Strengthened s-p orbital hybridization on selenization interphase for stable lean lithium metal batteries

Shouzhe Li,Shaofei Guo,Lingxin Sun,Honghao Gao,Chuanli Di,Qingpeng Jia,Ying Jiang,Zhengqing Ye

Rationally designing a lithiophilic layer on the current collector (CC) is essential for realizing the next-generation high energy density of lean lithium metal batteries (LLMBs). However, challenges caused by the nonuniform Li deposition and fragile solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) severely restrict their commercialization. Herein, a lithiophilic Cu 2 Se layer is fabricated on commercial Cu CCs (Cu 2 Se/Cu) by a facile in-situ selenization approach to fulfill stable and homogeneous Li deposition. The unique s -p hybridization between p x / p y orbitals of Li and Se sites triggers electronic structure reconfiguration and forms the abundant lithiophilic interface. Furthermore, the in-situ generated Li 2 Se/LiF-rich SEI layer not only enhances the adsorption capability, but also decreases the ionic diffusion barrier. Consequently, The Cu 2 Se/Cu based symmetric cell show remarkable cycling stability over 3000 h. The full cell with LiFePO 4 cathode maintains an excellent cycling stability of 88.8 % after 400 cycles at 1C. After pairing with the high-loading sulfur cathodes (6.3 mg cm −2 ), the full cell shows a high areal capacity of 4.3 mAh cm −2 with stable cycling performance at an N/P ratio of 2.6. Therefore, this work highlights the potential of Li-dominant s -p orbital hybridization by incorporating Se sites into commercial Cu CCs for designing high-capacity and cycling reversible LLMBs.

Fe/P Dual-Doped NiMoO4 with Hierarchical Structure for Urea Electrolysis-Assisted Hydrogen Production

Wenxiang Sheng,Xiaoxing Zhou,Yuanhang Ma,Irsa Tariq,Dong Xu,Ping Chen,Peng Li

The urea oxidation reaction (UOR) presents a sustainable pathway for energy-saving hydrogen production by replacing the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water electrolysis. However, developing efficient and stable UOR catalysts remains challenging. NiMoO4 has emerged as a highly efficient UOR catalyst due to its synergistic intermetallic interactions and tunable electronic structure. Leveraging heteroatom doping, we engineered an Fe,P-codoped NiMoO4 nanosheet array anchored on nickel foam (Fe,P-NiMnO4/NF) with dandelion-like hierarchical architecture via a facile hydrothermal-phosphorization approach. Systematic characterization demonstrates that Fe doping creates a porous hierarchical structure, facilitating mass transport and exposing abundant active sites, while P doping simultaneously optimizes the electronic configuration and enhancing hydrophilicity, leading to an expanding electrochemical active surface area. The resulting catalyst exhibits exceptional performance, achieving a current density of 100 mA cm–2 at just 1.345 V (vs RHE) for UOR, alongside a low HER overpotential of 270 mV at the same current density. When employed in a two-electrode overall urea splitting (OUS) system, it delivers 100 mA cm–2 at a cell voltage of 1.6 V with outstanding long-term stability of 50 h. This work introduces a design strategy for high-efficiency electrocatalysts in energy-efficient hydrogen production through urea-assisted electrolysis.

P-Doping Strategy Increasing the Durability of PtCo Nanoparticles for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Jun-Fei Shen,Sheng-Nan Hu,Na Tian,Meng-Ying Li,Shuang-Li Yang,Si-Yi Tian,Ming-Shu Chen,Zhi-You Zhou,Shi-Gang Sun

Highly active and durable electrocatalysts for the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are vital for the large-scale commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Alloying Pt with transition metals is a promising method to enhance the ORR catalytic activity, but the leaching of transition metals is inevitable, which deteriorates the stability. Here, we report the design of a P-doped PtCo electrocatalyst supported on carbon via a facile one-pot hydrothermal method. On the one hand, the introduction of P into the carbon support by phytic acid can enhance the anchoring ability of the PtCo alloy and inhibit the migration of nanoparticles. On the other hand, the doping of P into the lattice of the PtCo alloy further tunes the electronic effect, which improves activity and stability simultaneously. The mass activity of as-prepared P5-PtCo/C at 0.9 V can reach 0.72 A mgPt–1, which is 4.5 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C. After an accelerated durability test (ADT) of 30,000 potential cycles, the mass activity only decreased by 9.4%. Meanwhile, the average particle size of the catalyst slightly increased from 4.94 to 5.15 nm after the ADT of 70,000 potential cycles. This study provides a facile approach for constructing nonmetal-doped PtM catalysts with improved durability for the ORR.

Synthesizing Nanoparticles of Co-P-Se compounds as Electrocatalysts for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Mingshu Xiao,Yuqing Miao,Yanping Tian,Yuhua Yan

A new catalyst based on Co-P-Se compound that is comprised entirely of cheap and earthabundant elements, was first reported for electrolytic hydrogen production . The hydrothermal method at only 473   K was employed to prepare the nanoparticles (NPs) of Co-P-Se compound. The transmission electron microscope images reveal the nanoparticles of quasis-spherical structure and extremely small size with an average diameter of around 5   nm. The composites of Co-P-Se NPs and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) was loaded onto the electrode surface as an active hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst , which is observed using a scanning electron microscopy. The electrochemical study shows that MWCNT helps to load more Co-P-Se catalysts and enhance the electron transfer between catalysts and electrode, and Co-P-Se exhibits more catalytic activity than Co-P or Co-Se alone. A small Tafel slope of 46   mV/dec and good acid stability was observed for the hydrogen evolution reaction of Co-P-Se/MWCNT.

P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE)/PMMA Films with Enhanced Dielectric and Breakdown Properties for EWOD

Yangjie Zhong,Chengming Tang,Jidong Sun,Yafeng Zhang,Shaoxiong Cai,Jiaxin Yu

A dielectric film with high breakdown strength and dielectric constant are crucial for the reliable operation of electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD). In this study, barium titanate (BaTiO3) nanoparticles modified with a silane coupling agent (KH550) were incorporated into poly(vinyl fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE)) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) to prepare a BaTiO3–KH550/P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE)/PMMA composite film to enhance the breakdown strength and dielectric constant of a dielectric layer. Results revealed that BaTiO3–KH550 is uniformly dispersed within the P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE)/PMMA polymer matrix. When the BaTiO3–KH550 content is 10 wt %, the dielectric constant reached 24.6, and the energy density was 2.65 J cm–3, representing increases of 94% and 73%, respectively, compared to the pure P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE)/PMMA film, where was 12.7 and 1.53 J cm–3. Additionally, the breakdown strength of all films remains above 150 kV mm–1 due to the strong interfacial interaction between PMMA and P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE). Furthermore, the breakdown strength can keep at 194.90 kV mm–1. Electrowetting experiments demonstrated that the composite film exhibited a high initial contact angle of 105.04°, with a contact angle variation range of 35.3° under a low DC voltage ranged from 0 to 50 V. The results indicated that this film is potential for applications in low-cost and high-dielectric-performance EWOD dielectric layer materials.

Improving D-carbamoylase thermostability through salt bridge engineering for efficient D-p-hydroxyphenylglycine production

Zhang Landong,Gao Changzheng,Song Wei,Wei Wanqing,Gao Cong,Chen Xiulai,Liu Jia,Liu Liming,Wu Jing

D -p -hydroxyphenylglycine (D-HPG) is an important intermediate in the pharmaceutical industry, and it is commonly synthesized by cascading D-hydantoinase (DHase) and D-carbamoylase (DCase). In this study, the stability of DCase was identified as the main problem that limits its application. Therefore, the complexed structure of Ak DCase (DCase from the Agrobacterium sp . strain KNK712) with the substrate N-carbamoyl-D- p -hydroxyphenylglycine (C p HPG) (with 2.52 Å resolution) and catalytic mechanism were resolved. Based on the catalytic mechanism and electrostatic stabilization, salt bridge engineering was adopted to improve Ak DCase thermostability. The best variant, Ak DCase D30A , increased the T m by 2.91 °C and half-life (t 1/2 ) at 40 and 60 °C by 18.43 h and 23.21 min, respectively. After Ak DCase D30A was assembled with Gs DHase (DHase from Geobacillus stearothermophilus SD-1) in a single Escherichia coli cell, the recombinant strain could produce 29.53 g/L D-HPG within 12 h, with a 97% conversion and a 2.46 g/(L·h) space–time yield (STY). The titer of D-HPG increased by 40.55% compared to the E. coli cell harboring pETduet-1- Ak DCase- Gs DHase. The recombinant strain could be used for two cycles. Our research provides a basis for the industrial production of D-HPG.

Ultrasmall Co3O4 Nanoparticles Confined in P, N-Doped Carbon Matrices for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Jingdong Yang,Xueyan Xu,Xufeng Zhou,Shunqiong Jiang,Wen Chen,Siqi Shi,Da Wang,Zhaoping Liu

Co3O4 nanoparticles with smaller particle size can expose more active sites to react with electrolytes, thereby exhibiting better supercapacitive performance. However, the size of Co3O4 nanoparticles is difficult to be effectively controlled in traditional carbon matrices. Herein, P, N-codoped carbon matrices with ultrahigh surface area and abundant nanocavities are used as a novel host to confine the growth of Co3O4 nanoparticles. The Co3O4/carbon composites with high redox activities of Co3O4 are successfully obtained, in which Co3O4 nanoparticles are strongly anchored in the carbon matrices, resulting in the enhancement of the composites’ capacitive performance (1310 F g–1 at 0.5 A g–1). Meanwhile, the strong anchoring effect of the carbon host on Co3O4 nanoparticles because of the rich doping elements and the confinement effect of the nanocavities ensure long-term stability (92% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles). Furthermore, the assembled asymmetric supercapacitor using this composite as the cathode material and activated carbon as the anode material delivers a high energy density of 47.18 W h kg–1 at 375 W kg–1.

Hydroxyl radicals from P-C3N5 boost bacterial activity for enhanced low-temperature atrazine biodegradation

Zhichao Kang,Yang Yang,Xuerong Han,Chenxu Wang,Jing Yue,Hongwen Yu

Atrazine is a widely used herbicide in global agricultural practices. However, its environmental persistence poses substantial toxicological risks to ecosystems, underscoring the need for effective remediation strategies. In this study, it is demonstrated that a hybrid system integrating the atrazine-degrading bacterium Paenarthrobacter sp. KN0901 with phosphorus-doped C3N5 significantly enhances atrazine removal efficiency under low-temperature conditions. Specifically, this hybrid system achieved a 28.0 % higher atrazine degradation rate compared with the bacterium alone, primarily by stimulating bacterial growth and upregulating metabolic activity. Further mechanistic investigations revealed that C3N5 materials increased intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in KN0901, mainly through enhanced hydroxyl radical generation. Moreover, the hybrid system maintained stable performance across a broad range of pH and temperature conditions. Collectively, these findings provide new mechanistic insights into the role of ROS as a biochemical stimulant in biohybrid systems and offer a promising strategy for designing efficient and resilient bioremediation technologies based on material–microbe synergy.

Gas Sensing Performance and Mechanism of CuO(p)-WO3(n) Composites to H2S Gas

Fang Peng,Yan Sun,Weiwei Yu,Yue Lu,Jiaming Hao,Rui Cong,Jichao Shi,Meiying Ge,Ning Dai

In this work, the compositional optimization in copper oxide/tungsten trioxide (CuO/WO3) composites was systematically studied for hydrogen sulfide (H2S) sensing. The response of CuO/WO3composites changes fromp-type ton-type as the CuO content decreases. Furthermore, thep-type response weakens while then-type response strengthens as the Cu/W molar ratio decreases from 1:0 to 1:10. The optimal Cu/W molar ratio is 1:10, at which the sensor presents the ultrahighn-type response of 1.19 × 105to 20 ppm H2S gas at 40 °C. Once the temperature rises from 40 °C to 250 °C, the CuO/WO3(1:1) sensor presents thep-nresponse transformation, and the CuO/WO3(1:1.5) sensor changes from no response ton-type response, because the increased temperature facilitates the Cu-S bonds break and weakens thep-type CuO contribution to the total response, such that the CuS bond decomposition by a thermal effect was verified by a Raman analysis. In addition, with a decrease in CuO content, the CuO is transformed from partly to completely converting to CuS, causing the resistance of CuO to decrease from increasing and, hence, a weakening mode ofp-CuO andn-WO3to the total response turns to a synergistic mode to it.

Sn/P@G-CNTs composites as high-performance anode materials for sodium-ion batteries

Zhaoxiang Zhang,Shaoqi Li,Shilun Gao,Yiyang Pan,Xinyuan Shan,Hao Feng,Dandan Yang,Huabin Yang

Tin/phosphide (Sn/P) based alloys have been regarded as one of the promising anodes for advanced sodium-ion batteries due to their advantages of low-cost and proper redox potentials to Na/Na + . However, because of the serious volume expansion in the Na storage process, Sn/P-based materials generally suffer from rapid capacity decay during the cycle. Herein, a novel tin/phosphorus@graphite-carbon nanotubes (Sn/P@G-CNTs) composite was synthesized via a rational high-energy ball milling (HEBM) method. SEM and TEM results reveal that the separated Sn/P species are homogeneously dispersed in the G-CNTs matrix, which can accommodate large volume expansion and generate good electrical contact during cycle. As a result, the fabricated Sn/P@G-CNTs electrode exhibits a high reversible capacity (1048 mA h g −1 after 100 cycles at 100 mA g −1 ) with an initial Coulombic efficiency of 79.84% and good rate capability, better than those of Sn/P@G and Sn/P@CNTs counterparts. The design strategy and synthesis method of Sn/P@G-CNTs can provide an insight on constructing cost-effective sodium-ion batteries.

Synthesis, formation mechanism, and intrinsic physical properties of several As/P-containing MAX phases

Hongxiang Chen,Sheng Li,Jun Deng,Zhilong Zhang,Jianeng Huang,Fa Chang,Li Huang,Shixuan Du,Pinqiang Dai

321 phases are an atypical series of MAX phases, in which A = As/P, with superior elastic properties, featuring in the MA-triangular-prism bilayers in the crystal structure. Until now, besides Nb 3 As 2 C, the pure phases of the other 321 compounds have not been realized, hampering the study of their intrinsic properties. Here, molten-salt sintering (MSS) and solid-state synthesis (SSS) were applied to synthesize As/P-containing 321 phases and 211 phases. Analyzing the phase composition of the end-product via multiple-phase Rietveld refinement, we found that MSS can effectively improve the purity of P-containing MAX phases, with the phase content up to 99% in Nb 3 P 2 C and 75.4(5)% in Nb 2 PC. In contrast, MSS performed poorly on As-containing MAX phases, only 8.9(4)% for Nb 3 As 2 C and 64(2)% for Nb 2 AsC, as opposed to the pure phases obtained by SSS. The experimental analyses combined with first-principles calculations reveal that the dominant formation route of Nb 3 P 2 C is through NbP + Nb + C → Nb 3 P 2 C. Moreover, we found that the benefits of MSS on P-containing MAX phases are on the facilitation of three considered chemical reaction routes, especially on Nb 2 PC + NbP → Nb 3 P 2 C. Furthermore, the intrinsic physical properties and Fermi surface topology of two 321 phases consisting of electron, hole, and open orbits are revealed theoretically and experimentally, in which the electron carriers are dominant in electrical transport. The feasible synthesis methods and the formation mechanism are instructive to obtain high-purity As/P-containing MAX phases and explore new MAX phases. Meanwhile, the intrinsic physical properties will give great support for future applications on 321 phases.

Synthesis of hyperbranched Co-Ni-P nanocrystals and their splitting degree dependent HER performances

Wenli Pei,Xiaoyang Wang,Chunhong Liu,Dong Zhao,Chun Wu,Kai Wang,Qiang Wang

Hyperbranched transition metal phosphides (TMPs) nanocrystals are an interesting class of materials, which can be used as an efficient catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, big challenge remains for the preparation of ternary hyperbranched TMPs, and relationship between their HER performances and the splitting degree is also not well understood. Here, hyperbranched Co-Ni-P nanocrystals with different splitting degrees were prepared via a novel strategy, and their alkaline HER performances were studied. During the synthesis process, hyperbranched Co 2 P nanocrystals were used as template, and Ni precursors were injected into the reaction solution at different holding stage. When the Ni precursor was injected earlier, the podgy particles with low splitting degree would be obtained. Conversely, delaying the injection of Ni precursor would lead to high splitting degree. The formation process of ternary phase was also studied. After Ni precursor was injected, a Co-Ni-P amorphous layer was formed on the surface of the Co 2 P particles, and then the Ni atoms diffused into the Co 2 P phase to form Co-Ni-P nanocrystals. Electrochemical performances tests show that the splitting degree has great impact on HER performances. The higher splitting degree usually leads to larger electrochemical surface area, and higher catalytic activity can be achieved. The sheaf-like Co-Ni-P nanocrystals demonstrate a small overpotential of 119 mV at current density of 10 mA cm −2 , and good durability over 23 h in 1 M KOH solution. We believe that this work can help understand the relationship between the HER performances of hyperbranched TMPs nanocrystals and their splitting degree, and provide a synthetic strategy for the preparation of highly efficient TMPs catalysts.
