Exploring efficient photocatalysts for degrading hazardous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is gaining increasing popularity. Herein, we developed Co-doped WO 3 nanofibrous photocatalysts by incorporating Co dopant into the WO 3 lattice, where hexavalent W(VI) is replaced with divalent Co(II). This heterovalent substitution causes significant charge rearrangement around the Co dopant, resulting in a localized electric field (LEF) that enhances oxygen adsorption and activation. Such an electric field drives photoexcited electrons to gather at the Co dopant, thereby achieving spatial charge separation. Both the efficient oxygen activation and LEF forming contribute to the production of superoxide radicals. The Co0.8-WO 3 nanofibers demonstrated improved photocatalytic oxidation of gaseous HCHO and CH 3 COCH 3 compared to WO 3 . This study highlights the significant promotion of dopant-induced oxygen adsorption and LEF-induced efficient carrier separation. These findings offer a new direction for developing more efficient photocatalysts using unique doping approaches.

Efficient photocatalytic abatement of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) critically relies on effective separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Constructing S-scheme heterojunctions is an effective strategy to promote charge separation while preserving strong redox potentials. Herein, WO 3 /MIL-100(Fe) composites featuring interfacial Fe-O-W bonds were synthesized via a one-pot hydrothermal method for photocatalytic degradation of gaseous toluene. The optimized 15%WO 3 /MIL-100(Fe) heterojunction exhibits a 1.3-fold enhancement in toluene removal efficiency (52.6%) and twice the CO 2 conversion rate relative to pristine MIL-100(Fe), along with enhanced degradation for o-xylene and styrene, demonstrating broad-spectrum applicability. The interfacial internal electric field (IEF) in WO 3 /MIL-100(Fe) promotes efficient charge carrier separation and accelerates electron transfer. The S‑scheme heterojunction directs the reductive electrons in the MIL-100(Fe) conduction band and oxidative holes in the WO 3 valence band to generate superoxide radicals (•O 2 ⁻) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH), respectively, enabling efficient ring opening and deep degradation. Moreover, the load of WO 3 enhances Lewis acidity and introduces additional adsorption sites, strengthening the interaction with toluene. This work highlights the rational design of MOF-based S-scheme heterojunctions for durable volatile organic compound abatement.

The highly efficient enrichment of Li+ and Cs+ from their low-concentration aqueous solutions is a crucial step for Lithium and Cesium clean production, as well as radioactive Cs+ safety remediation from water. The current adsorption and precipitation routes are high energy cost and environmental unfriendly. Electrochemical ion exchange route may serve as a promising alternative route. This study presents results of high efficient, multicycle Li+ and Cs+ enrichment from their low concentration solutions via intercalation and deintercalation in WO3/GaAs composite electrode with Faraday efficiency above 99% and high intercalation capacities 7.25 mg/g for Li+ and 38.89 mg/g for Cs+, respectively. After six cycles, 95 and 90% capacities for Li+ and Cs+ still remained. Both enrichment efficiency and stability are higher than those of LiFePO4 (LFP) and LiMn2O4 (LMO) under the same conditions. This route might provide a way for low-energy cost and highly efficient Li+ and Cs+ recovery from contaminated water.

Electrolyte leakage from lithium-ion batteries constitutes a critical safety challenge as volatile and highly flammable organic carbonates can rapidly trigger fire and catastrophic thermal runaway. Diethyl carbonate (DEC), a widely used electrolyte solvent, is particularly hazardous, yet its selective detection under humid and chemically complex conditions remains highly challenging. Herein, an unconventional synthesis strategy is reported that departs fundamentally from traditional metal-ion precursors, employing a polyoxometalate molecular cluster (H4SiW12O40·xH2O, SiW12) as a structure-directing, molecular-level precursor to construct dendritic WO3 nanofibers uniformly decorated with Au nanoparticles (Au-D-WO3) for ultratrace DEC sensing. The POM-guided process directs the in situ formation of defect-rich, hierarchically porous WO3 dendrites, while the concurrent reduction of HAuCl4 generates ultrafine Au NPs anchored on WO3, creating abundant oxygen vacancies and well-defined Au/WO3 Schottky interfaces. Benefiting from synergistic structural hierarchy and interfacial electronic modulation, the sensor exhibits ultratrace sensitivity and high selectivity toward DEC, robust humidity tolerance, and long-term stability. Density functional theory calculations reveal a transition from electrostatic- to hybridization-dominated adsorption at the Au/WO3 interface, accounting for the enhanced and humidity-resilient sensing performance.

Cu-WO 3 efficiently removed extracellular plasmid pBR322 under visible light. • Representative DNA structural units were further oxidized by Cu-WO 3 . • Cu-WO 3 reduced pBR322 transformation frequency by 96.9% within 20 min. • Cu modification promoted charge separation and reactive species generation. • h + - and ·O 2 − -associated pathways showed the strongest involvement in DNA oxidation. The spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) through horizontal gene transfer (HGT) poses an important environmental and public health concern. In this study, Ag-, La-, and Cu-modified WO 3 were compared for photocatalytic removal of the model extracellular ARG-carrying plasmid pBR322 , and the residual transformation potential after treatment was further evaluated. Cu-WO 3 showed the highest photocatalytic activity among the tested materials. 97.4% of plasmid pBR322 was removed in 20 min under visible light, with a rate constant 66.7% higher than that of pristine WO 3 . Four representative deoxyribonucleosides were almost completely degraded within 40 min, demonstrating the oxidative susceptibility of DNA structural units. The transformation frequency of pBR322 decreased by 96.9% after 20 min, indicating a substantial reduction in residual transformation potential. Cu modification enhanced photogenerated charge separation, interfacial charge transfer, and reactive-species generation, with pathways associated with h + and ·O 2 − showing the strongest apparent involvement in DNA oxidation. Cu-WO 3 also progressively disrupted plasmid structure and partially mineralized nitrogen-containing components. These results indicate the potential of Cu-modified WO 3 for photocatalytic control of extracellular ARG-carrying DNA and mitigation of transformation-mediated HGT potential.

Photocatalytic water splitting is hindered by flammable H 2 /O 2 cogeneration and energy-intensive post-separation. Herein, a Ru/WO 3 -MWCNTs ternary composite is designed to address these bottlenecks via a hydrogen spillover-based strategy: direct H* storage instead of gaseous H 2 generation to achieve H 2 /O 2 separation. Photogenerated H* from Ru active sites migrate through WO 3 , then is immobilized on MWCNTs as C H bonds for hydrogen storage, enabling exclusive O 2 release during photocatalysis. This composite exhibits an oxygen evolution rate (OER) of 645.28 μmol g −1 h −1 (outperforming binary counterparts) with no detectable gaseous H₂ during irradiation, alongside a stable H₂ storage capacity of 2.23 wt%. The stored hydrogen is thermally releasable, and the entire cycle of photocatalytic water splitting (hydrogen storage with O 2 evolution) and thermal H 2 release maintains excellent cyclic stability. This work establishes hydrogen storage-aided in-situ H 2 /O 2 separation as a universal strategy for addressing the core bottlenecks in photocatalytic water splitting.

Gas insulated switchgear (GIS) optimizes the integration of all primary equipment in a substation, except for the transformer, and is widely used in power systems due to its strong insulation and high reliability. Once a fault occurs in GIS, it poses a significant threat to grid safety, necessitating the establishment of an effective early insulation condition assessment mechanism to prevent further deterioration of the fault. CO, HF, and SO 2 are key characteristic gases reflecting GIS faults, and there is an urgent need for detection technologies that can monitor equipment status in real-time, accurately, and provide timely warnings. This study proposes the use of a differentiated sensor array combined with recognition algorithms to achieve precise detection of GIS fault gases. The WO 3 modified with different amounts of Pt shows good gas-sensing performance for CO, HF, and SO 2 , with distinct responses. Based on an optimized four-sensor array and feature extraction algorithms, high-precision qualitative classification (98.04%) of CO, HF, SO 2 , and their mixed gases was achieved, with high R 2 values in concentration prediction (0.9213 for CO, 0.9082 for HF, and 0.8947 for SO 2 ). Furthermore, an in-depth study of the differentiation mechanism of the sensor array was conducted. Finally, the developed IoT electronic nose system successfully demonstrated the precise detection of GIS fault gases. This research not only proposes a new solution for GIS fault detection but also provides a “boost” for the development of electronic noses.

A WO 3 sensor was prepared using discarded cotton towels to achieve a high response to NO at reasonably low temperatures, which not only turns cotton towels into treasures but also makes the preparation process green and environmentally friendly, which is very much in line with the concept of sustainable development of the society. We successfully replicated the microtubule morphology of discarded cotton towels by washing them with ultrapure water, cutting them into small squares, impregnating them with an ethanol solution of tungsten hexachloride (WCl 6 ) for 6 h, drying them, and then calcining them for 2 h under air atmosphere. Among them, the WO 3 -CT-6 microtubules obtained by calcination at 600 °C are micron tube structures supported by nanoparticles, and the single tubes are uniformly distributed and morphologically intact, with a large specific surface area, a high content of adsorbed oxygen species, and oxygen vacancy defects, which together achieve the ability to exhibit a good sensitivity to trace NO. At a low temperature of 50 °C, the WO 3 -CT-6 microtubular sensor has a response of 74.5 to 1 ppm NO and a fast response/recovery time (93 s /27 s), which is the best overall sensitivity performance of WO 3 -based sensors available. The WO 3 -CT-6 sensor also has good selectivity, reproducibility, long-term stability, and humidity resistance. In addition, we performed a detailed analysis of the sensitivity mechanism using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), oxygen temperature-programmed desorption and nitrogen-air sensitivity tests. Waste-wood derived biochar was one of potential cocatalysts for catalyst construction, while relevant reports were scarce due to its irregularity, impeded connection properties, etc. necessitating further exploration. In this work, a waste wood-derived tungsten trioxide (WO 3 )/zinc indium sulfide (ZnIn 2 S 4 , ZIS)/biochar (BC) ternary heterojunction was fabricated for interfacial photocatalytic hydrogen (H 2 ) evolution via a two-step hydrothermal method. Under visible light irradiation, the WO 3 /ZIS/BC achieved a H 2 evolution rate of 4.82 mmol/g/h, which was 9.4 and 2.2 times higher than that of pure ZnIn 2 S 4 and ZIS/WO 3 material. Based on DFT calculations and ESR analyses, the electrons in composite were transferred from WO 3 to ZIS and from BC to ZIS, confirming the function of a dual Z -scheme system. Herein, the biochar was acted as both a structural supporter and an electron reservoir, enhancing light absorption, expanding charge-transfer regions, and improving stability of the ternary composite. This work provides a robust theoretical foundation and technique support for enhancing wood waste recyclability and advancing renewable energy transition from biomass to green hydrogen.

Electrochromic glass, one of the green energy-saving building materials, get more and more attention. The advancement of efficient ion storage film become a hot topic of research. The porous V 2 O 5 ion-storage film was prepared by sol-gel method using polyethylene glycol (PEG) as the pore-former. The peak current of porous V 2 O 5 films heated at 300 °C increased substantially due to the volatility temperature of PEG at 285 °C. The mutual effects of the PEG content, heat treatment temperature, and heat treatment time on the structure and electrochromic properties of porous V 2 O 5 film were investigated by the response surface method (RSM). The results show that the influence extent on ion storage is: heat treatment temperature > PEG content > heat treatment time. Under optimized process parameters of PEG content 6.2 g/100 mL sol, heat treatment time 4 h, heat treatment temperature 310 °C, the porous V 2 O 5 film exhibited excellent ion storage capacity (87.28 mC·cm −2 ). The electrochromic device (ECD) with optimized porous V 2 O 5 ion-storage film as the counter electrode of electrochromic WO 3 film has been successfully assembled, which shows fascinating performance with high optical contrast (87.8% at 550 nm) and fast response time (bleaching/coloring: 4.5/3.7 s). The promoting effect of Ce on V-W/Ti catalyst for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO x by NH 3 was studied. Compared with the original V-W/Ti samples, addition of Ce contributed better NH 3 -SCR performance. The H 2 O and SO 2 resistance of Ce modified V-W/Ti catalyst was improved by the different impregnation sequence of Ce. The catalysts were characterized by NH 3 -temperature programmed desorption (NH 3 -TPD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and H 2 -temperature programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR) techniques. The results showed that the impregnation sequence of W and Ce influenced the NH 3 adsorption capacity of the catalysts. In comparison to 0.2V-5Ce-5W/Ti and 0.2V-(5Ce5W)/Ti, 0.2V-5W-5Ce/Ti catalyst contributed better H 2 O and SO 2 resistance, with the highest Ce 3+ /(Ce 4+ + Ce 3+ ) value of 36.6%. Besides, a catalytic mechanism of SCR reactions over Ce-doped V-W/Ti catalysts was proposed. Graphic

To address the large structural and volume changes of commercial WO 3 during charge/discharge, which make this material unsuitable for use in Li-ion batteries (LIBs), we herein prepared oxygen deficient WO 3- x nanosheets on a large scale by thermal treatment of ammonium paratungstate in a reducing atmosphere followed by sonication and freeze-drying. The above nanosheets were employed as LIB anode materials and exhibited a specific capacity and cycling stability significantly exceeding those of oxygen-deficient WO 3- x nanoparticles and commercial WO 3 . In addition, we investigated the effect of nanosheet loading on electrode performance, demonstrating that the best results (Li storage capacity of ∼628 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 100 mA g −1 ) were obtained at a nanosheet content of 20 wt%. This excellent performance was ascribe to the good exposure of defects caused by the comparatively small size of WO 3- x nanosheets , which resulted in an increased number of sites and diffusion paths available for Li-ion storage and transfer. The novel electrode-optimized strategy may be extended to the fabrication of other electrodes that use nanomaterials as active substances due to its superior comprehensive performance and low cost.
