Confining nano zero-valent iron into zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 for efficient Cr(VI) removal

Qianyu Wang,Changchang Ma,Dandan Liu,Shushan Song,Ziheng Song,Weijie Zhang,Huarui Han,Jiasheng Zhu,Kai Wei,Sheng Feng

Confining nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) into porous materials could prevent its aggregation and passivation. In this study, we confined nZVI into the cavity of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) via sequential pre-adsorption ferric ion (Fe(III)) and NaBH 4 reduction processes. The optimized Cr(VI) removal rate of ZIF-8 confined nZVI (nZVI@ZIF-8) reached 1.2 × 10 −1 min −1 , 9.2- and 37.5-fold that of nZVI and ZIF-8, respectively. Interestingly, the removal rate constants of nZVI@ZIF-8 toward Cr(VI) still reached 9.6 × 10 −2 min −1 and 6.7 × 10 −2 min −1 with initial pH of 7.0 and 9.0, respectively, 13.0 (7.4 ×10 −4 min −1 ) and 23.9 times that of nZVI. More importantly, channels confinement significantly improved the reactive lifetime of nZVI for Cr(VI) removal. The electro-donating -NH 2 provided positive charge sites for CrO 4 2- or HCrO 4 - adsorption. Subsequently, the difference of Fermi level between nZVI and ZIF-8 drove electrons transfer from nZVI to ZIF-8 for surface Cr(VI) reduction. This study provides an avenue to enhance the performance of nZVI toward heavy metal ions removal by coupling surface adsorption and nano confinement.

Metal–Organic Framework MIL-101(Cr) for High-Performance Liquid Chromatographic Separation of Substituted Aromatics

Cheng-Xiong Yang,Xiu-Ping Yan

The diverse structures and pore topologies, accessible cages and tunnels, and high surface areas make metal–organic frameworks attractive as novel media in separation sciences. Here we report the slurry-packed MIL-101(Cr) column for high-performance liquid chromatographic separation of substituted aromatics. The MIL-101(Cr) packed column (5 cm long × 4.6 mm i.d.) offered high-resolution separation of ethylbenzene (EB) and xylene, dichlorobenzene and chlorotoluene isomers, and EB and styrene. The typical impurities of toluene and o-xylene in EB and styrene mixtures were also efficiently separated on the MIL-101(Cr) packed column. The column efficiencies for EB, m-dichlorobenzene, and m-chlorotoluene are 20000, 13000, and 10000 plates m–1, respectively. The relative standard deviation for five replicate separations of the substituted aromatics was 0.2–0.7%, 0.9–2.9%, 0.5–2.1%, and 0.6–2.7% for the retention time, peak area, peak height, and half peak width, respectively. The MIL-101(Cr) offered high affinity for the ortho-isomer, allowing fast and selective separation of the ortho-isomer from the other isomers within 3 min using dichloromethane as the mobile phase. The effects of the mobile phase composition, injected sample mass, and temperature were investigated. The separation of xylene, dichlorobenzene, and chlorotoluene on MIL-101(Cr) was controlled by entropy change, while the separation of EB and styrene on MIL-101(Cr) was governed by enthalpy change.

Dual-mode temperature sensing properties and systematic applications of Ce/Cr co-doped Y3Al5O12 phosphors

Jiahao Zha,Chongjun He,Fangzhou Chen,Xianhong Li,Jiayin Song,Chenguang Deng,Qian Li,Lijuan Liu,Mingjun Xia,Yuangang Lu

The fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique has emerged as a pivotal approach in non-contact optical thermometry, offering substantial application potential. In this study, Y 3 Al 5 O 12 (YAG) phosphors co-activated with Ce 3+ and Cr 3+ ions were successfully synthesized through a high-temperature solid-state reaction method. Spectroscopic analysis revealed efficient energy transfer between the dopant ions, manifesting as distinct luminescence intensity variations compared to their single-doped counterparts. Under 450 nm excitation, the system demonstrates prominently yellow-green emission from Ce 3+ ions and well-resolved red emission from Cr 3+ ions, ensuring excellent spectral discrimination. Capitalizing on the differential thermal response between the two luminescent centers, the developed system achieves remarkable temperature sensing performance. The FIR method yields a maximum relative sensitivity of 0.845 % K −1 , maintaining sensitivity above 0.6 % K −1 throughout the 340–580 K range, coupled with exceptional temperature resolution below 0.03 K. Furthermore, we have engineered a novel FIR thermometry system incorporating 3D-printed spectral modules and fiber-optic phosphor encapsulation. The integrated system demonstrates superior sensing capabilities, reaching sensitivity values of 1.23 % K −1 in Cr 3+ lifetime mode and 4.64 % K −1 in FIR mode. These results indicate that Ce/Cr co-doped YAG has exceptional potential in multimodal optical thermometry applications.

An intelligent ratiometric fluorescence platform assisted by machine learning for sensitive detection of Cr(VI)

Ruiqing Sun,Jing Yuan,Tong Zhou,Yujuan Xie,Qilong Zhan,Shiyi Lu,Haoran Fan,Yangyang Wen,Hongyan Li

Cr(VI), a highly toxic and carcinogenic contaminant, presents significant risks to ecological and human health due to its pervasive presence in food and environmental systems. Even minimal exposure can induce oxidative stress and genotoxicity, underscoring the urgent need for rapid, sensitive, and field-deployable analytical methods. In this study, we developed a ratiometric fluorescence probe based on a blue-emitting metal-organic framework (MOF) as the reference signal and a red-emitting CdTe quantum dot (QDs) as the responsive element. Upon Cr(VI) exposure, red fluorescence is quenched through inner filter effect (IFE) and electrostatic interaction (EI), while blue fluorescence remains unaltered, resulting in a visible color change from pink to blue. To achieve precise quantification, the ratiometric system was integrated with three representative ML algorithms—Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Regression (SVR), and BP Neural Network (BPNN). Smartphone-captured fluorescence images were processed by extracting RGB values to train and validate the ML models. Among them, the RF algorithm demonstrated superior performance, achieving an R 2 value of 0.9942, root mean square error of prediction of 3.5842, mean absolute error of prediction of 2.1893, and 93.31 % prediction accuracy. The proposed method achieved satisfactory recovery rates of 98.81–134.00 % and relative standard deviations below 4.32 % in real food and environmental samples. This study presents an intelligent, dual-mode strategy integrating ratiometric fluorescence sensing with machine learning for trace Cr(VI) detection. The approach offers high sensitivity, accuracy, and visual recognition, providing a generalizable platform for automated, on-site, and visualized analysis in complex food and environmental matrices.

Superhydrophilic Quaternized Electrospun Nanofibers for Fast and Efficient Removal of Cr(VI) from Metallurgical Wastewater

Hongxing He,Shunfei Li,Xintao Yang,Ying Xu,Siqing Ye,Haonan Dong,Mengye Yang,Ni Yang,Yi Zhang,Zhifeng Nie

Due to the low adsorption capacity, slow adsorption kinetics, and insufficient selectivity of conventional adsorbents in highly acidic environments, therefore, the removal of highly toxic Cr(VI) from industrial metallurgical wastewater remains a great challenge. Herein, a novel superhydrophilic quaternized nanofiber adsorbent was synthesized using electrospinning technology. The superhydrophilic nanofiber adsorbent facilitated water molecule movement during the adsorption process, which increased the system’s free energy and thus promoted the efficient and rapid selective removal of Cr(VI). The adsorbent was completely wetted within 0.06 s and reached a maximum adsorption capacity of 450.33 mg/g in a Cr(VI) solution with an initial concentration of 400 mg/L and equilibrated within 20 min. Adsorption experiments showed that the correlation coefficients of the pseudo-secondary kinetics and Langmuir model of the process were as high as R22 = 0.994 and RL2 = 0.971–0.993, respectively, suggesting that the adsorption process is mainly surface adsorption driven by chemisorption. Moreover, the adsorption mechanism by Zeta potential analysis and XPS and DFT simulations revealed that the selective adsorption for Cr(VI) is the synergistic action of ion exchange and coordination by electrostatic attraction. In addition, the dynamic column adsorption test demonstrated that the adsorbent could adsorb 6000 times its own mass of Cr(VI) ions in metallurgical wastewater, the recovery of Cr(VI) by nanofibers could still reach 89.7% after five cycles, and the removal efficiency was as high as 95.64% in real metallurgical wastewater, which highlighted the potential of its practical application.

Surface ion-imprinted silica clay for adsorption of chromium(III) ions from aqueous with high selectivity

Junwen Li,He Li,Qiao-e Wang,Haiming Cheng

ABSTRACT A novel adsorbent ion-imprinted polymer–silica clay (IIP@SC) was prepared via surface ion imprinting technology by using silica clay (SC) as the support matrix and methacrylic acid as the ionic imprinting monomer. The adsorbent was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The prepared IIP@SC was applied for recovery of Cr(III) ions from aqueous solution. The selectivity properties of IIP@SC are evaluated. The results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity reached 157.98 mg/g in 30 min when the initial concentration of metal ions was 100 mg/L at pH 6.0. Adsorption kinetic and adsorption equilibrium studies demonstrated that the experimental data fitted well with the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir isotherm model. Competitive adsorption study showed that the prepared IIP@SC exhibits an efficient selectivity for Cr(III) ions. The prepared IIP@SC adsorbent can be a promising adsorbents for Cr(III) recovery from aqueous solutions with high selectivity.

Highly selective PAN@MOFs composite nanofiber for removal of C4F7N/CO2 harmful decomposition products

Song Xiao,Menglei Jin,Junyi Chen,Peng Wu,Ju Tang,Yi Luo,Yi Li

Perfluoroisobutyronitrile (C 4 F 7 N) mixed with CO 2 has emerged as a promising eco-friendly alternative to sulfur hexafluoride (SF 6 ) in gas-insulated equipment (GIE). However, thermal or discharge faults in GIE inevitably lead to the generation of harmful decomposition by-products, necessitating their prompt removal to safeguard equipment operation and personnel safety. In this study, we propose a nanofiber composite material comprising polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as the base and multi-metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as the primary adsorbent material for removing typical decomposition components of C 4 F 7 N/CO 2 gas mixture. Utilizing grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we elucidate the selective adsorption mechanisms. Experimental results show that PAN@HKUST-1(Cu) exhibits superior adsorption efficiency for fluorocarbon gases compared to PAN@MIL-101(Cr), while the latter demonstrates better performance for nitrile gases. The PAN@HKUST-1(Cu)/MIL-101(Cr) composite adsorbent effectively removes eight typical harmful decomposition products while minimally affecting C 4 F 7 N. Our findings suggest that PAN@HKUST-1(Cu)/MIL-101(Cr) nanofiber film holds promise as an adsorbent for C 4 F 7 N/CO 2 based GIE.

An outer membrane photosensitized Geobacter sulfurreducens-CdS biohybrid for redox transformation of Cr(VI) and tetracycline

Xiaofeng Yi,Shurui Liu,Mingyu Luo,Qingbiao Li,Yuanpeng Wang

Microbe-photocatalyst biohybrids, integrating the optimal attributes of whole-cell catalysts and nanometer photocatalysts, have emerged as a promising strategy for environment-associated applications. However, few such biohybrids have been tested for complex pollution systems. Herein, we constructed an outer membrane photosensitized Geobacter sulfurreducens ( G. sulfurreducens )-CdS biohybrid, which enabled to generate stronger photocurrent in response to irradiation and meanwhile achieved an significant promotion for the redox transformation of Cr(VI) and tetracycline compared with that of bare G. sulfurreducens or CdS counterparts. Further analysis revealed that the outer membrane played a significant role in photoelectron transfer. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) tests demonstrated that CdS enhanced the catalytic activity of C-type cytochromes on the outer membrane under irradiation, resulting in the increase of electron-hole pairs separation efficiency. The possible degradation pathway of tetracycline was proposed based on determined intermediates, whose toxicities were well evaluated. Importantly, the toxicity of the final detected intermediates was apparently decreased. Overall, this work aims to explore the working mechanisms of the novel G. sulfurreducens -CdS biohybrid system and opens up a new avenue to purifying combined wastewater by microbe-photocatalyst biohybrids.

Ultrasensitive and Ultraselective Impedimetric Detection of Cr(VI) Using Crown Ethers as High-Affinity Targeting Receptors

Juan Wei,Zheng Guo,Xing Chen,Dong-Dong Han,Xiang-Ke Wang,Xing-Jiu Huang

Detection of Cr(VI) by electrochemical methods generally focuses on noble-metal-modified electrodes in strong acid solution using voltammetric techniques. In this work, we report a new strategy to detect Cr(VI) as HCrO4– at pH 5.0 in drinking water using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The strategy is based on the high-affinity and specific binding of crown ethers (i.e., azacrown) to HCrO4–, which forms sandwich complexes between them via hydrogen bonds and moiety interactions with K+ captured by azacrown on its self-assembled Au electrode surface. This then blocks the access of redox probes (Fe(CN)63–/4–) to the self-assembled Au electrode, further resulting in an increase in the electron transfer resistance. This method offers a detection limit of 0.0014 ppb Cr(VI) with a sensitivity of 4575.28 kΩ [log c (ppb)]−1 over the linear range of 1–100 ppb (R2 = 0.994) at pH 5.0. In addition, the azacrown self-assembled Au electrode has good selectivity for Cr(VI) with good stability and low interferences. This approach can be performed on spiked Cr(VI) as well as real samples. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of electrochemical impedimetric sensing that allows ultrasensitive and ultraselective detection of Cr(VI).

Magnetic algae-derived FeS0.66@GA-BC0.33 Composite for Cr(VI) Removal Optimized by Response Surface Methodology

Abdelazeem S. Eltaweil,Nouf Al Harby,Mervette El Batouti,GopiKrishna Pasam,Mazin Al Kitani,Eman M. Abd El-Monaem

In this study, the adsorption capability of green algae-derived biochar was enhanced by integrating with iron sulfide, creating the FeS 0.66 @GA-BC 0.33 composite. The magnetic FeS 0.66 @GA-BC 0.33 composite exhibited excellent adsorption performance toward Cr(VI) with a maximal adsorption capacity of 423.73 mg/g. Surprisingly, the FeS 0.66 @GA-BC 0.33 composite showed fast adsorption, with an equilibrium time of 60 minutes. Furthermore, batch experiments showed that the maximum removal efficiency of Cr(VI) by FeS 0.66 @GA-BC 0.33 was 92.39% at pH 3, 20 °C, and an adsorbent dose of 0.01 g. The kinetic analysis indicated that the pseudo-second-order model best described the adsorption process, while the isotherm results showed good agreement with both the Langmuir and Freundlich models. A combination of response surface methodology (RSM) and Box–Behnken design (BBD) was used to optimize the adsorption of Cr(VI) onto FeS 0.66 @GA-BC 0.33 . The independent variables were adsorbent dose (5–30 mg), initial Cr(VI) concentration (50–300 mg/L), and contact time (1–120 min). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that the maximum removal efficiency reached 99.09% at an adsorbent dose of 17.5 mg, an initial Cr(VI) concentration of 50 mg/L, and a contact time of 120 min. The Cr(VI) adsorption mechanism was proposed based on the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra of fresh and used FeS 0.66 @GA-BC 0.33 composites, suggesting the governing reduction reaction, electrostatic interaction, and coordination bond pathways on the adsorption of Cr(VI).

Cr-doped Ni-Cu/Ni(OH)2 coating supported on nickel foam for efficient hydrogen evolution

Hu Yanan,Yang Dawei,Li Qiaoling,Yu Chengcheng

Herein, a Cr-doped Ni-Cu/(NiOH) 2 coating supported on nickel foam (Ni-Cu-Cr/NF) was fabricated via a facile one-step electrodeposition strategy and employed as an efficient electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media. In 1 M NaOH, Ni–Cu–Cr/NF requires an overpotential of 30 mV to reach a current density of − 10 mA cm⁻ 2 and exhibits a Tafel slope of 55 mV dec⁻ 1 . These electrochemical results are associated with the combined effects of the multicomponent composition and an increased electrochemically active surface area (ECSA). The ECSA of Ni–Cu–Cr/NF is approximately 23.6 times that of Ni–Cu/NF. In addition, the catalyst maintains stable operation for 60 h during continuous electrolysis. This work presents a simple preparation method for the novel Ni-Cu-Cr/NF catalyst and systematically investigates the impact of Cr doping on enhancing catalytic performance, providing an effective strategy for the development of nickel-based alloy electrocatalysts. Cr Deposition and Poisoning of BaCo0.8(Zr0.8Y0.2)0.2O3-δ Air Electrode of Protonic Ceramic Fuel Cells

Lang Tang,Zhongwei Yue,Zihao Chen,Chu Chen,Haichao Yao,Bo Wang,Huihong Tang,Yi-Bing Cheng,Meiting Guo,San Ping Jiang

Chromium-forming metallic interconnectors (ICs) are generally used to assemble protonic ceramic fuel cell stacks (PCFCs). Thus, Cr poisoning is a potential threat to the performance and stability of PCFCs. The effects of Cr deposit and poisoning on the performance and stability of a typical BaCo0.8(Zr0.8Y0.2)0.2O3-δ(BCZY) air electrode after polarization with a current density of 0.2 A cm−2for 50 h are investigated. It is found that the BCZY and Cr2O3powder are able to react even at 400 °C. In addition, Cr poisoning affects the chemical stability of BCZY. The humidification of air accelerates the Cr deposition and poisoning of BCZY by promoting the surface segregation of Ba and Cr evaporation from IC, and the main phase of the surface deposit is BaCrO4. When the air humidity increases from 3% to 50%, the deposit layer depth increases from 0.949 μm to 2.870 μm. For the fuel cell exposed to air with a relative humidity of 3% and 50%, the polarization resistance (Rp) increases by 19.9% and 53.3%, while the ohmic resistance (RΩ) increases by 3.5% and 17.1%, respectively. This study lays the foundation for further design of Cr-tolerant air electrodes and the selection of working conditions.
