The semiconductor industry’s rapid evolution necessitates ultra-high-purity N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) as an essential electronic-grade solvent. The development of an efficient coordination material to reduce trace metal ions, particularly Na and K metal ions, to below 1 ppb in NMP solution is a significant challenge. To address this, a novel coordination material, St-DVB-g-ACE, has been developed for the removal of Na and K metal ions from NMP. The material was synthesized by grafting 4′-aminobenzo-15-crown-5-ether onto a strong acid gel resin. The resulting St-DVB-g-ACE-3 exhibited excellent coordination performance for Na and K metal ions, with maximum Langmuir adsorption capacities reaching 20,000 μg/g and 33,333 μg/g, respectively. Of particular interest was the ability of St-DVB-g-ACE-3 to reduce all trace metal ions in industrial-grade NMP to below 1 ppb within a fixed bed column, achieving the stringent requirements for electronic-grade NMP at the G3 level. Additionally, the absorbent enhances the purity of NMP from 99.82 % to 99.84 %, indicating that the material is not dissolved and can exist stably in NMP. Its excellent recyclability and reproducibility make it highly practical for industrial use. Density functional theory (DFT) simulation, complemented by spectral analyses, revealed the interaction force and thermodynamic properties between Na and K metal ions and crown ether ring, and illustrated the interaction between anionic sulfonic group (−SO 3 − ) and metal ions. The prepared resin-grafted crown ether adsorbents are highly effective in the thorough removal of trace metal ions from NMP solution, offering a novel and effective method for the production of electronic-grade NMP.

Metal ions critically regulate microbial secondary metabolism. This study investigated the regulatory roles of metal ions in Shiraia sp. Slf14, an endophytic fungus with exceptional perylenequinone (PQ) biosynthesis capacity. Among eight ions tested, Na⁺, K⁺, Mg²⁺, and high Ca²⁺ (1.0 g/L) markedly enhanced PQ yields, while Mn²⁺, Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺, and Fe³⁺ (≥ 0.5 g/L) exerted strong inhibition. Na⁺ emerged as the optimal elicitor, boosting production to 504.82 ± 8.62 mg/L (+ 57.96%) at 1.0 g/L without cytotoxicity. Na⁺ exhibited concentration- and time-dependent biphasic regulation. Critical innovation was achieved at 4 g/L Na⁺ added on day 4 (early-log phase), maximizing total PQ yield (1836.95 ± 45.21 mg/L, 5.75 × control), while concentrations > 12 g/L or late addition (≥ day 8) suppressed biosynthesis. Component-specific sensitivities were observed among five PQs. Furthermore, Na⁺ activated the calcineurin pathway: stress-induced Cam/Cna triggered calcineurin-mediated Crz1 nuclear translocation, upregulating key PQ genes ( pksI , omef , hydroxylase ). Concurrent induction of ena1 (Na⁺ exporter) and Ca²⁺-ATPase maintained ion homeostasis. In conclusion, our work pointed out monovalent cations (Na⁺/K⁺) as potent PQ biosynthetic stimulators in filamentous fungi and establish the Na⁺-calcineurin-PQ axis, offering a scalable strategy to overcome production bottlenecks in pharmaceutical PQ manufacturing.

Rechargeable sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN)-based room temperature sodium-sulfur (RT Na/SPAN) batteries, which can operate stably at room temperature, are highly sought after due to the high coulombic efficiency, excellent reversibility and cycling stability. However, the practical battery performance of the Na/SPAN system is fundamentally limited by sluggish interfacial kinetics, particularly hindered Na + transport and electron transfer at electrode–electrolyte interface. Herein, this study addresses these challenges through a low-temperature (180 ℃) polymeric carbon encapsulation strategy, which strategically constructs a polyfuran-rich amorphous carbon(AC) coating on SPAN microparticles (SPAN@AC). This synergistic mechanism operates through conjugated backbones that facilitate efficient electron transport, while the dual role of oxygen which providing strong Na + coordination and weak bonding interactions, thereby simultaneously accelerating charge transfer and ion-desolvation kinetics at the interface. These strategies effectively mitigate interfacial kinetic limitations in sodium-ion batteries, resulting in improved cycling durability and rate capability during practical battery testing. Hence, the SPAN@AC electrode delivered a reversible capacity of 400 mAh g −1 composite at 0.2 A g −1 over 500 cycles and 248 mAh g −1 composite at 1 A g −1 over 750 cycles. This study develops a new approach to enhance SPAN’s electrochemical properties, thereby establishing its viability as a high-performance cathode material for practical room temperature sodium-sulfur battery applications.

Titanium oxide (TiO2) has attracted great interest as a promising anode material for lithium (Li) ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium (Na) ion batteries (SIBs). However, the key factors that dictate the Li-ion and Na-ion storage and transportation in TiO2 remain unclear. Herein, we report a facile hydrolysis route to crafting a variety of high tap-density TiO2 spheres with controllable size and hierarchical pores. The Li-ion and Na-ion storage properties based on these TiO2 spheres were systematically investigated. The pore distribution and the size of TiO2 spheres were found to exert profound influence on the Li-ion and Na-ion storage and transportation. The Li-ion storage and transportation in dense TiO2 spheres was dependent mainly upon the micropore distribution and volume and independent of the size of spheres. In contrast, the excellent Na-ion storage and transportation in TiO2 spheres was enabled by the loose structure with a large macroscopic pore volume and shortened Na-ion diffusion length. High tap-density TiO2 spheres (1.06 g cm−3) with superior Li-ion and Na-ion storage properties were produced, exhibiting a Li-ion storage specific capacity of 189 mA h g−1 at 1C and a high capacity retention of 88.1% after 100 cycles, and a Na-ion storage specific capacity of 184 mA h g−1 at 1C and capacity retention of 90.5% after 200 cycles. The ability to understand the critical factors controlling the Li-ion and Na-ion storage in high tap-density TiO2 spheres enables their implementation for practical applications in Li-ion and Na-ion batteries.

Metal sulfides, one kind of electrode material with very high theoretical capacity, have been widely studied for use in lithium and sodium ion batteries. However, there are some problems hindering their applications in electrodes, such as low conductivity and volume expansion. The MOF introduces metals with different coordination strengths into an existing MOF structure, which improves the performance of the electrode to a certain extent. In this paper, Fe/Zn bimetallic MOF rod-like superstructure was prepared based on Ostwald theory. Accompanied by sulfuration, the MOF was effectively combined with MoS2 and GO, and the objective materials Fe7S8-C/ZnS-C@MoS2/rGO composites were successfully prepared. The MOF material provides a good frame and an efficient electron transport path, while the robust rGO wall effectively inhibits the pulverization of materials during the lithium/sodium intercalation/escalation courses. This particular material exhibited excellent cycling and rate capability performance when used in Li/Na-ion batteries. When used in Li-batteries, the electrode material delivered a specific capacity of 1598.3 mA h g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 and remained at 1196.7 mA h g−1 even after about 100 cycles and further exhibited a specific capacity of 368.68 mA h g−1 at the current rate of 5 A g−1 even after 1000 cycles, respectively. As for sodium batteries, these electrode materials exhibited an initial reversible capacity of 1053.6 mA h g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 and the reversible capacity was still as high as 592.2 mA h g−1 after 200 cycles. It is perhaps that this composite material with its particular architecture and composition is greatly beneficial for electron transfer and Li/Na ion diffusion. In the repeated physicochemical/nutrifying process, the appropriate distance between adjacent MOFs is of great help in preventing volume changes and thus improving the electrochemical performance.

High-voltage and low-cost manganese-based P 2-type oxides show real promise as promising cathode for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). But the P 2 − O2 phase transformation and Na + /vacancy ordering results in the inferior structural stability and Na + diffusion coefficient , which further leads to rapid decay of capacity and poor rate capability. Herein, in consideration of the synergetic effects of dual cationic doping, electrochemically inactive Li + and active Co 3+ codoping are proposed to solve the above issues. The novel two-step doping strategy, Co doping during synthesis of precursors via coprecipitation reaction followed by Li doping during solid-state reaction, are rationally developed. As anticipated, the Li/Co codoped P 2-type oxide exhibits the absence of P 2 − O2 phase transformation and Na + /vacancy disordering, which gives rise to an outstanding cycling stability (86.7% capacity retention within 100 cycles at 0.1C) and high-rate capability (reversible capacity of 109 mAh g −1 even at 10C). In addition, the full-cells composed of the codoped P 2-type positive and hard carbon negative show high energy-density, good lifespan and high-rate property. This proposed cationic codoping provides an effective and scalable tactics for modulating the structural properties of high-voltage P 2-type cathodes for advanced SIBs.

To address the issues of poor cycling stability and unrealized theoretical capacity of layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) as an anode material—caused by severe volume expansion during charge/discharge processes—we innovatively propose a "partial carbonization" modification strategy for ZIF-8 templates. This approach successfully constructs a ZnS/NC "dodecahedral nursery" rich in active sites. Benefiting from the abundant anchoring sites provided by this structure, MoS 2 can uniformly and firmly "take root" on the "nursery" via Mo–N bonds, ultimately forming a composite material (ZnS/NC@MoS 2 ) in which MoS 2 nanoflowers uniformly coat the dodecahedral framework. This composite effectively mitigates the volume expansion of MoS 2 and enhances overall structural stability. Moreover, the zinc retained by the partial carbonization strategy, after sulfidation, contributes additional capacity via conversion reactions, further enhancing the material's electrochemical performance. Specifically, when used as an anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), it maintains a specific capacity of 895.64 mAh g −1 after 1200 cycles at 2 A g −1 ; for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), its specific capacity increases from 348 mAh g −1 to 510 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 1 A g −1 .

Plant oil–inspired 3D flower-like Zn 3 V 3 O 8 nanospheres coupled with nitrogen doped (N-doped) carbon synthesized via the microemulsion/calcination strategy are used as anodes for lithium-/sodium-ion batteries (LIBs/SIBs). The synergistic interaction between the unique 3D flower-like structure and the existence of N-doped carbon can provide enough space to buffer volume expansion during the Li + /Na + intake/outlet process and enhance conductivity, respectively. Thus, the material delivers progressive electrochemical performance. Specifically, the Zn 3 V 3 O 8 nanospheres exhibit a reversible specific capacity of 1140.6 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles for LIBs and 113.0 mAh g −1 after 400 cycles for SIBs at a current density of 200 mA g −1 . Furthermore, the Zn 3 V 3 O 8 nanospheres electrode owns rate capability for LIBs such as 933.8, 847.9, 780.8, and 664.1 mAh g −1 at elevated current densities of 200, 400, 800, and 1600 mAh g −1 , respectively. In addition, it delivers reversible capacities of 207.5, 119.2, 74.1, and 42.7 mAh g −1 at 100, 200, 500, 1000, and 2000 mA g −1 for SIBs, respectively.

The development of cobalt-free P2-Na2/3Ni1/3Mn2/3O2cathodes is hampered by poor electrochemical performance, resulting from structural instability during high-voltage cycling. Herein, Li+and F−ions are introduced simultaneously via a simple sol–gel method. The F not only enters the lattice but forms chemically stable NaF on the surface. The modified electrode delivered significantly better electrochemical performance than the pristine one, including much-enhanced capacity retention (64% vs. 36%, 100 cycles) at 0.5 C and a four-time higher capacity output at 10 C. The ex situ XRD and in situ Raman analysis revealed cyclability enhancement mechanisms in terms of inhibiting the P2–O2 phase transition and Na+/vacancy ordering. The conductivity measurements (based on AC impedance and DC polarization) and GITT analysis proved, on both bulk material and electrode levels, that Na+conduction and, thus, rate performance is notably promoted by doping. The individual contribution of Li and F to the overall performance improvement was also discussed. Furthermore, a solid-state sodium-metal battery was successfully demonstrated with the modified cathode. The above results verify that Li+/F−incorporation can enable enhancements in both cyclability and rate capability of the P2-Na2/3Ni1/3Mn2/3O2cathodes and are expected to provide a new perspective for the rational design of high-performance layered oxide cathode materials for progressive sodium-ion batteries.

MoS2 material is considered as a promising anode material candidate in Na-ion batteries (NIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity and layered structure. However, MoS2 nanosheets usually tend to restack or aggregate during the synthesis and cycling process, which makes the advantages of the separated nanosheets disappear. Here, we present a PVP-assisted synthesis for growing long hierarchical MoS2 nanofibers with a length up to 74.5 μm, which were further assembled from intercrossed curly nanosheets with expanded (002) interlayer spacings in the range of 0.62 nm to 1.14 nm. Such architectural design simultaneously combines multiple-scale structural features that are desired for Na-ion storage. On the one hand, the nanosheets can provide a large surface area which is in contact with the electrolyte, a short Na-ion diffusion pathway from the lateral side and facile Na-ion insertion and extraction through the expanded (002) interlayer; on the other hand, the hierarchical MoS2 nanofibers possess a one dimensional structure and a suitable amount of carbon, which can both serve as an electrical highway and prevent them from restacking, resulting in an enhanced electrochemical performance. When used as an anode in NIBs, they demonstrated excellent cycling performance (537 mA h g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 after 200 cycles, and 370 mA h g−1 at 2 A g−1 over 200 cycles) and outstanding rate capability (329 mA h g−1 at 10 A g−1).

Protonation and alkali-metal cation adduction are the most important ionization processes in soft-ionization mass spectrometry. Studies on the fragmentation mechanism of protonated and alkali-metal-cationized compounds in tandem mass spectrometry are essential and helpful for structural analysis. In some cases, it was often observed that a compound attached by different alkali-metal cations (or proton) exhibits similar fragmentation patterns but the relative abundances of product ions are different. This difference was considered to derive from the different electrostatic interactions of alkali-metal cations (or the bonded effect of proton) with the analyte. The alkali-metal cation with a smaller ionic radius shows stronger electrostatic interaction with the molecule because of its higher charge density. In addition, the bonded effect of the proton is stronger than the electrostatic interaction of the alkali-metal cation. In the present study, which used McLafferty-type rearrangements of even-electron ions ([M + Cat] + , Cat = H, Li, Na, K) as model reactions, the effect of cation size in mass spectrometric fragmentation reactions is highlighted. These considerations were also successfully applied to interpret the similar but distinct fragmentation behavior of proton and alkali-metal cation adducts of a synthetic compound (2-(acetamido(phenyl)methyl)-3-oxobutanoate) and a drug (entecavir).

In this work, a flexible and self-supporting P-doped carbon cloth (FPCC), which is composed of interwoven mesh of hollow microtubules with porous carbon walls, is prepared via a vacuum-sealed doping technology by employing the commercially available cotton cloth as sustainable and scalable raw material. When directly used as binder-free anode for sodium-ion batteries, the as-prepared FPCC delivers superior Na-storage properties in terms of specific capacity up to 242.4 mA h g–1, high initial Coulombic efficiency of ∼72%, excellent rate capabilities (e.g., 123.1 mA h g–1 at a high current of 1 A g–1), and long-term cycle life (e.g., ∼88% capacity retention after even 600 cycles). All these electrochemical data are better than the undoped carbon cloth control, demonstrating the significance of P-doping to enhance the Na-storage properties of cotton-derived carbon anode. Furthermore, the technologies of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and galvanostatic intermittent titration technique are implemented to disclose the decrease of charge transfer resistance and improvement of Na-migration kinetics, respectively.
