Carbon dots (CDs), known for their notable fluorescence, cost-effectiveness, and eco-friendliness, hold substantial promise in versatile applications. However, existing one-pot strategies using biomass precursors predominantly yield blue-green emissive CDs, and achieving multicolor emission (especially red) remains challenging. In this work, four distinct fluorescent CDs (blue, green, yellow, and red) were synthesized via a one-pot solvothermal method using a synergistic natural/synthetic precursor system (Radix Saposhnikoviae and p-phenylenediamine). Systematic characterization revealed that the emission red shift (450 nm to 626 nm) is primarily governed by increased carbonization degree, as evidenced by the gradual enhancement of graphitic nitrogen content and sp2 domain ordering. The synthetic precursor (p-phenylenediamine) drives carbon core growth and graphitization, while the natural biomass (Radix Saposhnikoviae) facilitates multi-scale carbonization control, enabling color diversification in a single pot. By integrating the four CDs with silicone resin on a 395 nm UV chip, we fabricated a warm white LED with high-quality white light with CIE chromatic coordinates (0.36, 0.35) and correlated color temperature 4428 K, demonstrating their practical potential in solid-state lighting.

1T-phase molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) is considered to be one of the most promising candidates to substitute noble metals in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Fabricating single layer 1T-phase MoS2 with abundant sulfur vacancies as well as good stability to further enhance catalytic performance remains a challenge. Herein, we develop an efficient in situ TMA cation ((CH3)4N+) intercalation method to produce 1T-phase MoS2. The obtained MoS2 nanosheets comprise about 81% 1T-phase and abundant sulfur vacancies (>12%), as verified by aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC-HAADF-STEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS), etc. In addition, the surface of as-prepared ST-MoS2 is negatively charged, making it very stable in aqueous solution. The as-prepared ST-MoS2 exhibits excellent electrochemical HER performance with a low over-potential and a small Tafel slope as well as superior cycling stability. Furthermore, it is an excellent co-catalyst when coupled with CdS nanowires to form a CdS/ST-MoS2 heterojunction photocatalyst for the HER under visible light irradiation. It achieves a maximum H2 production rate and apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of approximately 1187 μmol mg−1 h−1 and 73.4%, respectively, which are significantly higher than those of reported CdS/MoS2 photocatalysts.

Low solar-to-fuel conversion in conventional semiconductor-based photocatalysts limits their commercial applications. Searching for highly efficient cost-effective co-catalysts is desirable for the development of artificial photosynthesis systems. In this work, we report a simple yet efficient electrostatic self-assembly process to synthesize one-dimensional Co 4 N-WN x -CdS composites for visible light-driven hydrogen evolution in pure water. Biphasic transition metal nitrides Co 4 N-WN x with high conductivity and enriched active sites leads to multi-level electrons transfer and lower over-potential for hydrogen production. Co 4 N-WN x -CdS composite, with optimized wt%, exhibits the highest rate of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (14.42 mmol g −1 h −1 ) under vacuum condition. This rate is ~ 8 times higher than that of the Pt-CdS composite (1.78 mmol g −1 h −1 ).

A novel visible light-driven photocatalyst (represented as Mn-CdS/ZCISe/CIS/TiO2) for the passivation of E. coli was prepared with TiO2 nanowires as support and using CuInS2 (CIS) and ZnCuInSe (ZCISe) quantum dots (QDs), as well as Mn-doped CdS (Mn-CdS) nanoparticles (NPs) as sensitizers. The use of CIS and ZCISe QDs and Mn-CdS NPs extends the light harvest region to visible light. The photoelectric conversion efficiency was consequently improved, with a photocurrent density of 12.5 mA cm−2, about 60 times that of pure TiO2 nanowires. The germicidal efficiency of the photocatalyst was assessed by passivation of E. coli, 96% bacteria in 50 ml 105 colony forming units (CFU) ml−1 solution were killed within 50 min. Besides the high efficiency, the composite has good stability and satisfactory recycling performance. The antibiotic mechanism was also performed by using photoluminescence and a scavenging agent of different active matter, revealing that the photo-generated holes play a major role in the sterilization process.

Metallic nanostars have tunable plasmon resonances and high photocatalytic activities; however, controlling the number and length uniformity of branches for the colloidal nanostars is still a challenge. Herein, we report a successful growth of triangular nanostars of an AuCu alloy by tuning the atomic ratio of Cu (γCu = 0.36). The growth kinetics is dominated by the γCu, and the evolution from triangular to pentacle nanostars is observed. The triangle AuCu nanostars have a uniform branch length and therefore exhibit strong strength of surface plasmon resonance in the near-infrared region. Furthermore, we demonstrate plasmon-enhanced photocatalytic performance by overgrowing CdS nanocrystals onto the triangle AuCu nanostars. The hydrogen production rate of the AuCu@CdS heterostars reaches 607 μmol g−1 h−1 under light irradiation (λ > 420 nm), which is 2.94 times the sum of that of the pure CdS nanoparticles and the triangular AuCu nanostars. These observations provide an approach to control the morphology of plasmonic nanoantennas and may find the applications ranging from bio-sensor to photocatalysis.

4-Nitrophenol (4-NP) is a priority pollutant in water and is both carcinogenic and genotoxic to humans and wildlife even at very low concentrations. Thus, we herein fabricated a novel molecularly imprinted core-shell nanohybrid as a ratiometric fluorescent sensor for the highly sensitive and selective detection of 4-NP. This sensor was functioned by the transfer of fluorescence resonance energy between photoluminescent carbon dots (CDs) and 4-NP. This sensor was synthesized by linking organosilane-functionalized CDs to silica-coated CdSe quantum dots (CdSe@SiO 2 ) via Si–O bonds. The nanohybrids were further modified by anchoring a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) layer on the ratiometric fluorescent sensor through a facile sol–gel polymerization method. The morphology, chemical structure, and optical properties of the resulting molecularly imprinted dual-emission fluorescent probe were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopic analysis. The probe was then applied in the detection of 4-NP and exhibited good linearity between 0.051 and 13.7 μg/mL, in addition to a low detection limit of 0.026 μg/mL. Furthermore, the simplicity, reliability, high selectivity, and high sensitivity of the developed sensor demonstrate that the combination of MIPs and ratiometric fluorescence allows the preparation of excellent fluorescent sensors for the detection of trace or ultra-trace analytes.

Solar-to-chemical energy conversion via heterogeneous photocatalysis is one of the effective approaches to tackle the growing environmental and energy challenges. Homogeneously dispersed silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and cadmium sulfide nanoparticles (CdS NPs) with average particle size not>20 nm were fabricated on the surface of titanium dioxide nanotubes (TNTs) (Ag/CdS/TNTs) with the help of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS). Herein, more surface active sites are created on the surface of nanocomposites. The experimental results demonstrate that the photocurrent intensity of the nanocomposites obviously increased, which effectively improves the photocatalytic activity. The results of photocatalytic experiments indicated that using triethanolamine (TEOA) and acetonitrile (MeCN) as sacrificial agents, the nanocomposites afford the CO yield from CO 2 (1455.6 μmol‧g −1 ‧h −1 ). Besides, Ag/CdS/TNTs nanocomposites displayed the H 2 evolution rate of 3700.57 μmol‧g −1 ‧h −1 , which was twice as much as pure TiO 2 NPs. The increase in the photocatalytic ability of the nanocomposites is basically attributed to the three materials formation S-scheme heterojunction which reduce the recombination probability of the photo-induced electrons and holes and thus enhances the photocatalytic activitys. Ultimately, a photocatalytic reaction mechanism is proposed for Ag/CdS/TNTs nanocomposites in the reduction of CO 2 .

The abuse of pesticides has introduced a large number of residues in soil and drinking water, which can then enter the food chain and the human body. Monitoring pesticide residues and developing simple and fast detection systems for pesticide residues is urgently needed. In this study, we presented one-pot prepared CdS fluorescent quantum dots (QDs) and explored their sensing application for organic pesticides. The CdS QDs can sensitively and selectively detect three different pesticides, dichlorvos (DDVP), paraquat, and glufosinate-ammonium, through different fluorescence responses. Paraquat can effectively quench the fluorescence of the QDs and DDVP can cause remarkable fluorescent enhancement. Glufosinate-ammonium can induce both 150 nm fluorescent blueshifting and 30-fold fluorescent enhancement. The probe exhibited low detection limits for the three pesticides: 1.44 μM for paraquat, 0.23 mM for DDVP, and 49.8 μM for glufosinate-ammonium. Furthermore, based on the results, we utilized the powerful functions of smartphones to establish a concentration-gray value standard curve through RGB values and gray values to realize the qualitative detection and quantitative analysis of DDVP. It is believed that this work presents a new platform for the simultaneous detection of multiple pesticides using a single QDs probe. The present on-site method using a smartphone is of great potential for water monitoring in rural areas.

Integrating selective organic transformation and hydrogen (H 2 ) evolution in one photoredox reaction system is one of the most sustainable and promising approaches to efficiently produce solar fuels and chemicals by simultaneously utilizing photogenerated electrons and holes. Herein, through the cation-exchange engineering method, the nanoleaf-like Pd/CdS composites are gingerly fabricated for visible-light-driven receptor-free dehydrogenation of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (THIQ) to 3,4-dihydroisoquinoline (DHIQ) and H 2 under ambient conditions. The optimized electronic structure endows Pd/CdS with a narrow band gap and suitable energy band positions, thus facilitating the light harvesting as well as the separation and transfer of photoexcited charge carriers. Consequently, the Pd/CdS exhibits significantly improved photoredox activity compared to bare CdS . In-situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy track the progression of reaction intermediates during such a dual-functional photoredox-catalyzed system, revealing that the carbon-centered radical is the key reaction intermediate in this reaction process. It is anticipated that this work would guide the rational utilization of CdS-based materials to enable simultaneous photochemical coupling of organic transformation and H 2 evolution.

The PCN/CdS/CdIn 2 S 4 composites exhibit excellent photocatalytic performance for H 2 evolution, H 2 O 2 production and dye degradation. • Spontaneous interfacial band bending drives a dual Z-scheme pathway to preserve highly active photogenerated charge carriers. • The superoxide radicals (.•O 2 − ) is the primary species for both continuous H 2 O 2 generation and rapid pollutant decomposition. Addressing the escalating global energy and environmental crises demands efficient, sustainable, and robust technologies. In this study, a ternary composite PCN/CdS/CdIn 2 S 4 integrating phosphorus-doped carbon nitride (PCN), cadmium sulfide (CdS), and indium cadmium sulfide (CdIn 2 S 4 ) was rationally designed via a multi-step assembly process. The optimized heterojunction exhibits outstanding performance, achieving remarkable H 2 and H 2 O 2 production rates of 7614 and 6873 μmol∙g −1 h −1 , respectively. Additionally, it demonstrates ultra-fast degradation kinetics, mineralizing 99.4% of methyl orange within just 30 min. Mechanistically, spontaneous interfacial band bending drives a dual Z-scheme charge transfer pathway. This specific energy band alignment effectively preserves strongly reducing electrons and highly oxidizing holes while significantly suppressing charge carrier recombination. Furthermore, radical trapping confirms that superoxide radicals (∙O 2 − ) are the pivotal active species, driving a two-step single-electron reduction pathway (O 2 →∙O 2- →H 2 O 2 ) for continuous H 2 O 2 generation, and coupling synergistically with localized holes for rapid organic pollutant decomposition.

An S-scheme Ag/CdS/Fe 2 O 3 (Ag/CS/FO) heterojunction was fabricated via a sequential solvothermal and photodeposition method. The microstructure and optoelectronic properties of the synthesized ternary composite were verified by a series of characterization methods. The transfer of photogenerated electron–hole pairs (e − /h + pairs) follows an S-scheme pathway, driven synergistically by the interfacial electric field (IEF) and band bending. That directs electrons (e − ) to the conduction band (CB) of CdS (CS) and holes (h + ) to the valence band (VB) of Fe 2 O 3 (FO), achieving efficient e − /h + pairs separation while maintaining high redox capabilities. Additionally, the incorporated Ag nanoparticles enhance visible-light harvesting via the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect and function as electron-transfer bridges, collectively promoting charge migration. Consequently, the composite exhibits high photocatalytic activity, degrading 98.68% of amoxicillin (AMX) under visible light. It also maintains 91.6% efficiency after four cycles, confirming sound stability. Notably, the material demonstrates superior performance in real-life water matrices (tap and river water), highlighting its strong application potential. Graphical abstract

Cold plasma discharge, surface synthesis and 3D printing were used to fabricate supported photocatalysts. • Three different approaches were employed to immobilize QDs on a fractal polymer substrate. • One of the fabrication routes allowed obtaining a 1 O 2 -generating catalyst. • This hybrid catalyst was more efficient for the purification of water than the free QDs and easy to reuse. Owing to their quantum confinement, quantum dots (QDs) can efficiently generate singlet oxygen, a highly reactive oxygen species (ROS). Although promising for photocatalytic water remediation, their practical application remains limited. Their nanoscale dimensions render them more challenging to deploy than bulk heterogeneous photocatalysts; specifically, their separation and recycling are complex, and catalyst leaching poses a significant issue. In this study, we evaluated several chemical immobilization methods initiated by cold plasma discharge (CPD) to fabricate supported QD-based catalysts for the photodegradation of organic pollutants. Using CdS QDs as a model system, we probed their capacity to generate singlet oxygen. The resin substrates were fabricated by LCD 3D printing and microtextured with fractal architectures. Among the different immobilization strategies, the most successful employed a secondary nanostructured ZnO support to enforce a monolayer dispersion of the QDs. Subsequent in situ encapsulation by a metal–organic framework (MOF) further improved the photostability of the catalyst. This study provides valuable insights and new directions for the facile surface immobilization of functional QDs within controlled architectures for the efficient remediation of organic-contaminated water.
