Flavonoids are phenolic substances naturally distributed in plants with potential antidiabetic activity through the inhibition of α-glucosidase. Therefore, the present study investigated the inhibitory effects of α-glucosidase activity by purified flavonoids (PF) isolated from Moringa oleifera leaves before and after simulated gastric digestion in the absence or presence of nitrate. Furthermore, the combined effects of PF, chlorogenic acid and acarbose to reduce the acarbose dosage that caused 50% inhibition of α-glucosidase activity were studied by using CompuSyn software. Five flavonoids (rutin, kaempferol acetyl glycoside , kaempferol 3-O-glucoside, quercetin-3-glucoside and quercetin-3-acetyl-glucoside) were identified by HPLC-ESI-MS. The results showed that at a concentration of 100 μg/mL, flavonoids and acarbose inhibited α-glucosidase activity by 54.41% and 69.17%, respectively. Lineweaver-Burk plots revealed uncompetitive inhibition of α-glucosidase by PF. Flavonoids caused an 8.17 times reduction in acarbose concentration which was required to inhibit α-glucosidase. In the absence or presence of nitrate, the inhibitory activity decreased by 48.44% and 72.12%, respectively, after simulated gastric digestion when compared with undigested flavonoids. Rutin and kaempferol 3- O -glucoside showed the highest stability in the simulated gastric liquid, while quercetin-3-acetyl-glucoside and kaempferol 3- O -glucoside exhibited the highest stability in the simulated gastric liquid in the presence of nitrate.

Hollow and porous α-Fe 2 O 3 nanotubes were successfully synthesized by single nozzle electrospinning method followed by annealing treatment. The crystal structures and morphologies of the as-prepared materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The as-prepared materials were applied to construct gas sensor devices which gas sensing properties were further investigated. The obtained results revealed that porous α-Fe 2 O 3 nanotube gas sensors exhibit a markedly enhanced gas sensing performance compared with hollow α-Fe 2 O 3 nanotube gas sensors, which was about three times higher to 100 ppm acetone at 240 °C. Interestingly, hollow and porous α-Fe 2 O 3 nanotube gas sensors both showed fast response–recovery time and good selectivity, but the porous ones possessed the shorter recovery time. The improved properties could be attributed to the unique morphology of porous nanotubes. Thus, further improvement of performance in metal-oxide-semiconductors materials could be realized by preparation the unique porous structures of nanotubes. Moreover, it is expected that porous metal-oxide-semiconductors nanotubes could be further design as promising candidates for gas sensing materials.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries are attracting considerable attention because of their high safety compared with conventional lithium-ion batteries. Manganese-based materials have been widely developed for zinc-ion batteries cathode owning to their low cost, high security and simple preparation. However, the severe volume expansion and poor stability during charging and discharging limit the further development of manganese-based cathodes. Herein, superior α -MnO 2 @g-C 3 N 4 was successfully prepared for stable zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) cathode by introducing g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets. Compared with pure α -MnO 2 , α -MnO 2 @g-C 3 N 4 has a specific capacity of 298 mAh·g –1 at 0.1 A·g –1 . Even at 1 A·g –1 , the α -MnO 2 @g-C 3 N 4 still retains 100 mAh·g –1 (83.4% retention after 5000 cycles), implying its excellent cycling stability. The α -MnO 2 @g-C 3 N 4 -based cathode has the highest energy density (563 Wh·kg –1 ) and power energy density (2170 W·kg –1 ). This work provides new avenues for the development of a wider range of cathode materials for ZIBs.

Background. Ficus pandurata H. (Moraceae) is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine as a healthy food condiment or a medicine for treatment of various diseases including inflammation. Objective. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the phytochemical compositions and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of crude water (FPW) and ethanolic extracts (FPE) from Ficus pandurata H. Methods. Phytochemical compositions were identified by a high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry method (HPLC-ESI-MS). The antioxidant activities were evaluated by diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and hydroxyl radical assays, and the anti-inflammatory activities were evaluated by paw edema and levels of inflammatory mediator TNF-α and PGE2 in monosodium urate (MSU) crystal-induced rats. Results. Six compounds were identified by HPLC-MS method, and abundance of phenolics was found in FPE. The FPE showed concentration-dependent-significant scavenging of DPPH and hydroxyl radicals with IC50 values 118.4 and 192.9 μg/mL, respectively. The FPE treatment significantly inhibited the paw edema and the production of TNF-α and PGE2 in MSU crystal-induced rats. Conclusion. The FPE exerted stronger antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities which may be attributed to its high phenolic content.

Summary The investigation aimed at determining the impact of sequential simulated digestion on the physicochemical properties and digestive enzymes inhibitory effects of the polysaccharides fraction (MLP-2) of Morus alba L. leaves as well as its in vitro fermentation behaviours. After artificial salivary, gastric and intestinal digestions, the chemical components and microstructure of MLP-2 were altered with significantly ( P < 0.05) decreased molecular weight. The α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities of MLP-2 were significantly ( P < 0.05) improved throughout simulated digestion. MLP-2I, the intestinal digested fraction of MLP-2, could significantly ( P < 0.05) decrease the pH value of fermented culture and increase the short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) concentrations, especially acetic, propionic and butyric acids. In conclusion, MLP-2 could be gradually degraded under simulated digestion with altered physicochemical properties and enhanced α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory effects, and further utilised by human gut microbiota to decrease pH value and promote SCFA production.

T2DM (Type 2 diabetes mellitus) is a chronic metabolic disease typically managed with medications that often cause undesirable side effects, highlighting the urgent need for safe and effective natural alternatives. In this study, Baijiu distillers’ grains (BDGs) from Xiaojiao Baijiu were used to screen and identify anti-α-glucosidase peptides. The fraction under 3 kDa of the hydrolyzate generated by alcalase demonstrated the most potent inhibitory activity. This fraction was subsequently separated by RP-HPLC, resulting in the most effective subfraction, F2–2, with an inhibitory rate of 77.33 ± 1.15%. Six potential antidiabetic peptides (AAPFYAL, LAYPQ, IRLPFNQI, INPALPW, ATPVFL, SSSSAVVG) were identified from F2–2, with AAPFYAL showing the highest inhibitory activity (IC50 = 363.77 μM). Molecular docking demonstrated that these peptides competitively bind to key residues of α-glucosidase (such as D327, D542) via hydrogen bonds, which was further confirmed by pharmacophore model analysis. Our findings demonstrate that Xiaojiao BDGs are promising hypoglycemic resources.

The advancement of wireless communication technologies necessitates materials that absorb electromagnetic waves and shield against electromagnetic interference. The research is propelled by the necessity to develop materials that possess both properties. Here, an electromagnetic wave-absorbing material that synergistically regulates dielectric and magnetic properties is developed. The material features a nanowire fabric/multilayer composite structure of expanded graphite@α-MnO 2 (EG@MO). The manganese oxide nanowires are prepared in situ on the surface of multilayer expanded graphite via microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesis. A rapid microwave activation process is subsequently performed to convert manganese oxide-hydroxide, elevating its oxidation state, and transforming it from a non-magnetic form to the magnetic α-MnO 2 . The EG@MO exhibits exceptional electromagnetic wave absorption capabilities, achieving a reflection loss value of −75.56 dB, with a low filler ratio of 7 wt.% and an ultrathin thickness of 1.48 mm. This high-performance electromagnetic absorption material, fabricated by integrating magnetic manganese dioxide nanowires with multilayer expanded graphite, shows excellent widespread applications.

The widespread implementation of hydrogen energy is critically constrained by the challenge of storage. Aluminum hydride (α-AlH 3 ), a binary hydride stable under ambient conditions with high volumetric hydrogen density, represents a promising candidate. However, when it is traditionally prepared from lithium aluminum hydride (LiAlH 4 ) and aluminum chloride (AlCl 3 ), the process is cost-prohibitive for scale-up. This study presents a cost-effective synthesis strategy by systematically investigating the effects of different molar ratios of LiAlH 4 /NaAlH 4 /AlCl 3 (4:0:1, 1:3:1, 0.5:3.5:1, 0:4:1). Results indicate that the introduction of LiAlH 4 significantly enhances reaction efficiency and kinetics. The optimal ratio of 1:3:1 effectively compensated for the slower kinetics of NaAlH 4 , achieving over 94% conversion of AlCl 3 to AlH 3 ·nEt 2 O etherate. Desolvation studies revealed that AlH 3 ·nEt 2 O derived from NaAlH 4 required higher temperatures for complete phase transformation, whereas systems with LiAlH 4 content below 25% were insufficient to effective desolvation. The α-AlH 3 crystals produced from the 1:3:1 ratio exhibited a well-defined cubic morphology and high thermal stability, with a decomposition temperature of 165 °C. By replacing 75% of the costly LiAlH 4 with NaAlH 4 , this hybrid approach achieved an approximately 50% reduction in the material cost. These findings provide critical process parameters and a viable pathway for the cost-effective, large-scale production of high-performance α-AlH 3 for hydrogen storage applications.

Kaempferol (KAE) is a dietary flavonoid with recognized effects on glucolipid metabolism and oxidative stress, but its poor lipophilicity and low bioavailability limit its application. In this study, KAE derivatives with different fatty acid chain lengths (C2–C12) were synthesized using acylation catalyzed by lipozyme TL IM, and their biological activities were then systematically evaluated. In vivo assays in hyperglycemic zebrafish ( Danio rerio ) demonstrated that two medium-chain derivatives, 4’- O -octanoyl-kaempferol (C8-KAE) and 4’- O -decanoyl-kaempferol (C10-KAE), exerted superior effects on glucose regulation, lipid metabolism, and oxidative stress compared with KAE. RT–qPCR analysis showed that C8-KAE and C10-KAE more effectively coordinated the expression of key genes governing gluconeogenesis, glycogen synthesis, lipogenesis, and fatty acid oxidation, indicating multi-target regulation of glucolipid homeostasis. Subsequent in vitro tests confirmed their stronger α-glucosidase inhibitory activity than KAE, while molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulations, and MM/GBSA binding free energy analyses consistently indicated more stable and favorable binding interactions with the enzyme. These findings indicate that medium-chain acylation is an efficient strategy to upgrade KAE into more potent modulators of glucolipid metabolism and identify C8-KAE and C10-KAE as promising lead compounds.

Inhibiting α-glucosidase activity by secondary metabolites has been confirmed as an effective strategy for treating type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). α-Glucosidase inhibitory activity was determined by different parts of Gleditsia sinensis Lam. (GSL) extracts. The thorn of the GSL methanol extract exhibited the highest activity (IC 50 = 0.21 mg/mL). Eleven potential α-glucosidase inhibitors were detected by Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography Quadrupole Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry, and fisetin was screened as the dominant compound (IC 50 = 0.211 µM) through virtual screening, correlation analysis, and inhibitory assay. Fluorescence quenching experiment explained that fisetin inhibited α-glucosidase through hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic forces in a reversible and non-competitive mode. Three-dimensional fluorescence and circular dichroism demonstrated that fisetin modified the amino acids’ microenvironment and disrupted the hydrogen-bonded network of α-glucosidase. α-Glucosidase was bounded with fisetin by hydrogen (Thr448, His515, Asp346, and Gln531) and hydrophobic residues (His515, Lys352, and Ala349) simulated by molecular docking. This study points out the fisetin’s inhibitory mechanism of α-glucosidase, indicating that it is a promising natural ingredient in T2DM treatment.

In rheumatoid arthritis (RA), circulating platelets (PLTs) migrate to the inflamed synovium and interact with inflammation-resident cells, thereby amplifying inflammatory cascades. Moreover, these PLTs become overactivated and rapidly release α-granule contents in response to an inflammatory stimulus. Thus, the preferential incorporation of therapeutics into α granules can facilitate inflammation-homing trafficking and on-demand drug release. Due to the close crosstalk between PLTs and multiple inflammation-resident cells, precise modulation of PLTs dysfunction holds potential to inhibit the pathological cellular interaction and inflammatory cascades. Owing to the high P-selectin expression on both PLT membranes and α granules, we synthesize a P-selectin-targeted and resveratrol (Res)-loaded nanoparticle BFNPs@Res. After intravenous administration, BFNPs@Res selectively bind to circulating PLTs and accumulate in α granules. These BFNPs@Res-incorporated PLTs subsequently migrate to the inflamed synovium and release therapeutic payloads stored in α granules responding to inflammatory stimulus. Meanwhile, after internalization by PLTs, BFNPs@Res effectively suppress pathological PLTs activation and disrupt their crosstalk with inflammatory cells. In arthritic rats, BFNPs@Res attenuate PLT-mediated inflammatory cell recruitment and effectively alleviate RA symptoms. To our knowledge, this is the first report of exploiting the inflammatory homing and stimulus-responsive α granule release of PLTs for inflammation-targeted delivery, providing new insight for RA therapy.
