The practical application of Cu 2 O in the field of photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) hydrogen production has been limited by its relatively low photoconversion efficiency and electron mobility. Plasmonic metal nanoparticles have been utilized to enhance the charge separation of semiconductors through resonance energy transfer from metal nanoparticles to semiconductors. In this study, Ag nanosphere (Ag NS)@SiO 2 were combined with Cu 2 O to form triple core–shell nanocomposites, aiming to enhance the photoelectrochemical activity of Cu 2 O under visible-light irradiation. The microstructures of the Ag@SiO 2 @Cu 2 O nanocomposites were regulated by controlling the thickness of SiO 2 interlay and Cu 2 O shell in order to optimize the PEC efficiency. It was found that Ag NS@SiO 2 (5 nm)@Cu 2 O (29 nm) NCs exhibited the highest photocurrent intensity, showing 3.3 times, 11.9 times, and 17.8 times higher values than pure Cu 2 O, pure Ag NS, and AgNS@SiO 2 NPs respectively. Furthermore, the photoelectrocatalytic hydrogen production velocity of Ag NS@SiO 2 (5 nm)@Cu 2 O (29 nm) NCs was around 25 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which has been improved around 4.2 times compared to pure Cu 2 O. This enhanced performance is attributed to plasmon-induced resonance energy transfer from Ag metal nanoparticles to Cu 2 O semiconductor, which may improve the separation efficiency of electron–hole pairs and lead higher photoelectrocatalytic efficiency. Graphic The Ag NS@SiO 2 was integrated with Cu 2 O to form triple core–shell nanocomposites, aiming to enhance the photoelectrochemical activity of Cu 2 O under visible-light irradiation through plasmon-induced resonance energy transfer from Ag to Cu 2 O. And their photoelectrocatalytic performances were optimized by controlling the thickness of SiO 2 interlay and Cu 2 O shell. Ag NS@SiO 2 (5 nm)@Cu 2 O (29 nm) NCs exhibited superior photocurrent intensity and enhanced photoelectrocatalytic hydrogen production rate compared to pure Cu 2 O.

Conventional methodology for accurate identification of breast tumor subtypes is complex and time-consuming. Label-free SERS (surface-enhanced Raman scattering) enables rapid detection of biomolecules and provides intrinsic fingerprint information of analytes. Exploring reliable SERS bioprobes with high sensitivity and repeatability is essential for efficient typing of cancer cells. In this study, a novel core-shell noble metal-semiconductor Cu 2 O@Ag heterostructure with uniform morphology and outstanding SERS activity for label-free detection has been proposed. The Cu 2 O@Ag SERS substrates exhibit exceptional sensitivity to detect 4 nitrophenthiol (4NTP) at extreme low concentration (10 −15 M), and the SERS spectra demonstrate excellent selectivity and repeatability (RSD ≈ 8.84%). The enhancement mechanism is attributed to the synergistic enhancement of photoinduced charge transfer and boosted surface plasmon resonance effect, confirmed by reduced fluorescence lifetime of methylene blue on SERS substrates and enhanced electromagnetic field intensity via finite-difference time-domain computational simulation. The ultrahigh sensitivity and good signal stability endow Cu 2 O@Ag SERS bioprobe potential for accurate detection of four breast cancer cells subtypes. The rich fingerprint information from SERS spectra is processed using linear differentiation analysis, revealing a high accuracy of 93.3% for subtypes classification. These results demonstrate an excellent SERS bioprobe with high sensitivity and repeatability for precision diagnosis has been developed.

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a well-established tumour marker for prostatic carcinoma. In this study, we present a novel, real-time, and ultrasensitive Love-mode surface acoustic wave (L-SAW) immunosensor for PSA detection enhanced by MoS2@Cu2O-Au nanocomposite conjugation. The MoS2@Cu2O-Au nanocomposites were analyzed by SEM, XRD, and EDS. The experiments show a significant improvement in sensitivity and detection limit compared with the previous detection methods utilizing nanogold alone to detect PSA biomolecules. The experimental results show a good linear relationship when the range of PSA concentrations between 200 pg/mL and 5 ng/mL was tested. The experimental results also show good specificity against alpha 1 fetoprotein and L-tryptophan disruptors.

Implant-associated infections (IAIs) are severe complications following orthopedic procedures involving implanted materials. Previous researchers had created various antibacterial coatings to prevent early postoperative infections. Nevertheless, these coatings frequently lack the wear-resistant properties necessary for long-term effectiveness, and their production process is intricate. To overcome this challenge, we developed and employed a chemical technique, incorporating Ag or Cu 2 O nanoparticles uniformly into the surface of titanium alloys to confer antibacterial properties. The microstructure and elemental composition of the coating were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Our results demonstrated that the coating exhibited potent antibacterial activity, eliminating nearly all adhered bacteria within the first 6 hours. Prolonged friction test results revealed that the coating retained notable antibacterial activity and excellent biocompatibility. Notably, the straightforward fabrication process of this coating could allow for its application on implants of various shapes and materials, underscoring its potential for broad clinical adoption. In summary, this simple chemical method for surface modification of titanium alloys could provide long-lasting antibacterial properties, offering a cost-efficient and transformative strategy for preventing implant-associated infections. Three-dimensional (3D) nanostructures which have the ability to expand carrier diffusion channels and provide plenty of electrocatalytic active sites are extensively regarded as highly effective strategies for enhancing the sensing performance of electrocatalysts. Herein, a highly sensitive Cu 2 O/PANI-GO electrode was constructed simply via in-situ electrodeposition of the graphene oxide (GO) doped polyaniline PANI (PANI-GO) 3D porous network structure on a flexible stainless-steel (SS) foil substrate. Subsequently, Cu₂O nanoparticles were electrodeposited onto the unique 3D network architecture which provides abundant active sites for Cu 2 O deposition. Meanwhile, the introduction of conductive PANI and GO improves the conductivity of the sensing catalysts and enhances the electrocatalytic performance of Cu 2 O. The electrochemical behavior of glucose and ascorbic acid (AA) was investigated through cyclic voltammetry (CV). CV results have demonstrated that the formation of a 3D porous network structure provides a substantial number of electronic pathways, which facilitate direct electron transfer between biomolecules and electrocatalysts, thereby promoting the electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose and ascorbic acid (AA). According to chronoamperometry, such a 3D porous network structure electrode exhibits outstanding sensing performance for glucose and AA detection, including lower detection limit and higher sensitivity over a wide detection range compared with the reported similar Cu 2 O-based electrodes. The excellent anti-interference, stability, reproducibility, and bending stability are also obtained. Furthermore, the glucose concentration in diluted fetal bovine serum and AA concentration in diluted vitamin c beverages were quantitatively measured, and the results were satisfactory, indicating that the proposed flexible electrochemical sensing electrode provides considerable prospects for practical human health and food safety monitoring.

The electrochemical evolution of heterointerfaces in conversion-type anodes has long been poorly understood. Whether engineered interfaces survive cycling, and if not, how separated phases maintain function, remains unclear. Using two model systems Fe 3 C/Fe 3 O 4 /C (inert conductive phase) and Cu 2 O/Cu/C (oxidizable conductive phase), we uncover two diametrically opposite evolution pathways that are dictated solely by the oxidation behavior of the conductive phase. In the inert Fe 3 C system, the initial core-shell interface completely dissociates. Yet the porous carbon network alone maintains electronic connectivity, creating a remote synergy mode in which the carbon network sustains battery operation by compensating for lost heterointerface contact, without requiring direct interfacial contact between the active phases. In the oxidizable Cu system, we directly visualize a phenomenon. Cu 2 O undergoes an electrochemically driven facet reconstruction from the (111) to the (200) orientation, which progressively lowers the overpotential for the Cu → Cu 2 O reaction and makes the electrode self-optimizing with cycling. Post-mortem electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy provide direct visual evidence for both pathways. Kinetic analysis shows mixed diffusion capacitive control, with the CCC system reaching a 46.5% capacitive contribution at 1.0 mV s −1 . Full cells with K-PBA cathodes achieve 75.0% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 , demonstrating practical viability. This work challenges the long-held assumption that interfacial retention is necessary for electrochemistry. Instead, it establishes a universal design principle for durable conversion-type anodes. Ensuring electron-transport pathway integrity, whether through direct contact or indirect network connectivity, is the key. The discovery of electrochemically driven facet reconstruction also opens new avenues for controlling surface crystallography under operating conditions.

Ciprofloxacin (CIP) is widely utilized for the treatment of bacterial infections due to its broad-spectrum antibacterial properties; however, excessive residues inevitably cause environmental pollution. Therefore, the development of sensitive and accurate analytical methods for CIP detection remains important. Herein, a novel self-cleaning surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor was fabricated for the ultrasensitive and specific detection of CIP. ZnFe 2 O 4 -Cu 2 O-Au@Ag (ZCAA) nanocomposites (NCs) were synthesized by decorating ZnFe 2 O 4 -Cu 2 O with various amounts of Au@Ag nanocrystals, thereby integrating dual functions of pollutant detection and photocatalytic degradation. Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation was adopted to elucidate the correlation between Au@Ag loading density and SERS performance. After modification with molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs), the prepared ZnFe 2 O 4 -Cu 2 O-Au@Ag-MIPs (ZCAA-MIPs) exhibited robust anti-interference capability, enabling specific detection of CIP even in the presence of structurally similar antibiotics such as tetracycline (TC) and oxytetracycline (OTC). A limit of detection (LOD) of 9.3 × 10 −11 M was achieved in aqueous media. Furthermore, the sensor successfully identified trace CIP on the epidermal surfaces of river snail, demonstrating its practical applicability in real-world samples. Time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses revealed that the synergistic interaction between the ZnFe 2 O 4 -Cu 2 O heterojunction and Au@Ag nanocrystals accelerated charge carrier migration and optimized interfacial charge transfer. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further verified the superior degradation capacity of ZCAA substrate. Benefiting from its intrinsic magnetic properties, ZCAA-MIPs sensor was easily recycled under external magnetic field and retained stable SERS performance after five consecutive recycling cycles. This magnetic MIPs-SERS sensor provides a reliable and sustainable platform for monitoring CIP residues in complex water environments.

Natural enzymes are efficient catalysts but face high costs and instability, leading to the development of artificial enzymes like nanozymes. While noble metals commonly demonstrate high peroxidase (POD)-like activity, their expense limits their practical use. In contrast, 3d transition metal oxides, though less active, are more cost-effective due to their natural abundance, with Cu(I) emerging as a promising candidate. However, maximizing POD-like activity in small-sized Cu2O nanoparticles (NPs) often requires complex synthetic processes and labor-intensive purification, making mass production challenging. To address these issues, it is crucial to develop POD nanozymes with simplified production methods that would reduce costs and facilitate their real-world applications. Herein, we present a straightforward and scalable method for preparing Cu/Cu2O core/shell NPs densely embedded within a porous carbon-based framework by calcining Cu precursor and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) at elevated temperatures in nitrogen. The resulting samples with Cu/Cu2O NPs around 15 nm in size can be obtained at temperatures below 600 °C. Importantly, they can be used directly without purification, significantly reducing production costs compared to natural enzymes. The sample obtained at 300 °C, exhibiting the highest Cu(I) content, displays optimal POD-like activity and was further demonstrated in the detection of glutathione and glucose. This study is anticipated to guide the future development of scalable and cost-effective POD nanozymes for practical applications.

Efficient conversion of glycerol, an inevitable by-product in the transesterification process producing biodiesel, to acrylic acid (AA) and 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO) via a cleaner process is attractive and challenging. In this work, the simultaneous production of AA and 1,2-PDO from glycerol over Cu2O/acid-activated montmorillonite (Cu2O/MMT-H) catalysts without external oxygen and hydrogen was first reported. A 100% conversion of glycerol, 72% selectivity to AA, and 10% selectivity to 1,2-PDO were obtained under optimal conditions. The nanostructure and chemical state of Cu2O and MMT-H played important roles in the conversion of glycerol. The corresponding mechanism for the oxydehydration and hydrogenolysis of glycerol to AA and 1,2-PDO over the Cu2O/MMT-H catalysts was proposed. Dehydration of glycerol occurred at the primary carbon to form acetol which was subsequently hydrogenated to form 1,2-PDO. Acrolein was obtained by a dehydration reaction of glycerol at secondary carbon, followed by the oxidation of acrolein to AA. The Cu2O/MMT-H-150 catalysts were reused three times without significant deactivation and structural changes. This work provides a new route for producing AA and 1,2-PDO simultaneously from glycerol in a one-pot way.

Anesthetic drug wastage has increasingly become the main resource of operating room sewage, which poses a great risk to the safety of humans and other organisms. Propofol is the most widely used anesthetic drug in the world, and also occupies the largest proportion of the total anesthetic wastage in the operating room. In this work, a 2D Cu2O anchored carbon catalyst (Cu2O@NC) was prepared by the assembly-pyrolysis process and successfully applied to peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. We took propofol as a typical example and investigated the removal activity through heterostructure-enhanced advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Through the degradation process, propofol can be removed from 20 ppm to ultralow levels within 5 min using the PMS/Cu2O@NC system. The degradation pathway of propofol was deduced through quantum chemical calculation and LC/GC-MS results. The final products were verified as CO2 and H2O. Moreover, sulfate radicals (SO4˙−) proved to be the dominant reactive oxidation species by radical scavenger experiments and ESR results. In addition, it has great universality for various pharmaceuticals such as tetracycline (TC), amoxicillin (AMX), cephalexin (CPX), and norfloxacin (NFX). Our work provided the possibility to treat operation room sewage in a rapid, high-efficiency, and feasible way.

Graphical Dual catalysis : A dual functional CeO 2 /Cu 2 O/CuO nanocomposite was synthesized by a facile chemical method using Ce-based Ce-Al-Cu glass ribbons as a precursor. The nanocomposite can rapidly degrade azo dyes including orange II (OII), methyl orange (MO), and congo red (CR) under dark conditions with no chemical and energy input. Under visible light irradiation, the composite also showed high efficiency for the decomposition azo-free dyestuff such as methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RhB). Under visible light irradiation, the composite also showed high efficiency for the decomposition azo-free dyes such as methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RhB). The excellent performances of the nanocomposite in both dark and light conditions are attributed to the synergistic effects of its composition and the nanoparticle structure that have large surface areas and contain many active sites, and to the formation of heterojunctions in the Ce/Cu Oxide. The high performance of this bi-functional catalyst made from industrially-prepared atomically homogenous amorphous metallic demonstrates the promise of high-performance catalysts based on multi-component metallic glass materials.

Hollow double-shell Cu 2 O@CuCo 2 O 4 (HDS-Cu 2 O@CuCo 2 O 4 ) Z-Scheme photocatalyst with a porous structure was designed and successfully synthesized by anchoring Cu 2 O nanoparticles (NPs) on the surface of CuCo 2 O 4 hollow spheres in situ. HDS-Cu 2 O@CuCo 2 O 4 exhibited remarkable photocatalytic activity towards chlorotetracycline (CTC) oxidation and nitrobenzene (NB) reduction under visible light irradiation. Total organic carbon (TOC) removal of 63% was achieved over HDS-Cu 2 O@CuCo 2 O 4 for CTC degradation, which is 1.7 and 2.1 times higher than that of pristine Cu 2 O and CuCo 2 O 4 . Moreover, the photocatalytic activity for both oxidation and reduction were simultaneously improved in CTC + NB mixed system owing to the presence of the synergistic photocatalytic effect. The superior photocatalytic performance of HDS-Cu 2 O@CuCo 2 O 4 hybrid system should be mainly attributed to the unique hollow structure as well as the Z-scheme charge transfer pathway, which not only improve the utilization of visible light but also enhance the separation efficiency of photoexcited charge carriers. The proposed strategy provides an insight into the application of hollow Z-Scheme photocatalyst in environmental remediation.
