Constructing Z-scheme AgI@MIL-101(Fe) heterojunction photocatalyst for efficient photodegradation of oxytetracycline hydrochloride under visible light

Hongbin He,Xi Zhu,Ziping Huo,Bolong Liang,Shu-Xuan Liang

AgI@MIL-101(Fe) photocatalyst was fabricated via in-situ precipitation method. • The photocatalyst achieved 95.25% degradation efficiency of OTC within 180 min. • The photocatalyst exhibited excellent practical applicability in real water samples. • Z-scheme heterojunction mechanism and degradation pathway were elucidated. Owing to their extensive and long-term application as well as poor degradability, antibiotics are inevitably persistent in aquatic environments due to their extensive and long-term use as well as heir difficulty in degradation. The development of efficient photocatalysts is therefore of crucial significance in environmental purification. In this study, a Z-scheme MIL-101(Fe) heterojunction photocatalyst was rationally designed and fabricated via a combined solvothermal and in-situ precipitation methods for the efficient removal of oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC), where MIL-101(Fe) is a typical member of the metal-organic framework (MOF) family. A series of characterization methods were employed to systematically observe the morphology and microstructure, optical properties, and photocatalytic performance of the as-prepared photocatalyst. The AgI@MIL-101(Fe) nanocomposites achieved an OTC degradation efficiency of 95.25% within 180 min under visible-light irradiation, demonstrating superior photocatalytic activity compared to a single-component counterparts. Structural characterizations results indicated that AgI formed a tight interface contact with MIL-101(Fe), which provided an effective structural foundation for theheterojunction construction. AgI particles were well dispersed on MIL-101(Fe), effectively mitigating their aggregation and thus creating abundant light absorption and reaction sites for photocatalytic reactions. Photoelectrochemical measurements further demonstrated that the nanocomposite possessed strong light absorption ability and high separation efficiency for photogenerated carriers. The as-prepared photocatalyst also exhibited excellent practical applicability in the treatment of actual water samples from Baiyangdian Lake. Five cycles of experiments indicated that its outstanding structural and catalytic stability. Mechanistic investigations identified superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ) as the primary active factors responsible for OTC degradation. Finally, the typical Z-scheme heterojunction mechanism and degradation pathway of OTC were finally proposed. This work provides a new design strategy and practical reference for the development of high-performance photocatalysts targeting the efficient removal of OTC and other antibiotics from aquatic environments. Spatially confined TiO2@MIL-101-Fe S-scheme heterojunctions enable efficient and selective visible-light oxidation of cyclohexane

Xiaojing Tian,Zhiqi Qu,Jiaoyang Wang,Ying Zhang,Zhiping Li,Dandan Peng

Construct TiO 2 @MIL-101-Fe S-scheme via impregnation in situ hydrolysis. • Hierarchically distributed TiO 2 maximizes interfacial contact. • Achieves 13.91% cyclohexane conversion and retains high activity after five cycles. • Interfacial fields drive spatial charge separation and preserve redox potentials. • Hierarchical confinement and pore-mouth anchoring enable selective C H activation. The selective photocatalytic oxidation of cyclohexane is a sustainable and environmentally friendly route for KA-oil production, yet it remains limited by low conversion, moderate selectivity, and inefficient charge utilization. This study employed an in-situ TBOT hydrolysis strategy to synthesize a TiO 2 @MIL-101-Fe S-scheme heterojunction with hierarchically distributed TiO 2 nanodomains within the MOF pores, at pore mouths, and on the external surface. This spatially engineered heterostructure enhances photogenerated carrier separation, stabilizes the interface, and improves cyclohexane oxidation efficiency and KA-oil selectivity. The optimized 50 wt% composite material achieved a cyclohexane conversion rate of 14.3%, which was 2.17 times that of the original MIL-101-Fe material. Meanwhile, it still maintained a cyclohexane conversion rate of up to 13.9% and excellent catalytic activity after five cycles. Steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence, electrochemical impedance, and transient photocurrent measurements reveal accelerated charge separation and prolonged carrier lifetime, enabled by an S-scheme heterojunction with a built-in interfacial electric field. Radical trapping and ESR studies indicate that photogenerated holes and electrons dominate C H activation, with reactive oxygen species contributing synergistically. DFT calculations confirm directional electron transfer and preserved high redox potentials. This work highlights spatially confined S-scheme heterojunctions as a general strategy to enhance photocatalytic efficiency, selectivity, and stability, offering a promising avenue for solar-driven hydrocarbon oxidation. Selective Oxidation of Acetoin to Diacetyl by Superoxo Species on Fe-MIL-88B_NH2 and NHPI under Oxic Conditions

Chong Zhang,Yu-Dong Shan,Yi-Ying Lin,Yu-Le Wang,Zheng Yang,Yong Liu,Song-Hai Wu,Xu Han

Diacetyl (2,3-butanedione) is an important ingredient used in the food and perfume industries, whose synthesis is largely constrained by environmental pollution and low selectivity. In this study, Fe-MIL-88B_NH2 has been successfully synthesized via the microwave-assisted solvothermal method, which exhibits high reactivity in acetoin oxidation, affording 81.3% conversion and 95.8% selectivity toward diacetyl under mild conditions in the presence of NHPI (N-hydroxyphthalimide). Raman and a series of characterizations reveal that O2 is activated by surface Fe(II) on Fe-MIL-88B_NH2 with the generation of ≡Fe-OO• superoxo, which then abstracts H from acetoin with the formation of diacetyl and H2O2. Quenching experiments indicate that ≡Fe-OO• superoxo on Fe-MIL-88B_NH2 is the primary oxidizing species in the oxidation of acetoin. EPR and DPD analyses further reveal that the NHPI/PINO cycle effectively shuttles H from the acetoin to ≡Fe-OO• superoxo, thus enhancing the oxidation efficiency of acetoin. This study enriches our understanding on the importance of surface superoxo species and the H-shuttle in the selective oxidation of alcohols toward ketones.

Lewis acid-base interaction-reinforced MIL-101(Cr)@SnIn4S8 S‑scheme heterojunction for efficient gas-solid CO2 photoreduction

Longjie Lai,Jie Tao,Yutao Xue,Xusheng Suo,Juan Liu,Qi Liu,Aihua Yuan

Interfacial engineering in heterostructure photocatalysts is crucial for efficient charge migration, yet achieving rational and controllable interface design remains a major challenge. In this work, SnIn 4 S 8 nanosheets were in situ grown on the octahedral surface of MIL-101(Cr) to leverage the Lewis acid-base properties of Cr and S, thereby enabling the controlled construction of an ion-coordinated interface. The resulting MIL-101(Cr)@SnIn 4 S 8 heterojunction enabled efficient capture and conversion of CO 2 and H 2 O. Furthermore, the Lewis acid-base coordination induces interfacial electron density redistribution, generating a built-in electric field that drives the formation of an S-scheme heterojunction between MIL-101(Cr) and SnIn 4 S 8 , while simultaneously preserving high‑energy photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Consequently, MIL-101(Cr)@SnIn 4 S 8 exhibited superior CO 2 photoreduction performance with H 2 O in the gas-solid phase, delivering a CO evolution rate of 26.9 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 . This work provides a viable strategy for interfacial engineering and demonstrates the application potential of S-scheme heterojunctions in photocatalytic reactions.

Enhanced VOCs degradation performance of TiO₂-OV/NH₂-MIL-125 by synergistic modulation of oxygen vacancy and heterojunction

Yang Gao,Xian Du,Zhuo Li,Lihan Wang,Bo Tian,Ruixue Tian,Huiling Du

With the development of industry, large quantities of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) not only cause damage to the ecological environment, but also pose a serious threat to human health. At present, most photocatalysts used for benzene treatment still suffer from problems such as narrow light absorption range, high electron-hole recombination rate, and low charge transfer efficiency. Therefore, the development of high-performance photocatalysts is extremely urgent. The introduction of oxygen vacancies and the construction of heterojunctions can effectively solve the above problems. In this study, a defect-rich photocatalyst was combined with a topology-structured metal-organic framework (MOF) to construct a tightly coupled heterojunction, aiming to address these issues and improve the photocatalytic degradation performance of benzene. By introducing oxygen vacancy-rich TiO₂ nanosheets into NH₂-MIL-125, a tightly coupled Z-scheme heterojunction composite photocatalyst is fabricated. The benzene degradation efficiency of the composite reaches up to 98.5%, which is 1.47 times and 1.27 times that of pure NH₂-MIL-125 and oxygen vacancy-rich TiO₂, respectively, while also exhibiting remarkable stability and high adsorption capacity. Oxygen vacancies act as active sites that strengthen the interfacial electronic interaction of the composite, thereby optimizing the electron transport pathway of the heterojunction and improving the carrier separation efficiency. Under the dual modulation of the heterojunction and oxygen vacancies, the built-in electric field is further intensified, leading to a significant enhancement in the adsorption and catalytic performance of the composite. This study provides an effective design strategy for utilizing oxygen vacancy-driven heterojunctions in catalysts for the efficient abatement of VOCs.

A novel dual-mode Fluorescence/Colorimetric Aptasensor Based on NH2-MIL-88B(Fe)/CDs-Apt for Kanamycin Detection

Hou Huijing,Luo Mingming,Li Fang,Tan Yijun,Liu Ruowei,Xu Longping,Feng Yanwen,Guo Xiangli,Wu Zijian

Kanamycin (KANA) is a veterinary drug residue that is highly scrutinized in food safety testing. In this study, a metal-organic framework-based aptamer-nanoenzyme (NH 2 -MIL-88B(Fe)/CDs-Apt) was introduced for the dual-mode detection of KANA. NH 2 -MIL-88B(Fe) catalyzes the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by H₂O₂ to form blue ox-TMB, thereby enabling colorimetric detection. As a fluorescence quencher, NH 2 -MIL-88B(Fe) quenches the fluorescence of CDs via photogenerated electron transfer (PET) or fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) mechanisms. The detection limits were 0.716 fM (fluorescent) and 0.709 fM (colorimetric), respectively. The proposed aptasensor was successfully applied to the detection of KANA in eggs, honey, and lake water. This aptasensor demonstrates high sensitivity and accuracy, as well as broad application potential.

Dual function platform of NH2-MIL(Fe)-modified NH₂-PS for sulfamethoxazole elimination: Adsorption and Fenton-like oxidation

Lixun Fan,Yonggang Zhao,Mingli Ye,Hongyun Niu,Yaqi Cai

NH₂-MIL(Fe) is grafted onto amino-functionalized NH₂-PS resin to gain micro-nanoscale adsorbent. • SMX adsorption is favorable at pH 5.2–8.0 with an adsorption capacity of 250.61 mg·g −1 . • Hydrogen bonding and electrostatic attraction are the driving forces for SMX adsorption. • The Fe(III) centers in MOF endow NH₂-PS@NH₂-MIL(Fe) Fenton-like catalytic activity. Sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) are ubiquitous in the aquatic environment and difficult to remove using conventional wastewater treatment processes. Adsorption and Fenton-like oxidation are efficient techniques for the elimination of SAs from water. In this study, a novel hierarchical micro-nano structural adsorbent was synthesized by grafting Fe-based MOFs (NH 2 -MIL(Fe)) onto amino-functionalized polystyrene-divinylbenzene resin (NH 2 -PS). The physicochemical properties and structural features of the composite (NH 2 -PS@NH 2 -MIL(Fe)) were systematically characterized by SEM, EDS, XRD, FTIR, BET and XPS, confirming the successful immobilization of NH 2 -MIL(Fe) on the PS surface and the presence of abundant active sites. The adsorption behavior of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) on NH 2 -PS@NH 2 -MIL(Fe) was evaluated under various conditions, including pH, adsorbent dosage, and coexisting anions. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model, indicating a monolayer sorption with a maximum capacity of 250.6 mg·g −1 at pH 5.2 and thermodynamic analyses revealed that the adsorption was spontaneous and exothermic. Based on FTIR, XRD and XPS analyses, electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, π–π stacking, and metal–ligand coordination/Lewis acid-base interaction collectively governed the adsorption of SMX. Furthermore, the Fe(III) centers endowed NH 2 -PS@NH 2 -MIL(Fe) Fenton-like catalytic activity. With the addition of H 2 O 2 , over 95% of SMX was eliminated rapidly from water in a wide pH range. Based on the dual functions, this material can efficiently remove SMX from surface water samples. These results highlight the great potential of NH 2 -PS@NH 2 -MIL(Fe) for efficient removal of sulfonamide antibiotics. Download: Download high-res image (319KB) Download: Download full-size image

Tailoring structural and defect properties of hydrothermally-synthesized MIL-100(Fe) via mineralizers for improved xylenol orange adsorption

Yongwei Li,Shuting Fan,Zhihao Fang,Xiangru Zeng,Jinting Jiang,Fangfang Liu,Xuening Lun,Chengjie Li

A simple mineralizer regulation strategy is developed to tune the structure of hydrothermal MIL-100(Fe). • NaHCO 3 enhances the surface area of MIL-100 (Fe), affording superior XO adsorption performance. • Synergistic pore adsorption, hydrogen bonding, Fe 3+ coordination and π-π stacking enable efficient XO removal. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising crystalline porous solids, whose functional properties are highly dependent on their crystallinity, defect states and pore characteristics. In this work, hydrothermal synthesis was employed to prepare MIL-100(Fe) materials modulated by three different mineralizers: sodium carbonate, acetic acid, and sodium bicarbonate; mineralizer-free pristine MIL-100(Fe) was used as the reference sample. The addition of mineralizers effectively modulates the crystal structure and porosity of MIL-100(Fe). All mineralizer-modified samples exhibit larger specific surface area compared with the pristine material. Among them, NaHCO 3 -regulated MIL-100(Fe) achieves the best adsorption performance toward xylenol orange (XO), which originates from its optimized porous structure. Adsorption experimental data fit well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity calculated by the Langmuir model reaches 155.28 mg/g, which is competitive with many reported adsorbents. Synergistic adsorption mechanisms, including pore-filling effect, hydrogen bonding, Fe 3+ complexation and π-π stacking interactions, have been elucidated. This work presents a facile mineralizer-mediated strategy for tuning the solid-state structural features of MIL-100(Fe), offering experimental insights for the structure-performance optimization of Fe-based MOF solids. The Nitro-Modified NO2-MIL-53(Fe) Activating Persulfate for the Efficient Degradation of Tetracycline: Performance and Mechanism

Bai Yizhuo,Zhang Shiyu,Zhang Kaifan,Li Jiali,Zhang Jiehe,Hao Mingxu,Tao Haisheng

Nitro-functionalized NO 2 -MIL-53(Fe) was synthesized by modifying MIL-53(Fe) to enhance persulfate activation for the degradation of tetracycline (TCN). Comparative studies with NH 2 -MIL-53(Fe) and pristine MIL-53(Fe), it was found that NO 2 -MIL-53(Fe) is categorized as an ideal type I isotherm, without observable hysteresis loop. The introduction of nitro-group incorporation significantly increased specific surface area clocking in at 298.3 m 2 /g and an average pore diameter of 3.3 nm, created uniform micropores, and improved adsorption capacity. Structural characterization confirmed Fe(II) generation and electron transfer in NO 2 -MIL-53(Fe), enabling 82.1% TCN removal within 30 min. Radical (SO 4 ·− , ·OH, O 2 ·⁻ ) and non-radical ( 1 O 2 , charge transfer) pathways synergistically drove degradation, as evidenced by quenching experiments and EPR analysis. ESI-Q-TOF MS identified key intermediates, proposing plausible TCN degradation pathways. This study highlights the potential of nitro-functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in advanced oxidation processes, emphasizing their enhanced catalytic activity and performance mechanisms, and provides new ideas for the remediation of pollutants in water bodies. Effect of mineralizing agents on the adsorption performance of metal–organic framework MIL-100(Fe) towards chromium(VI)

Ying Fang,Jia Wen,Guangming Zeng,Feiyue Jia,Siyu Zhang,Zhilong Peng,Haibo Zhang

Four microporous MIL-100(Fe) metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) synthesized with or without mineralizing agents by hydrothermal method were evaluated for their characteristics, water stability and adsorption performance towards Cr(VI). In the study, we compared two traditional mineralizing agents (i.e. hydrofluoric acid (HF) and tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide (TMAOH)) and an environmental-friendly mineralizing agent sodium carbonate (Na 2 CO 3 ) for the likelihood of quality improvement of MIL-100(Fe). Results showed that MIL-100(Fe) prepared using Na 2 CO 3 mineralizing agent exhibited excellent physicochemical property and higher adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) than the others. The adsorption of Cr(VI) on MIL-100(Fe)_Na 2 CO 3 fitted better with Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo first-order kinetics model. Desorption and regeneration of used MIL-100(Fe)_Na 2 CO 3 were achieved using NaOH (0.01 M) with a high desorption efficiency of 73% in four hours. Based on the improved structural characteristics and excellent adsorption performance of MIL-100(Fe)_Na 2 CO 3 , using the environmental friendly and low-cost Na 2 CO 3 as mineralizing agent could be an alternative and preferred pathway in the preparation of MOFs materials.

Probing the Adsorption Characteristic of Metal–Organic Framework MIL-101 for Volatile Organic Compounds by Quartz Crystal Microbalance

Chan-Yuan Huang,Ming Song,Zhi-Yuan Gu,He-Fang Wang,Xiu-Ping Yan

As volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a major group of air pollutants, development of materials for efficient adsorption and removal of VOCs is of great significance in both environmental and analytical sciences. Here we report metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) MIL-101 for the effective adsorption of VOCs at atmospheric pressure. A simple device was designed for quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), and six VOCs with various functional groups and polarities, i.e., n-hexane, toluene, methanol, butanone, dichloromethane, and n-butylamine, were chosen as targets to probe the adsorption properties of MIL-101. The developed device allows measurement of the adsorption isotherms and monitoring of the dynamic process for the adsorption of VOCs on MOFs, and also provides a useful tool for characterization of MOFs. The adsorption isotherms of the VOCs on MIL-101 followed the Dubinin–Astakhov equation with the characteristic energy from 5.70 (methanol) to 9.13 kJ mol–1 (n-butylamine), Astakhov exponent from 0.50 (n-butylamine) to 3.03 (n-hexane), and the limiting adsorption capacity from 0.08 (n-hexane) to 12.8 (n-butylamine) mmol g–1. MIL-101 exhibited the strongest affinity to n-butylamine, but the weakest affinity to n-hexane. The determined Astakhov exponents and the isosteric heats of adsorption revealed the energetic heterogeneity of MIL-101. MIL-101 showed the most energetically homogeneous for n-hexane, but the most energetically heterogeneous for n-butylamine. The dynamic process of adsorption monitored by the QCM system demonstrated the distribution of the sorption sites within MIL-101. The metal sites within the MIL-101 were vital in adsorption process. MIL-101 gave much higher affinity and bigger adsorption capacity to VOCs than activated carbon, offering great potential for real applications in the adsorption and removal of VOCs.

Polyethylene glycol functionalized Fe3O4@MIL-101(Cr) for the efficient removal of heavy metals from Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort

Qingrong Han,Fei Liu,Chengjiu Wang,Zhentao Tang,Cheng Peng,Yuzhu Tan

In recent years, the quality and safety issues of Chinese medicinal herbs have received great attention worldwide. Thereinto, heavy metal contamination has been one of the most serious concerns. Compared to the wide research in the analysis of heavy metals in medicinal herbs, the studies on the removal of heavy metals are relatively limited. In this study, polyethylene glycol functionalized Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-101(Cr) (Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-101(Cr)@PEG) was designed and synthesized to remove heavy metals from the decoction of Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. The in-house fabricated Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-101(Cr)@PEG was characterized by a porous structure and a large specific surface area. Then, the efficiency of the material for the removal of five heavy metals was tested under optimal adsorption conditions. Meanwhile, the content of Senkyunolide A, Senkyunolide I, and Ferulic acid, the solid content, and the HPLC fingerprints similarity were used as the quality monitoring indicators of Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort decoction before and after the heavy metal removal. Results showed that the magnetic nanomaterial had excellent removal efficiency for As 5+ (81.4 %), Cd 2+ (88.19 %), and Pb 2+ (83.79 %) and certain removal efficiency for Ni 2+ (51.59 %) and Zn 2+ (55.4 %) under the spiked concentration of 50 μg/mL. The content of Senkyunolide A, Senkyunolide I, and Ferulic acid were decreased by less than 8.00 % after the removal of heavy metals. Besides, the loss rate of solid content was only 0.18 %, and the fingerprints similarity was over 99.9 %. The results indicated that Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-101(Cr)@PEG could efficiently and selectively remove heavy metals from Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort without affecting its effective components. Due to the advantages of low-cost, simple manipulation, and good efficiency, the material can be recommended for heavy metals removal from the aqueous solutions of medicinal herbs, providing a new and promising application for the removal of exogenous contaminants in medicinal herbs.
