Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are considered promising candidates for next-generation lithium metal batteries due to their superior flexibility, processability, and electrode compatibility. However, the practical application of poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)-based SPEs is hindered by high crystallinity, strong Li+ coordination with fluorine atoms, and unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation. Herein, we propose a molecular-level modification strategy by incorporating polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) as a structural analog into the PVDF-HFP matrix. PVDC exhibits excellent compatibility with PVDF-HFP due to their similar – CX2–CH2– chain structures, enabling uniform dispersion without phase separation. The modification mechanism operates through three synergistic effects: (1) steric hindrance from PVDC insertion disrupts ordered chain packing, reducing α-phase crystallinity and promoting β-phase formation; (2) the weak Lewis basicity of −Cl groups competitively coordinates with Li+, facilitating lithium salt dissociation; (3) −Cl participates in forming a LiCl–LiF composite SEI with enhanced ionic conductivity and mechanical stability. The optimized PH–PVDC-10% SPE delivers a high ionic conductivity of 7.07 × 10–4 S cm–1, a lithium-ion transference number of 0.62, and excellent interfacial stability, enabling Li||Li symmetric cells to cycle stably for over 3000 h. Furthermore, Li||LFP cells exhibit a capacity retention of 97.5% after 300 cycles at 0.5 C, while Li||NCM811 cells achieve 90.3% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 0.2 C. This work provides a simple, scalable, and effective strategy for designing high-performance SPEs toward practical solid-state lithium metal batteries.

PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride) membrane separation is a classic technique to screen macro-molecular pollutants via steric exclusion mechanism, but unable to deal with small molecules, e.g. dyes and antibiotics. Herein, we develop a novel PVDF piezocatalytic membrane with manipulated spherical and polar structure directly through TIPS (thermally induced phase separation) without additional mechanical or electrical poling, showing excellent self-catalytic decontamination and self-cleaning fouling resistance without external addition of oxidants. By using a polar, environmentally benign compound caprolactone as a diluent, carbon nanotube as a polar inducer, a PVDF/SWCNTs (Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes) piezoelectric membrane with a high β-phase content of 93% was prepared. The quench temperature, quench bath composition, doping content of SWCNTs have a substantial manipulation effect on β-phase generation, piezoelectric property and catalytic performance. The optimal membrane achieved a competitive catalytic efficiency of 96.8% within 40 min, with a kinetic rate constant of 0.095 min −1 , a piezoelectric coefficient d 33 of 41.6 pC N −1 , and a flux recovery rate of 89.6%. This study demonstrates that the PVDF piezoelectric membrane with spherical and polar structure via TIPS provides an effective active separation pathway for water remediation in contrast to traditional micro-or ultra-filtration membranes.

Polymer composites have emerged as promising tunable dielectric material in microwave devices owing to their low density, flexibility, and ease of processing compared to rigid ceramic counterparts. Nevertheless, their progress is constrained by limited tunability ( T u ) and the requirement of high bias fields. Herein, we integrate ferroelectric Barium Strontium Titanate (BST) with electrically nonlinear Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) in core-shell configuration to achieve high T u under ultra-low bias. The resulting nanocomposite exhibited high T u of 38.92% at an exceptionally low DC bias field of 0.23 V cm -1 , representing a 1.72-fold improvement over conventional systems. Importantly, dielectric loss (tan δ ) is well-suppressed from 273.76 to 2.27 (at 100 kHz) due to effective charge trapping at the core-shell interface, which prevents direct electron hopping between conductive pathways. Furthermore, the dielectric breakdown strength ( E b ) reaches 253.9 kV cm -1 at 1 vol% loading, nearly double of the uncoated conductive filler system (129.03 kV cm -1 ). These results highlight a new paradigm for combining nonlinear and ferroelectric materials within a core-shell architecture to realize low-bias, high-performance dielectric nanocomposites, offering significant potential for flexible electronics and next-generation microwave systems.

To construct a pervaporation alcohol-water separation membrane with high adsorption and dissolution selectivity, as well as fast internal transport channels, covalent organic framework (COF)/PDMS mixed matrix membranes were prepared. The selected hydrophobic fluorine-containing COF, TAPB-TFA, is purely organic, has a uniform spherical shape, and exhibits excellent interfacial compatibility with the PDMS. The TAPB-TFA/PDMS coating was casted into the porous PVDF membrane to form a compact inner selective layer. Meanwhile, the rough surface with honeycomb-like folds of the PVDF membrane was quite preserved, enhancing the hydrophobicity of the membrane surface. This structure provides numerous solvent adsorption sites for alcohols while effectively inhibiting the passage of water. Simultaneously, TAPB-TFA has a well-defined pore structure, offering numerous channels for the rapid transport of alcohols, thereby enhancing their diffusion rates. The flux of the optimized TAPB-TFA/PDMS@PVDF membrane was 4.52 ± 0.13 kg·m −2 ·h −1 with a high separation factor of 10.9 ± 0.32 for 5 wt% ethanol aqueous solution.

Two-dimensional (2D) piezoelectric semiconductors, specifically molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ), have emerged as premier candidates for next-generation nanoscale tactile sensors due to their exceptional electron mobility, high polarization rates, and low power consumption. However, the inherent rigidity and structural brittleness of MoS 2 hinder its seamless integration into flexible, wearable platforms. Herein, we report a synergistic strategy combining mechanical ball milling and electrospinning to fabricate high-performance MoS 2 carbon nanocrystal/polyvinylidene fluoride (MoS 2 -CNCs/PVDF) nanofibrous membranes on textile substrates. By utilizing polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a macromolecular surfactant, we achieved superior filler dispersion and optimized interfacial bonding within the polymer matrix. At an optimal PVP concentration of 10%, the composite exhibits a piezoelectric coefficient ( d 33 ) of 34 pC/N—a 1.3-fold increase over pristine PVDF and delivers a peak output voltage of 2.12 V under a 0.5 N load with high linearity ( R 2 > 0.93). Furthermore, the hierarchical composite architecture yields robust mechanical properties, including a tensile strength of 19 MPa and 100% elongation at break, effectively overcoming the traditional brittleness of inorganic MoS 2 systems. Integrated into elastic textiles, the resulting sensor enables high-fidelity real-time monitoring of physiological signals, including radial pulse, respiratory rhythms, and joint kinematics. This work provides a scalable pathway for health diagnostics and human-machine interaction.

PEGDME and Li 3 OCl synergistically reduce the crystallinity of PVDF and create additional Li + transport pathways. • The modified PVDF electrolyte exhibits an ionic conductivity of 8.65 × 10 −4 S cm −1 and a Li + transference number of 0.55 at 25 °C. • The assembled LFP cell maintains 80.2% capacity after 500 cycles at 0.5C and 25 °C Owing to superior flexibility and processability, polymer electrolytes have received considerable research attention. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is a promising electrolyte candidate with high dielectric constant and tunable chain structure, Nevertheless, in lithium metal batteries (LMBs), its high crystallinity results in insufficient Li-ion conductivity, while its inherent porous structure tends to induce uneven Li deposition, thereby causing poor electrolyte-electrode interfacial stability. Herein, a novel PVDF-based composite solid electrolyte is developed by introducing the plasticizer poly(ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether (PEGDME) and Li-rich anti-perovskite Li 3 OCl as fillers. Li 3 OCl can complex with PVDF and induce deprotonation, offering an extra Li + transport pathway, while the synergistic effect between PEGDME and Li 3 OCl effectively reduces PVDF crystallinity and promotes chain mobility. This synergistic design suppresses polymer crystallization, introduces additional Li + conduction channels, and prevents Li dendrites, leading to markedly improved Li + transference number and ionic conductivity, along with a stabilized electrolyte–electrode interface. At 0.5C and 25 °C, the Li | PVDF-LiTFSI-PEGDME-1%Li 3 OCl | LiFePO 4 cell exhibits a capacity retention of 80. 2% after 500 cycles. This research provides an innovative strategy for constructing solid electrolytes with favorable interfacial compatibility and superior ionic conductivity for high-performance LMBs. This study used a solution casting method to prepare a composite polymer solid electrolyte with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as the polymer, polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether (PEGDME) as the small molecule plasticizer, and lithium rich perovskite resistant Li 3 OCl as the inorganic filler. PEGDME and Li 3 OCl inhibited the crystallization of PVDF, opening up additional channels for Li + transport and significantly improving the efficiency of Li + transport. Meanwhile, the introduction of Li 3 OCl effectively suppressed the growth of lithium dendrites and improved the electrode electrolyte interface problem. After 500 cycles at 0.5C and 25 °C, the capacity retention rate of the assembled LiFePO 4 (LFP) battery reached 80.2%. Download: Download high-res image (182KB) Download: Download full-size image

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based piezoelectric materials show strong potential for use in flexible sensors and actuators. However, increasing the proportion of the electroactive β phase and improving interfacial compatibility with inorganic fillers remain major challenges. In this work, an interfacial transition-layer strategy is proposed using mesoporous SiO2 (mSiO2) is used to coat barium strontium titanate submicron particles (BST@mSiO2 SMPs). This alleviates the organic-inorganic interface mismatch and forms a coherent BST-mSiO2-PVDF transition structure. This architecture not only strengthens interfacial adhesion but also facilitates the crystallization of the electroactive β phase. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy reveals that at a BST@mSiO2 loading of 0.4 wt%, the composite attains a total β- and γ-phase content of 79%, with the pure β phase contributing 69%. When an external voltage is applied, the composite film exhibits self-excited vibration with a maximum displacement amplitude of 110 μm. These results demonstrate that interfacial transition-layer engineering is an effective approach for developing high-performance PVDF-based piezoelectric composites for flexible electronic devices and smart systems.

The development of composite solid electrolytes with high ionic conductivity and superior interfacial stability is crucial for practical all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs). Herein, a high-performance bilayer composite separator is designed by integrating Li0.33La0.557TiO3 (LLTO) nanofibers into a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix, which is coated onto a polyethylene (PE) substrate. The interconnected LLTO nanofibers construct three-dimensional continuous ion-conducting pathways and reduce the crystallinity of the polymer matrix, endowing the optimized separator (with 60 wt % LLTO) with a high ionic conductivity of 5.17 × 10–4 S cm–1, a large lithium-ion transference number (tLi+= 0.81), and a wide electrochemical stability window up to 4.87 V. The unique bilayer architecture, where the LLTO/PVDF layer facilitates rapid Li+ transport and the PE layer ensures interfacial compatibility, enables stable lithium plating/stripping over 500 h and yields a high critical current density of 2.9 mA cm–2. Furthermore, the robust mechanical properties of the separator ensure uniform lithium-ion flux and effectively resist lithium dendrite penetration. When applied in NCM811/Li metal battery, this modified solid-state electrolyte separator enabled remarkable cycling stability (89.8% capacity retention after 200 cycles at 5C) and exceptional rate performance (115.4 mAh g–1 at 5C). This work provides a feasible and effective strategy for designing composite separators toward high-energy-density and dendrite-free ASSLMBs.

PVDF-based polymer electrolyte has been widely studied because of its good mechanical strength, easy processing, excellent thermal/chemical stability. However, pure PVDF has the problems of low ionic conductivity and insufficient interface stability with the electrodes. Herein, this research presents a facile strategy for fabricating Ce-MOF-derived rodlike nanocrystalline CeO2 to incorporate composite polymer electrolytes for Li-metal batteries. The CeO2-PVDF-HFP composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) could achieve enhanced ionic conductivity and interfacial stability.Notably, the ultrasmall nanocrystalline CeO2-PVDF-HFP CPEs demonstrates superior Li⁺ transport kinetics (5.04×10⁻⁴ S cm⁻¹), lithium dendrite suppression and an extended electrochemical stability window up to 4.6 V. When applied in Li| LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4 full batteries, the quasi-solid polymer electrolyte system could maintain a discharge capacity of 94 mAh g⁻¹ after 100 cycles at 0.5 C, deliver good cycling stability and rate capability retaining 99% capacity after prolonged 500 circles at 1 C. These advancements highlight special functional nanocrystalline fillers improve the performance of PVDF-based polymer electrolyte, offering a promising pathway for developing reliable solid-state lithium metal batteries.

Photocatalysis and piezocatalysis rely on light energy and mechanical energy (via the piezoelectric effect) as driving forces, respectively. Both have been successfully applied to pollutant degradation and wastewater treatment as advanced oxidation processes. However, in this study, BiFeO3 nanoparticles derived from MIL-101 were solidified in a flexible polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) porous structure, forming a dynamic synergistic effect between the piezoelectrically polarized electric field induced by mechanical agitation and the photogenerated carriers. Additionally, the hydrolytic inactivation of the material was inhibited by the chemical barrier effect of PVDF, while the charge separation at the heterojunction interface was directionally driven by the built-in electric field generated by the piezoelectric effect. The BiFeO3/PVDF composite membrane degraded 97.1% of RhB after 60 min of treatment under the synergistic effect of stirring and light. Free radical trapping and electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis confirmed that •O2– and •OH were the key active species (contributing over 60%). Piezoresponse Force Microscopy (PFM) test revealed the mechanism behind the enhancement of the built-in electric field, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with Fukui’s function elucidated that the N4, N5, and C6 sites in the RhB molecule were the preferred targets for free radical attack. Plant growth experiments verified the environmental safety of the system. The BiFeO3/PVDF porous composites with piezoelectric photocatalytic properties proposed in this study provide a promising solution for developing novel materials for efficient catalysis of organic pollutants in water.

The hydrophobic self-cleaning coatings had broad prospects in PV glass and precision instruments, but poor mechanical durability and environmental issues of fluorine-containing modifiers limited their practical use. This work developed an eco-friendly, good mechanical durability, hydrophobic self-cleaning coating. Nano-SiO2 was nonfluorinated and modified with OTES, combined with PVDF, and an OTES-SiO2/PVDF composite coating was prepared on glass via simple spraying. Results showed OTES grafted hydrophobic alkyl groups on SiO2, while PVDF enhanced coating mechanical strength by encapsulating SiO2. At OTES-SiO2 solution, PVDF volume ratio 3:7.5, the coating had optimal comprehensive performance, water contact angle (CA) up to 115.9°, pencil hardness 6H, and visible light transmittance 75%. Characterization confirmed a good self-cleaning effect, while the coating obviously reduced visible light transmittance and initial photovoltaic conversion efficiency but did not impair the core power generation performance and could significantly recover efficiency after self-cleaning. This work reveals the intrinsic mechanism of “covalent grafting-interface entanglement-micronano structure” for fluorine-free coating performance enhancement and provides a low-cost, scalable solution tailored to the extreme arid-sandy environment of northwest China. Its superior dust resistance and moderate UV stability effectively lower the maintenance demand of PV modules, showing more practical value than general-purpose hydrophobic coatings in long-term outdoor dusty environments.

The charged poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes were prepared by composite thermally induced phase separation (C-TIPS) method with perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) as additive. The results verify that the porosity, surface hydrophilicity and pure water permeation flux ( J W ) increase with the addition of PFSA for the membranes. The highest J W of 507.2 ± 1.2 L/(M 2 H bar) is obtained for the membrane cast at 90 °C. Much higher casting temperature isn’t advantageous to improve J W value for the PVDF membranes. All membranes exhibit negative apparent zeta potential ( ζ app ). The crystallinity in β phase increases as casting temperature increases for all PVDF membranes.
