. The results show that the KF-added sample exhibits superior hydrogen storage properties as ∼5.0 wt % of hydrogen can be reversibly stored in the 0.08KF-added sample via a two-stage reaction with an onset dehydrogenation temperature of 80 °C. However, hydrogen storage behaviors of the samples with KCl, KBr, and KI remain almost unchanged. The fact that KF can readily react with LiH to convert to KH and LiF due to the favorable thermodynamics during ball milling should be the primary reason for its significant effects, as the presence of KH provides a synergetic thermodynamic and kinetic destabilization in the hydrogen storage reaction of the Mg(NH2)2–2LiH system by declining the activation energy of the first-step dehydrogenation as a catalyst and reducing the desorption enthalpy change of the second step as a reactant. The understanding on the role played by KF sheds light on how to further decrease the operating temperature and enhance the hydrogen storage kinetics of the metal–N–H system.

A co-precipitated Mg–Ti nano-composite with high capacity and rapid hydrogen absorption kinetics at room temperature

Yana Liu,Jinxin Zou,Xiaoqin Zeng,Wenjiang Ding

A Mg–Ti nano-composite has been co-precipitated from a tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution containing anhydrous magnesium chloride (MgCl2), titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) and lithium naphthalide (LiNp) as the reducing agent. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), and pressure-composition-temperature (PCT) techniques are used to characterize phase components, microstructure and hydrogen sorption properties of the composite. The co-precipitated Mg–Ti nano-composite contains nearly 1.0 wt% of Ti distributed homogeneously on the surface or inside Mg particles having an average particle size of about 50 nm. Orthorhombic γ-MgH2 phases and tetragonal γ-TiH2 phases are obtained when the Mg–Ti nano-composite is hydrogenated at 75 °C. PCT measurements reveal the superior hydrogen absorption property of the Mg–Ti nano-composite: its maximum hydrogen capacity can reach up to 6.2 wt% within 2 h at room temperature under a hydrogen pressure of 3 MPa. The activation energy for hydrogen absorption is determined to be 50.2 kJ mol−1 H2. The hydrogenation and dehydrogenation enthalpies of the nano-composite are calculated to be −73.0 ± 1.8 and 75.8 ± 4.7 kJ mol−1 H2, close to the standard values for Mg (−74.1 ± 2.9 kJ mol−1 H2). The catalytic effects from the co-precipitated Ti and the tetragonal γ-TiH2 formed during the hydrogenation process lead to extremely fast absorption kinetics at room temperature.

The microstructure, mechanical properties , in vitro degradation behavior and hemocompatibility of novel Zn–1Mg–0.1Sr and Zn–1Mg–0.5Sr (wt%) ternary alloys were evaluated with pure Zn as control. The results indicated that Zn–Mg–Sr alloys exhibited much higher yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), hardness and corrosion rate than those of pure Zn. But their elongation and hemolysis rates were reduced. Furthermore, the hot-rolled Zn–1Mg–0.1Sr alloy presented the superior mechanics performance (196.84±13.20   MPa, 300.08±6.09   MPa, 22.49±2.52%, 104.31±10.18 for YS, UTS, Elongation and hardness, respectively), appropriate corrosion rate (0.15±0.05   mm/year) and excellent hemocompatibility (hematolysis rate of 1.10±0.2% and no signs of thrombogenicity), showing a preferable candidate as the biodegradable implant material .

Enhancing chemical heat storage performance of nanocarbon porous particle based MgO/Mg(OH)2 composite by calcination method

Lisheng Deng,Shusen lin,Linfa Xiao,Mitsuhiro Kubota,Hongyu Huang,Jun Li,Dezhen Chen

The application of MgO/Mg(OH) 2 in heat storage technology has been limited due to slow hydration rate and easy agglomeration. In this paper, nanoporous carbon particle (NCP) as a carrier was used to prepare NCP/MgO chemical heat storage composite materials by impregnation and calcination methods, respectively. The microstructure characterization, hydration reaction, and simultaneous thermogravimetric analysis experiments were carried out on the prepared composite materials. The results showed that the internal distribution of MgO in the composite material prepared by calcination method was more uniform, and the particle size of MgO was smaller. Under the conditions of 110 ℃ hydration temperature and 57.8 kPa water vapor partial pressure, the hydration conversion ratio of the composite material prepared by calcination method after 120 min of hydration conversion ratio reached 93 %, which was 17.7 % higher than that of the impregnated composite material and 50 % higher than that of pure MgO. Under the comprehensive influence of specific surface area, pore structure, and active component particle size, compared with pure materials and impregnated composite materials, the dehydration rate of the composite material prepared by calcination method at 300 ℃ was twice that of impregnated method and 6 times that of pure MgO, and the heat storage density reached 1039kJ/kg. After 10 cycles, the heat storage density still maintained an initial state of 95.8 %. Compared with pure materials and impregnated composite materials, NCP/MgO composite materials prepared by calcination method had better heat storage performance and higher cyclic stability.

Fatigue life assessment of carbon nanotubes reinforced Al-Cu-Mg composite foams via statistics analysis and computer vision

Siran Wang,Zhangcheng Yin,Xudong Rong,Haipeng Song,Xudong Yang,Naiqin Zhao

The unsatisfactory fatigue performance of Al foams significantly limits their engineering applications. Meanwhile, the unique pore structure of metal foams makes it still challenging to assess its fatigue. Herein, we report an innovative strategy for preparing carbon nanotubes reinforced Al-Cu-Mg (CNTs/Al-Cu-Mg) composite foams, which exhibit superior compressive strength (16.17 MPa) and fatigue strength (11.17 MPa). Statistics analysis confirms that the fatigue life ( N f ) follows Weibull distribution, and P-S-N curves were obtained to calculate the theoretical stress level required to achieve the expected N f . Moreover, computer vision is utilized to monitor the fatigue deformation process and effectively detect fatigue crack initiation sites. Notably, the accuracy of predicted N f obtained by this method is exceptionally high (98.32%). This work provides a theoretical and practical basis for designing metal foams with superior fatigue properties and offers a promising bottom-up tactic for predicting the N f of metal foams to prevent fatigue failure. Highlights The CNTs/Al-Cu-Mg composite foams possess the superior fatigue strength of 11.17 MPa. The application of computer vision enables the accurate monitoring of FCIS. A novel exploration into the fatigue assessment of metal foams is developed.

Au/Mg(OH)2: Highly efficient for selective oxidation of 1,2-propanediol to lactic acid with molecular oxygen

Ma Hong,Nie Xin,Cai JiaYing,Chen Chen,Gao Jin,Miao Hong,Xu Jie

The catalytic oxidation of biomass-derived polyhydroxyl compounds provides an efficient and green route for biomass resource utility. Gold nanocrystals supported on Mg(OH) 2 were synthesized by sol-immobilization method, characterized by XRD, TEM, UV-vis DRS, and tested in the selective oxidation of 1,2-propanediol to lactic acid. The gold particle size and the ratio of Au to 1,2-propanediol strongly influenced the catalytic activity. Over Au/Mg(OH) 2 with the majority of gold particles concentrated in 14–18 nm, excellent catalytic performance with 94.4% conversion and 89.3% selectivity to lactic acid has been achieved under 0.3 MPa O 2 at 60 °C for 6 h.

Myriophyllum Biochar-Supported Mn/Mg Nano-Composites as Efficient Periodate Activators to Enhance Triphenyl Phosphate Removal from Wastewater

Hanyun Xie,Runhua Chen,Yuxia Song,Yan Shen,Fengming Song,Bo He,Xiaomei Jiang,Yifan Yin,Wenming Wang

Transition metals and their oxide compounds exhibit excellent chemical reactivity; however, their easy agglomeration and high cost limit their catalysis applications. In this study, an interpolation structure of a Myriophyllum verticillatum L. biochar-supported Mn/Mg composite (Mn/Mg@MV) was prepared to degrade triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) from wastewater through the activating periodate (PI) process. Interestingly, the Mn/Mg@MV composite showed strong radical self-producing capacities. The Mn/Mg@MV system degraded 93.34% TPhP (pH 5, 10 μM) within 150 min. The experimental results confirmed that the predominant role of IO3· and the auxiliary ·OH jointly contributed to the TPhP degradation. In addition, the TPhP pollutants were degraded to various intermediates and subsequent Mg mineral phase mineralization via mechanisms like interfacial processes and radical oxidation. DFT theoretical calculations further indicated that the synergy between Mn and Mg induced the charge transfer of the carbon-based surface, leading to the formation of an ·OH radical-enriched surface and enhancing the multivariate interface process of ·OH, IO3, and Mn(VII) to TPhP degradation, resulting in the further formation of Mg PO4mineralization.

Preparation of Au Nanoparticle Loaded Biochar/Polydopamine Composites for Adsorption of MB and MG Dyes from Aqueous Solution

Li Hui,Shen Dongxue,Yang Zhe,Ji Guojia,Zhang Zhiwei,Lu Xulin,Zhang Jingmei,Zhao Zhongbao

Abstract Au nanoparticles loaded on biochar (PDA-BC/Au) was prepared using adhesion and reduction properties of polydopamine by in-situ reduction method. PDA-BC/Au was characterized by the specific surface area analyzer (BET), the scanning electron microscope (SEM), the transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR). Analysis results prove the successful synthesis of composites decorated with Au nanoparticles in the biochar matrix coating with polydopamine layer. PDA-BC/Au was employed as an adsorbent to remove the cationic dyes (MB and MG) from aqueous solution. The tests confirm that PDA-BC/Au can remove up to 99.0% of MB within 30 min and achieve removal rate over 97.2% of MG after 60 min adsorption. Adsorption kinetics and isotherm models reflect that the adsorption of dyes by PDA-BC/Au has a better fit with pseudo-secondary kinetic equation and the Langmuir adsorption model, displaying chemisorption-dominated single-molecule layer adsorption mechanism. Additionally, after five recycling cycles, the removal rates of PDA-BC/Au for MB and MG only dropped by 3.10 and 2.58% respectively, making clear good stability for long term use. Collectively, the developed PDA-BC/Au adsorbent indicates enormous promise for cationic dye removal and efficient utilization of waste biomass resources.

Noble metal-free XFeCoNiCu (X = Cr, Mg, and Mn) high entropy alloys for efficient ORR/OER bifunctional catalysis

Qing Chen,Ling Shi,Guiping Xu,Maocong Hu,Mao Peng,Zhenhua Yao

The development of low-cost and efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of importance for the commercialization of green and sustainable energy conversion devices. In this work, noble metal-free XFeCoNiCu (X = Cr, Mg, and Mn) high entropy alloys were prepared with a facile pyrolytic reduction approach while the structure and composition were characterized by XRD, ICP-OES, TEM, HRTEM, and XPS. The prepared quinary alloys demonstrated excellent activity and stability for both ORR and OER, which was even superior to that of commercial Pt/C and RuO₂. Moreover, all three catalysts exhibited considerable potential for bifunctional catalysis, with a ΔE gap of 0.659 V for CrFeCoNiCu, a ΔE gap of 0.692 V for MnFeCoNiCu, and a ΔE gap of 0.727 V for MgFeCoNiCu, which was much better than that of the Pt/C+RuO 2 combination (0.723 V). The superior performance was further revealed by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations with projection density of states (PDOS) and free energy change. The strategy proposed in this study provides an economical approach to design and develop bifunctional electrocatalysts with exceptional performance.

Tuning the spin state of the iron center by FePc/Mg(OH)2 heterojunction boosting oxygen reduction performance

Wenlin Zhang,Di Jiao,Lu-Hua Zhang,Fengshou Yu

Iron phthalocyanine (FePc) is a promising non-noble metal catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). While, with the plane-symmetric FeN 4 site, the ORR activity of FePc is generally low due to its low ability to adsorb and activate O 2 . Herein, we anchor FePc on Mg(OH) 2 / N -doped carbon nanosheets building the ternary plate-like catalyst FePc/Mg(OH) 2 /NC. Theoretical and experimental results show that due to the formation of FePc/Mg(OH) 2 heterojunction, the electron spin state of the monodisperse iron active site ranges from medium spin (MS, t 2g 5 e g 1 ) to low spin (LS, t 2g 6 e g 0 ), enhancing the adsorption with oxygen-containing intermediates, thereby improving the dynamics of the oxygen reduction reaction. As a result, FePc/Mg(OH) 2 /NC catalyst exhibits an outstanding performance (E 0  = 1.02 V, E 1/2  = 0.91 V) for ORR, superior to the commercial Pt/C electrode (E 0  = 1.01 V, E 1/2  = 0.85 V) and FePc/NC (E 0  = 0.97 V, E 1/2  = 0.87 V) under the alkaline conditions. This work offers a new way for the rational design of effective Fe N C catalysts with the support of metal oxides/hydroxides.

Synthesis of Dimethyl Carbonate via Transesterification of Ethylene Carbonate and Methanol over Mesoporous KF-loaded Mg-Fe Oxides

Meng-Ge Wei,Hong-Ru Li,Liang-Nian He

Graphical A series of solid base KF/Mg-Fe bi-metal oxides were fabricated via supporting KF on Mg-Fe bi-metal oxides and calcination. When applied as catalyst to dimethyl carbonate (DMC) synthesis through transesterification of ethylene carbonate (EC) and methanol, this material can afford up to 88 % yield and 97 % selectivity toward DMC in the optimal conditions. It is worth noting that the catalyst can be easily separated by filtration and reused. A series of KF/Mg-Fe oxides were fabricated via the solid-state reaction between KF and Mg-Fe oxides. Especially, when 20 wt % KF was supported on the Mg-Fe bi-metal oxides and calcined at 400–600 °C, the solid material with more basic sites than the support itself was obtained. When applied as catalyst to dimethyl carbonate (DMC) synthesis through transesterification of ethylene carbonate (EC) and methanol, this material can afforded up to 88 % yield and 97 % selectivity toward DMC in 2 h under reflux conditions with the molar ratio of methanol to ethylene carbonate set at 8. It is worth noting that the catalyst was easily separated and reused, retaining at least 89 % catalytic activity during the first four recycles. Although an attenuated activity was still observed due to the inevitable filtration loss and dissolution, this solid base can still provide clues to the development recyclable catalyst in green synthesis of DMC.

CuO/M(OH)₂ (M = Mg, Ca) heterostructures with in-situ oxygen vacancies enable room-temperature ultrahigh triethylamine sensing

Ruixiang Li,Shu Chen,Beibei Wang,Xiaodan Wang,Xinyu Hu,Sonia Estrade Albiol,Cristian Fabrega Gallego,Hao Shen,Chunhua Luo,Hui Peng,Hechun Lin

Room-temperature gas sensors are crucial for detecting toxic gases and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Conventional metal oxide semiconductor (MOS)-based sensors, however, often require high-temperature operation and suffer from low sensitivity. Here, we present a one-step mini-mechanochemical synthesis of CuO/M(OH) 2 (M = Mg, Ca) heterostructures that exhibit exceptional room-temperature sensing performance towards triethylamine (Et 3 N). Our results reveal a tenfold enhancement in the sensor response to Et 3 N compared to pristine CuO. This remarkable improvement is attributed to the in-situ formation of oxygen vacancies in CuO induced by the incorporation of M(OH) 2 , as evidenced by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Notably, CuO/Mg(OH) 2 demonstrates superior long-term stability, while CuO/Ca(OH) 2 suffers from performance decay due to environmental carbonation. Furthermore, we developed a portable Et₃N analysis device based on the CuO/Mg(OH) 2 sensor, which enables real-time monitoring with Wi-Fi capability and achieves an accuracy within 6 % error across a 1 to 100 ppm detection range. This study not only provides a cost-effective and scalable fabrication method for CuO-based gas sensors but also highlights the potential of CuO/M(OH)₂ in practical applications for environmental monitoring and food safety assessment.
