Tetracycline (TC) residues have been noted as an important class of emerging contaminants in the environment, thus fast, straightforward, highly sensitive detection method is becoming an issue that must be addressed. Herein, a novel CDs@ZIF-8 sensing material was fabricated by encapsulating luminescent carbon dots (CDs) into the metal-organic framework (ZIF-8) to achieve highly luminescent porous composites. Furthermore, to avoid the secondary contamination caused by powders, a shapable CDs@ZIF-8/CS film sensor as a portable disposable test strip with dual-function of TC detection and adsorption was designed by crosslinking CDs@ZIF-8 with chitosan (CS). The as-prepared CDs@ZIF-8/CS hybrid film exhibited the high sensitivity and selectivity for TC fluorescence detection and rapid decontaminate capability, as well as high optical transmittance and robust mechanical property, which were essential for the practical sensing application. This paper-based dual-functional luminescent sensor exhibits promising practicability for TC detection and contaminant removal in pharmaceutical analysis, food safety and water treatment.

Selective ion separation from aqueous solution is challenging and crucial for water purification. In this work, zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) derived nano-porous carbon (NC-X-A) with confined sub-nanometer pores was synthesized by acid leaching and alkali activation after the carbonization of ZIF-8 precursor for the selective electrochemical separation of chloride ions (Cl − ). Here, the uptake capacity and selectivity of Cl − were improved by changing the carbonization temperature to tune the specific surface area and pore size. Based on the size confinement effect and the difference in free energies of dehydration, the obtained optimum carbon film, i.e., NC-1000-A coated electrode, exhibited separation factors of 1.384, 1.952 and 2.970 for Cl − /Br − , Cl − /F − and Cl − /SO 4 2− , respectively. It also showed fast uptake/release ability with an uptake equilibrium time less than 90 min. The Cl − uptake capacity reached to 64.06 mg g −1 and retained 99.7% of its initial value even after 1000 uptake/release cycles due to its porous structure with high specific surface area, good electrical conductivity and extra electric driving force during the ESIX process. Thus, it is expected that this kind of carbon film would be applied as a promising electroactive material for the selective separation of Cl − from wastewater.

Gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) are widely used in the fluorescence detection of biomolecules in human serum due to their good fluorescence properties, low toxicity, and better biocompatibility. However, the weak fluorescence intensity of AuNCs limits the fluorescence detection of molecules within a wide concentration range. It is reported that coating AuNCs in ZIF-8 with adjustable pore size can effectively improve the fluorescence intensity of AuNCs and broaden the detection range. And the AuNCs wrapped in the gaps of ZIF-8 can prevent the fluorescence quenching caused by the aggregation of AuNCs. However, ZIF-8 has high crystallinity, poor dispersion, and easy deposition, which reduces the fluorescence stability of the detection system and affects the detection. Based on the above research, the highly hydrophilic polymer PEI was modified to the surface of ZIF-8, and a kind of nanocomposite material AuNCs/ChOx@ZIF-8/PEI was obtained by co-encapsulating AuNCs prepared with glutathione as a ligand and cholesterol oxidase (ChOx) into ZIF-8 modified with PEI. The composite material emits strong red light at 650 nm under the excitation of 395-nm light, and the system can sensitively detect cholesterol (Chol) in human serum. Compared with other materials, the PEI-modified composite has better solubility and stability, so the detection effect of Chol is better. Encapsulation of ChOx in the ZIF-8 shell can protect the enzyme and increase the local concentration of ChOx, thereby speeding up the reaction rate. Compared with free AuNCs/ChOx, the quenching rate of AuNCs/ChOx@ZIF-8/PEI system is doubled. Secondly, the addition of Fe 2+ to the detection process results in higher quenching rate and detection sensitivity. The system can detect Chol in the concentration range 0.1–2.4 μM, with a detection limit of 0.073 μM. The determination is a fast and sensitive strategy. In addition, the practicability of this assay in the detection of Chol in human serum has been verified. Due to its selectivity and sensitivity, it has potential application value in clinical diagnosis. Graphical abstract

Knowledge of the fate and transport of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in porous media is essential to understanding their environmental impacts. However, to date, the transport mechanisms of MOFs are not fully revealed. Meanwhile, surfactants can promote MOFs dispersion by forming a stable suspension. They also allow MOFs to migrate in the aqueous environment, which would increase the risks of MOFs being exposed to human health and the ecological environment. In this study, the effect of surfactants type and nanoparticle (NP) concentrations (50, 100, and 200 mg/L) were investigated using a sand column to study the transportability of ZIF-8 NPs in saturated porous media. Surfactants used were categorized into three groups, including cationic surfactants (CTAB, DTAB), anionic surfactants (SDBS, SDS), and nonionic surfactants (Tween 80, Tween 20). Experimental results showed that the ionic surfactants significantly increased the transportability of ZIF-8 NPs. Furthermore, a low concentration of NPs tended to break through the column under ionic surfactant conditions, and the maximum effluent recovery of ZIF-8 NPs (50 mg/L) was 87.4% in the presence of SDS. Nevertheless, ZIF-8 NPs tended to deposit in the inlet of the sand column in the presence of nonionic surfactants due to hydrodynamic bridging and straining. This research provides a comprehensive understanding of the deposition mechanism of ZIF-8 NPs as affected by surfactant types and NP concentrations. Most importantly, the study highlights those ionic surfactants had a significant impact on the mobility of ZIF-8 NPs, which arouses attention to the ecological and human health risk assessment related to the manufacturing of MOFs with the aid of various dispersing agents.

Coating nanoparticles with metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can lead to core–shell hybrid particles with synergetic functionalities of the respective components. Previous efforts have been dedicated to achieving homogeneous and smooth MOF coatings with featureless morphologies. Herein, using halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) coated with polydopamine (PDA) to confine nucleation and growth of ZIF-8 on the surface, we prepared rod-like core–shell HNT@PDA@ZIF-8 particles. The ZIF-8 coating has a hierarchical morphology consisting of nanoaggregates of densely packed and fused ZIF-8 nanoparticles. This was achieved by simply controlling the concentration of the MOF precursors. These hybrid MOF particles combine the classical large microporosities with meso- and macroporosities derived from such hierarchical structures, while has enhanced mechanical stability. HNT@PDA@ZIF-8 exhibits appreciated adsorption capacity for several organic contaminants in aqueous system, especially for Rhodamine B.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) nanoparticles have been regarded as one of the most important materials for high-performance applications in various fields, including environmental protection. Understanding the migration behavior of MOFs in the environmental media is critical for evaluating their opportunities and risks. In this study, the effect of pH, ionic strength, and NOM (fulvic acid and citric acid) were selected to investigate the transport and retention of ZIF-8 in saturated porous media . Experimental results showed that the released Zn 2+ of ZIF-8 was significantly increased by the high concentration of ionic strength and citric acid . There were new ZIFs phases detected in the transport process. ZIF-8 had weak mobility with a recovery of transport mass ≈ 2.3% in 1 mg/L citric acid at pH 6, while the maximum effluent recovery was 33.7% in the 100 mM NaCl at pH 8. Under all examined conditions, ZIF-8 was mainly retained at segments near the column inlet. Straining increased the retention of ZIF-8 in porous media. These results indicated that physicochemical factors and particle-specific properties played important roles in influencing ZIF-8 transportability, which would lead to the more complex evaluation of the environmental behaviors of MOFs.

In this study, heterostructured MOF/lamellar talc composites was successfully synthesized by in-situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles on acidified black talc (ABT) and introduced into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix to prepare high-performance mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) via spin coating and thermal cross-linking. The submicron-size natural lamellar black talc (BT) was first explored as stable carrier to synthesize laminated composite with continuous MOF phase. Owing to its silica-oxygen tetrahedral structure, the resultant laminated composite presented good compatibility with PDMS matrix, avoiding the formation of interfacial defect between polymer and nanoparticles. Moreover, well-dispersed and continuous ZIF-8 nanoparticles on lamellar nanosheets had preferential adsorption effect for alcohol, enhancing the selectivity of membranes. The coupling effects of graphene-like lamellar structure from talc and sequential transport channels from ZIF-8 attributed to greatly enhance permeation flux. Various techniques such as FESEM, TEM, FTIR, XRD and EDS were applied to investigate the morphology and structure of composites and membranes, and pervaporation experiments were applied to probe the behavior of polymer-based composite membranes . High performance defect-free ZIF-8@ABT/PDMS MMMs exhibited excellent total permeate flux of 1711 g m −2 h −1 with very competitive separation factor of 41 for low concentration n-butanol recovery.

Polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers have become an ideal material for bone tissue engineering due to a series of advantages. Considering the clinical treatment of bone defects, in addition to meeting the golden standard, PCL based nanofibers also need to be multifunctional to anti-inflammatory, antibacterial properties, and enhance the bone regeneration and repair. Herein, we successfully developed the multifunctional PCL/LIG/ZIF-8 composite nanofibers by loading ZIF-8 on electrospun PCL/lignin (PCL/LIG) nanofibers. The prepared composite nanofibers exhibit fairly good wettability and acceptable degradation rate, as well as excellent antioxidative stress and antibacterial properties originating from the incorporated LIG and loaded ZIF-8. Moreover, owing to the synergistic effect of LIG and ZIF-8, the composite nanofibers present excellent osteogenic differentiation, which can be verified in biomineralization experiments and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. These results indicate that the PCL/LIG/ZIF-8 composite nanofibers, as potential healthcare candidate, have a promising applied in the treatment of bone defects.

Construction of macroscopic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with high processability is crucial for their practical usage. Here, we demonstrate a facile metal template-guided growth approach that exploits the synthesis of forest-like ZIF-8-based material. The 3D self-supported array architecture endows the resultant ZIF-8 forests with efficient exposure of active sites, rapid mass transfer and simple recovery. Under mild catalytic reaction conditions (1 bar CO 2 , 60 ℃), ZIF-8 forests show remarkable activities toward the coupling of epoxides and CO 2 with an excellent cyclic carbonate yield of 96%, surpassing the powdered ZIF-8 crystals. Importantly, the catalytic performance can be well-maintained even after 10 cycles and under both simulated flue gas conditions and full-spectrum light irradiation, demonstrating the potential for practical catalysis. Our work provides a practical guideline to produce macroscopic MOF-based materials with great potential for industrial catalysis.

The discharge of dye wastewater threatens the ecology and biological health. Adsorption technology is the preferred treatment method and absorbent is core. In this study, a high-performance ZIF-8@ZIF-67 adsorbent was synthesized by epitaxial growth . XRD and TEM demonstrated the successful synthesis of the core-shell ZIF-8@ZIF-67 and BET showed that the specific surface area, pore volume and diameter of ZIF-8@ZIF-67 were 1518.75 m 2 /g, 0.65 cm 3 /g and 1.71 nm, respectively, with microporous being the predominant. The optimum adsorption conditions for the adsorption of Direct Blue-86 by ZIF-8@ZIF-67 were an initial concentration of 150 mg/g, a ZIF-8@ZIF-67 dosage of 5 mg, and a pH of 8, and the adsorption capacity at this condition was 301.69 mg/g. The mechanism of adsorption on Direct Blue-86 has been speculated to be electrostatic interaction , hydrogen bonding , Lewis acid-base interaction, π-π stacking and coordination. The kinetics of adsorption of Reactive Yellow and Congo Red in the two-component system were both consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic models , with chemisorption being the rate-controlling step and the adsorption rates of Reactive Yellow and Congo Red were both higher than that of one-component system. Meanwhile, they were more consistent with the Langmuir monolayer adsorption models, with maximum adsorption capacities of 261.10 mg/g and 291.55 mg/g, respectively, a decrease of 56.66% and 54.52% compared to that in the one-component system.

The amino functionalization of MOFs has been verified to be effective in improving the selective permeation of CO 2 . However, the introduction of amino groups into ZIF-8 by mixed ligands strategy is hard to achieve due to the high steric hindrance of benzene ring in 2-aminobenzimidazole ligand, resulting in insufficient content of amino groups. Therefore, in this work, polystyrene-acrylate (PSA) template is proposed to provide abundant adsorption and reaction sites for the rapid synthesis of NH 2 -ZIF-8 with high content of 2-aminobenzimidazole. Furthermore, the incomplete etching strategy is used to construct PSA modified hollow NH 2 -ZIF-8 nanospheres (PHNZ). Importantly, the thickness of PSA layer and the hollow size are adjusted by the etching time, as revealed by the SEM and TEM images. In this PHNZ, the modified PSA can provide good interface compatibility between PHNZ and Pebax matrix to enhance the CO 2 selectivity, while the hollow structure can reduce the mass transfer resistance and improve the gas permeability. Moreover, the introduced amino groups can enhance the CO 2 affinity of PHNZ and further improve the CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of the PHNZ-based mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). Benefiting from the synergy of good interface compatibility and enhanced CO 2 affinity from the amino groups, the PHNZ/Pebax MMMs present greatly improved CO 2 /N 2 selectivity in contrast with pure Pebax and NH 2 -ZIF-8 based membranes. Besides, as the etching time increases, the PHNZ-2 and PHNZ-3 based MMMs present a higher CO 2 permeability than that of NH 2 -ZIF-8 based MMM, revealing the significance of the hollow structure. The PHNZ-2/Pebax MMM with filler loading of 10 wt% expresses the best gas separation performance with the CO 2 permeability of 121.9 Barrer and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 96.6, respectively, showing an increase of 54.7 % and 98.0 % in contrast with pure Pebax membrane. Meanwhile, this CO 2 separation performance is far beyond the Robeson upper bound in 2008 and close to the McKeown upper bound in 2019, demonstrating that the proposed PHNZ displays a promising and competitive potential in MMM based CO 2 capture.

The integration of metal–organic frameworks with other functional materials has recently emerged as a promising approach for creating innovative materials for environmental remediation. Here, a nano-sized iron/nickel (Fe/Ni) functionalized zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8-Fe/Ni) was fabricated for oxytetracycline (OTC) removal from wastewater. Cyclic voltammetry and amperometric I-t measurements indicated that OTC was degraded by ZIF-8-Fe/Ni. X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), transmission electron microscopy mapping (TEM-mapping) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated that Fe/Ni was evenly dispersed throughout ZIF-8 and partially oxidized after reaction with OTC. OTC adsorption isotherms and kinetics best fitted the Langmuir isotherm ( R 2 > 0.982) and pseudo-second-order model ( R 2 > 0.997), respectively. Reduction kinetics data followed the pseudo-first-order model ( R 2 > 0.905), where the apparent activation energy ( E a) was 22.9 kJ mol −1 , demonstrating that OTC degradation was mainly via a chemical process. The practical removal efficiency of OTC from real wastewater by ZIF-8-Fe/Ni was 92.6%, where even after application of ZIF-8-Fe/Ni for 5 consecutive removal cycles, a high OTC removal of 74.9% was maintained. Thus ZIF-8-Fe/Ni exhibited both high removal efficiency and good recyclability .
