Efficient accumulation and on-demand intracellular drug release in the desired site are a crucial issue in developing ideal drug delivery systems (DDSs). Glutathione (GSH)/pH dual-bioresponsive degradable Nanosponges were developed based on β-CD-appended hyper-cross-linked polymer by one-pot polymerization of acryloyl-6- ethylenediamine-6-deoxy-β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD-NH-ACy), acrylic acid (AA) and N , N -bis(acryloyl)- cystamine (BACy) as cross-linker to deliver doxorubcin (DOX) and investigated for GSH/pH triggered DOX release, in which the massive carboxyl and amino groups, and disulfide bonds were used as pH and GSH bioresponsive fragments, respectively. In the proposed DDSs, DOX was readily incorporated into the three dimensional networks of the Nanosponges either as inclusion complexes or as non-inclusion complexes, with a high drug loading capacity of 22.6%. In vitro release studies suggested that the Nanosponges exhibited GSH/pH triggered disintegration and drug release performance, in which DOX release was significantly accelerated in acidic (pH5.0) and cytosolic reduction (10 mM GSH) conditions, with ~77.0% of DOX release. The morphology changes of DOX@Nanosponges in releasing media (pH5.0, 10 mM GSH) were further studied by TEM . Confocal microscopy observation demonstrated that DOX was delivered and released into cytoplasm and nucleus of A549 cells in 7 h incubation with DOX@Nanosponges. MTT assays manifested that the Nanosponges exhibited low cytotoxicity up to a concentration of 1000 μg/mL and DOX@Nanosponges had high anti-tumor activity. These findings demonstrated that the dual-bioresponsive Nanosponges may function as a promising platform for targeted delivery and intracellular drug controlled release in tumor therapy.

Kesterite Cu 2 Zn 1- x Cd x Sn(S,Se) 4 (CZCTSSe) alloy thin films were fabricated by the water-based solution approach. The influence of Cd doping on the morphology, phase structure, element valence states, optical, electrical, and device performance were comprehensively examined. Cd was clearly alloyed into the Cu 2 ZnSn(S,Se) 4 (CZTSSe) absorber layer to form the CZCTSSe compound. By controlling the relative Cd content, band gap values ( E g ) of the CZCTSSe thin films were engineered between 1.10 eV and 1.21 eV. In addition, doping with Cd led to the enhancement of grain growth as well as improvement of the conductivity and photoelectric property of the absorber layer. In particular, the CZCTSSe ( x = 0.4) absorber layer exhibited a pure phase, larger grain size, compact and uniform topography, suitable band gap, Cu-poor and (Cd+Zn)-rich composition, higher conductivity and better photoelectric response. Power conversion efficiency (PCE) is improved from 4.37% of the CZCTSSe ( x = 0.0) device to 5.16% of CZCTSSe ( x = 0.4) device, and the increases of short-circuit current ( J sc ) achieved to 8.94 mA/cm 2 . The encouraging results suggest that doping of Cd is an effective way to improve CZTSSe film properties and promote device efficiency.

In this study, a novel alkali-modified biochar prepared from ginkgo leaves was produced by simply one-step pyrolysis and was investigated as an adsorbent for the removal of Pb, Cd, and Cu from aqueous solutions. After modified by alkali, ginkgo leaves biochar exhibited abundant surface functional groups and large porosity, resulting in high adsorption capacities for Pb (589.32 mg·g −1 ), Cd (563.55 mg·g −1 ), and Cu (81.7 mg·g −1 ). Simulation results showed that pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model were better fitted to analyze the heavy metals adsorption process by alkali-BC, indicating that multilayer adsorption was the main reason for heavy metals removal. Besides, effect of pH and coexisting cations on adsorption of Pb, Cd, and Cu by alkali-BC was studied. Moreover, competitive adsorption of the three heavy metal ions by alkali-BC in binary system was also explored. Finally, the removal mechanism of Pb, Cd, and Cu in aqueous solution was analyzed and summarized. Due to the good performance in a wider pH range and high absorption capacity, alkali-BC would be an efficient adsorbent for heavy metals in real environmental samples.

Chitosan-pectin gel beads (CPBs) were synthesized via a facile and green method and applied to remove heavy metals from aqueous solution. The structural characteristics of CPBs were investigated by SEM and FTIR, the mechanical strength of CPBs was measured by Texture Analyzer and the stability of CPBs was evaluated in acidic solution. To study the adsorption characteristics, the effect of pH, contact time, initial heavy metals concentration, temperature, adsorption mechanism and regeneration were systematically investigated. The adsorption kinetics fitted well pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption isotherms were well described by Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities of Cu(II), Cd(II), Hg(II) and Pb(II) were 169.4, 177.6, 208.5 and 266.5 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption-desorption experiments revealed that the CPBs exhibited a great reusability. Thus, the synthesized CPBs in this study had the potential to be utilized as an environment-friendly and green adsorbent for the removal of heavy metals.

Recently, the developments of MOFs and their applications on heavy metal removal have attracted much attention. In this paper, we focused on the influence of co-existing ions on the adsorbability of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) modified ZIF-8 in a multi-metal system (Cd(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), and Cr(VI)). It was found that the adsorption of Cd(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), and Cr(VI) on the ZIF-8-EGCG fitted well with the pseudo second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption selectivity of ZIF-8-EGCG in the mixed metal solution followed the order of Cu(II) ≫ Cr(VI) > Cd(II) > Ni(II). Besides, Cu(II) was the most attractive substance with a maximum capacity of 232.97 mg·g −1 . Copper also disturbed the adsorption of Cd(II) and Ni(II) and contributed the most to the Cr(VI) removal. The natural anions (e.g., Cl − , NO 3 – , AsO 2 − , SO 4 2− ) significantly impeded Cr(VI) adsorption, while low concentrations of natural cations (e.g., K + , Na + , Ca 2+ , and Mg 2+ ) facilitated the adsorption of Cd(II), Cu(II) and Ni(II).

Rapid bacteria killing and tissue repair are critical for the fast healing of bacteria-infected wounds, especially under poor sanitation without antibiotics. Herein, we prepared a novel xerogel constructed by thioether as a main chain and embedded by Ag nanoparticles (NPs) and ZnO NPs decorated by N-doped carbon dots (N-CD@ZnO). This hybrid xerogel not only has good mechanical properties without swelling but also has the ability to capture bacteria rapidly by the disulfide group through electrostatic interaction. Under 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation for 15 min, this hybrid xerogel killed 99.9% Escherichia coli and 99.85% Staphylococcus aureus by the synergistic action of released Ag + and reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by N-CD@ZnO using up-conversion technology (N-CD reduces the biotoxicity of ZnO and changes its photocatalytic response region from the 368 nm ultraviolet (UV) region to the 808 nm NIR region). In addition, the biotoxicity of Ag + is limited by the Ag-S covalent bond, which ensures good biocompatibility for the xerogel. Finally, in wound repair experiments in vivo , this xerogel is able to completely repair the wound within 10 days. This work will open up a new avenue for xerogel antibacterial materials.

Nitrogen/phosphorus enriched biochars with enhanced porosity were prepared through a one-step pyrolysis of bamboo sawdust activated by guanidine phosphate (GP). The thermal decomposition of GP released alkaline gas and hydrogen proton to create more micropores in biochar matrix which were extended to be mesopores further. Nitrogenous/phosphorous moieties of GP were introduced into biochars efficiently via cross-linking with the carbon skeleton. GP-activated biochar pyrolyzed at 450 °C exhibited enriched surface functional groups (11.3 at.% for N, 4.1 at.% for P), resulting in high sorption capacities for aquatic Pb(II) (166.2 mg/g), Cu(II) (81.7 mg/g), and Cd(II) (60.3 mg/g). Pb(II) was passivated fast with the formation of minerals including Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH and Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 Cl. Cu(II) was strongly coordinated with the N-containing species especially pyridinic N. Cd(II) was also captured efficiently due to the chemical complexation, cation exchange and cation-π bonds. GP-activated biochars could be well-recycling used to capture these heavy metals. Regarding these, the activation of biomass residuals could be an efficient approach to functionalize the surface of biochars with enhanced porosity, which is great benefiting for the immobilization of heavy metals from contaminated water.

A novel electrochemical sensor based on ion imprinted polymers and gold nanoparticles was fabricated for selective and sensitive determination of Cd (II) ion in real samples. Ion imprinted polymers synthesized by conventional precipitation polymerization methods may have the problem in embedding the imprinting sites too deeply. Thereby, the surface imprinting technology by attaching the imprinted material on the surface of the silicon sphere was used to increase the quantity of the imprinting site, and enhances the adsorption performance of the imprinted material. Moreover, thiosemicarbamide functionalized chitosan and methacrylic acid were selected as functional monomers to synthesize the ion imprinted polymers, which enhanced the coordination ability of Cd (II) ions. Also, the electrochemical performance of the electrochemical sensor was well improved by doping gold nanoparticles in the polymer. The morphologies of the obtained imprinted composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy. The electrochemical behavior of the imprinted polymers was characterized by CV, DPV and EIS. As a result, the fabricated sensor showed a good selectivity toward target Cd (II) ions. Under optimized experimental conditions, the electrochemical sensor showed a good linear relationship in the range of 10 –9 to 10 –4 mol/L with a low limit detection of 1.43 × 10 –10 mol/L. The improved sensor not only possesses good selectivity and high sensitivity, but also exhibits excellent repeatability and stability. Finally, the proposed electrochemical sensor was successfully applied to the determination of trace Cd (II) ions in real samples.

The exploitation of magnetic recyclable and effective degradation photocatalysts with wide-pH-range response was essential to the practical application in the photo-Fenton process. In this study, Cd/CdS coupling with CuO/Fe 2 O 3 /CuFe 2 O 4 (CF) was employed to prepare an efficient and recyclable photocatalyst Cd/CdS-CuO/Fe 2 O 3 /CuFe 2 O 4 (CCCF). The obtained CCCF was utilized to activate H 2 O 2 for the photo-Fenton degradation of tetracycline after verifying optical properties and energy band structures. The photo-Fenton degradation performance of CCCF on tetracycline was researched in the effects of photocatalyst concentration, initial pH and H 2 O 2 volume. The photo-Fenton removal efficiency of CCCF+H 2 O 2 was capable of achieving 82.43 % under the optimal reaction condition, which was apparently higher than that of Cd/CdS and CF. The enhanced degradation efficiency could be owned to the effective carriers separation thanks to the p-n heterojunction . The development of such photocatalysts offers a new approach to degrading organic pollutants from industrial wastewater , making it a valuable tool for contaminants degradation.

As a toxic heavy metal, cadmium (Cd) easily enters into rice while rice grains greatly contribute to the dietary Cd intake in the populations consuming rice as a staple food . The availability of Cd in paddy soil determines the accumulation of grain Cd. Soil drainage leads to the remobilization of Cd, increasing bioavailability of Cd. In contrast, soil flooding results in little contribution of soil Cd to grain Cd, which is generally attributed to sulfate reduction induced by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in paddy soils. However, effects of SRB cultured from the paddy soil on the solubility and redox behavior of Cd have been seldom investigated before. Here, we used SRB enrichment cultures to investigate the temporal dynamics of Cd 2+ . The results showed that SRB enrichment cultures efficiently reduced solution redox potential (Eh) to less than −100 mV and gradually increased pH to neutral, demonstrating their ability to create a good anaerobic environment. The solubility of Cd obviously decreased in the anaerobic phase and Cd 2+ was transformed into poorly dissolved CdS near the SRB cell wall edge. The addition of Zn 2+ and/or Fe 2+ further improved the decrease in Cd solubility and facilitated the formation of polymetallic sulfides as a consequence of promoting the production of S 0 and dissolved sulfides (S 2− /HS − ) and the transformation of S 0 into S 2− /HS − . Little of Cd was detected in the media upon reoxidation, which was probably due to the high pH and the interaction between CdS and ZnS/FeS. Conclusively, these results demonstrate the detailed dynamic processes that explain the essential role of SRB in regulating the redox dynamics of chalcophile heavy metals and their bioavailability in paddy soils.

Cadmium (Cd), a harmful heavy metal that has no biological purpose, can harm healthy fetal and child development. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the most abundant polyphenol in tea, has been shown to increase cell viability under Cd exposure and ameliorate Cd-induced kidney injury in adult male rats. Using theCaenorhabditis elegans(C. elegans) model, we demonstrated that EGCG mitigated Cd-induced body size developmental toxicity through a mechanism that did not involve chelation with EGCG and was not associated with Cd accumulation and efflux. Our research indicated that the beneficial effects of EGCG on Cd-induced body size developmental toxicity were associated with the mitigation of endoplasmic reticulum stress. Furthermore, our observations indicate that EGCG reduced Cd-induced developmental toxicity inC. elegansvia the PEK-1/eIF-2α/ATF-4 pathway. Our results provide important evidence for the potential benefits of consuming tea as a detoxification agent. Keywords:tea;EGCG;cadmium;Caenorhabditis elegans;developmental toxicity;endoplasmic reticulum stress

Environmental pollution is complex, and co-exposure can accurately reflect the true environmental conditions that are important for assessment of human health. Cadmium (Cd) is a widespread toxicant that can cause acute kidney injury (AKI), while its combined effect with 2,2′,4,4′-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) is not fully understood. Thus, we used an in vivo model where C57BL/6J mice were treated with low dietary intake of Cd (5 mg/kg/day) and/or BDE-47 (1 mg/kg/day) for 28 days to examine AKI, and in vitro experiments to investigate the possible mechanism. Results showed that Cd or BDE-47 caused pathological kidney damage, accompanied by elevated urea nitrogen (BUN) and urinary creatinine, as well as increased interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and reduced IL-10 in kidney tissues. In vitro Cd or BDE-47 exposure decreased cell viability and induced cell swelling and blebbing of human embryonic kidney 293 (HEK-293) and renal tubular epithelial cell lines (HKCs), and changes in co-exposure was larger than that in Cd and BDE-47 treatment. Oxidative stress indicators of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were elevated, while the antioxidant superoxide dismutase (SOD) was decreased. Necrosis occurred with increased lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release and propidium iodide (PI) staining, which was attenuated by the ROS scavenger N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC). Furthermore, necroptotic genes of receptor-interacting protein kinase-3 (RIPK3), classical mixed lineage kinase domain-like protein-dependent (MLKL), IL-1β and TNF-α were up-regulated, whereas RIPK1 was down-regulated, which was attenuated by the RIPK3 inhibitor GSK872. These findings demonstrate that Cd or BDE-47 alone produces kidney toxicities, and co-exposure poses an additive effect, resulting in AKI via inducing oxidative stress and regulating RIPK3-dependent necroptosis, which offers a further mechanistic understanding for kidney damage, and the combined effect of environmental pollutants should be noticed.
