In this study, the aggregation of N-octyl-β- d -glucopyranoside (OGP) and cholesteryl grafted sodium alginate derivative (CSAD) in solutions was investigated by surface tension method, fluorescence spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy. Results showed that cholesteryl of CSAD and OGP were adsorbed competitively to the gas–solution interface. Four different conformations of complexes were found with the increasing of OGP concentration (C). When C < critical aggregation concentration (CAC), the OGP stimulates CSAD association. When CAC < C < critical micelle concentration (CMC), the OGP was stimulated by hydrophobic interaction, then it compounded CSAD to form polymer–surfactant complexes and some pearl-chain structure complexes. When CMC < C < adsorbed saturation concentration (C 2 ), the quantity of pearl-chain structure complexes increases, they interact to form core–shell structure complexes, and several core–shell structure complexes formed short string-structures by association of CSAD molecule. When C > C 2 , adsorption amount of OGP to CSAD reached saturation, OGP molecules formed small single OGP micelles , while the string-structures were dissolved because the cholesteryl among the micelles were replaced by the single OGP micelles.

The development of highly active catalysts is crucial for oxidative desulfurization (ODS) to meet the growing demand for sulfur-free fuels. In this study, a defect-rich composite catalyst UiO-DAlaPW was successfully synthesized via mechanochemical grinding, wherein phosphotungstic acid (HPW) was encapsulated within a defect-engineered UiO-66 framework, utilizing D-alanine (DAla) as a bridging molecule. The synthesized catalyst, UiO-DAlaPW, significantly enhances the utilization efficiency of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). In the model oil ODS system, the material exhibited exceptional catalytic performance: achieving deep desulfurization at room temperature within merely 5 min under conditions of extremely low acetonitrile cosolvent usage and a low oxidant/sulfur (O/S) ratio, accompanied by remarkably high H 2 O 2 utilization efficiency. Moreover, the catalyst maintained high desulfurization efficiency even in the absence of acetonitrile. Characterization by XRD, FT-IR, TGA, and XPS confirmed the successful encapsulation of HPW within the UiO-66 framework. Mechanistic studies revealed a significant synergistic effect between UiO-66 and HPW. The effective cooperation of the two active sites, namely Zr in UiO-66 and PW, significantly enhances the catalytic performance, contributing to superior oxidative desulfurization activity.

BACKGROUND The food industry has begun to develop foods fortified with unsaturated fatty acids; however, the susceptibility of pine nut oil to oxidation and other properties limits its use in food production. Researchers often inhibit the oxidation of oil by adding antioxidants. After the combination of polyphenols and proteins, the complex formed can improve or enhance the performance of the emulsion when it stabilizes the emulsion. Encapsulating, protecting, and controlling the release behavior of vitamin D (V D ) during digestion through an emulsion delivery system can effectively overcome limitations such as easy degradation during processing and storage. This research uses tannic acid, gallic acid, tea polyphenol, and vanillic acid to prepare Pickering emulsions, and the type of phenolic compound is explored by multi-dimensional characterization and the amount of emulsion. RESULTS The influence of traits, microstructure, stability, V D load application, and effect on the emulsion matrix's encapsulation rate and bioaccessibility is studied. A method was investigated to enhance the oxidative stability of whey protein isolate-stabilized emulsions by introducing phenol. Pickering emulsions could be obtained in the presence of phenol, while the type of phenol played a relatively important role, probably because the mechanism involved interactions between particles. Viscosity and creaming stability of emulsions increased with crosslinking of phenol in emulsions. In addition, the presence of phenol in emulsions significantly increased the bioaccessibility of encapsulated V D after in vitro digestion. CONCLUSION The method presented in this study was important for improving the oxidative stability of pine nut oil emulsions, expanding the application of pine nut oil in the food industry, and providing the theoretical and application basis of application and active substance emulsion delivery systems. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Oleoresin terpenoids have been widely used in the food , pharmaceutical, and chemical industries. A thorough understanding of oleoresin terpenoid biosynthesis is important for the metabolic engineering of high-valued terpenoid products in plants and microbes and the improvement of oleoresin traits using molecular breeding strategies. TPS-d subfamily members, specific to conifers, determine the oleoresin terpenoid compound diversity. Here, we aimed to identify the TPS-d genes in slash pine ( Pinus elliottii ) and characterize their function and expression patterns in population. Our study reveals two main results: (1) A total of 52 terpene synthase (TPS) candidate genes were identified based on long-read transcripts of slash pine, 12 of which were successfully cloned from the secondary developing xylem RNA. Two levopimaradiene/abietadiene synthases (LAS), one monofunctional isopimaradiene synthase (mISO1)-like, and two α-pinene synthases were identified by comparing with previously known TPS. Next, the two α-pinene synthases and one β-pinene synthase producing multiple products were validated through heterologous expression and in vitro enzyme activity assays, which showed different product profiles from previously identified TPS. (2) The expression status of the cloned TPS genes in 240 slash pine individuals were analyzed. Four exhibited very low expression levels, including those identical to copalyl diphosphate synthases, hemiterpene synthases, diterpene synthases without activity, and one obtained without soluble protein in the heterologous expression. The expression levels of eight TPS genes participating in slash pine oleoresin biosynthesis varied in different individuals and were highly correlated with multiple transcriptional regulators, namely, MYB and MYC. The expression of two α-pinene synthase genes was significantly higher than that of the other TPS genes. Some TPS gene expression levels were positively correlated with the corresponding oleoresin component content. Our results provide an essential reference for exploring the mechanisms of terpene biosynthesis and regulation.

For lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high energy density, it is critical to develop reliable and high-capacity anode materials. In this work, d-Ti 3 C 2 T x /h-BN hybrid layered nanocomposites with uniform distribution are synthesized using a simple liquid phase blending method and investigated as an anode material for LIBs. The results reveal that the uniformly dispersed h-BN anchored on the d-Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets can effectively prevent the d-Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets from restacking during charging and discharging processes, as well as improve the electronic conductivity. The studies show that the electrochemical performance, such as the capacity and cyclic stability, of d-Ti 3 C 2 T x /h-BN electrode is better than that of pure d-Ti 3 C 2 T x materials.

This study aimed to establish a novel method for catalysing salidroside synthesis by immobilized β-D-glucosidase with deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as a new green non-aqueous medium. To this end, the catalytic properties of β-D-glucosidase (i.e. activity, stability, and enzymatic properties) were analysed within sixteen different DESs systems. Although most DESs significantly improved enzyme stability, they also reduced enzymatic activity. This was verified at the molecular level by employing fluorescence spectroscopy to evaluate conformational changes in β-D-glucosidase molecules. Subsequently, chitosan microspheres were used to immobilize β-D-glucosidase; the structures of the microspheres and immobilized enzyme were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Through single factor experiments and application of a response surface design, the optimal conditions for production of salidroside by the reaction of tyrosol with immobilized β-D-glucosidase were established. These conditions comprised 80 vol% ChCl/G (1:2), 50 °C reaction temperature, 5.8 pH, 100 h reaction time, 45 U/mL enzyme dosage, and a tyrosol/D-glucose molar ratio of 10. Under these conditions, the average conversion rate of the tyrosol substrate was 31.6%. Moreover, a salidroside crude product was obtained with a purity >70% (g/g) and a substrate conversion rate of immobilized β-D-glucosidase >50% of its initial value after five repeated uses. Collectively, this study establishes a novel green reaction system for the efficient preparation of salidroside and other glycoside compounds, while also providing a theoretical foundation for the analysis of β-D-glucosidase catalytic reactions in DESs systems.

d -Arabitol is a top value-added compound with wide applications in the food, pharmaceutical and biochemical industries. Nevertheless, sustainable biosynthesis of d -arabitol is limited by lack of efficient strains and suitable fermentation process. Herein, metabolic engineering and process optimization were performed in Zygosaccharomyces rouxii to overcoming these limitations. Adopting systems metabolic engineering include enhancement of innate biosynthetic pathway, supply of precursor substrate d -ribulose-5P and cofactors regeneration, a novel recombinant strain ZR-5A with good performance was obtained, which boosted d -arabitol production up to 29.01 g/L, 59.31 % higher than the parent strain. Further with the optimum medium composition and fed-batch fermentation, the strain ZR-5A finally produced 149.10 g/L d -arabitol with the productivity of 1.04 g/L/h, which was the highest titer ever reported by Z.rouxii system. This is the first report on the use of metabolic engineering to construct Z. rouxii chassis for the sustainable production of d -arabitol.

Purpose This study aims to evaluate the effects of chitosan and D-fructose 1,6-bisphosphate (F16BP) trisodium salt on the acidity of selected Ultisols (Ultisol-QY1, Ultisol-QY2, Ultisol-LX, and Ultisol-YT) and their resistance to soil acidification. Materials and methods The effect of adsorbed chitosan and F16BP on soil acidity was evaluated by interacting different concentrations of the organic substrates with 4.0 g soil under different agitation times (2 to 264 h, 200 rpm, 25 °C). Also, the soils were amended with the organic substrate and incubated for 14 days to determine their effects on soil physicochemical properties. Afterwards, the soil solid phases from the adsorption studies and incubated soil were acidified with different concentrations of nitric acid to simulate soil acidification and activate soil aluminum (Al). Results and discussion The adsorption interactions of chitosan and F16BP with Ultisols demonstrated different potentials in their ability to displace mineral-bound hydroxyl groups and ameliorate soil acidity. The R-PO 4 3− group of F16BP was more effective in displacing the hydroxyl groups through a ligand exchange mechanism and thus showed greater ameliorating effect on soil acidity than chitosan. Compared to lime and F16BP, chitosan-treated soils exhibited the least decrease in pH during soil acidification due to the significant improvement in soil pH buffering capacity (pHBC). Specifically, when amended with chitosan, the pHBC of Ultisol-QY1, Ultisol-QY2, Ultisol-LX, and Ultisol-YT was increased by 262.2%, 88.9%, 337.7%, and 320.6% as opposed to 22.1%, 18.4%, 27.4%, and 83.0% for these Ultisols by F16BP, respectively. Thus, F16BP is a better material to improve soil pH, while chitosan is a better option to improve soil pHBC, inhibit soil acidification, and retard the activation of phytotoxic Al 3+ . By the nature of their functional groups, we deduced that F16BP ameliorated soil acidity by displacing the hydroxyl groups on soils due to adsorption of R-PO 4 3− group through ligand exchange mechanism, while chitosan directly improved pHBC by providing abundant R-NH 2 groups to accommodate excess exogenous H + . Conclusions Chitosan is a promising soil amendment material for use in the management of acidic soils due to its high N content and potential to inhibit soil acidification. Given the readily available raw materials and ease of producing chitosan, long-term incubation studies should be carried out to assess the effect of chitosan on soil pH variations, carbon, and N mineralization.

Controlling the selectivity of CO2 hydrogenation by catalysis is a fundamental challenge. This study examines the interrelation between active sites and reaction pathways in Ni-catalyzed CO2 hydrogenation. The alloying of Ni with Zn to charged (Niσ––Znσ+) active sites modifies the electronic structure and d-band center, weakens the interaction with CO/H2, and preferentially catalyzes the reverse water gas shift to CO with the thermodynamically favored methanation pathway switched off. The charged dual sites can stabilize the activated CO2 species in a η2(C, O) bridge configuration, directly dissociate the C═O bond to *CO, and promote CO desorption. The mechanistic investigation has elucidated the reaction pathways in the Ni-catalyzed CO2 hydrogenation and identified the crucial intermediates that impacted the product selectivity, which can provide a theoretical guide for the Ni-based catalyst design.

Acute liver failure (ALF) is a deadly clinical disorder with few effective treatments and unclear pathogenesis. In our previous study, we demonstrated that aberrant Wnt5a expression was involved in acute-on-chronic liver failure. However, the role of Wnt5a in ALF is unknown. We investigated the expression of Wnt5a and its downstream c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling in a mouse model of ALF established by coinjection of D-galactosamine (D-Gal) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in C57BL/6 mice. We also investigated the role of Box5, a Wnt5a antagonist, in vivo. Moreover, the effect of Wnt5a/JNK signaling on downstream inflammatory cytokine expression, phagocytosis, and migration in THP-1 macrophages was studied in vitro. Aberrant Wnt5a expression and JNK activation were detected in D-Gal/LPS-induced ALF mice. Box5 pretreatment reversed JNK activation and eventually decreased the mortality rate of D-Gal/LPS-treated mice, with reduced hepatic necrosis and apoptosis, serum ALT and AST levels, and liver inflammatory cytokine expression, although the latter was not significant. We further demonstrated that recombinant Wnt5a (rWnt5a)-induced tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) mRNA expression and increased THP-1 macrophage phagocytosis in a JNK-dependent manner, which could be restored by Box5. In addition, rWnt5a-induced migration of THP-1 macrophages was also reversed by Box5. Our findings suggested that Wnt5a/JNK signaling plays an important role in the development of ALF and that Box5 could have particular hepatoprotective effects in ALF.

In this work, an electrochemical sensor was developed based on the delaminated titanium carbide nanosheet (d-Ti 3 C 2 T x ) and fullerene (C 60 ) composite modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The composite materials d-Ti 3 C 2 T x /C 60 were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The prepared modified electrode (d-Ti 3 C 2 T x /C 60 /GCE) exhibited commendable electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of baicalein. Under the optimum detection conditions, the detection of baicalin showed a wide linear range of 0.015–4.0 μM with a detection limit of 0.005 μM. In addition, the d-Ti 3 C 2 T x /C 60 /GCE showed good reproducibility, stability and anti-interference. It was also successfully used for the determination of baicalin in the commercially available Shuanghuanglian oral liquid with satisfactory results.

Microplitis bicoloratus parasitism can induce apoptosis of hemocytes in the M. bicolortus host, Spodoptera litura . However, it is unclear how M. bicolortus parasitism regulates host signaling pathways to induce apoptosis. Expression of cyclophilin D (CypD) and p53 was significantly upregulated in S. litura hemocytes at 6 days postparasitization. In the parasitized hemocytes, there was mitochondrial membrane potential (△Ψ m ) loss, cytochrome c (Cyt C) release from mitochondria, and caspase-3 activation. These occurred while hemocytes were undergoing upregulation of CypD and p53. Parasitism also promoted the interaction between CypD and p53. CypD silencing could rescue the apoptotic phenotypes induced by parasitism, but had no effect on apoptosis in unparasitized S. litura . These findings suggest that the CypD-p53 pathway may be an important component of the parasitism-induced immunosuppressive response and establish a basis for further studies of parasitoid/host interactions. Research highlights Microplitis bicoloratus parasitism upregulates the expression of CypD and p53 and induces host hemocyte apoptosis. M. bicoloratus parasitism promotes the CypD-p53 interaction, resulting in Cyt C release from mitochondria and caspase-3 activation.
