Phosphor-in-glass (PiG) plays an indispensable role as a highly tunable and easily prepared phosphor material for new-generation high-brightness and high-collimation laser lighting (blue laser diodes + colour converters). However, at low power (<5 W), the poor thermal stability and brittleness of PiGs make it challenging to develop high-intensity, high-brightness PiG materials because of their susceptibility to rupture and sudden drop in luminous efficiency (LE) owing to thermal accumulation under high-energy laser irradiation. In this study, a performance-tunable lithium-aluminium-silicate (LAS) glass system was used to adjust the glass composition and synthesise LAS-glasses that can be sintered at low temperatures. In addition to LuAG: Ce phosphor, LuAG: Ce phosphor-in-LAS (LuAG: Ce-PiGLAS) has been successfully developed, which can withstand an 8.24-W laser irradiation without heat dissipation, achieving a luminous flux of 1248 lm and LE of 204 lm/W. Furthermore, a pre-thermal treatment was used to precipitate the lithium disilicate phase to enhance the resistance of the glass to laser ablation , resulting in a power increase to 8.62 W at 1485 lm and maximum LE increase to 212 lm/W with a 2.5% attenuation at 498 K. High-brightness illumination performance was demonstrated in both transmission and reflection modules. This study is anticipated to generate new prospects for PiG applications and accelerate the development of laser lighting.

Diphenolic acid epoxy resin (DPAE), a new type of bio-based epoxy, exhibits many attractive performances, such as high reactivity, low expansion coefficient (CTE), high glass transition temperature ( T g ) and high storage modulus . However, the dielectric constant of DPAE is not satisfied for the requirements of high frequency circuit field, which need to be further improved to expand its application in emerging area of electronic information. In this work, both dicyclopentadiene phenol epoxy resin (DPR) and cyanate ester (CE) were used to modify DPAE in order to improve its dielectric property , while keeping good heat resistance and low dimensional stability. Furthermore, the influence of curing agent types on properties of DPAE/DPR system was studied. Compared with DPAE resin, both DPAE/DPR and DPAE/CE composites exhibited higher glass transition temperature ( T g ), lower dielectric constant, lower loss tangent with good compatibility between DPAE and those two resins. Moreover, CE resin exhibited better modified effect than DPR on thermal and dielectric properties of DPAE with the same addition. For example, the dielectric constant and loss tangent of DPAE/CE with 50 wt% CE were as low as 3.4 and 0.018 at 1 MHz, respectively.

Herein, we synthesized and characterized glutathione-capped copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) using a convenient one-pot chemical reduction approach based on glutathione as capping and reducing agents. The Ce(III) induced aggregation-induced emission of CuNCs to form a CuNCs-Ce 3+ fluoroprobe due to electrostatic and coordination interactions between Ce 3+ and CuNCs. In contrast to CuNCs, the fluorescent intensities (FLs) of CuNCs-Ce 3+ were enhanced by ~ 40-fold concomitant with 20-nm blue-shift of the maximum emission, and a 3.45-fold lengthening of the average fluorescent lifetime. The FLs of CuNCs-Ce 3+ were selectively quenched at 650 nm by hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) via the redox reaction. Based on this phenomenon, the sensitive assay of H 2 O 2 was realized, and the linear range spanned over the range of 14–140 μM. Notably, the visualization of the fluorescence quenched effect of H 2 O 2 could be easily attained. Additionally, glucose could be specifically oxidized by glucose oxidase to produce H 2 O 2 , and thus the detection of glucose was achieved according to changes in the concentrations of H 2 O 2 . Under optimized conditions, the fluorescent assay of glucose based on the CuNCs-Ce 3+ system offered the linear range of 8–48 μM with detection limit of 2.4 μM. Meanwhile, high selectivity of the as-constructed fluorescent assay allows the sensitive detection of H 2 O 2 and glucose in real-world care products and human serum samples, showing a great application potential in their conventional monitoring.

Ce modified Mn x O y /Al 2 O 3 -La have been prepared to investigate the effect of Ce loadings on pre-breakthrough H 2 S removal efficiency, breakthrough sulfur capacity (BSC) and BSC durability of the sorbents during desulfurization-regeneration cycles. The results showed Ce modification could improve the pre-breakthrough H 2 S removal efficiency of regenerated sorbents during desulfurization-regeneration cycles. The XPS characterization showed that the Ce can promote the binding energy of Mn ion to shift to lower energy, which enhanced H 2 S adsorption on the regenerated sorbent. However, the Ce loading sequence had effect on BSC durability of sorbent during desulfurization-regeneration cycles. The Ce-Mn x O y /Al 2 O 3 -La with co-impregnation of Mn and Ce oxides had higher BSC than Mn x O y /Al 2 O 3 -La, while the Ce/Mn x O y /Al 2 O 3 -La with Ce loading on the surface of Mn x O y /Al 2 O 3 -La had lower BSC and worse BSC durability than Mn x O y /Al 2 O 3 -La. The characterization results showed Ce-Mn x O y /Al 2 O 3 -La obtained better surface area and pore structure than Mn x O y /Al 2 O 3 -La, and Ce ion can promote the increasing of the around electron density of Mn ion, which was beneficial for H 2 S adsorption of Ce-Mn x O y /Al 2 O 3 -La. The poor surface area and pore structure would cause the low BSC of Ce/Mn x O y /Al 2 O 3 -La, and less stability of pore structure might lead to poorer BSC durability of Ce/Mn x O y /Al 2 O 3 -La than Mn x O y /Al 2 O 3 -La during desulfurization-regeneration cycles.

A series Ce m Cu n O x /HZSM-5 sorbents were introduced to remove PH 3 in low-temperature and low-oxygen environments. The effects of copper loading and cerium doping on the adsorption–oxidation performance of the sorbents were investigated. Experimental results showed that doping with 1 wt% of cerium (Ce 1 Cu 30 O X /HZSM-5) could significantly improve the performance of the sorbent. The PH 3 breakthrough capacity was identified as 114.36 mg(PH 3 )•g sorbent -1 . In addition, after three thermal regeneration cycles, the sorbent still has ideal performance. X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses exhibited that CuO was the main active species, and Ce-doping can increase the chemisorption oxygen on the surface of the sorbent. BET results demonstrated that the introduction of cerium could improve the specific surface area and pore volume of sorbent. Hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM-EDS) indicated that cerium species played an important role in uniformly dispersing copper species on the HZSM-5 surface and improving the oxidation performance of sorbent. Moreover, the reaction products and mechanisms were also investigated by XRD, XPS, and in-situ FTIR spectra. The results indicated that the consumption of CuO and the accumulation of phosphorus species (e.g., P, P 2 O 5 , and Cu 3 P) on the surface and inner pores of the sorbent were the primary reasons for the deactivation of the sorbent.

NiO and CeO 2 composite metal oxides (NiO–CeO 2 ) were synthesized by sol-gel method to investigate a degradation system by persulfate (PS) activation with the assistance of visible light (Vis). The phase composition of NiO–CeO 2 was detected by X-ray diffraction (XRD), the morphology of NiO–CeO 2 was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the result of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) proved the element composition and valence state of the NiO–CeO 2 . In the Vis/PS/NiO–CeO 2 system, the degradation rate of Orange II using a concentration of 50 mg/L was as high as 90% in 15 min but it increased to as high as 99% in 60 min. Mechanism studies have shown that the combination of NiO and CeO 2 generated more oxygen vacancies , and activated persulfate to generate active oxygen species. Moreover, the effects of visible light , persulfate concentration and pH were evaluated, and the results showed that the participation of visible light and persulfate could significantly increase the degradation efficiency of Orange II, but pH had little effect on the degradation. Quenching experiments and detection by ESR showed that O 2 ‾, •SO 4 ‾, •OH, and 1 O 2 all contribute to the removal of Orange II. In addition, the recovery and reuse properties of NiO–CeO 2 may lead to sustainable treatment of wastewater.

In this work, H 2 production performances from Enteromorpha prolifera and its char by absorption-enhanced steam gasification using Ce-doped CaO material were investigated. The Ce-doped CaO material improves the H 2 production from Enteromorpha prolifera by steam gasification, which achieves 79.0 vol% H 2 in the syngas. The Ce-doped CaO material with the mass ratio of CeO 2 /CaO = 10:90 seems more appropriate for high H 2 production, tar and char conversion. The presence of CeO 2 leads to good cyclic stability in H 2 production from Enteromorpha prolifera char during the gasification/calcination cycles. After 20 cycles, H 2 concentration and yield from Enteromorpha prolifera char achieve 77.8 vol% and 141.8 mL/g using Ce-doped CaO material, respectively. The CeO 2 facilitates the conductivity of electrons in CaO surface due to the existence of Ce 3+ species, thus CO 2 capture, water gas shift, and steam methane reforming reactions are promoted by CeO 2 . The Ce-doped CaO material maintains the porous microstructure and fine particles during the cycles due to the support of CeO 2 . Therefore, H 2 productions from Enteromorpha prolifera and its char by absorption-enhanced steam gasification using Ce-doped CaO material appear promising.

In this work, a novel method based on gold nanoparticle preconcentration coupled with CE for electrochemiluminescence detection of ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, ofloxacin, and norfloxacin in European eels was developed. The addition of gold nanoparticles induced the rapid enrichment of fluoroquinolones, which was simpler than the conventional enrichment approaches such as solid phase extraction and solid-phase microextraction. More than 100 times enrichment was observed after gold nanoparticle aggregation-based preconcentration. The CE-electrochemiluminescence parameters that affected the separation and detection were optimized. Under the optimized conditions, the linear ranges for the four fluoroquinolones were 0.090–8.0 μmol L−1 with the detection limits between 0.020 and 0.050 μmol L−1. The proposed approach showed the advantages of high sensitivity, high selectivity, a wide linear range, and a low detection limit. It was used to analyze fluoroquinolones in European eel, and the results showed that the developed method can satisfy the detection requirements for fluoroquinolone determination in aquatic products set by China and the European Union.

Deliberately engineering oxide composites on constructing and manipulating interactive structures particularly in surface layers was highly desirable for heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, upon the redox replacement reaction between Ce(IV) precursor (Ce(NO 3 ) 6 2 − ) and Cu 2 O nano-substrate, an attempt to directly engineer the surface structure of Cu-based substrate was performed by the Ce(IV)–Cu 2 O etching-embedding process, then the obtained powders were thermo-treated to get a series of Ce–O–Cu catalysts with different Ce:Cu molar ratios for NH 3 selective catalytic reduction (NH 3 -SCR) of NO. Characterized by ICP-OES, XRD, Raman, XPS, SEM, BET, H 2 -TPR, NO- and NH 3 -TPD measurements, it was demonstrated that the Cu–O–Ce catalysts were structured as CuO matrix with an interactive surface composed by co-present Cu(I)–Cu(II) and Ce(III)–Ce(IV) species, even the introduction of Ce was confined in a quite low loading range (0.83–2.3 wt.%); such a surface exhibited the distinct synergistic effect with positively manipulated physical-chemistry properties such as active site distributions, redox features and surface reactivity compared to pure CuO and traditional Cu–Ce composite catalyst, leading to attractive catalytic performance such as ≥ 9 0 % NO conversion with ≥ 9 5 % N 2 selectivity and the two-fold TOF enhancement versus traditional catalysts, even SO 2 was present in reactant mixture on well-manipulated catalyst (Ce loading at 1.6 wt.%) These results indicated that the etching-embedding strategy illuminated in this work could be referred as a feasible method to directly engineer and construct interactive oxide composite surface for advanced application as well as current efficient Ce–O–Cu catalytic interface for heterogeneous catalysis.

The advanced treatment of municipal secondary effluent by heterogeneous and homogeneous Fenton processes using Fe/Ce-RGO (reduced graphene oxide) and Fe 2+ as catalysts was studied and compared. Sulfamethazine (SMT) was spiked in the effluent to examine the effectiveness of the emerging contaminant removal. The Fe/Ce-RGO catalyst was characterized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and cycle voltammetry curves. The removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD), SMT, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy in 254 nm (UV 254 ) of municipal secondary effluents was examined. The DOC removal efficiency of secondary effluent (without addition of SMT) was 36.30% and 11.74% using Fe/Ce-RGO and Fe 2+ as catalysts, respectively. The removal efficiency of DOC, SCOD, and SMT in heterogeneous Fenton process was higher than that in homogeneous Fenton process. The changes of three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3DEEM) fluorescence, soluble microbial products (SMPs), humic acids, and UV 254 were determined, and the results indicated that UV 254, aromatic proteins, and humic acids decreased rapidly in both processes; however, polysaccharides and protein-like substances were difficult to degrade. Although some toxic substances produced after Fenton-like treatment, the biodegradability of the treated effluent was enhanced.

For single phase dielectric ceramics prepared using a traditional solid state method, the conflict between high dielectric permittivity and low breakdown strength has always limited the improvement of energy storage density. Here, we design a core–shell structure of Sr0.985Ce0.01TiO3 (SCT)@x wt% SiO2 combining a high dielectric permittivity core with an insulating shell material. The sample of x = 3 wt% sintered at 1300 °C has the largest energy storage density ∼2.23 J cm−3. The effects that different amounts of SiO2 have on phase, microstructure, dielectric and energy storage properties were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectrum (SEM-EDS) and dielectric measurements. As verified by finite element simulations, the energy storage properties are mainly governed by the electric field distribution owing to the introduction of a high dielectric permittivity core (SCT) in a low permittivity shell. The shell material provides an electrical shielding effect around the core, resulting in significant reduction in the field strength within the core material. A comparison of experimental and simulated results is also shown, which is in good agreement with the breakdown properties.

Synroc is recognized as the second generation waste form for the immobilization of high-level radioactive waste (HLW). Zirconolite-rich (CaZrTi 2 O 7 ) Synroc minerals were attempted by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) using Fe 2 O 3 , CrO 3 , Ca(NO 3 ) 2 as the oxidants and Ti as the reductant . All designed reactions were ignited and sustained using Ca(NO 3 ) 2 as the oxidant, and zirconolite-rich ceramic matrices were successfully prepared with pyrochlore (Ca 2 Ti 2 O 6 ), perovskite (CaTiO 3 ) and rutile (TiO 2 ) as the minor phases. The sample CN-4, which was designed using Ca(NO 3 ) 2 as the oxidant with TiO 2 /Ti ratio of 7:9, was readily solidified with density of 4.62 g/cm 3 and Vickers hardness of 1052 HV. CeO 2 was successfully stabilized by the CN-4 sample with resultant phase constituent of 2M-CaZrTi 2 O 7 and CaTiO 3 .
