The photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation performance of α-Fe2O3 photoanodes is jointly restricted by their high charge recombination and sluggish water oxidation kinetics. Herein, through coupling Ag and CdS nanoparticles with an α-Fe2O3 nanorod film, a new kind of α-Fe2O3/Ag/CdS ternary heterojunction film was constructed and investigated as a photoanode for solar water oxidation. The resultant α-Fe2O3/Ag/CdS photoanode can take full advantages of the α-Fe2O3/CdS heterojunction and the properties of Ag nanoparticles. Specifically, the formation of the α-Fe2O3/CdS heterojunction improves the charge separation and transfer efficiency of the α-Fe2O3 photoanode through band potential differences. Meanwhile, the presence of Ag nanoparticles enlarges the absorption edge of α-Fe2O3/CdS and decreases the electron–hole recombination through their surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect. In addition, the electrocatalytic properties of Ag nanoparticles could initiate the water oxidation on the α-Fe2O3/Ag/CdS photoanode jointly. As a result, a higher photocurrent density of 3.25 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE was achieved on the α-Fe2O3/Ag/CdS photoanode during water oxidation, which is 2.5 times higher relative to the photocurrent of the α-Fe2O3 photoanode. Furthermore, the onset potential of water oxidation on the α-Fe2O3/Ag/CdS photoanode was negatively shifted about 220 mV relative to the α-Fe2O3 photoanode due to its faster kinetics. With the protection of the amorphous TiO2 layer, the water oxidation activity of the α-Fe2O3/Ag/CdS photoanode can be steadily maintained even after 10 h of reaction at 1.23 V vs. RHE. The present work provides an efficient strategy for the development of α-Fe2O3-based ternary heterojunction photoanodes for solar water oxidation.

We reported an efficient fabrication strategy for a three-dimensional structure based on large-area flexible carbon fiber cloth decorated by Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs-CFC). AgNPs with different sizes and morphologies were assembled on the surface of the CFC via a vacuum thermal evaporation and high-temperature annealing method. Samples with Ag film thickness of 5 nm, 10 nm, 15 nm, 20 nm, 30 nm and 50 nm were prepared and analyzed. The forming mechanism of AgNPs on the surface of CFC was studied in detail. Finite element numerical simulations with COMSOL Multiphysics were carried on to show the electronic field distributions of different samples based on SEM images. Raman measurements with Rhodamine 6G (R6G) molecules as analytes indicated that the analytical enhancement factor (AEF) reaches to 2.4×1012 and a detection limit is as low as 1.0×10−14 mol/L.

In this study, we found that spermine (SPM) could enhance electrochemiluminescence (ECL) intensity of Au−Ag bimetallic nanoclusters (Au−Ag BNCs) with triethylamine (TEA) as a co-reactant. An ECL sensor was fabricated to detect SPM, which contained Au−Ag BNCs as ECL emitters and conductive hydrogel containing polyaniline-amino trimethylene phosphonic acid (PANI-ATMP) as an immobilizing matrix. The increased ECL intensity of SPM was linear with the logarithm of concentrations of SPM in the range of 1 pM to 10 μM with high selectivity, excellent stability, and the limit of detection is 0.11 pM (S/N=3). This sensor realized the detection of SPM in urine samples, which was fast and economic, possessing potential applications for SPM detection in clinical and bioanalysis.

Adsorption desulfurization represents an alternative technology for the effective removal of thiophenic compounds from fuels. Metal−organic frameworks have been the ideal candidates for the adsorptive desulfurization of fuel due to the high surface areas. Pristine UiO-66 is thought to be appropriate for the removal of small thiophenic compounds. This work developed a new type of hierarchical-pore (micro and mesopores) UiO-66 with a higher specific surface area and porosity for the removal of larger adsorbates using MOF-5 as the template. To enhance adsorption desulfurization performance, the Ag + -exchanged hierarchical-pore UiO-66 (HP-UiO-66-SO 3 Ag) with π-complexation was synthesized by the ion-exchange method. The HP-UiO-66-SO 3 Ag samples were characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM, TEM, and N 2 adsorption–desorption isotherms. Compared with the original UiO-66, the HP-UiO-66-SO 3 Ag has a higher specific surface area, pore volume, and pore size. The static adsorption experiments showed that HP-UiO-66-SO 3 Ag had a high adsorption capacity for thiophene and benzothiophene . Moreover, the HP-UiO-66-SO 3 Ag sample still exhibits high adsorptive performance in the presence of toluene. The regeneration results show that about 90% of the initial adsorption capacity of HP-UiO-66-SO 3 Ag can be regenerated after four cycles.

The work described a new colorimetric sensor for the quantitative detection of clindamycin based on Au@Ag core–shell nanoparticles (Au@Ag NPs). The obtained Au@Ag NPs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and ultraviolet and visible spectrophotometry (UV–vis). When Au@Ag NPs were added to a clindamycin solution, it can be observed that the color immediately changed from bright yellow to gray-blue and the absorption spectrum also changed, realizing the visual detection of clindamycin. Under optimal conditions, the absorption ratio (A546/A400) of the UV–vis spectra increased linearly with the concentration of clindamycin ranging from 6.25 × 10–7 to 7.50 × 10–6 mol/L (R2 = 0.9945), with a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.00 × 10–7 mol/L and good recovery of 100.0–102.0% (relative standard deviation (RSD) < 2%). The detection process was convenient without complicated instruments. Compared with other analytes, the Au@Ag NPs detection system has good selectivity for clindamycin. In addition, the Au@Ag NPs colorimetric sensor was successfully used to determine clindamycin in human urine samples. This study provides a simple, rapid, intuitive, and low-cost visualization analysis method of clindamycin, which was helpful for the visualization detection of other targets.

Electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) offers an appealing route to simultaneously store intermittent renewable energy as value-added chemicals and close carbon cycle. Silver (Ag) catalyst is a promising candidate for the electrochemical conversion of CO 2 to CO, but the electrocatalytic properties are still insufficient for practical applications. Herein, we put forward a strategy to in situ reconstruct a heterogeneous Ag 2 S/Ag interface structure, in which their strong interactions facilitate CO 2 RR performance. The in situ reconstructive Ag 2 S/Ag catalyst achieves a large current density of 421.7 ± 14.4 mA cm –2 at –0.70 V vs . reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and maintains steadily at a current density of 244.5 ± 31.8 mA cm –2 and CO Faradaic efficiency of 99.1 ± 0.8 % at –0.49 V vs . RHE for 50 h, superior to state-of-the-art CO-selective Ag-based catalysts. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the in situ reconstructive Ag 2 S/Ag interface active sites stabilize the *COOH intermediate during CO 2 RR process.

A structured SERS substrate with high uniformity and sensitivity was fabricated orderly by hydrophilizing the monocrystalline silicon substrate, self-assembling a layer of dense polystyrene (PS) microsphere array on the silicon, and depositing a layer (5 nm, 10 nm, 20 nm, 30 nm or 50 nm) of silver film. Rhodamine 6G (R6G) was used as a probe to characterize the performance of Raman enhancement. Experimental results show that our sample with deposition of a 5 nm silver film (PS-Ag-5) can obtain a large number of spatially distributed local electromagnetic field hot spots, with an enhancement factor of over 108, which is several orders of magnitude higher than that of other samples. The sensitivity of PS-Ag-5 to the concentration of probe molecules and the optical enhancement effect of PS microspheres were also analyzed. This novel structured substrate can achieve considerable uniformity, and the calculated relative standard deviation (RSD) of the characteristic peak at 1650 cm-1 is approximately 8%.

The spectroscopy of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), with its high sensitivity and specific chemical fingerprinting, has received increasing attention. A stable substrate is extraordinarily important for the trace detection of the SERS technique, but the challenge of SERS substrate production with high stability and uniformity still imposes the unavoidable barriers. In this paper, we design a multilayer core–shell-nanostructured ZrO2@Ag@SiO2 nanoparticle through liquid extraction. First, we regulated the usage of AgNO3 (1 wt %) to obtain Ag@SiO2 which is silver coated with uniform distribution; on the surface of silica, the number of silver particles is abundant. Then, we discussed the influence when different concentrations of zirconium propoxide are added on the zirconia layer’s thickness. Then, we applied FDTD simulation to explain the position of SERS “hotpots” with and without ZrO2 coating. We have found that the detection capability of ZrO2@Ag@SiO2 can be up to 10–9 M for 4-ATP; with ZrO2@Ag@SiO2 SERS substrates exposed to the atmospheric environment for up to 30 days, we could still obtain the excellent SERS signal performance contributed by the good chemical stability of ZrO2, when ZrO2 is coated on the surface of Ag@SiO2, the zirconia layer formed has a protective role . These experimental results have indicated that the outer zirconia layer could prevent the silver surface from being oxidized, ensuring its stability , which is quite crucial for the applied SERS.

It is still a challenge to identify the intrinsic electrocatalytic activity of single MoS2 quantum dots (QDs) because their characterization usually dissects contributions from a large amount of particles. Herein, we demonstrate a single-entity electrochemical method to help us investigate the enhancing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity at the single MoS2 QD level by using silver ultramicroelectrodes (UMEs). At Ag UMEs, the i–t response for MoS2 QD collision consists of repeated current “spikes” that return to the background level as hydrogen formation and covering the QD surface. In contrast, a stepwise “staircase” i–t response is observed for MoS2 QDs colliding on carbon UMEs (C UMEs). The results also show that the current density of single MoS2 QD collision on Ag UMEs is much higher than on C UMEs, revealing the impact of the unique property of the metal–MoS2 interface on HER performance, which has been demonstrated by thermodynamic analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It has been found that the interactions between MoS2 QDs and substrate UMEs lead to significant changes in the hydrogen adsorption energies (ΔEads) and Gibbs free energy (ΔGH), resulting in the difference in HER activity.

In this paper, Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) are prepared using wet chemical reduction transfer of dense AuNPs film by self-assembly to the surface of Ag grating, which is inverted from the inner DVD after evaporation. The Ag grating/AuNPs self-assembly hybrid substrate commonly used in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) research is produced. The coupling effect between AuNP-AuNP and AuNPs-Ag slugs can evidently enhance the local electric field. Experimental results show that the hybrid SERS substrate can detect 10−9 M Rh6G, and the enhancement factor reaches 4.4 × 105. This small, cheap hybrid substrate has enormous potential in the field of SERS sensing.

The preparation of small-sized nanostructures with the plasmon wavelength beyond ∼1000 nm is strongly needed. Herein we report on the deposition and galvanic replacement process on Au nanobipyramid-embedded Ag nanorods with the assistance of the added Au precursor to form Ag nanobones, leading to the resultant red plasmon shifts reaching up to ∼140 nm when the volume was decreased. The large red-shift of the plasmon wavelength was ascribed to the increase in the aspect ratio via the selective etching of the Ag nanorods from the necks, which is verified by further etching experiments and electrodynamic simulations. The plasmon wavelength of the etched nanorods can be extended to the entire region of the second biological transparency window by employing different lengths of Ag nanorods with numerous longitudinal dipolar plasmon wavelengths, suggesting the generality of our approach. This study proposes a new nanostructure that can be applied in the near-infrared applications, and it also provides a new route to regulate the plasmon wavelength.

The bacteria, which usually contaminate water environment, often cause terrible infectious diseases thus seriously threaten people’s health. To meet the increasing requirement of the public health care, an easily separable nanomaterial with sustainable anti-bacteria performance is required. This work reports a Fe3O4@PDA/Ag/PDA core-shell nanosphere in which the Ag nanocrystals immobilized on the magnetic carrier are protected by an external polydopamine (PDA) layer. The magnetic hybrid nanospheres are constructed by a tunable coating method and the particle parameters can be effectively controlled by the experimental condition. The antibacterial potential of the nanospheres is evaluable by using theStaphylococcus aureusandEscherichia colias the models. The results indicate the Fe3O4@PDA/Ag/PDA core-shell nanospheres have a high antibacterial performance by measuring the minimum inhibitory concentration and the minimum bactericidal concentration. Finally, the product is expected to have a sustainable activity because the protecting PDA layer reduce the releasing rate of the Ag+ions and the materials can be magnetically recovered from the media after the disinfection procedure.Keywords:core-shell;magnetic;Ag;antibacterial;polydopamine
