Ceramic-based materials are widely used as dental restorative materials due to their excellent corrosion resistance and low shrinkage. However, the pathogenicity caused by abnormal adhesion and colonization of these dental restorative materials by bacteria in the oral cavity significantly affects the restorative results. Therefore, we report an efficient anti-Streptococcus mutans ( S. mutans ) ceramic material achieved by introducing small copper oxide nanoparticles into the sodium aluminosilicate ceramic material. Our results show that the composite ceramic can efficiently kill S. mutans (up to 99.99% antibacterial rate) and has excellent biocompatibility. By examining copper ion release assay, SEM observation, MTT, total protein, and DNA content after co-culture of bacteria, we speculate that copper ions in the composite ceramic disrupt the permeability of S. mutans membrane, affect the respiratory system of bacteria, and disrupt DNA proliferation thereby affecting the regular life activity of bacteria and eventually killing S. mutans . Based on our work, it is feasible to develop an efficient antimicrobial material for restorative dentistry by introducing copper ions into the ceramic materials, providing a new perspective for designing high-performance antimicrobial dental restorative materials.

Pigments with dark appearance and high solar energy reflectance are of great application value. In the present work, dark grey composite pigments with a TiO2/CuO core–shell structure were prepared through calcination of precursors obtained from the precipitation of Cu(OH)2 on TiO2 particles. The composition, structure, and optical properties of the synthesised powders were characterised by colourimetry, near-infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The pigments are composed of rutile TiO2 and tenorite CuO, and the powder colour changes from white to dark grey as the Cu content increases. With a molar ratio of CuO to TiO2 of 0.6, the pigment presents optimal colour (a* = 1.66, b* = −2.19, L* = 52.37) and optical performance. The near-infrared reflectance, the solar reflectance in the near-infrared region, and the total solar reflectance reach 87.2, 70.6, and 37.2 %, respectively. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the composite pigments exhibit a deeper colour and higher reflectivity than conventional dark-blended powders. These cool dark pigments could be applied in the coatings for buildings (roofs and walls) to improve building comfortability and reduce cooling energy consumption.

In this study, the constitutive relationships of CuO/ZnO, CuO/Ga2O3, ZnO/Ga2O3 bimetallic catalysts and CuO/ZnO/Ga2O3 ternary catalysts were systematically investigated to reveal the mechanism of the metal–component interactions on the catalytic performance. In the bimetallic system, ZnO inhibits CuO sintering through a physical barrier effect, the CuO/Ga2O3 interface promotes the formation of adsorbed oxygen to enhance the resistance to carbon deposition, and the ZnO/Ga2O3 solid-solution structure significantly enhances the electron-transfer efficiency. In the ternary catalyst with an M2+ : M3+ ratio of 3 : 1, the high specific surface of the layered structure with abundant active sites enabled CuO/ZnO/Ga2O3-3 to exhibit optimal performance: the synergistic effect between the CuO and Zn9Ga2O12 crystalline surfaces enhanced electron transfer and metal–carrier interactions, and the ratio of adsorbed oxygen reached 78.42%, which effectively promoted CO oxidation and CO2 generation. When applied to methanol steam reforming (MSR), the catalyst achieved 99.89% methanol conversion, 55.30 mmol g−1 h−1 H2 production rate, and only 0.91% CO concentration, combining highly efficient catalytic activity and anti-sintering stability. The results provide a theoretical basis for the structural design and performance optimization of multi-component catalysts.

Osteomyelitis is a refractory bacterial infection of bone, presenting significant clinical management challenges due to its limited therapeutic outcome. Here, we developed heterojunction-structured sub-1 nm copper oxide-decorated strontium titanate nanosheets (Cu-STO NSs), which integrate piezocatalytic reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation with augmented copper-induced bacterial death for synergistic osteomyelitis treatment. Under ultrasound (US) irradiation, the oxygen vacancies and heterojunction structure of Cu-STO NSs facilitate the separation of piezo-generated electron–hole pairs while reducing energy barriers, thereby enhancing ROS generation. This process is augmented by the US-accelerated Cu 2+ /Cu + redox cycling, which enables sustained hydroxyl radicals supply via Fenton-like reactions. The US-driven piezocatalytic action simultaneously enhances bacterial membrane permeability, facilitating intracellular copper overload and thereby triggering copper-induced metabolic toxicity in Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ). Subsequent release of bioactive Cu and Sr ions from Cu-STO NSs significantly upregulates osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow stromal cells. In rat osteomyelitis, Cu-STO NSs achieve efficient bacterial eradication while stimulating on-demand bone regeneration. This work thus presents a non-invasive, spatiotemporal controlled copper-induced bacterial death strategy that concurrently addresses antibacterial and osteogenic challenges in infected bone regeneration. The escalating challenge of bacterial resistance necessitates the development of novel antibacterial agents, positioning the synthesis of nanomaterials as a pivotal strategy for controlling pathogenic bacteria in the food sector. In this study, a novel H₂O₂ self-supplying nanocomposite was developed, comprising Fe/Mn nanoparticles functionalized with cuprous oxide (CuO₂), denoted as Fe/Mn@CuO₂. This composite exhibit tandem peroxidase (POD)-mimetic and glutathione (GSH)-depleting activities, enabling the on-demand generation of hydroxyl radicals via self-produced H₂O₂ and O₂ under acidic conditions (pH 5.5). The synergistic integration of H₂O₂ self-generation, POD-like catalysis, and GSH consumption significantly enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, leading to efficient eradication of E. coli (99.4%) and Staphylococcus aureus (99.1%) and remarkably antibiofilm efficacy. This multi-mechanistic action induced pronounced morphological alterations and severe membrane disruption in both bacterial strains. Furthermore, Fe/Mn@CuO₂ demonstrated the ability to denature DNA/RNA, disrupt energy metabolism, and achieve potent bacterial inactivation without detectable cytotoxic side effects. This work marked a substantial advancement in overcoming the drawbacks of conventional bactericidal strategy by combining self-sustaining H₂O₂ supply, POD-like activity, and GSH depletion, thereby presenting a highly promising antibacterial platform. Transition metal (TM) doped transition metal oxides (TMOs) have emerged as promising materials for supercapacitor application due to their redox activity, large surface area, and high specific capacitance. However, optimizing their electrochemical properties remains challenging. In this work, we have synthesized Ni- and Co-doped CuO nanocomposites via a straightforward hydrothermal approach to examine the effects of doping on their nanostructure, crystallinity, and redox properties. Additionally, machine learning (ML) was employed to optimize fabricated material composition to enhance the electrochemical efficacy of the designed materials. Results demonstrate that ML-optimized Ni-doped CuO has shown a high specific capacitance of 496 Fg −1 at a current density of 1.5 Ag −1 as compared to Co-doped CuO (245 Fg −1 ). Ni-doped CuO achieved a high-power density of 12,469 Wkg −1 and energy density of 111 Whkg −1 , demonstrating enhanced electrochemical performance. The improved properties of Ni-doped CuO are attributed to enhance synergistic effect between Ni-doped CuO, which facilitates faster electron transfer and enhances the material's stability and achieved capacitance retention of 95.1 %. This study presents an economical and effective method for optimizing TM-doped CuO nanocomposites. Ni-doping exhibits excellent performance, which offers significant potential for next-generation energy storage devices.

Undesirable dendrite growth and infinite volume expansion are the major barriers to the potential application for next-generation safe Li metal batteries. To solve these problems, we herein report electroplating CuO nanoneedle arrays on Ni foam (NCNF) as 3D porous framework for Li metal batteries. The influence of different morphologies of CuO on guiding Li plating/stripping behavior has been investigated. The homogenous deposition of Li can be attributed to the interspace between the CuO nanoneedles, which is remarkably superior over granular CuO on Ni foam (GCNF) at high areal capacity. The hierarchical skeleton can not only decrease local current inhomogeneity but also alleviate the volume change of Li. The NCNF electrode delivers a higher Coulombic efficiency of Li deposition comparing with the bare Ni foam and GCNF. Furthermore, enhanced cycling stability with small overpotential can be achieved in symmetric cells. In a Li/LiFePO 4 full cell, the excellent cycling performance also proves the superiority of NCNF@Li composite electrode.

A ternary ZnO/CuO/cellulose-derived carbon (CBC) heterostructure was synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal process for efficient room-temperature detection of ammonia (NH 3 ) with effective selectivity. The integration of n-type zinc oxide and p-type copper oxide within the conductive CBC network facilitates rapid charge transfer while providing abundant adsorption sites. Characterization by XRD, XPS, and TEM confirmed the presence of crystalline ZnO and CuO species uniformly dispersed throughout the porous CBC matrix. The composite sensor demonstrated a response value of 29.2% to 100 ppm NH 3 , with rapid response and recovery times (38 s and 41 s). UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy indicated a reduced bandgap (3.10 eV), suggesting enhanced visible-light absorption and improved charge separation. The sensor exhibited reasonable repeatability over a 30-day continuous detection cycle in a 200 ppm ammonia environment. In addition, the sensor maintained stable response characteristics over five consecutive sensing cycles at 200 ppm NH 3 . The synergistic effect of p-n heterojunctions combined with the conductive CBC framework effectively enhances surface reactivity. Meanwhile, although the composite features a flexible and biodegradable carbon backbone, its integration potential for wearable Internet of Things (IoT) devices remains to be thoroughly investigated, and further optimization of mechanical endurance is required before practical application. Overall, this low-cost, eco-friendly composite meets the urgent demand for timely ammonia detection in areas such as environmental assessment.

This study proposes a synergistic approach combining high-performance sensing materials with a deep learning prediction algorithm for accelerated detection. The metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived CuO nanoparticles and CeO 2 nanorods were synthesized by co-precipitation and solvothermal methods. After annealing treatment, the CuO/CeO 2 nanocomposite was prepared by mechanical mixing. The successful synthesis of CuO/CeO 2 was confirmed by characterization techniques such as XRD, SEM, TEM, and XPS. The CuO/CeO 2 nanocomposite exhibited excellent CO sensing performance, including a low operating temperature (160°C), fast response and recovery times (100 ppm, 8 s/14 s), a low detection limit (1 ppm), high selectivity, as well as good repeatability and long-term stability. The excellent CO sensing performance is primarily attributed to the p-n heterojunction formed between CuO and CeO 2 , as well as the structure of CeO 2 nanorod, which effectively suppresses the aggregation of CuO nanoparticle. The sensing mechanism of the CuO/CeO 2 nanocomposite towards CO gas was further investigated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. To improve signal quality and detection speed, the sliding window adaptive Kalman filter (SW-AKF) is adopted to suppress noise, and a time series prediction model is constructed based on the Informer architecture (using multi-head probabilistic sparse self-attention and self-attention distillation) to achieve advanced prediction of CO resistance signals.

Burning rate modulation is a crucial but challenging technology for designing solid propellants. The core–shell structured Al@AP and Al@AP/CuO were prepared and their thermal reaction properties were investigated at different pressures. The precise catalytic mechanism of doped CuO in oxidizer and the key reason for its burning rate modulating effect on solid propellants were elucidated by combining DFT calculations. The *NH 4 ClO 4 on the CuO (1 1 1) surface is more likely to undergo a dehydrogenation reaction first. The large difference in activation energy between *NH 4 ClO 4 →*NH 3 +*ClO 4 +*H and *NH 4 ClO 4 → NH 3 + HClO 4 explains the reasons that CuO can reduce the ignition delay of the Al@AP. CuO promotes the decomposition of the AP@Al at the low- and high-temperature decomposition (LTD and HTD) stage. For the Al@AP-CuO, the temperature of the high-temperature decomposition peak (THTD) does not shift to the lower temperature range with increasing pressure. These results are responsible for a reduction of pressure exponent in the presence of minor CuO as reported in the literature. CuO can facilitate the transformation process *NH 3 →*NH 2 on the CuO (1 1 1) surface at low-temperature and low-pressure conditions. However, at high-temperature and high-pressure conditions, it can inhibit the reaction *NH 2 →*NH→*N, so the burning rate of solid propellants can be controlled.

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is one of the most promising technologies for biofuel production. The preparation and application of catalysts for HTL have been the research focus in recent years. In this study, a new synergistic catalytic process strategy is proposed. CuO–CeO2/γ-Al2O3 was used as an in situ hydrogen donor catalyst and Ni–Co/SAPO-34 was synthesized for hydroprocessing to improve bio-oil production process. The results of XRD and XPS demonstrated that the metal components were well supported on the catalyst. When the two catalysts were mixed, the yield of bio-oil increased from 51.00% to 64.51%, the carbon recovery rate raised from 69.53% to 88.18%, the energy recovery rate grew from 63.42% to 80.22%, and the S content is relatively reduced by 83.3%. Also, TG analysis showed that the content of light components in bio-oil increased. Moreover, the hydrocarbons and alcohols were observed to a higher proportion from the GC-MS analysis. This new method still has high catalytic activity after repeated use for five times. This study provides a new idea for preparing higher yield and superior quality bio-oil.

Carbon steel is a widely used metallic material. It is prone to corrosion. In this study, we designed and fabricated a superhydrophobic layer with corrosion resistance for protection of carbon steel substrate. Multiple layers were formed that acted as barriers to protect the substrate from corrosion. This superhydrophobic layer reduced the contact area between the substrate and the corrosive medium owing to the superhydrophobicity. The experimental results showed that a copper layer uniformly covered the carbon steel substrate, and the outer surface of the copper layer was converted into copper oxide , which had a multi-scale structure. The Cu/CuO double layer was modified with stearic acid (SA) to form a Cu/CuO@SA superhydrophobic layer. The superhydrophobic layer exhibited a high water contact angle (up to 160°) and a low sliding angle (<3°). The superhydrophobic layer also exhibited repulsive effect to salt, acidic and alkaline solutions. Atmospheric stability test and UV irradiation test were conducted and the results indicated that the superhydrophobic layer was stable throughout the test period. The corrosion potential of the superhydrophobic sample was −0.18 V and the corrosion current density was 7.72 × 10 −7 A cm −2 , which was one order of magnitude lower than that of the carbon steel substrate. These results indicate that the superhydrophobic sample had a low corrosion tendency and corrosion rate. The polarization resistance and impedance modulus of the superhydrophobic sample were two orders of magnitude higher than the bare steel sample, indicating corrosion resistance and effective protection to the carbon steel substrate.
