A joint mechanism for singlet oxygen generation by diketone-anchored MIL-101: Exciton-mediated energy transfer and photosensitization

Wentao Zhang,Kunrui Wei,Wenguang Huang,Jianghua Yang,Yonghai Gan,Shujuan Zhang

Post-synthetic modification with β -diketone has been proven as an effective strategy to improve the visible light response activities of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Nevertheless, the effects of the anchored-diketones on the excitonic behaviors and photocatalytic mechanisms of MOFs are still unclear. Herein, two MOFs (MIL-101 with Cr III and MIL-101 with Al III ) were employed as prototypical materials to further understand this post-synthetic modification strategy. Diketone anchoring could enhance the photocatalytic generation of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) by the two MOFs in a joint mechanism: exciton-mediated energy transfer and photosensitization. Diketone anchoring induced triplet exciton was found playing an important role in the photocatalytic generation of 1 O 2 . The photosensitization of the anchored-diketone also played a key role in the photocatalytic generation of 1 O 2 . The results here provide a useful guidance for the development of MOFs-based photocatalysts and are helpful to realize the regulation of excitonic behaviors and photocatalytic mechanisms of MOFs.

Acid-Free Synthesis of MIL-101/GO Composites with Ultrahigh Selectivity for Adsorptive Separation of C3F8 from N2

Ziyang Yang,Xicheng Sun,Wenhui Yuan,Li Li

Highlights What are the main findings? A green acid-free route produces MIL-101/GO-0.1, enabling superior C 3 F 8 capture. The content of graphene oxide affects the adsorption properties of the composite material. MIL-101/GO-0.1 achieved a record-breaking IAST separation selectivity of 17,069 for C 3 F 8 /N 2 . What are the implications of the main findings? Overcome the current technical bottleneck of low C 3 F 8 adsorption capacity. Green synthesis coupled with high adsorption capacity opens up possibilities for industrial applications. This provides insights for future research into the adsorption and separation of C 3 F 8 . As a perfluorinated compound with a high global warming potential, octafluoropropane (C 3 F 8 ) needs to be efficiently separated from industrial waste gas, but separating it from nitrogen at low concentrations is highly challenging. To address the common drawback of using corrosive acids in conventional MIL-101(Cr) synthesis, this study developed a green, acid-free solvothermal method for preparing graphene oxide (GO)-modified MIL-101(Cr) composites (MIL-101/GO). By systematically varying the GO doping, the optimal composite (MIL-101/GO-0.1) exhibited breakthrough adsorption performance: its equilibrium adsorption capacity for C 3 F 8 reached 210 mg/g in fixed-bed breakthrough experiments. The predicted C 3 F 8 adsorption selectivity relative to N 2 reached 17,069, ranking among the highest values reported for adsorbents, indicating a significant performance enhancement over the pristine MIL-101(Cr). Mechanistic analysis reveals that graphene oxide not only increases specific surface area and micropore volume but also enhances dispersion forces, substantially boosting affinity for C 3 F 8 . Additionally, the composite exhibits outstanding cycling stability and thermal stability. This study provides a novel eco-friendly synthetic strategy for high-performance metal–organic frameworks and offers a highly promising candidate material for industrial-scale fluorocarbon recovery.

Z-Scheme In2S3/MIL-101(Fe) Heterojunction with Synergy of Adsorbability and Photocatalysis toward Highly Efficient Tetracycline Degradation

Shijiao Sun,Wei Chen,Qiuyang Dai,Pengfei Su,Jijun Tang,Jiaoxia Zhang,Long Lin

With the progress of society and the development of medical care, the abuse of antibiotics has become an environmental problem that cannot be ignored. In this work, a significant improvement in photocatalytic efficiency for tetracycline degradation was achieved through the design of a direct Z-scheme heterojunction In 2 S 3 /MIL-101(Fe), realized by precisely controlling the in situ growth of In 2 S 3 nanoblocks on octahedral MIL-101(Fe). MIL-101(Fe) and In 2 S 3 generate a strong built-in electric field to facilitate the efficient transfer and separation of photoexcited carriers. Furthermore, the enhanced specific surface area of In 2 S 3 /MIL-101(Fe) offers more active sites for catalytic reactions. Simulated sunlight-driven photocatalytic degradation experiments of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) demonstrated a significant enhancement in the performance of the heterojunction photocatalyst. It achieved an 82.2% TC removal efficiency with a degradation rate constant of 0.0113 min −1 , representing 3.05 times and 4.52 times the performance of pure In 2 S 3 and MIL-101(Fe) materials, respectively. This study offers valuable insights into the design of efficient and stable metal-organic framework (MOF)-based heterojunction photocatalysts and holds promising potential for the remediation of antibiotic pollution.

Fabrication of NH2-MIL-125(Ti) modified photocatalytic forward osmosis membrane for treating tetracycline hydrochloride and ibuprofen solution

Xiaochan An,Yutong Gu,Wenping Wang,Jianxiao Wang,Yongxin Cui,Hongbing Luo,Ke Zhang,Liangqian Fan,Wei Chen

Membrane-fouling in forward osmosis (FO) process has limited its application in drug-containing wastewater treatment. Advanced membrane coupled photocatalytic oxidation process has drawn growing interest. In this study, functional photocatalytic thin-film composite (TFC) membranes modified using metal-organic framework of NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) (NM125) were prepared through simple blending during interfacial polymerization process. Due to the intrinsic hydrophilicity and photocatalytic properties of the nano-sized NM125, the modified TFC membrane (NM-6) demonstrates improved permeability-selectivity with a A/B value of 16.19 bar -1 , outstanding light-response functionality (the photocatalytic efficiency is 80.95 % for tetracycline hydrochloride (THC) and 66.76 % for ibuprofen (IBU)), and ∼100 % rejection of THC and IBU in nearly all the FO tests. Furthermore, NM-6 displays excellent operation stability with a 5 % water decline and 98 % water recovery for treating THC-containing feed solution under light irradiation (0.64 kW/m 2 ), while the control membrane of NM-0 showed 22 % of water decline and 85 % water recovery. Our membrane with the property of photocatalytic self-cleaning opens opportunities for developing next-generation anti-fouling forward osmosis membranes.

NH2-MIL-101(Fe)/WO3 heterojunction composite PVDF photocatalytic membrane for highly efficient dye degradation under visible light

Erzhu Sun,Hong Li,Lanjie Xu,Shihao Zhang

In this study, NH2-MIL-101(Fe)/WO3 heterojunctions were prepared by solvothermal method and then incorporated into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes via phase inversion method to fabricate recyclable photocatalytic membranes with high degradation performance. The SEM and XRD characterization results indicated that NH2-MIL-101(Fe) and WO3 were physically combined. Using MB as the target pollutant, the membrane with 30 mg of Tungsten trioxide(WO 3 ) doping exhibited optimal degradation performance, achieving complete MB degradation within 100 min and a TOC removal rate of 85 %. During the degradation process, superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ), hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and photogenerated holes (h⁺), played a major role. The results of UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS) and photoluminescence (PL) spectra showed that the incorporation of WO 3 effectively suppressed the recombination of electron-hole pairs and enhanced visible light absorption, thereby improving the photocatalytic activity. Transient photocurrent response (i-t) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests further demonstrated that the composite photocatalyst with 30 mg of WO 3 exhibited the highest photocurrent density and the lowest charge transfer resistance. Degradation cycling experiments revealed that after four cycles of degradation, the PVDF photocatalytic membrane maintained high photocatalytic activity for MB. This study suggests that the combination of NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe)/WO 3 and PVDF membranes provides a promising new approach for exploring wastewater treatment solutions.

Fabrication of Magnetic NH2-MIL-88B (Fe) Confined Brønsted Ionic Liquid as an Efficient Catalyst in Biodiesel Synthesis

Zuowang Wu,Chong Chen,Hui Wan,Lei Wang,Zhong Li,Bingxue Li,Qirui Guo,Guofeng Guan

A magnetically recyclable and efficient catalyst for biodiesel synthesis was fabricated by confining the Brønsted ionic liquid 1,4-butanediyl-3,3′-bis(3-sulfopropyl) imidazolium dihydrogensulfate in an amino-functionalized magnetic metal–organic-framework composite (Fe3O4@NH2-MIL-88B(Fe)) through a simple and efficient strategy via the amino groups. The catalyst was systematically characterized, proving ionic liquid was grafted in the amino-functionalized carrier, and the catalyst was spindle-shaped with superparamagnetism (7.2 emu/g). The prepared catalyst with high acidity (1.76 mmol H+ g–1) exhibited good catalytic activity in biodiesel synthesis from oleic acid and ethanol with a yield of 93.2%, optimized by Box-Behnken response surface methodology. The fine catalytic performance of the catalyst was mainly due to the combination of the characteristics of the ionic liquid and the structure of Fe3O4@NH2-MIL-88B(Fe). Moreover, the catalyst was recycled without significant loss of activity after being used for six runs and could be magnetically separated in magnetic force without obvious mass loss.

Switching on photocatalytic NO oxidation and proton reduction of NH2-MIL-125(Ti) by convenient linker defect engineering

Youzhou He,Yuwei Tan,Mengyu Song,Qingli Tu,Min Fu,Liangjun Long,Jie Wu,Mengmeng Xu,Xingyan Liu

Photocatalysis technology has been widely adopted to abate typical air pollutants. Nevertheless, developing photocatalysts aimed at improving photocatalytic efficiency is a challenge. Herein, the linker-defect NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) photocatalyst was synthesized through a convenient one-step heating-stirring method (just adjusting multiple temperatures) to firstly realize efficient photocatalytic performances of NO removal and hydrogen evolution . The optimal sample (named 65-NMIL) with a linker-defect content of 32.08% exhibited a NO removal ratio of 65.49%, which was 37.57% higher than that of pristine NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti), and displayed better H 2 -production activity. Through ESR, it was confirmed that 65-NMIL can generate more •O 2 - and •OH under visible light, and the radical trapping experiment further proved that •O 2 - played a more important role in photocatalytic activity. Moreover, the photocatalytic NO oxidation process was also monitored by in situ DRIFTS , it was found that the defective samples could promote the oxidation of NO and intermediates to the final product (NO 3 - ). On the basis of the above-mentioned photocatalytic experimental results and characterization, a possible mechanism or pathway was proposed and illustrated. This work can provide a new strategy for the subsequent defect engineering for photocatalytic MOFs materials to further solve environmental and energy crises.

Imidazolium Ionic Liquid-Functionalized MIL-101(Cr) for the Cycloaddition of CO2 and Propylene Oxide to Propylene Carbonate

Xia Ruixin,Song Jiahe,Guo Bao,Sun Daolai,Lv Jianhua

An ionic liquid-grafted catalyst, denoted as IL@MIL-101-NH 2 , was synthesized by introducing a novel functionalized bis-imidazolium ionic liquid containing carboxyl groups into the MIL-101-NH 2 (Cr) using a simple one-step method. The structural features of the catalyst were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, XPS, BET, SEM and so on, and its catalytic performance in the cycloaddition reaction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) with propylene oxide (PO) to propylene carbonate (PC) was investigated. The results demonstrated that IL@MIL-101-NH 2 exhibited excellent catalytic activity. Under the conditions of 110 °C, 2 MPa, 3 h, and a catalyst loading of 3.0 wt%, a PO conversion of 95.1% and a PC selectivity of 98.7% were achieved. The superior catalytic performance of IL@MIL-101-NH 2 was attributed to the synergistic effect among the Cr 3+ metal active centers, nucleophilic Br − species and hydrogen-bond-donating –COOH groups. In addition, the catalyst maintains good catalytic performance after four consecutive cycles, indicating its favorable stability and promising application potential. Graphical

Magnetic iron oxide/carbon composites derived from MIL-88A(Fe) for efficient removal of polystyrene nanoplastics from water

Weitian Yang,Ning Gan,Jiahao Yu,Siyi Zhao,Hao Yi,Ting Guo,Zuoping Zhao

The efficient removal of nanoplastics from aquatic environments remained a critical environmental challenge. Herein, MIL-88A(Fe) was employed as the precursor to fabricate a series of magnetic iron oxide/carbon composites (M-T, M = MIL-88A(Fe), T = 300–800 °C) via controlled pyrolysis. Among them, the optimized M-600 preserved a spindle–like morphology, with superparamagnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles uniformly embedded in the carbon matrix. M-600 exhibited exceptional adsorption performance with excellent magnetic separability, achieving 97.46% removal efficiency for polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) (pH=7, 0.3 g·L −1 , 25 °C). It worked within the pH range of 2.0–7.0. The efficiency was 63.97% after five cycles, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 69.97 mg·g −1 . The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-first-order model, while the adsorption isotherm was well fitted by the Sips model. Its favorable wettability facilitates interfacial contact, and the efficient capture of PSNPs was dominated by electrostatic attraction and further strengthened by π–π stacking interactions. Overall, this study provides a technically reliable and promising strategy for nanoplastic removal.

Synergistic enhancement of photocatalytic H2 evolution via Fe doping and S-scheme heterojunction of MIL-68(Fe)/ZnIn2S4

Yufei Chen,Luyao Li,Ying Wang,Siqi Wan,Conghui Liu,Xingang Kong,Jianfeng Huang,Changqing Liu,Wenjie Huang,Lixiong Yin

Solar-driven photocatalytic hydrogen evolution represents a promising strategy, yet constructing photocatalysts that simultaneously deliver high activity and efficient visible-light utilization remains challenging. In this work, an Fe-ion-doped metal–organic framework, MIL-68(Fe), was synthesized and employed as substrate template for in-situ growth of ZnIn₂S₄ nanosheets. Subsequent one-pot synthesis yielded hollow tubular MIL-68(Fe)/ZnIn₂S₄ composite uniformly coated with ZnIn₂S₄ nanosheets, effectively mitigating severe stacking inherent to pure ZnIn₂S₄. Characterization confirmed successful Fe-ion doping, which significantly enhanced visible-light absorption. The optimal composite achieved photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 10.04 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 , representing 9.84-fold enhancement over pristine ZnIn₂S₄. Density functional theory calculations revealed that interfacial Fe O and in O bonds facilitate built-in electric field formation within [ZnS₄] layers, confirming successful S-scheme heterojunction construction. This unique structure preserves photogenerated charge carriers with stronger redox potentials, thereby substantially boosting overall photocatalytic activity. This study offers novel approach for photocatalyst modification and demonstrates synergistic combination of ion doping with S-scheme heterojunction engineering as highly promising research direction

Photogenerated hole-mediated oxi-upcycling of polyethylene to dicarboxylic acids over a waste plastic-derived MIL-101(Cr)

Yi Hao,Kaili Wang,Cheng Chen,Xingyu Chen,Rongrong Jia,Ping Cheng,Liyi Shi,Lei Huang

Waste PET-derived MIL-101(Cr) enables polyethylene oxidation. • Photogenerated holes directly participate in PE C–H activation. • A thermally assisted photoinduced oxidation pathway is established. • Polyethylene is converted into recoverable dicarboxylic acids. • Cross-polymer valorization integrates PET and PE waste streams. Heterogeneous catalytic oxidation of polyethylene (PE) into dicarboxylic acids remains challenging because of the difficulty in activating chemically inert C–H bonds. Here, we report a waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET)-derived MIL-101(Cr) photothermal catalyst that enables photogenerated hole ( h + )-driven activation of PE during oxidation. Under 130 °C, 1.0 MPa O 2 , and 370 mW cm −2 light irradiation, complete conversion of PE is achieved, affording aliphatic dicarboxylic acids (C4-C22) with a carbon yield of up to 63.7 wt%. Experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that photogenerated h + directly activate C–H bonds of surface-adsorbed PE through hydrogen abstraction, thereby initiating the oxidation process. The carboxylate ligands on the MIL-101(Cr) surface promote favorable interfacial interactions with PE chains, facilitating effective catalyst-polymer contact for interfacial C–H bond activation. This work provides new mechanistic insights into heterogeneous photothermal PE oxidation and offers new guidance for catalyst design based on photogenerated h + oxidation. Dual active sites constructed in MIL-125(Ti)-derived high stability CuNi/TiO2 catalyst for enhanced RWGS reaction

Wanyin Xu,Yuanhao Chen,Tianhe Gao,Zihan Wang,Wenkang Miao,Peng Wang,Qianqian Li

Successfully tailored a dual-site architecture comprising Cu + /Ni δ+ -O V -Ti and CuNi NPs on the ultra-small TiO 2 support-derived from MIL-125(Ti). • Deeply revealed the defect rich Cu + /Ni δ+ -O V -Ti site promotes CO 2 adsorption, while the CuNi NPs with electron redistribution facilitates H 2 adsorption and desorption of the product CO. • Significantly enhanced the RWGS reaction activity and sintering-resistance. Copper (Cu)-based catalysts hold promise for the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction because of their 100% selectivity toward CO. However, their low intrinsic activity, and deactivation caused by irreversible sintering during RWGS reaction remain persistent challenges. Herein, we report a pore adsorption strategy to simultaneously achieve electronic structure modulation and preserve microstructure stability during the RWGS reaction. Specifically, a MOF-derived TiO 2 -supported CuNi catalyst is constructed with dual active sites consisting of Cu + /Ni δ+ -O V -Ti sites and CuNi nanoparticles (NPs). The optimized catalytic performance achieves CO 2 conversion of 37.1% with CO selectivity of 99.9% and operates stably for 200 h at 450 ℃, placing its performance among the advanced Cu-based catalysts reported to date. Atomic/electronic structure characterization and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that Cu + /Ni δ+ -O V -Ti sites with enhanced charge redistribution capability promote CO 2 adsorption. The CuNi NP sites with electronic interaction enhance H 2 adsorption and moderate CO adsorption. This work provides a rational design strategy for highly active, selective and stable Cu-based RWGS catalysts.
