BACKGROUND Widespread application of controlled-release pesticide delivery systems is a feasible and effective method to improve the utilization efficiency of pesticides. However, owing to the high cost and complicated preparation technologies of controlled-release pesticide delivery systems, their applications in agricultural production have been seriously hindered. RESULTS This study aimed to construct inexpensive photothermally controlled-release pesticide delivery systems using chitosan (CS) and sodium lignosulfonate (LS) as the wall materials, and a coordination assembly strategy of LS with transition metal ions to encapsulate a model pesticide, avermectin (AVM). The resulting complex or nanoparticle photothermal layers in these systems effectively achieved photothermal conversions, and replaced the use of common photothermal agents. In the prepared pesticide-delivery systems, two systems had remarkable photothermal conversion performance and photothermal stabilities with a photothermal conversion efficiency ( η ) of 24.03% and 28.82%, respectively, under 808 nm, 2 W near-infrared irradiation. The slow-release and ultraviolet-shielding performance of these two systems were markedly enhanced compared with other formulations. The insecticidal activities of these two systems against Plutella xylostella under irradiation with light-emitting diode (LED)-simulated sunlight were also enhanced by 5.20- and 5.06-fold, respectively, compared with that without irradiation of LED-simulated sunlight. CONCLUSION Because of their convenient preparations, inexpensive and renewable raw materials, and excellent photothermally controlled-release performance, these on-demand pesticide delivery systems might have significant potential in improving the utilization efficiency of pesticides in modern agriculture. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Although plant essential oils are widely recognized for their synergistic antimicrobial effects in postharvest fruit preservation, their use in food preservation coatings is limited due to their low water solubility and high volatility. To address these limitations, a self-assembling material SPI/SA/GSH (SSG) was developed by introducing glutathione (GSH) into a soy protein isolate (SPI) - sodium alginate (SA). The cinnamon essential oil (CEO) was encapsulated within this self-assembling material using homogenization and sonication techniques, to enhance its preservation capabilities. The solutions and emulsions composed of SPI, SA, SPI/SA physical complex (SS) and SSG particles were compared and evaluated for their structural characteristics and stability, indicating that the introduction of GSH promoted the self-assembly of protein-polysaccharide complexes by breaking disulfide bonds, thereby improving the emulsification and stability of the system. The antibacterial assays showed that the SSG emulsion effectively inhibited the growth of Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ). Notably, the SSG displayed a sustained-release effect for CEO, highlighting its potential for controlled-release applications. Furthermore, fresh-cut cantaloupe treated with the SSG coating experienced reduced mass loss and retained firmness, while maintaining levels of ascorbic acid, total soluble solids (TSS), and titratable acidity (TA) compared to other treatments. These findings underscore the potential of SSG for improving food preservation and extending shelf life.

To extend the alginate applicability for the sustained release of hydrophobic medicine in drug delivery systems, the alkyl alginate ester derivative (AAD), including hexyl alginate ester derivative (HAD), octyl alginate ester derivative (OAD), decyl alginate ester derivative (DAD), and lauryl alginate ester derivative (LAD), were synthesized using the alkyl bromides with different lengths of carbon chain as the hydrophobic modifiers under homogeneous conditions via the bimolecular nucleophilic substitution (SN2) reaction. Experimental results revealed that the successful grafting of the hydrophobic alkyl groups onto the alginate molecular backbone via the SN2 reaction had weakened and destroyed the intramolecular hydrogen bonds, thus enhancing the molecular flexibility of the alginate, which endowed the AAD with a good amphiphilic property and a critical aggregation concentration (CAC) of 0.48~0.0068 g/L. Therefore, the resultant AAD could form stable spherical self-aggregated micelles with the average hydrodynamic diameter of 285.3~180.5 nm and zeta potential at approximately −44.8~−34.4 mV due to the intra or intermolecular hydrophobic associations. With the increase of the carbon chain length of the hydrophobic side groups, the AAD was more prone to self-aggregation, and therefore was able to achieve the loading and sustained release of hydrophobic ibuprofen. Additionally, the swelling and degradation of AAD microcapsules and the diffusion of the loaded drug jointly controlled the release rate of ibuprofen. Meanwhile, the AAD also displayed low cytotoxicity to the murine macrophage RAW264.7 cells. Thanks to the good amphiphilic property, colloidal interface activity, hydrophobic drug-loading performance, and cytocompatibility, the synthesized AAD exhibited a great potential for the development of hydrophobic pharmaceutical formulations. Keywords:alkyl alginate ester derivative;bimolecular nucleophilic substitution reaction;controlled release performance;cytocompatibility;hydrophobic pharmaceutical formulations

The dense extracellular matrix (ECM) and hypovascular networks were often found in solid pancreatic tumors form an impenetrable barrier, leading to limited uptake of chemotherapeutics and thus undesirable treatment outcomes. Methods : A biodegradable nanoplatform based on hollow mesoporous organosilica nanoparticle (HMON) was designed as an effective delivery system for pirfenidone (PFD) to overcome the challenges in pancreatic tumor treatment. By varying pH producing a mildly acidic environment to emulate tumor cells, results in cleavage of the acetal bond between HMON nanoparticle and gating molecular, gemcitabine (Gem), enabling its controlled release. Results : The in vitro and in vivo immunocytochemistry evaluations demonstrated an excellent ECM regulation efficacy of the nanoplatform and therefore the improved penetration of drug into the cells. The technique employed was especially enhanced when mediated with ultrasound target microbubble destruction (UTMD). Evaluations culminated with pancreatic cancer bearing mice and demonstrated therapeutic efficacy, good biodegradability, and negligible systemic toxicity. Conclusion : the designed Gem gated biodegradable nanosystem is expected to provide an alternative way of improving antitumor efficacy by down-regulation of ECM levels and offers a passive-targeted therapy for pancreatic cancer treatment.

Network structure plays a critical role in the performance
of oleogels
for delivering lipophilic bioactives. This study developed curcumin
(Cur)-loaded oleogels, comprising glycerol monolaurate (GML)-based
crystalline networks, whey protein isolate (WPI)-based polymeric networks,
and their hybrid crystalline-polymeric dual-network systems. The hybrid
oleogels showed up to a 90% reduction in creep compliance versus the
pure WPI oleogel, with Lissajous–Bowditch curves further confirming
their enhanced deformation resistance. The DSC melting temperature
increased from 44.5 ° C for the pure GML oleogel to a maximum
of 50.1 ° C for the hybrid oleogels. The oxidative stability index
of the hybrid oleogels reached a maximum of 70.40 h. The hybrid oleogels
prolonged curcumin release from 60 to 150 min in vitro intestinal digestion, with the polymeric network playing a dominant
role. This study showcases the hybrid oleogels as promising delivery
systems.

To address the technical challenge of balancing the stability and bioavailability of conventional iron supplements, this study developed a plant-based composite gel system in which Fe(II) served as both a nutritional factor and an ionic crosslinker. The results showed that the three-dimensional gel network was primarily maintained by hydrophobic interactions. Two-dimensional correlation analysis further indicated that Fe(II) may coordinate with the carboxyl groups of sodium alginate (SA) to form ionic bridges, triggering the dissociation and reconstruction of the hydrogen-bonding network, subsequently inducing soy protein isolate (SPI) conformational unfolding, thereby regulating gel network formation. At an Fe(II) concentration of 0.25%, the in-situ ionic crosslinking degree reached the optimum level, yielding a gel with a hardness of 55.72 ± 0.27 g, the highest storage modulus, and the most uniform pore distribution. The β-sheet content in the SPI secondary structure reached its maximum (38.40%), effectively retarding Fe(II) diffusion and gastrointestinal loss. Overall, this study elucidated the mechanism of Fe(II)-mediated in-situ ionic crosslinking and established the structure–function relationship among crosslinking degree, gel structure and Fe(II) controlled-release behavior. These findings provide a novel food-grade iron supplement for alleviating iron-deficiency anemia and expanding the application of plant protein-based composite gels in active mineral delivery.

Polymeric drug nanocarriers still face critical challenges, including poor water solubility, limited biocompatibility, insufficient drug loading capacity, uncontrolled drug release, and the lack of in situ sensing capabilities. This work aims to develop new polymeric drug nanocarriers with multifunctionalization of drug loading, releasing, and in situ sensing (D-LRS). Firstly, water-dispersible Eu 3+ -induced polymeric nanoaggregates (EIPAs) composed of EuCl 3 , 1,10-phenanthroline, and 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone are synthesized as drug nanocarriers in a polystyrene- block -poly(acrylic acid) aqueous system. The as-synthesized EIPAs have an average diameter of 200 nm and intrinsic luminescence in an aqueous environment, as well as good biocompatibility. Secondly, both doxorubicin ( dox ) and paclitaxel ( pac ) are encapsulated with EIPAs for co-delivery, either separately or together, and the encapsulated drugs are found to be able to achieve pH-responsive controlled release. More importantly, the loading and releasing of the dox and pac drugs could be efficiently in situ monitored by tuning the emission intensity of EIPAs. Thanks to desired water solubility and biocompatibility, as well as intense aqua-luminescence and pH-responsive drug-releasing ability, the smart Eu 3+ -fluorescence-sensible drug carriers could have potential for D-LRS in the combinatory therapy of cancer.

Managing neuropathic pain is challenging due to the complex pathogenetic mechanisms and limited available drugs and therapeutic options. Innovative nanofiber systems offer a novel method to effectively administer therapeutic cytokines, drugs, or small molecule compounds to achieve better relief of neuropathic pain. Here, we report a novel nanofiber with controlled release of IL-10 for implantation into ligated nerve roots and hemisection-injured spinal cords to exert anti-inflammatory effects and attenuate neuropathic pain. An electrospun poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) nanofiber was modified by a polydopamine (PDA) coating, and this nanofiber demonstrated sustained release of IL-10 in vitro. We showed that L5 spinal nerve ligation and T13 spinal cord hemisection induced peripheral and below-level central neuropathic pain in rats, along with the development of neuroinflammation. Spinal IL-10 was also markedly changed after spinal nerve ligation (SNL) or spinal cord injury (SCI), especially in the spinal dorsal horn. Rats were treated postsurgically with IL-10 that was loaded on PDA@PLLA nanofibers as an implantable cytokine delivery system. IL-10 levels were significantly upregulated after the implantation of PDA@PLLA nanofibers in SNL and SCI rats. We further demonstrated that the implantation could inhibit glial activation and neuronal excitability in vivo, along with suppressing the expression levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Most importantly, IL-10-loaded PDA@PLLA nanofiber treatment attenuated the development and maintenance of peripheral and central neuropathic pain. Together, the combination of IL-10 and PDA@PLLA nanofibers provides a novel implantable delivery system for treating neuroinflammatory conditions and may emerge as a promising agent to prevent chronic neuropathic pain.

Synergistic radiosensitization of cancer cells by metal-based nanomaterials and natural products is a forward-looking alternative for radiotherapy enhancement while inhibiting tumor metastasis. This work explores a phase change material (PCM)-gated Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheet as a photothermal-responsive drug delivery system for loading natural trans -resveratrol (RSV), aiming at such synergistic radiosensitization in a controlled manner. This system can improve the biodispersity of RSV in the physiological solutions and inhibit the radiation-enhanced enzymatic activity of Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets to a large extent. Upon 808 nm near infrared light illimitation, Ti 3 C 2 T x -mediated photothermal heating makes the loaded PCM to be melted, resulting in the controlled release of RSV and simultaneous recovery of radiation-enhanced enzymatic activity of Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets. By further irradiating with X-ray, Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets is responsible for enhanced catalytic decomposition of H 2 O 2 to highly toxic hydroxyl radical as well as the consumption of intracellular glutathione . Both in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrate that those excess radical oxygen species can synergize with the released RSV to induce cancer cell death by apoptosis/ferroptosis hybrid pathway, fully inhibiting growth and metastasis of orthotopic breast cancer. These results reveal that the combination of PCM-gated Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets with RSV is capable of fabricating the photothermal-responsive theranostic systems and aiding the confinement of synergistic radiosensitization exclusively in the cancer cells for radiotherapy enhancement against tumor metastasis.

Natural biopolymers have widespread applications in active food packaging attribute to their low-cost, easy availability, environmental-friendly, and excellent processibility. Extensive attention has been paid to integrate or modify nanostructures on biopolymer substrates to endow packaging materials with satisfactory preservation effects. Herein, green γ-cyclodextrin-metal-organic frameworks (γ-CD-MOFs) were successfully integrated on chitosan-cellulose (CS-CEL) polysaccharide film through in situ growth method and encapsulated with carvacrol (CAR) for controlled release active packaging. The γ-CD-MOFs were anchored on CS-CEL film depending on the coordination of glucose units in CS-CEL and potassium ion , which significantly improved the surface area of CS-CEL film from 1.0294 m 2 /g to 43.3458 m 2 /g. Furthermore, the molecular docking and 1 H NMR spectra indicated that γ-CD-MOF has better complexing and stabilizing ability for CAR molecules than γ-CD. Additionally, the inhibition rate of this composite film against Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus and Botrytis cinerea reached more than 99%. The film performed a humidity-controlled release effect on CAR and the release conformed to non-Fick diffusion. The shelf life of strawberries was extended to 7 days after treated with this film during storage. By incorporating the merits of natural biopolymers and MOFs, this novel active packaging offers great potential as a substitute for traditional packaging materials.

This study aimed to develop long-acting controlled release transdermal patches containing ionic liquids (ILs) of weak acid drugs and investigate effects of pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) on drug-ILs loading and release. Here, ketoprofen, flurbiprofen and loxoprofen were chosen as model drugs, and triethylamine was selected as model counterion. Three types of PSAs containing carboxyl (PSA-COOH), hydroxyl (PSA-OH) and non-functional group (PSA-none) were respectively synthesized. Microscopy results showed that the solubility of drug-ILs in PSA-COOH was enhanced up to 4.50 times compared with that in other PSAs. Drug release results showed that the average release percentage of drug-ILs in PSA-COOH (70.97%) had no significant difference with that in PSA-OH (73.22%) and PSA-none (73.47%). While drug skin penetration performances demonstrated that the average skin flux of drug-ILs in PSA-COOH (23.73 μg/(cm 2 h)) was much higher than that in PSA-OH (6.75 μg/(cm 2 h)) and PSA-none (4.32 μg/(cm 2 h)). As illustrated by FTIR, Raman and DSC analysis, ionic hydrogen bonding determined drug-ILs loadings, and interaction strength between drug-ILs and PSA-COOH was the strongest owing to the deprotonated PSA-COO – . Rheology study revealed that decreased storage modulus and increased phase shift angle of PSA-COOH determined drug-ILs release owing to strong plasticization at high drug-ILs loading. Remarkably, the long-acting controlled release patches were successfully developed and molecular mechanisms were revealed.

Ce-based imidazole complex (Ce-IM/ZIF-8) nanoparticles (NPs) were fabricated by doping cerium ions (Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ ) in zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) through a one-pot co-precipitation method. The stimuli-responsive release of Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ species from the Ce-IM/ZIF-8 NPs under acidic conditions was confirmed by UV–Vis spectroscopy. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope were applied to evaluate the corrosion inhibition efficiency of Ce-IM/ZIF-8 NPs on bare aluminum alloy , and it demonstrates that the released Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ , Zn 2+ ions and imidazole could absorb on the surface of Al alloy by chelating effect, forming a compact corrosion barrier on the Al substrate. Furthermore, the Ce-IM/ZIF-8 NPs were encapsulated into epoxy (EP) resin to obtain a composite coating , and it is found that when the NPs addition amount was 1 wt%, the EP-based composite coating exhibits excellent corrosion barrier and promising self-healing ability, with its impedance at 0.01 Hz maintaining 2.2 × 10 8 Ω·cm 2 even after 6 cycles of aging tests (720 h), which could be ascribed to the synergistic inhibition of released Ce ions and imidazole molecules on Al substrate beneath the defective coating.
