Preparation of VO2/Al-O core-shell structure with enhanced weathering resistance for smart window

Kun Tong,Rong Li,Jingting Zhu,Heliang Yao,Huaijuan Zhou,Xianzhe Zeng,Shidong Ji,Ping Jin

VO 2 /Al-O core-shell structure (V/AO) was synthesized by a facile method and its application for thermochromic film on smart window was investigated. Comparisons of thermochromic properties and stabilities in different environments between VO 2 and annealed V/AO nanoparticles were made. As a result, VO 2 nanoparticle was easily oxidized and lost thermochromic property. In contrast, with the protection provided by Al-O-based shell, the VO 2 core remained stable at a high temperature (350   °C in air) and in H 2 O 2 solution. Especially, thermochromic films made by annealed V/AO nanoparticles almost kept thermochromic performance in damp heating environment (T=60   °C, RH=90%) for 20 days while VO 2 films lost their thermochromic properties after 3 days. Besides, the degradation progress of VO 2 and V/AO nanoparticles in damp heating environment was also explored. Results indicate that Al-O-based shell provides a good protection for the VO 2 core originated from the compact structure of shell, which effectively prevents oxygen and water from eroding VO 2 . In summary, the VO 2 nanoparticles coated with Al-O-based shell exhibit a great potential in the application of smart window.

Polyamide nanofiltration membranes modified with Zn–Al layered double hydroxides for natural organic matter removal

Yu Zhao,Nana Li,Shengji Xia

Zn–Al layered double hydroxides (LDH) modified polyamide (PA) nanofiltration (NF) membranes were successfully fabricated by interfacial polymerization of 1,3-Phenylene diamine (MPD) and 1,3,5-Benzenetricarbonyl trichloride (TMC) monomers . Compared to raw PA membranes, the LDH incorporated membranes showed denser PA layers with more leaf-like folds, rather than ridges and valleys, according to images from field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). Higher hydrophilicity (with the contact angle decreased from 70.33° to 55.66°) and water permeability (with pure water flux enhanced from 6.76 to 9.48 L/m 2  h, measuring approximately 40.2% improvement) were achieved by PA membranes embedded with Zn–Al LDH nanoparticles . The rejection ability of different membranes was evaluated using Aldrich-humic acid (HA) and water from the Huangpu River; the results indicated that PA/LDH membranes exhibited a higher removal efficiency of natural organic matter (NOM). Excitation–emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy was also used in analysing raw natural water and permeate to investigate the removal mechanism toward different types of organic matters; better antifouling properties were observed for modified PA membranes.

Monodispersed Pd Nanoparticles Supported on Mg–Al Mixed Metal Oxides: A Green and Controllable Synthesis

Zhiyi Wu,Qiangqiang Zhu,Chun Shen,Tianwei Tan

Aimed at the green synthesis of supported noble metal nanoparticles without any additional reducing agents or stabilizers at room temperature, a new strategy in which monodispersed Pd nanoparticles were successfully immobilized on Mg–Al mixed metal oxides derived from layered double hydroxides was developed, and the reduction mechanism was also proposed. It allowed the in situ immobilization of monodispersed Pd nanoparticles with a face-centered cubic structure, using only alcohols with α-hydrogen atom as the solvent and reducing agent. Control over the mean particle size and content of Pd nanoparticles was realized by adjusting the temperature, initial concentration, and type of alcohol. With the content of Pd varied from 6.4 to 42.3 mg/g, the mean particle size of Pd increased from 1.1 to 4.9 nm. The as-prepared catalyst showed high catalytic activity for oxidation of benzyl alcohol: when the Pd content was 6.4 mg/g, conversion of 60.3% and selectivity of 99.2% were obtained with a turnover frequency of 4807 h–1. Similarly, on the basis of the high stand electrode potentials, immobilized Ag (5.6 nm) and Au (4.7 nm) nanoparticles were also prepared through this methodology. Moreover, the choice of supports was extended to other powder supports that would react with the byproduced acid. Overall, this facile method opens up new opportunities for controllable synthesis of supported nanoparticle catalysts in a green way.

Electrophoretic Fabrication of an Al–Co3O4 Reactive Nanocomposite Coating and Its Application in a Microignitor

Daixiong Zhang,Qing Xiang

Because of its high energy density, an Al–Co3O4 reactive nanocomposite (Al–Co3O4 RNC) has attracted vast attention. In this study, Al–Co3O4 RNC was successfully prepared as a coating by an electrophoretic deposition (EPD) method. An ethanol–acetylacetone (1:1 in volume) mixture containing 0.25 mM nitric acid was employed as a suitable dispersion medium for EPD. Differential scanning calorimetry revealed that the obtained Al–Co3O4 was a high-energy coating with a maximum heat release of 2638 J·g–1. Moreover, an attempt at assembling an electrophoretic Al–Co3O4 RNC coating onto an electrothermal copper bridge was also made. A successful ignition test indicated that this novel Al–Co3O4 RNC coating has great potential for application in the microignitor field.

Building Energetic Material from Novel Salix Leaf-like CuO and Nano-Al through Electrophoretic Deposition

Yanjun Yin,Xueming Li

In this study, an energetic material was prepared by depositing nano-Al on CuO arrays via electrophoretic deposition (EPD), which offers a feasible route for nano-Al integration. The morphology and structure of the CuO arrays and Al/CuO composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The CuO arrays were homogenously salix leaf-like structure with a width of ~150 to 200 nm. The energy density of Al/CuO composites was approximate to 1454.5 J/g by integrating the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) plot and the combustion performance was recorded by a high-speed camera. Moreover, the combustion flames were violent and the whole reaction process only lasted 72.2 ms, indicating that the energy of the Al/CuO nanothermite can be released effectively.

Effect of pressure and oxygen content on the ignition and combustion of Al–Mg alloy

Sun Mengxia,Liao Xueqin,Liu Jianzhong

Using Al–Mg alloy instead of pure aluminum can improve the agglomeration and combustion characteristics of composite propellants. In this experiment, the effects of oxygen concentration and pressure on the ignition and combustion performance of Al–Mg binary alloy (with a magnesium mass content of 20%) and Al–Mg alloy mixed with ammonium perchlorate (AP) were investigated using a laser ignition test bench. The thermogravimetric results showed that the melting of aluminum, magnesium and intermetallic phases in the alloy powder occurred under argon, producing four heat absorption peaks. Magnesium evaporates at about 580 °C. In air, only one endothermic peak was observed, with oxidation occurring at approximately 510 °C. During the oxidation process, the intermetallic phase decomposes. Laser ignition tests showed that the alloy mainly undergoes gas-phase combustion, exhibiting phenomena such as gas emission, particle fragmentation, and micro-explosions. The introduction of AP promotes ignition and combustion of the alloy, resulting in more intense gas-phase reactions. Both increased pressure and oxygen concentration will promote alloy combustion. There are two reaction zones in the particles during combustion. Filamentary solids were observed in the combustion products of the AP-AM samples, which were primarily the products of the reaction of magnesium with O and Cl.

Double-walled Al-based MOF with large microporous specific surface area for trace benzene adsorption

Hu Laigang,Wu Wenhao,Hu Min,Jiang Ling,Lin Daohui,Wu Jian,Yang Kun

Double-walled metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), synthesized using Zn and Co, are potential porous materials for trace benzene adsorption. Aluminum is with low-toxicity and abundance in nature, in comparison with Zn and Co. Therefore, a double-walled Al-based MOF, named as ZJU-520(Al), with large microporous specific surface area of 2235 m 2  g –1 , pore size distribution in the range of 9.26–12.99 Å and excellent chemical stability, was synthesized. ZJU-520(Al) is consisted by helical chain of AlO 6 clusters and 4,6-Di(4-carboxyphenyl)pyrimidine ligands. Trace benzene adsorption of ZJU-520(Al) is up to 5.98 mmol g –1 at 298 K and P/P 0  = 0.01. Adsorbed benzene molecules are trapped on two types of sites. One (site I) is near the AlO 6 clusters, another (site II) is near the N atom of ligands, using Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations. ZJU-520(Al) can effectively separate trace benzene from mixed vapor flow of benzene and cyclohexane, due to the adsorption affinity of benzene higher than that of cyclohexane. Therefore, ZJU-520(Al) is a potential adsorbent for trace benzene adsorption and benzene/cyclohexane separation.

Highly elastic Al/Si@TiO2 nanotubes fabricated from SBS/ALD strategy toward water purification applications

Wenlu Zhang,Mengzhe Bao,Mengyao Chen,Wenbin Li,Chong He,Weilin Xu

High-performance TiO 2 nanotube materials are highly demanded across various fields spanning thermal insulation, catalyst supports, filtration, and so on. However, the practical applications of hollow nanotubes are constrained by the low efficiency and uncontrollable structural properties. Herein, mass production of flexible and high catalytic hollow Al/Si@TiO 2 nanotubes were realized. Through solution blow spinning and atomic layer deposition processes, TiO 2 coated Al/Si@PAN core–shell nanofiber intermediate product was obtained with high efficiency. Hollow tubular structure of Al/Si@TiO 2 nanotubes with wall thicknesses among 150–350 nm was successfully replicated by sacrificing PAN core fibers template through a high-temperature pyrolysis process. Organic polysiloxane and polyalumina were employed as the internal supports to enhance the toughness and elasticity of the hollow Al/Si@TiO 2 nanotube products. Diameters of hollow Al/Si@TiO 2 nanotubes can be controlled ranging from 0.5-2.5 μm through adjusting the flow rate among 10–30 mL/h and air pressure among 0.2–0.4 MPa. Pyrolyzed hollow Al/Si@TiO 2 nanotubes exhibited remarkable elasticity with the compression strain of over 60 %. Hollow Al/Si@TiO 2 nanotubes demonstrated a methylene blue degradation efficiency of reached 61 % and outstanding reusability over multiple cycles, which held promising potential for utilization in high efficiency purification and remediation of water pollutants.

Freeze-Cast MIL-53(Al) Porous Materials with High Thermal Insulation and Flame Retardant Properties

Yuhao Che,Wenhui Li,Chunqi Wang,Xuemin Zhang,Zilei Guo,Aziz Bakhtiyarovich Ibragimov,Junkuo Gao

The development of materials with superior thermal insulation and flame retardancy is critical for industrial applications and daily life. Metal–organic framework (MOF)@poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) (MOF@PVA) aerogel composites have demonstrated remarkable thermal insulation and flame retardancy properties. In this work, MIL-53(Al) was directly mixed with PVA and formed by freeze-drying, and the influence of the pore structure on the thermal insulation and flame retardancy properties of the materials was investigated. The incorporated MIL-53(Al) nanoparticles introduced abundant micro- and mesopores, enhancing the complexity of the pore structure and improving the thermal insulation and flame retardancy properties of the aerogels. The directionally freeze-cast aerogel achieved a thermal conductivity of 0.040 W·mK–1, and maintained excellent thermal insulation ability even at 220 °C. Furthermore, the aerogel exhibited nonflammable and self-extinguishing characteristics. This environmentally friendly manufacturing method provides new ideas for the design of MOF-based composites, thereby expanding their application areas.

Immobilized lipase on MIL-53(Al)-AM11 with regulatable hydrophobic surface for flavor ester synthesis

Le Zhong,Yuxiao Feng,Zichen Wang,Tian Tian,Yali Bi,Jiandong Cui

Enzymatic synthesis of flavor esters is crucial for applications in food, beverage, and cosmetics industries. However, the poor activity and stability of free lipase hinder these reaction. Inspired by the concept of lipase interface activation, MIL-53(Al)-NH 2 was modified with alkyl acid anhydrides of varying chain lengths to tailor its hydrophobicity, and Candida Rugosa lipase (CRL) was subsequently immobilized on this surface to achieve efficient interface activation. The resulting CRL@MIL-53(Al)-AM11 exhibited 3.5 times higher activity than the unmodified CRL@MIL-53(Al)-NH 2 . Moreover, CRL@MIL-53(Al)-AM11 enabled one-step purification of crude CRL via selective adsorption. It also showed enhanced storage and thermal stability as well as higher resistance to protease degradation and denaturants than free CRL. CRL@MIL-53(Al)-AM11 retained 75 % of its initial activity after 30 min treatment at 55 °C, whereas the free CRL retained only 41 %. After 11 days of storage, CRL@MIL-53(Al)-AM11 maintained 70 % of its initial activity, in contrast to 36 % for the free lipase. Notably, CRL@MIL-53(Al)-AM11 achieved a 97 % conversion rate in the esterification synthesis of the flavoring substance (butyl butyrate) within 24 h and retained over 40 % conversion after five consecutive cycles. Therefore, this strategy offers a feasible approach for constructing high-performance immobilized lipases for flavor ester synthesis.

Improving the graphene distribution and mechanical properties of graphene/Al composites by aminopropyl triethoxysilane modification

Yubo Zhang,Junrui Huang,Bohan Wang,Jiajing Liu,Shuang Xie,Tingju Li,Tongmin Wang

Uniform distribution of low-dimensional nano-carbon materials (NCMs) for the optimal enhancement effects is always a major issue of metal matrix composites (MMCs). In this study, aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APS) was introduced to synthesize Al@GO powders in an optimized process, by which, the uniform coating of GO on Al powders and the chemical bonding between them were obtained with the GO content up to 1.0 %. After hot pressed sintering using these powders, the GO/Al composite has a nacre-like structure that Al grains are lamellar with reduced graphene oxide (RGO) on the grain boundaries. By the application of APS with the optimized process, the relative density of 1.0 % RGO/Al composite increased from 99.2 % (without APS) to 99.7 % (with APS), indicating that the aggregation of RGO and the concomitant hole defects were effectively eliminated. Therefore, the average tensile strength of the 0.5 % and 1.0 % RGO/Al composites reached 243.6 MPa and 292.4 MPa, respectively, which were 105.9 % and 147.4 % improved compared with those of pure Al. This work has provided a new strategy to fabricate NCMs/Al composite with uniform dispersion of NCMs.

Non-toxic Cu3BiS3 thin film solar cells with Al doped TiO2 as electron-transport layers

Fucheng Yu,Zengguang Huang,Jinghong Zhang,Sihua Zhong

Cu3BiS3 has been considered as an attractive photovoltaic material due to its suitable bandgap, excellent photoelectric properties, abundant component elements and low toxicity. However, most of the reported Cu3BiS3 solar cells contain toxic components in other functioning layers such as CdS in electron-transport layers (ETLs). In this study, the Cu3BiS3 thin films were prepared by spin-coating method. We find that the CuCl concentration in precursor solutions has influences on both the optical bandgap and grain size of the Cu3BiS3 thin films, thus affecting the performance of solar cells. The optimal CuCl concentration is 0.91 M. Besides, Al doped TiO2 (ATO) and MoOx films are employed as ETLs and hole-transport layers (HTLs) respectively, constructing a totally non-toxic thin film solar cell. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the ratio (RAl:Ti) of Al source (Aluminum nitrate nonahydrate) to Ti source [Titanium diisopropoxide bis(acetylacetonate)] in the precursor solution of ATO and the thickness of MoOx have significant influences on solar cells. Moderate Al doping in ATO, e.g. RAl:Ti=1:50, can produce oxygen vacancies and accelerate the interfacial charge transfer, thus resulting in the increased short-circuit current density and fill factor. With the optimized Cu3BiS3 absorber, ETL and HTL, improved cell performances are observed comparted to the spin-coated Cu3BiS3 counterparts with CdS as ETLs in literature.
