The application of sorbent in solving the water pollution induced by heavy metals or metalloids is severely hindered by poor sorption performance and high cost, especially in simultaneous removal. Design and synthesis of nanocomposites as effective sorbents has been widely considered as a promising approach to address this problem. Herein, graphene oxide supported organo-montmorillonite composite (GO-OM) was prepared through a facile ultrasonic-assisted method for the first time and exhibited excellent synergetic adsorption behavior for mixed pollutants in aqueous solutions. Unlike previous studies, the simultaneous removal process can be well-described by the Freundlich and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The sorption capacities of GO-OM are very high for both metal cations and oxyanionic groups, showing excellent potential in the removal of multiple contaminants. Our study also reveals that GO-OM has high recycling efficiency and good performance under a low level concentration. All results suggest that GO-OM can be used as effective and ecofriendly sorbents for the removal of combined pollutants in an aqueous environment. This work contributes to developing high-performance graphene materials with organic minerals and gives deep insight into simultaneous sorption of metal ions, which can be potentially extended to other multiple pollutants.

In this study, a novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor for highly sensitive and selective detection of Pb(II) was developed based on Ru(bpy) 3 2+ encapsulated UiO66 metal-organic-framework (Ru(bpy) 3 2+ −UiO66 MOF) and −NH 2 group functionalized silica (NH 2 −SiO 2 ). The NH 2 −SiO 2 with large surface area provided an excellent platform for the ECL sensor. As numerous exposed carboxyl groups were present on UiO66 backbone, the Ru(bpy) 3 2+ −UiO66 could be steadily immobilized to NH 2 −SiO 2 by forming amide bonds. Meanwhile, the introduced UiO66 MOF which used for the encapsulation of Ru(bpy) 3 2+ , significantly enhanced the ECL efficiency of the proposed sensor, as it possessed a large specific surface area and porosity for the loading of Ru(bpy) 3 2+ . Moreover, a high quenching effect on ECL intensity was obtained in the presence of Pb(II) in the electrolyte. Under the optimal conditions, the quenched ECL intensity showed a good linear relationship within Pb(II) concentration in the range from 1.0×10 −6 to 1.0×10 2 μM, with a detection limit of 1.0×10 −7 μM ( S / N =3). The proposed sensor for Pb(II) detection was simple in operation, rapid in testing, stable in signal, and showed a good anti-interference ability to some other metal ions. Besides, its application for detecting Pb(II) in a real sample was also investigated here. This work provides a potential platform for metal ions detection in environmental monitoring field.

Various carbon nanomaterials for use in anodic stripping voltammetric analysis of Hg(II), Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cd(II) are screened. Graphene, carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers and fullerene (C 60 ), dispersed in chitosan (Chit) aqueous solution, are used to modify a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The fullerene-chitosan modified GCE (C 60 -Chit/GCE) displays superior performance in terms of simultaneous determination of the above ions. The electrodes and materials are characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The excellent performance of C 60 -Chit/GCE is attributed to the good electrical conductivity, large surface area, strong adsorption affinity and unique crystalline structure of C 60 . Using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry, the assay has the following features for Hg(II), Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cd(II), respectively: (a) Peak voltages of +0.14, −0.11, −0.58 and − 0.82 V (vs SCE); (b) linear ranges extending from 0.01–6.0 μM, 0.05–6.0 μM, 0.005–6.0 μM and 0.5–9.0 μM; and (c), detection limits (3σ method) of 3 nM (0.6 ppb), 14 nM (0.9 ppb), 1 nM (0.2 ppb) and 21 nM (2.4 ppb). Moreover, the modified GCE is well reproducible and suitable for long-term usage. The method was successfully applied to the simultaneous determination of these ions in spiked foodstuff.
Compared with graphene, carbon nanotubes and carbon nanofibers, an electrode modified with fullerene in chitosan electrode displays superior performance for the simultaneous anodic stripping voltammetric detection of Hg(II), Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cd(II).

Heavy metal ions in water, cosmetics, and arable land have become a world-wide issue as they cause a variety of diseases and even death to humans and animals when a certain level is exceeded. Therefore, it is necessary to development a new kind of sensor material for the determination of heavy metal ions. In this paper, we present an electrochemical sensor based on composite material (thiol(–SH) grafted poly(3,4-proplenedioxythiophene) (PProDOT(MeSH)2)/ porous silicon spheres (Si) composite, denoted as PProDOT(MeSH)2@Si) from the incorporation of thiol(–SH) grafted poly(3,4-proplenedioxythiophene) (PProDOT(MeSH)2) with porous silicon spheres (Si) for the electrochemical detection of heavy metal ions (Cd(II), Pb(II), and Hg(II)). The PProDOT(MeSH)2@Si composite was synthesized via a chemical oxidative polymerization method. The structure and morphology of PProDOT(MeSH)2@Si composite were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), and Brunauer−Emmett−Teller (BET). Furthermore, the electrochemical performance of PProDOT(MeSH)2@Si was evaluated by detecting of Cd(II), Pb(II), and Hg(II) ions using the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) method. The relationship between structural properties and the electrochemical performance was systematically studied. The results showed that the entry of two thiol-based chains to the monomer unit resulted in an increase in electrochemical sensitivity in PProDOT(MeSH)2,which was related to the interaction between thiol group(-SH) and heavy metal ions. And, the combination of PProDOT(MeSH)2with Si could improve the electrocatalytic efficiency of the electrode material. The PProDOT(MeSH)2@Si/GCE exhibited high selectivity and sensitivity in the rage of 0.04 to 2.8, 0.024 to 2.8, and 0.16 to 3.2 μM with the detection limit of 0.00575, 0.0027, and 0.0017 µM toward Cd(II), Pb(II), and Hg(II), respectively. The interference studies demonstrated that the PProDOT(MeSH)2@Si/GCE possessed a low mutual interference and high selectivity for simultaneous detection of Cd(II), Pb(II), and Hg(II) ions. Keywords:thiol(–SH), poly(3,4-proplenedioxythiophene), porous silicon spheres;electrochemical sensor;heavy metal ions;simultaneous detection

Nanofiber membranes from the composite of cellulose acetate/polyvinylpyrrolidone were prepared using electrospinning technique. After treated with water and alcoholic KOH to remove partially polyvinylpyrrolidone and deacetylate the cellulose acetate, the membranes were further functionalized with thiol groups using thioglycolic acid. Related materials were characterized using infrared and thermogravimetric analysis. And the results showed that the membranes were success of functionalisation. Then the nanofiber membranes were used in the sorption-desorption process. The effects of pH, contacting time and adsorption capacity of nanofiber membranes were studied against Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions. And the maximum adsorption capacities of Pb (II), Cu (II), and Cd (II) ions were estimated at 30.96, 19.63, 34.70 mg g −1 . Our results suggested that the adsorption behaviour of metal ions could be described using Langmuir model. Their adsorption kinetics was in agreement with the model of pseudo-second order, suggesting chemical adsorption as the rate-limiting step of the adsorption mechanism. The durability of the thiol-functionalized cellulose nanofiber membranes was also evaluated by repetitive adsorption-desorption.

In this study, branched polyethylenimine (PEI) enhanced magnetic carboxymethyl chitosan (MCMC-PEI) was synthesized and applied as adsorbent for the rapid removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solution. The successful synthesis of the adsorbent was proved by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). Simultaneously, the effect of the parameters such as initial concentration, adsorbent mass and pH of the solution on the removal of Pb(II) was studied by using response surface methodology (RSM). And central composite design (CCD), which is a widely used form of RSM, was employed in the experimental design procedure. The adsorption results revealed that the adsorption process could reach equilibrium rapidly within 10 min. Furthermore, the adsorption kinetic data could be well described by pseudo-second order model. The maximum adsorption capacity was 124.0 mg/g according to the Langmuir-Freundlich model, which fitted the adsorption isotherm of Pb(II) better than Langmuir model and Freundlich model, respectively. Thermodynamic studies (Δ G < 0, Δ H < 0, Δ S > 0) implied a spontaneous and exothermic process in nature. Meanwhile, the fabricated adsorbent exhibited excellent reusability. Therefore, the excellent adsorption property of MCMC-PEI made it a promising application in water treatment.

The acidic environment has been confirmed to have significant influence on the biochar products through hydrothermal carbonization . To investigate the effect of H 3 PO 4 on the surface properties and adsorption mechanisms of the biochar, fresh banana peels were used as feedstock and transformed into hydrochars under the catalysis of H 3 PO 4 with concentration ranges from 0% to 50%wt. The addition of H 3 PO 4 greatly impacted the physicochemical properties of the as-obtained hydrochars, such as carbonization degrees, pH values, amount of surface acidic functional groups and then further affected the adsorption mechanisms of lead ions on those hydrochars. Hydrochars catalyzed by H 3 PO 4 with higher concentration showed higher degree of carbonization, lower value of pH and fewer amount of acidic functional groups, while lower content of H 3 PO 4 could not completely catalyze the degradation reactions and resulted in larger quantity of intermolecular locked oxygen containing groups that could not be participated into the adsorption process . Among all six samples, hydrochar generated in 30%wt H 3 PO 4 exhibited the best adsorption property of 241 mg g −1 , possibly due to the largest concentration of the acidic functional groups on the surface rather than in the intermolecular structure of the carbon. It had been confirmed that the adsorption mechanisms were the combination of surface complexation, cationic exchange and part of precipitation. Hydrochars derived from fresh banana peel via hydrothermal carbonization catalyzed by phosphoric acid could be excellent adsorbents for lead removal in aqueous environments .

Pb(II) is a prevalent heavy metal ion classified as a 2B carcinogen. Excessive intake of Pb(II) in the human body can damage the central nervous system, kidneys, liver, and immune system, leading to permanent brain damage, anemia, and cancer. Colorimetry can be applied to rapidly determine Pb(II) residues, but there are still many challenges in the accuracy and sensitivity of detection. Based on the inhibitory impact of Pb(II) on the oxidase-like activity of octahedral silver oxide (Ag 2 O), a colorimetric sensor with smartphone-assisted analysis for the Pb(II) detection was first developed. Herein, it has been found that Pb(II) can adsorb onto the surface of octahedral Ag 2 O, hindering the production of O 2 − in the reaction system. This ultimately results in the suppression of oxidase-like activity, leading to a lighter purple appearance of the colorimetric reaction solution. The sensor exhibits a high degree of sensitivity and a limit of detection (LOD) for Pb(II) was calculated as 2.2 μg L −1 . Hence, the developed colorimetric sensor with high sensitivity, excellent specificity, and high tolerance to sodium ions is hopeful to have practical applications in Pb(II) detection in environmental water samples. Moreover, the sensor will provide a novel strategy for heavy metal ion detection and other substances.

In order to deal with the long-standing contradiction between safety and performance for propellent combustion catalyst, the TKX-50-M (M=Pb, Bi and Cu) were designed, synthesized and characterized. The density, thermal decomposition, mechanical sensitivity and energy performance of the prepared TKX-50-M were studied systemically. By taking NTO-Pb as the benchmark, the TKX-50-M exhibited much better energetic and safety properties. Besides, the combination of TKX-50-Pb, TKX-50-Cu and carbon black is conductive to the combustion of HMX-CMDB propellant. The burning rate of HMX-CMDB propellant increases from 16.80 to 21.28 mm s −1 at 20 MPa, and the pressure index reduces from 0.87 to 0.39 in the pressure range of 10–20 MPa. The catalytic mechanism of TKX-50-M were explored according to the results of combustion wave structure, flame image and characteristics of burning out surface. The catalytic effect of TKX-50-Pb is mainly reflected in the gas phase region, and the introduction of TKX-50-Cu and carbon black shows a significant synergistic catalytic effect. The results of this study not only help to explore insensitive high-energy combustion catalyst, but also helps to improve the combustion, energy and safety performance of CMDB propellants.

A novel method is introduced for extracting and enriching Cd(II) and Pb(II) from edible oils using glutathione disulfide (GSSG) as both an extractant and a phase-separation agent. The ions in the oils were initially extracted into an aqueous solution containing GSSG. After mixing the solution with acetonitrile at the appropriate volume ratio, a new phase formed, resulting in enrichment of the analytes. The experimental conditions were optimized using response surface methodology with a central composite design. Under optimal conditions, the method offered a combined enrichment factor of >660, with combined extraction efficiencies of 84.31% and 83.35% for Cd(II) and Pb(II), respectively. Finally, the method was conjugated to capillary electrophoresis to determine Cd(II) and Pb(II) in edible oil samples, with detection limits of 0.45 and 1.24 ppb, respectively. In comparison to traditional approaches, the GSSG-based method demonstrates rapidity, efficiency, and recyclability in extracting heavy metal ions from complex matrices.

This study quantified the complex stability constants of sulfamethazine (SMT) with cadmium (Cd 2+ ) and lead (Pb 2+ ) under different pH conditions. The UV-Vis spectrophotometer was used for acquiring the complexation data. Results showed that the complex stability constants of SMT with cadmium (Cd 2+ ) and lead (Pb 2+ ) increased as a function of the solution pH. In the investigated pH range, Cd 2+ showed stronger complex affinity with SMT than Pb 2+ . It appeared that cation - π interactions might dominate the complex between SMT with Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ at acid environment, and the covalent bonding might play a major role at neutral environment. Batch adsorption equilibrium experiment showed that the sorption capacity of Cd 2+ on goethite increased from 3.83 to 7.64 mg/g along with the addition of 1 mg/L SMT, indicating SMT can impede the transportation of Cd. In general, this study worked out the complexation constants and clarified the complexation mechanism between SMT with lead and cadmium, while sorption experiment indicated that sorption of Cd onto goethite was enhanced with SMT.

A new multifunctional β-cyclodextrin-sodium xanthogenate (β-CDX) was successfully synthesized by a one-step process and applied to remove Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. The characteristics and chelation mechanisms of β-CDX were investigated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the influences of various operating parameters such as pH (lime dosage), the order of the additions, β-CDX dosage, and the initial concentration of Pb(II) on the removal capacity of β-CDX and the characteristics of the products were systematically evaluated. The results demonstrated that the optimal removal effect for Pb(II) was achieved when β-CDX was used rather than using lime alone. In addition, it was more effective to add β-CDX to the working solutions prior to adding the lime than adding β-CDX after the lime. The use of 0.05 g/L of β-CDX was effective for the removal of Pb(II) according to the residual concentration when the initial concentration was 100 mg/L at different pH values. The maximum removal rate of the Pb(II) ions was 98% for all initial concentrations and the products were larger (size = 137.9 μm) and looser ( D f = 1.73) at an optimum pH range from 9 to 12. The characterization results confirmed that the RC(S)SNa in the β-CDX was the main contributor to the chelation of the Pb(II). These properties of β-CDX make it a promising compound for the treatment of wastewater contaminated by hazardous metal ions.
