The novel ternary reduced graphene oxide/1D TiO 2 nanotubes/3D ZnIn 2 S 4 microspheres (rGO/TiO 2 /ZIS) heterostructured photocatalyst with high-efficiency H 2 production capacity under visible light illumination is designed and prepared in this work. In rGO/TiO 2 /ZIS system, the 1D TiO 2 nanotubes are tightly inserted in the interspace of flower-like ZnIn 2 S 4 microspheres, which are further covered by rGO, leading to an intimate contact among ZnIn 2 S 4 , TiO 2 and rGO. The exquisite design of rGO/TiO 2 /ZIS makes it possess remarkable superiority in photocatalysis . Firstly, the unique 3D microsphere structure of ZIS increases the surface area and visible light absorption ability caused by their unique hollow structure. More importantly, the matched CB and VB positions between ZIS and TiO 2 contribute to separate photogenerated holes and electrons of ZIS efficiently under visible light; then, the separated electrons on TiO 2 are further transferred to rGO due to the superior-strong electron-attracting ability of rGO. At last, the thoroughly suppressing recombination of photogenerated holes and electrons is achieved by the mutually-reinforcing synergy among ZIS, TiO 2 and rGO, and thus the hydrogen generation capacity of ZIS is significantly enhanced. The H 2 production amount and rate of rGO/TiO 2 /ZIS (2.0 wt% rGO and 50 wt% ZIS) after 10 h are 4623 μmol/g and 462.3 μmol/g/h, respectively, which is 71.1 times of pristine TiO 2 and 1.6 times of ZIS under the same condition. The apparent quantum yield of rGO/TiO 2 /ZIS (2.0 wt% rGO and 50 wt% ZIS) in 10 h is about 0.6888%. This excellent photocatalytic performance is ascribed to the mutually-reinforcing synergy among ZIS, TiO 2 and rGO, which can be confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoelectrochemical measurements and photoluminescence spectrum. Based on the photocatalytic and characterization results, the corresponding mechanism is proposed.

BACKGROUND Mesoporous double-layer carbon microspheres (DCSs) were synthesized using hollow tin(IV) oxide (SnO 2 ) microspheres as hard template and sucrose as carbon precursor via the hydrothermal method. Sulfonic acid groups (-SO 3 H) were introduced onto the surfaces of DCS by sulfuric acid heating and sulfanilic acid diazonium coupling, respectively, to form two solid acids (DCS-SS and DCS-DS, respectively). RESULTS The transmission electron microscopy images showed that the carbon microspheres possessed a hollow double-layer structure with diameters of about 200 to 300 nm and shell thickness of about 30 to 50 nm. Furthermore, the sulfonate treatments caused no changes in the morphology of carbon microspheres. The nitrogen (N 2 )-Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) results indicate that DCS, DCS-SS, and DCS-DS featured mesopores with an average pore size of 4.5 to 4.8 nm and BET surface areas of 75 m 2 /g, 57 m 2 /g, and 53 m 2 /g, respectively. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared results confirmed that the DCS-SS and DCS-DS contained a -SO 3 H group and their surface acid densities are 4.5 and 4.1 mmol/g, respectively. CONCLUSION DCS-SS and DCS-DS were used to catalyze the transesterification of waste frying oil, and the highest yields of fatty acid methyl esters, that is, 85% and 80%, respectively, could be obtained. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry

Stem cells are an alternative solution for repairing bone defects. Cell migration and homing from the edge of the defect is important for new bone formation. However, the hostile ischemic environment results in limited migration, homing and survival of stem cells. In this article, ferric hydroxide (Fe(OH)3) nanoparticle-coated poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) microspheres (FePLGA) were designed via a Pickering emulsion to facilitate stem cell homing. In the process, Fe(OH)3 nanoparticles were immobilized uniformly on the surface of FePLGA microspheres. The morphology, element analysis and Fe content of the FePLGA microspheres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). Then, these microspheres were sintered to form porous microsphere scaffolds. Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) was immobilized on the scaffolds via a polydopamine coating to induce osteogenic differentiation. The cell viability, adhesion and migration of mouse bone marrow stromal cells (mBMSCs) cultured on different scaffolds were tested. The results indicated that the mBMSC culture on scaffolds containing Fe(OH)3 nanoparticles exhibited better proliferation, osteoblastic differentiation and migration. Moreover, the iron-containing, rhBMP-2-releasing scaffolds could enhance cell homing efficiency and promote bone formation and osteoconduction when implanted into critical size bone defect models of rabbit femur. Therefore, this new porous PLGA scaffold modified with iron and rhBMP-2 promotes bone repair by recruiting stem cells to the defect site and inside of scaffolds.

The design of efficient electrocatalysts for ethanol oxidation is essential for commercializing direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs). In this strategy, a mesoporous carbon microsphere (MC) was first synthesized by inverting the micro-emulsion technique. The MC@Au/Pd catalyst with a particular core-shell structure was obtained by utilizing mesoporous carbon as a core to load the Au/Pd layer. The novelty of the MC@Au/Pd catalyst with specialized core-shell structures lies not only in the high specific surface area inherited from the carbon core but also in the strong electronic interactions caused by the lattice mismatch between the core (Au) and shell (Pd) atoms. Particularly, electrochemical measures demonstrated that the Au/Pd catalyst exhibits superior catalytic activity toward the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) compared with commercial Pd/C catalysts. This is mainly due to the high specific surface area and mesoporous pore size inherited from the core carbon microspheres. In addition, the mesoporous carbon core and Au/Pd shell in the well-organized core-shell catalyst (MC@Au/Pd) influence the catalytic activity for ethanol oxidation by adjusting the electronic structure of Pd.

A composite hydrogel microsphere (LDH/SA/PEI) with a three-dimensional honeycomb-like porous structure was fabricated using Mg–Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) as the matrix material, sodium alginate (SA) and polyethylenimine (PEI) as gel precursors, and a CaCl2/FeCl3 mixed solution as the hybrid cross-linking agent. The LDH/SA/PEI has realized the synergistic adsorption–reduction removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater. The optimal preparation process consists of 1.5 wt % SA, 4 vol % PEI, 4.5 wt % CaCl2, and 0.1 mol/L FeCl3. The maximum Cr(VI) adsorption capacities of 79.6–118 mg/g between 25 and 55 °C are accessed at 12 g/L LDH and pH 2 within 300 min. Kinetic and thermodynamic analyses reveal that the removal of Cr(VI) by the LDH/SA/PEI involves three distinct stages, surface diffusion, intramesopore diffusion, and intramicropore diffusion, which exhibits strong agreement with the intraparticle diffusion model (R2 > 0.95). The ΔG values of the reactions are all less than 0, with a ΔH of 35.3 kJ/mol and a ΔS of 126.8 J mol–1 K–1, indicating a chemisorption-dominated spontaneous endothermic process. Scale-up experiments confirm that 3 g/L LDH/SA/PEI can reduce the Cr(VI) concentration from 20 to <0.5 mg/L within 180 min. This study provides a novel material fabrication strategy with high adsorption capacity, mechanical stability, and sustainability for Cr(VI)-containing wastewater treatment, which has significant implications for anion-polluted industrial wastewater and the functional development of LDH-based composites.

Biochar-based environmental functional materials offer a promising approach for the resourceful utilization of printing and dyeing sludge (PADS). However, pollutant desorption and heavy metal leaching pose potential environmental risks. In this study, we developed a novel PADS biochar (PADSBC) macromolecule polymer microsphere with outstanding reusability and stability. This microsphere effectively activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of sulfadiazine (SDZ) while significantly reducing heavy metal leaching compared with PADSBC. The SDZ removal efficiency was not influenced by the type of macromolecule polymers (calcium alginate (CA), cellulose nanofibers (CNF), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)) incorporated into PADSBC. In the CA-PADSBC800 microspheres/PMS system, 97% of SDZ was removed within 40 min, primarily through 1 O 2 -induced oxidative degradation (62%) and adsorption by CA-PADSBC800 (29%). Additionally, CA-PADSBC800 prevented SDZ desorption for over five consecutive cycles, while PADSBC800 exhibited 25% desorption. The presence of H C O 3 - and humic acids slightly delayed SDZ removal, while C l - slightly accelerated it. Doping CA, CNF, and CA+CNF into PADSBC800 reduced the leaching of Cu and Cr by over 90%, and Ni by over 80%, under both experimental conditions and simulated surface water and landfill leachate situations. The excellent performance of the PADSBC-macromolecule polymer microspheres was attributed to the presence of carboxyl, hydroxyl, and C=O functional groups.

Repair of critical-size bone defects remains a considerable challenge in the clinic. The most critical cause for incomplete healing is that osteoprogenitors cannot migrate to the central portion of the defects. Herein, stem cells from exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED) with the properties of easy attainability and low immunogenicity were loaded into gelatin/bioactive glass (GEL/BGM) scaffolds to construct GEL/BGM + SHED engineering scaffolds. An in vitro study showed that BGM could augment the osteogenic differentiation of SHED by activating the AMPK signaling cascade, as confirmed by the elevated expression of osteogenic-related genes, and enhanced ALP activity and mineralization formation in SHED. After implantation in the critical bone defect model, GEL/BGM + SHED scaffolds exhibited low immunogenicity and significantly enhanced new bone formation in the center of the defect. These results indicated that GEL/BGM + SHED scaffolds present a new promising strategy for critical-size bone healing.

Hydrogel-based dressings are widely used in wound healing. Herein, we report a polyacrylic acid (PAA)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite hydrogel fabricated via self-catalyzed free radical polymerization, with borax serving as the reinforcing phase. Meanwhile, metal-ligand coordination bonding between tannic acid (TA) and Fe 3 + further elevates the crosslinking density of the hydrogel network. Magnetic chitosan microspheres (MCMs) were synthesized by emulsion cross-linking and loaded with two antibacterial agents, namely tetracycline hydrochloride (TH) and berberine hydrochloride (Bbh). The incorporation of MCMs into the hydrogel matrix resulted in the development of a multifunctional composite hydrogel suitable for wound dressing applications. Results demonstrated that the composite hydrogel containing a specific concentration of 4‰ (w/v) borax and 20 mg/mL MCMs exhibited superior performance, including enhanced mechanical strength, improved responsiveness, sustained drug release, and potent antibacterial efficacy. The core novelty of this work lies in the synergistic integration of borax-based mechanical reinforcement, MCM-mediated dual drug loading and sustained release, and the self-catalyzed polymerization system. This innovative structural and functional collaboration effectively optimizes the mechanical stability of the hydrogel dressing and achieves synergistic antibacterial and intelligent responsive therapeutic performances, providing a reliable and high-efficiency candidate for advanced wound care and next-generation wound dressing applications.

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) resist degradation in conventional wastewater treatments, posing ecological and health risks. Herein, we innovatively developed an alginate-encapsulated Fe/Ni- Citrobacter synergistic system (AFC-Syn) for synergistic BFRs degradation in a continuous stirred-tank reactor (CSTR) treating real municipal wastewater. Remarkably, the system achieved sustained removal efficiencies of >90% for Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209), and Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), over 30 days, with complete degradation within 48 h, while simultaneously controlling COD and nutrient levels (>85% removal). In the system, in addition to direct electron transfer between Fe/Ni and membrane-binding proteins, the carboxyl groups in alginate are proposed to potentially serve as electron-hopping sites to enable long-range electron transport. Meanwhile, the alginate-encapsulated Fe/Ni continuously release Fe 2+ /Ni 2+ , which act as soluble electron carriers to accelerate electron transfer—either to BFRs for debromination or to microorganisms to stimulate their growth. Ultimately, the electrons are captured by dehalogenase, cleaving C Br bonds and driving the stepwise debromination. Metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses revealed persistent enrichment of keystone functional genera, collectively accounting for over 30% of the microbial community. These microorganisms activated interconnected gene networks, thereby establishing an integrated functional axis that synergistically links pollutant degradation, electron transfer, and nutrient cycling. This integration prevented toxic intermediate accumulation while achieving complete decontamination.

Highly efficient releasing of hydrogen by aqueous-phase reforming of methanol (APRM) is of great significance to promote the development of stationary and mobile H 2 power supply for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, highly active catalysts with excellent performance of in situ releasing H 2 from APRM still face challenges. Herein, we report a Cu-SP/Al 2 O 3 –ZnO (Cu-SP/AZ) catalyst prepared by carbon layer encapsulated hierarchical porous microsphere strategy, which enhanced Cu dispersion (52.8 wt% loading, ∼5 nm particle size) on Al 2 O 3 –ZnO (AZ) microsphere . The proposed catalyst exhibited high H 2 production rate (base-free) of 64.23 μmolH 2 /gcat/s at 210 °C, which was nearly the same as that of 20% Pt/C catalyst (63.86 μmolH 2 /gcat/s) and 2.6-fold higher than that of commercial CuO/ZnO/Al 2 O 3 catalyst (24.62 μmolH 2 /gcat/s). The characterization results demonstrated that its high activity in APRM could be ascribed to the strategy of carbon layer encapsulated hierarchical porous microsphere as well as coordination of hydroxyl functional group of SP with Cu 2+ .

The use of color microsphere (CMS) is an alternative to overcome the limitation of dye-based ink-jet inks in polyester-cotton (T/C) blend fabric and achieve low energy, water consumption and pollution discharge of textile digital ink-jet printing. In this work, we reported a novel self-cured core-shell CMS ink and ink-jet printing on T/C blend fabric without pretreatment and postprocess, where the core is the copolymerization of styrene (St) and highly soluble polymerizable dye (HSPD), and the shell is fluorosilicone-modified polyacrylate. Particularly, we proposed a model molecular structure of HSPD with a chromophore-polymerizable-solubilizer group, which exhibited a high solubility in monomer of St, greatly improving the color strength of the ink-jet printed T/C blend fabrics. Besides, it can be found that, when 3 wt% the crosslinking agent of St was introduced into the core, the K/S value of printed T/C blend fabrics was higher at 1.57 than that of samples without the crosslinking agent, resulting from the more absorption of visible light by a regular arrangement of microspheres on the surface of the T/C blend fabrics as evidenced in SEM images. More importantly, the fluorosilicone-modified CMS ink printed T/C blend fabric was hydrophobic and the water contact angle (WCA) was 150.1°, providing the excellent dry/wet rubbing fastness (grades 5 and 4), washing fastness (grade 4), hand feeling and air permeability, effectively preventing contamination from cola, milk, coffee and tea. Compared with the conventional dye-based ink-jet printing process, this CMS ink-jet printing process, without the process of sizing, steaming, and washing, reduced the consumption of time, water, electric energy, and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions by 79.5 %, 99.9 %, 91.6 %, and 91.6 %, respectively. This work will provide an important model system for the modulation of CMS inks, improving the color depth and fastness, but also a guiding strategy for the development of the shorter-process low-carbon cleaner printing technology.

Controllable encapsulation of nanoparticles with metal organic frameworks (MOFs) has been an efficient way to impart the unique chemical and physical properties of the nanoparticles to metal organic frameworks and create new types of multifunctional MOF core–shell materials with enhanced properties. Here, a novel ZnO support-induced encapsulation strategy is reported to efficiently fabricate a Pd/ZnO@ZIF-8 core–shell catalyst, with Pd/ZnO as the core and ZIF-8 as the shell. The novel synthesis procedure involves first loading Pd nanoparticles onto the surface of the ZnO microsphere to form a Pd/ZnO core and then coating the core with a layer of defect-free ZIF-8 shell via ZnO-induced in situ ZIF-8 growth to obtain the Pd/ZnO@ZIF-8 core–shell catalyst. It was crucial that the ZIF-8 was in situ formed from the ZnO core in an ethanol solution only containing 2-methylimidazole under mild conditions. This strategy allowed for the growth of ZIF-8 right on the surface of Pd/ZnO via the reaction between ZnO and the 2-methylimidazole ligands, and thus avoided the random deposition of ZIF-8 crystals on the Pd/ZnO core as in the case of the conventional ZIF-8 synthesis solution. Furthermore, use of ethanol as the solvent also favored achievement of the well-defined Pd/ZnO@ZIF-8 structure, since the ethanol solution of 2-methylimidazole was able to keep the balance between ZnO dissolution and ZIF-8 formation. The as-prepared Pd/ZnO@ZIF-8 core–shell microsphere as an efficient catalyst displayed excellent performance in terms of size-selectivity, stability and anti-poisoning in the liquid hydrogenations of alkenes.
