Deeply understanding the structure and electrical properties of ZIF-8 is very important due to many practical applications of porous materials . We present the crystal structure and microstructure details of ZIF-8 prepared in three different solvents. The solvents play an important role on grain growth of ZIF-8, furthermore, a small fraction of monoclinic phase can be found in the ZIF-8s prepared in water or in amonium hydroxide. Radio-frequency dielectric and impedance spectra studies of dynamic dielectric response of ZIF-8s indicate two additional dielectric relaxation processes associated with the introduced water molecules in as-prepared samples. The dielectric response can be described by the combination of the dc conductivity, the universal dielectric response, the Cole-Cole relation and intrinsic response. The results exhibit the solvents make an important influence on the electrical properties due to different contents water in ZIF-8s. Our results will pave a way to modify the dielectric property of ZIF-based dielectrics in radio-frequency applications.

Membrane-based separation technology has evolved as a competitive approach for CO 2 capture from flue gas (mainly N 2 ). To achieve high separation performance, three partially NH 2 -, OH- and CH 3 OH- functionalized mixed-linker-ZIF-7 were successfully synthesized, and incorporated into polyether-block-amide (Pebax® 2533) polymer to form mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs). As evidenced by the CO 2 adsorption isotherms , introducing functional groups in the ZIF-7 framework was indeed beneficial for CO 2 adsorption. All MMMs composed of ZIF-7-NH 2 , ZIF-7-OH and ZIF-7-CH 3 OH offered better CO 2 /N 2 separation performance than the parent ZIF-7-Pebax® 2533 membrane, suggesting the positive effect of functionalized ZIF-7 fillers on the gas separation performance. Among the three functionalized ZIF-7 based MMMs, the ZIF-7-OH-Pebax MMMs exhibited the best performance for CO 2 /N 2 separation, which might be ascribed to the highest adsorption selectivity of CO 2 over N 2 predicted by ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) for ZIF-7-OH fillers. The 14% ZIF-7-OH-Pebax MMM showed high CO 2 permeability of 273 Barrer and CO 2 /N 2 separation factor of 38, which increased by 60% and 145% as compared with the neat Pebax membrane. The strategy of preparing functionalized MOFs with strong affinity for CO 2 provides an effective method to develop MMMs for highly efficient CO 2 separation.

A zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) derivative was synthesized and developed as the corrosion inhibitor of copper in 0.5 mol/L NaCl solution, and its inhibition performance was investigated by electrochemical measurement and surface analysis . Results show that the ZIF-8 derivative could effectively inhibit copper from corrosion, and the inhibition efficiency was 87.2% at an optimal ZIF-8 derivative concentration of 45 mg/L. The corrosion inhibition mechanism of the ZIF-8 derivative could be explained as follows: the amino functional groups and the π-system formed by aromatic rings of the ZIF-8 derivative were tightly adsorbed on the copper substrates, which systematically formed a hydrophobic film, thereby effectively inhibiting the corrosion caused by aggressive ions.

A Type I porous liquid based on the mixed-linker zeolitic imidazolate framework, ZIF-8/90-PL, has been prepared by a one-step imine condensation reaction and characterized by X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, TGA and rheology analysis. This facile preparation strategy of a porous liquid has enormous industrial production and application potential, with over one kilogram of ZIF-8/90-PL being successfully prepared. ZIF-8/90-PL can be directly used as a liquid absorbent or be co-processed with alumina hollow fibers to form a composite membrane with improved selectivity in the context of CO2 separation from CH4 or N2. This simple synthesis method is expected to be extended to other metal–organic frameworks.

Metal-organic framework (MOF) films synergize molecular-scale porosity with conformal surface chemistry on polymer substrates. We report a spectrally selective coating in which a ZIF-8 film, seeded by a Zn(II)-polydopamine (Zn-PDA) interlayer on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), enables hyperpolarized 1 2 9 Xe MRI detection of the polymer surface, while conventional 1 H MRI delineates anatomy. The coating produces a film-bound 1 2 9 Xe resonance at 82.0 ppm in both water and fetal bovine serum. After 60 min, the resonance position remained unchanged, with signal-to-noise ratios decreasing by only 14.9% and 17.2%, respectively. Selective excitation yields coating-specific positive contrast on the 1 2 9 Xe channel; correspondingly, 1 H MRI reveals a distinct surface appearance likely due to altered local proton density and magnetic susceptibility. In phantoms, 1 2 9 Xe and 1 H images were co-registered with a center-point offset of 0.34 mm; in a flow simulator, the offset was 0.26 mm. A rat airway experiment confirmed in vivo spectral selectivity with a film-bound resonance near 92 ppm, co-localizing with 1 2 9 Xe ventilation and 1 H anatomical references. While demonstrated here using coated PTFE segments and direct xenon bubbling, these results provide a robust proof of concept for MOF-coated polymers as spectrally selective 1 2 9 Xe MRI labels, warranting future physiological translation.

Zeolitic imidazole framework-67 (ZIF-67) was demonstrated to exhibit intrinsic peroxidase-like activity by using 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) as a chromogenic substrate. However, due to the inherent defects in the chemical stability and thermal stability of ZIFs, the peroxidase-like activity of ZIF-67 was severely affected. Therefore, establishing a simple and effective method to enhance the stability of ZIF-67 is necessary. ATP was found to improve the catalytic activity of ZIF-67. On the one hand, compared with ZIF-67, the catalytic efficiency of ZIF-67/ATP increased by 796 %, 5010 % and 570 % at 25 °C, 30 °C and 40 °C, respectively. In addition, the catalytic activity of ZIF-67/ATP was also greatly enhanced at pH-4. On the other hand, compared with ATP, the catalytic rate of ZIF-67/ATP increased by 364 % after 10 min of incubation. Inspired by the high catalytic activity of ZIF-67/ATP, we used the ZIF-67/ATP peroxidase-like system for colorimetric detection of glutathione with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.46 μM. Furthermore, the proposed method provides a perspective on stabilizing the structures of ZIFs and developing a simple and efficient detection method.

Porous carbon materials derived from ZIF-8 have attracted extensive research attention on account of their large surface area, tunable mesoporosity and abundant nitrogen content. However, directly carbonized ZIF-8 usually suffers from a low electronic conductivity, poor wettability and relatively low mesoporosity, which severely restricts their capacitive performance. Herein, P-doped modified carbon materials derived from ZIF-8 (ZPCs) were synthesized by using nontoxic phytic acid as a phosphorus source, followed by carbonization at high temperature. Benefiting from its relatively high specific surface area of 911.7 m2g−1and higher ratio of mesopores, as well as N, O and P doping, ZPC-1000 delivers the largest specific capacity, up to 219.4 F g−1at 1 A g−1, among the prepared samples and an outstanding cycle span, retaining 100% capacity after 2000 cycles at 5 A g−1. In this work, we highlight the strategy of constructing a synergistic effect between high mesoporosity and heteroatom doping, which can greatly boost the capacitive performance of carbon materials. Keywords:P doping;ZIF-8;porous carbon;capacitive performance

Nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds (NHCs) are hazardous, toxic, and persistent pollutants, thereby requiring urgent solutions. Herein, ZIF-67 was compounded with powder-activated carbon (PAC) to prepare Co/NC/PAC (NC i.e. nitrogen-doped carbon) particle electrodes for the electrocatalytic treatment of pyridine and diazines . Co/NC/PAC reflected the confinement of Co 3 O 4 /CoN/Co 0 into the N-doped graphitic-carbon layer to generate both pyrrolic-N and graphitic-N active sites. Under the optimal conditions (0.3 A, 12 mL min −1 , and initial pH 7.00), the degradation of four NHCs realized 90.2–93.7% efficiencies. The number and position of N atoms in NHCs directly affected the degradation efficiency. The following increasing order of facilitated degradation was recorded: pyridazine < pyrimidine < pyrazine < pyridine. The as-obtained Co/NC/PAC possessed the direct redox effect on NHCs, achieving fast electrocatalytic rate. Species like ·OH and H* were detected in Co/NC/PAC system with contributions to NHCs degradation estimated to 24% and 34%, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed H* susceptible to attacking the N position, while the meta-position of C was subject to hydroxyl radical (·OH) addition. Overall, degradation of NHCs was achieved by hydro-reduction, oxidation , ring opening cleavage, hydroxylation, and mineralization. Ring-cleavage and mineralization of NHCs provided a novel electrochemical strategy to refractory wastewater treatment .

In this study, ZIF-8 nanoparticles were synthesized using a simple method at room temperature. The ZIF-8 nanoparticles were then characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) specific surface area, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and zeta potential . Subsequent batch adsorption experiments evaluated the adsorption performance of ZIF-8 on tetracycline , examining key pa-rameters like reaction time, pH, temperature, and adsorbent dosage. The results revealed a removal rate for TC of up to 90.59%. The adsorption data aligned with the Sips model, showcasing a maximum adsorption capacity of 359.61 mg/g at 303K. Further, the adsorption kinetics adhered to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model with an equilibrium adsorption capacity of 90 mg/g at 303K. The considerable specific surface area of ZIF-8, standing at 1674.169 m 2 /g, likely enhances the adsorption efficacy. Analysis using XRD and FTIR confirmed the adsorption of TC on the ma-terial's surface. Overall, the predominant driving forces behind the adsorption process were identified as electrostatic interactions and π-π stacking interactions.

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), which incorporate porous particles into polymer matrix, were a promising approach to overcome the inherent trade-off effect of polymeric membranes. Controllable and easily scalable membrane fabrication strategies remained a challenge for the development of defect-free pervaporation MMMs. In this work, to avoid defects formed by particle exposure in MMMs, forced surface segregation of ZIF-8 on a substrate was achieved by vapor-assisted non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process. Subsequently, ZIF-8 ‘islands’ on the substrate surface were sealed with PVA solution and defect-free dense MMMs were successfully prepared. The surface segregation of ZIF-8 was proved by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The prepared MMMs showed an increase in flux of 162% and an increase in separation factor of 299% compared to the pristine membranes. It was expected that this strategy of inducing particles to undergo forced surface segregation could be extended to the preparation of other membranes.

Multiple microenvironmental modulation of zeolite imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) is expected to solve the long-term intractable problem of low sensitivity in electrochemical sensing. Herein, the metal phthalocyanines with different central ions (PcM, M = Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) were introduced into ZIF-8 by in-situ synthesis method. Then, the hollow composite nanomaterials , HZIF-8/PcFe and HZIF-8@PcFe (HZIF-8, i.e ., hollow ZIF-8) with different TA (tannic acid) coating thicknesses (∼11 nm and ∼33 nm) were successfully fabricated by carefully designed polyphenol-mediated modulation (PMM) strategy. Next, the HZIF-8@PcFe electrochemical sensor was constructed for selective and sensitive analysis by selecting dopamine (DA) as the analyte. The TA coating (superhydrophilic state), PcFe (redox properties) and hollow MOF cavity (faster mass transfer) was used as the triple microenvironment modulation of ZIF-8 to enhance the electrocatalytic performance. Under the optimum conditions (pH = 8.0), the linear correlations of 0.3 to 200 μmol/L was obtained for the peak current response, with a detection limit of 0.1 μmol/L (S/N = 3, i.e ., Signal/Noise = 3). Meanwhile, the HZIF-8@PcFe electrochemical sensor exhibited excellent interference selectivity, reproducibility and stability, which enabled it to detect low abundance DA in real samples. And the F-test (homogeneity test of variance) and t -test (student's t test) statistical analyses were employed to enhance the accuracy of the actual samples' detection. This work will enlighten researchers working in the field of porous framework composites and open up new paths for the development of hollow MOFs hybrid materials in electrochemical sensing.

Colloidal formulations to treat cardiovascular conditions are urgently needed since diseases like atherosclerosis are a major societal burden and agonizing for affected individuals. Copper ions and zinc ions as well as correctly dosed nitric oxide (NO) have long been known to alleviate these pathologies. Herein, we present strategies for size-controlled crystallization of copper-doped Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework 8 (ZIF-8). The colloidal stability and structural integrity of copper-doped ZIF-8 was assessed in water and blood serum. Key findings of the present study include that structural integrity of colloidal copper doped ZIF-8 in blood serum is maintained over several days, while disintegration occurs more quickly in water. Further, we confirmed the known ability of copper-doped ZIF-8 micro-particles to convert blood borne s-nitrosothiols into nitric oxide for the presented colloidal formulations. Nitric Oxide conversion was more moderate and sustained in colloidal copper-doped ZIF-8 formulations compared to free copper ions in solution, which is crucial for many biomedical applications. Another key finding of the present study is that the onset of rapid structural disintegration of copper-doped ZIF-8 occurs at pH 5.5, which is a common physiological pH regime of atherosclerotic plaques. Colloidal particles are known to accumulate in atherosclerotic plaques and the presented system may be a valuable addition to the emerging field of nanomedicines for atherosclerosis treatment. The present study has evaluated the colloidal stability and structural integrity, establishing required material characteristics needed for biological evaluation of the material in future dedicated studies.
