Ethanol electro-oxidation on a carbon-supported Pt–Mo electrocatalyst: a study by pinhole on-line differential electrochemical mass spectrometry

Kyong–Mi Kim,Kyong–Sik Ju,Sung–Nam Pak

The ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) was studied on carbon-supported Pt and Pt–Mo electrocatalysts prepared by the formic acid reduction method following heat-treatment. The catalysts were physically characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The electrocatalytic activity of the Pt/C and Pt–Mo/C electrocatalysts for the EOR was investigated by potentiostatic and potentiodynamic measurements with pinhole on-line differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (PODEMS). The results show that the Pt–Mo/C electrocatalyst compared with Pt/C has higher ethanol oxidation efficiency and, acetaldehyde and acetic acid are majority products during the EOR under the given conditions. The CO2 current efficiencies (CCEs) on the Pt/C and Pt–Mo/C catalysts are 6.9% and 8.8% after calibration of the mass to charge signal m/z = 44, respectively, which reveals that the co-metal molybdenum produces more CO2 for ethanol electrooxidation and promotes the performance of the Pt-based anode catalyst.

Low-cost and fast thermal response Mo-PVA/PNIPAM hydrogel based smart window for monitoring indoor temperature under hot environment

Fan Chang,Xiaochun Gu,Bo Wang,Jingyue Zhang,Zongze Lv,Ning Ma,Xu Zhu,Xinyue Zhang

In recent years, global warming has precipitated a series of challenges to human living comfort. While some techniques can offer mitigation, their energy-intensive nature renders them unsuitable for widespread adoption in underdeveloped regions. To address these shortcomings, a cost-effective smart window with indoor temperature regulation was developed. It was fabricated by integrating {Mo154} with a blend of polyvinyl alcohol/poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PVA/PNIPAM) hydrogel. Based on the temperature induced phase transformation ability of PNIPAM, the composite hydrogel can be used to regulate the indoor temperature. Concurrently, PVA can mitigate the problem of volume shrinkage from PNIPAM phase transition. More importantly, the {Mo154} can reduce the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of Mo-PVA/PNIPAM hydrogel, as well as provide photothermal properties for intelligently sensing the outside temperature. The smart window can display a favorable sunlight modulation property (ΔTsol = 80.8%) and a rapid heating rate response to light exposure. Due to the presence of the {Mo154}, the smart window became opaque to block sunlight when the indoor temperature exceeded 28.9 oC. This feature can keep indoor cooling in the hot summer without any energy consumption. Moreover, the Mo-PVA/PNIPAM-based smart window also demonstrated favorable durability, maintaining its functionality after 100 times heating (40 oC)-cooling (20 oC) cycles, which can support long time usage and suit for the underdeveloped areas with limited electric energy.

Preparation and properties of multiphase solid-solution strengthened high-performance W–Cu alloys through alloying with Mo, Fe and Ni

He Zhang,Xiao-Chun Deng,Guo-Hua Zhang

In this study, high performance W–Mo–Cu–Ni–Fe alloy samples with additions of Mo (0–6 wt%), Ni and Fe (total content: 2.5 wt% and 5 wt%) were obtained through liquid-phase sintering at lower temperature, with the raw material of ultrafine W–Mo–Cu–Ni–Fe composite powder. Ultrafine W–Mo–Cu–Ni–Fe alloy powder with strong sintering activity and uniform composition was obtained by two-stage reduction means composed of carbothermic pre-reduction and hydrogen deep deoxidation steps. Significantly, the bonding ability of W/Cu phase interface and the wettability of two phases are greatly improved due to the presences of Ni and Fe. Moreover, the addition of appropriate Mo content was advantageous to the formation of W–Mo solid solution . All alloy samples achieved higher densification degrees to guarantee that the sintered blocks possess outstanding overall performances. Especially, by adjusting Ni/Fe ratio, the highest tension strength and elongation of were achieved by W-2wt.%Mo-1.75 wt%Ni-0.75 wt%Fe-27.5 wt%Cu sintered block, which were 567 MPa and 10.37%, respectively. Moreover, owing to the presences of W–Mo and Cu–Ni–Fe solid solutions, this alloy also had the highest microhardness and bending strength of 446 HV and 1473 MPa, respectively. As increasing Mo content from 0 wt% to 6 wt%, the compression strength of sintered blocks was improved, and failure strains of all the sintered blocks are close to 100%, respectively. However, even though the Cu matrix network structure is more evenly distributed as a result of the existences of added Ni and Fe, the electronic movement ability of the sintered blocks was reduced, leading to a significant decrease in conductivity.

In-situ construction of Schottky junctions with synergistic interaction of oxygen vacancies in Mo@MoO3 nanosheets for efficient N2 photoreduction

Wenming Ding,Xiaoman Li,Senda Su,Shengbo Yuan,Zhenyu Liu,Yue Cao,Linghu Meng,Yang Yang,Min Luo

Defect engineering is a promising technique that can activate nitrogen by injecting electrons into the anti-bonding molecular orbital of nitrogen through anion vacancies. Moreover, compared to a single component, Schottky junctions can effectively overcome rapid electron recombination, thereby significantly enhancing photoelectron utilization efficiency. In this work, we prepared Mo modified MoO 3 nanosheets with abundant oxygen vacancies by a solvothermal method and investigated the effect of synergistic interactions between Schottky junctions and oxygen vacancies on the photocatalytic performance of N 2 reduction reaction (NRR). The photocatalytic nitrogen fixation performance of Mo@MoO 3 nanosheets (MoO 3 -6) reached 50.78 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 without any scavenger, which was about 3 times that of commercial MoO 3 . The Schottky barrier creates a built-in electric field generating charge transfer channels during the photocatalytic reaction, while the oxygen vacancies trap electrons to activate N 2 , and together with Mo, broaden the light absorption range of the catalyst, facilitating more efficient transfer of excited electrons to the active site. The synergetic advantages of Schottky junctions and oxygen vacancies are exploited in advancing the photocatalytic effect, providing new opportunities and challenges for the development of metal oxide-based materials.

Pure pompon structured Co–Mo alloy electro-deposited from ethylene glycol solution and used as electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction

He Xinkuai,Guo Ruqing,Hu Zhousi,Zou Qingtian,Yang Jingjing,Wu Luye

The co-deposition behavior of Co(II) and Mo(VI) and Co–Mo electro-crystallization mechanism in ethylene glycol (EG) are recorded using cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. These results indicate that the Co–Mo co-deposition is representative induced deposition; Co(II) species can facilitate Co–Mo co-deposition, inversely, Mo(VI) species can inhibit Co(II) reduction and the effect can be enhanced as Mo(VI) concentration increases. Additionally, Co–Mo co-deposition in EG takes place through an instantaneous nucleation and diffusion-controlled three-dimensional growth mechanism. Co–Mo deposits with various Mo contents and different microstructures can be obtained from the EG solution. SEM micrographs present that the Co–Mo deposits with 1.56 wt% Mo present a pure pompon microstructure. Benefiting from the composition engineering by alloying with Mo, as well as the simultaneous presence of a suitable pompon structure, Co–Mo deposits with 1.56 wt% exhibits prominent electrocatalytic durability and activity with a η 10 of 84 mV for HER in a 1.0 M KOH. Defect engineering enabling p-type Mo(S,Se)2:TM (TM = V, Nb, Ta) towards high-efficiency kesterite solar cells

Junjie Fu,Afei Zhang,Dongxing Kou,Zewen Xiao,Wenhui Zhou,Zhengji Zhou,Shengjie Yuan,Yafang Qi,Zhi Zheng,Sixin Wu

One important issue limiting the development of Cu 2 ZnSn(S,Se) 4 (CZTSSe) solar cells is the severe recombination loss at CZTSSe/Mo(S,Se) 2 /Mo back contact, primarily arising from the non-matched potential barrier and inferior electric contact between absorber and weak n -type Mo(S,Se) 2 interfacial layer. It is expected that a p-type Mo(S,Se) 2 can effectively improve the hole extraction and enhance the device performance. In this work, we propose a plausible direction to build up an electrically benign back surface field by in-situ doping Mo(S,Se) 2 with group VB elements (TM = V, Nb and Ta). It is turned out that the generated V Mo , Nb Mo , or Ta Mo shallow acceptors could convert Mo(S,Se) 2 from weak n -type to p-type conductivity and increase its work function ( W F ) and hole concentration. With the contact of p-type absorber ( W F,absorber  <  W F,Mo(S,Se)₂ ), a benign ohmic contact with favorable downward band bending is formed, thereby accelerating the holes extraction and minimizing interface recombination loss. With significant gains in open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) and fill factor (FF), the Mo(S,Se) 2 :Ta device finally increases the efficiency from 10.82 % to 12.72 %. This convenient in-situ Mo(S,Se) 2 doping strategy is different from previous complicated or unstable cases and should serve as a basis for high-quality back contact engineering in kesterite photovoltaics.

Sn2+ reduction to synthesis of the Mo doped hollow hierarchical Bi/BiOBr microspheres for efficient ciprofloxacin degradation under visible light

Peijie Weng,Qing Cai,Linfeng Zhang,Huadong Wu,Kun Wu,Jia Guo

In this study, the Mo -doped hollow hierarchical Bi/BiOBr microspheres are prepared by the solvothermal method with the Sn 2+ as reductant. The prepared composites show a good degradation effect for ciprofloxacin (CIP) under visible light. Especially, the BSM-22 composite show the best photocatalytic activity, with the apparent rate constant k as high as 0.03014 min −1 , which is 26.9 times that of the pure BiOBr. It is assumed that the introduction of Sn 2+ facilitate the formation of hollow hierarchical microspheres structure of BiOBr microspheres and the appearance of metallic Bi on the surfaces. Therefore, the transfer and separation efficiency of photogenerated charges is increased in the composites. Impressive, benefit from the microtopography of the hollow structure, the specific surface area of the BSM-22 (53.476 m 2 /g) is 21.76 times than that of the BiOBr (2.458 m 2 /g). The doping of Mo reduces the band gap of BiOBr (exactly from 2.61 to 1.96 eV) and broaden the photoabsorption region. Therefore, the photocatalytic activity of the Mo -doped Bi/BiOBr microspheres are heavily improved in dealing with different kinds of antibiotic molecules. More importantly, these results show that the design strategies of heteroatom doping, metal bismuth production, and morphology control of the bismuth oxybromide composite can greatly improve the visible-light catalytic activity.

High-performance alkaline water splitting by Ni nanoparticle-decorated Mo-Ni microrods: Enhanced ion adsorption by the local electric field

HuangJingWei Li,Chao Cai,Qiyou Wang,Shanyong Chen,Junwei Fu,Bao Liu,Qingnan Hu,Kangman Hu,Hongmei Li,Junhua Hu,Qiming Liu,Shaowei Chen,Min Liu

Hydrogen production by alkaline water electrolysis represents an effective route for low-cost and clean energy conversion. However, as hydrogen ions (H + ) are the minority species in alkaline media, the kinetics of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is markedly reduced. Concurrently, the transport of hydroxide ions (OH – ) is limited under large current density in alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, Ni nanoparticles-decorated Mo-Ni microrods (Ni/Mo-Ni) are adopted to boost the ion adsorption . Finite-element simulations suggest that a strong local electric field around the Ni nanoparticles exponentially increases ion adsorption towards the electrode surface, which facilitates reaction kinetics and mass transfer for HER at the cathode and OER at the anode. Thus, the Ni/Mo-Ni electrode exhibits a low overpotential of only −24 mV for HER and + 215 mV for OER to reach the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , and can achieve an industrial alkaline splitting current density of 100 mA cm −2 at a low voltage of 1.76 V and stably operate for 87 h. This work suggests a new paradigm in the design and engineering of high-performance catalysts for alkaline electrolyzers.

Xia Xu,Changchun Chen,Lingxiu Shu,Cheng Cheng,Zhonghai Tang,Yifeng Wang,Lin Pan,Zishen Guan

Water pollution can be efficiently treated by semiconductor photocatalysts under sunlight irradiation. In this study, novel S-scheme SrTiO 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 composites were successfully fabricated via a facile oil-bath method. And the synthesized samples were then characterized by various characterization techniques together with Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation. The X-Ray Diffraction(XRD)patterns show that SrTiO 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 composites are composed of cubic perovskite structure SrTiO 3 and hexagonal phase ZnIn 2 S 4 . The High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope(HRTEM)and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) images showed the intimate contacts between SrTiO 3 and ZnIn 2 S 4 are established to form the heterojunction. The photocatalytic activity of the composite was excellent when degrading organic pollutants, which outperformed that of pristine SrTiO 3 and ZnIn 2 S 4 . The prepared SrTiO 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 -33% composite sample was proved to have the best photocatalytic activity, with 98 % degradation of organic pollutants under 32 min. The ·O 2 – is the main active reaction species for the degradation of organic pollutants, which was demonstrated by free radical trapping experiment. In addition, the mineralization of organic pollutants during the degradation process was analyzed by Total Organic Carbon (TOC) test. According to a series of experimental and theoretical calculations, the S-scheme heterojunction formed in the SrTiO 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 composite is put forward for comprehending the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants and the formation of free radicals.

Bifunctional Pt–Mo catalyst for in situ hydrogenation of methyl stearate into alkanes using formic acid as a hydrogen donor

Wei Yang,Kejing Wu,Yingming Zhu,Yingying Liu,Houfang Lu,Bin Liang

Biofuels have generated considerable interest as a direct substituent for fossil fuels due to the energy crisis and greenhouse effect. In this article, bifunctional Pt–Mo catalyst supported on activated carbon (AC) was fabricated for in situ hydrogenation of methyl stearate to alkanes using small amounts of formic acid (FA) as a hydrogen source. A total yield of 75.3% is obtained under 290 °C for 2 h with a small FA/methyl stearate mole ratio of 3.9. Prolonging the reaction time to 6 h results in a total yield of 100%. The experimental and characterization results indicate that the strong interaction of β-Mo2C and Pt over Pt–Mo/AC catalysts give rise to excellent catalytic performance and that Pt active sites are responsible for FA dehydrogenation and decarbonylation of methyl stearate to heptadecane and Pt-doped β-Mo2C active sites catalyzing hydrodeoxygenation of methyl stearate to octadenane. This catalyst is stable during three recycles and is versatile for various feedstocks.

Employing the optimized pre-intercalation strategy to design functional Mo pre-intercalated hydrated vanadium oxide for aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Guofei Shi,Peng Zhao,Pei Gao,Yuye Xing,Boxiong Shen

The traditional metal ions (K + , Na + , Ca 2+ , etc.) pre-intercalated strategy is widely used to optimize the structure of vanadium oxides as the cathode materials for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). However, these intercalated ions with a single valence state between the layers of vanadium oxides occupy the original active sites and merely act as ‘pillars’ without redox reactions for energy storage. Herein, we employ the optimized pre-intercalation strategy to fabricate a series of Mo pre-intercalated hydrated vanadium oxide materials ( x -MoVOH) as the cathode of AZIBs. The intercalated functional Mo ions can not only effectively enlarge the interlayer spacing to expose more active sites for insertion and de-insertion of hydrated Zn 2+ , but also provide additional electrochemical performance through the redox reactions of Mo 4+ /Mo 5+ /Mo 6+ . The finest material (Mo 3 V 15 O 35 ·nH 2 O, 5-MoVOH) exhibits the electrochemical performance of the specific capacity of 430 mAh·g −1 at 100 mA·g −1 and the capacity retention proportion of 95 % after 1000 cycles at 2 A·g −1 . Additionally, the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) further confirms that the enlarged layer spacing facilitates the rapid diffusion of hydrated Zn 2+ . This work provides a novel and feasible way to further enhance the performance of vanadium oxides in AZIBs.

Synthesis of novel Mo-Ni@Al2O3 catalyst for converting fatty acid esters into diesel-range alkanes with enhanced hydrodeoxygenation selectivity

Xincheng Cao,Shiyu Wu,Jiaping Zhao,Feng Long,Shuya Jia,Xiaolei Zhang,Junming Xu,Jianchun Jiang

Al 2 O 3 -supported Ni-Mo as a low-cost and efficient bimetallic catalyst has been applied in the hydrodeoxygenation of plant oils or fats for production of high-quality hydrocarbon fuels, but it is still challenge to avoid the serious cleavage of C-C bonds caused by isolated single-metal Ni sites. Herein, we report a novel Al 2 O 3 -supported Mo-Ni catalyst (Mo-Ni@Al 2 O 3 ) with Ni and Mo sites in close proximity to enhance the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) selectivity of fatty acid esters. Compared with the conventional Mo-Ni/γ-Al 2 O 3 catalyst showing high hydrogenolysis activity for C−C bonds, the Mo-Ni@Al 2 O 3 catalyst exhibited higher HDO selectivity towards the diesel-range alkanes. Detailed characterizations reveal that during the synthesis of Mo-Ni@Al 2 O 3 catalyst, the loaded Ni species were present in two forms after reduction in a H 2 flow, one is the closely contact of Ni and Mo bimetallic sites and the other is NiAl 2 O 4 , which enhances the synergistic promoting effect between Ni and Mo sites and inhibits the presence of isolated metallic Ni active sites, thereby exhibiting the enhanced remarkably HDO selectivity towards target products.
