Ethanol electro-oxidation on a carbon-supported Pt–Mo electrocatalyst: a study by pinhole on-line differential electrochemical mass spectrometry

Kyong–Mi Kim,Kyong–Sik Ju,Sung–Nam Pak

The ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) was studied on carbon-supported Pt and Pt–Mo electrocatalysts prepared by the formic acid reduction method following heat-treatment. The catalysts were physically characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The electrocatalytic activity of the Pt/C and Pt–Mo/C electrocatalysts for the EOR was investigated by potentiostatic and potentiodynamic measurements with pinhole on-line differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (PODEMS). The results show that the Pt–Mo/C electrocatalyst compared with Pt/C has higher ethanol oxidation efficiency and, acetaldehyde and acetic acid are majority products during the EOR under the given conditions. The CO2 current efficiencies (CCEs) on the Pt/C and Pt–Mo/C catalysts are 6.9% and 8.8% after calibration of the mass to charge signal m/z = 44, respectively, which reveals that the co-metal molybdenum produces more CO2 for ethanol electrooxidation and promotes the performance of the Pt-based anode catalyst.

Nonmetallic B synergistic Ni–Mo modified titanium dioxide nanotubes for enhanced photoelectrocatalytic hydrogen production: a combined experiments and theoretical calculations

Panpan Wang,Wenquan Cui,Huan Wang,Weijia An,Shuo Zhao,Hongxia Guo

Hydrogen production by photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) decomposition of water is a promising pathway for green hydrogen acquisition. The construction of highly efficient and low-cost HER catalyst is the key to the commercialization of hydrogen production. Ni–Mo–B/TNTs (titanium dioxide nanotubes) nanocatalysts were prepared by a one-step electrodeposition method. Due to the synergistic effect of the nonmetallic B and the transition metal Ni–Mo, the composite photoelectrode exhibited a low overpotential and high stability in an alkaline electrolyte. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that the ternary catalyst Ni–Mo–B/TNTs significantly optimized the adsorbed hydrogen intermediates, lowered the free-energy barriers of hydrogen adsorption, and facilitated the desorption of H 2 , which resulted in an enhancement of HER activity.

Yanlong Jia,Mengyan Wang,Bolun Li,Jiang Liu,Xueping Song,Min Wu,Yongjun Yin

To solve the long-term environmental pollution caused by black liquor and waste plastics, and achieve high-value utilization, the method about co-pyrolysis of black liquid solid and waste plastics (Polypropylene, Polyethylene) catalyzed by Mo-Ni/HZSM-5 to prepare high-quality bio-oil is studied. The results found that hydrocarbons increased from 14.92% to 42.03% as Polyethylene was co-pyrolyzed with BLS, and hydrocarbons increased from 14.92% to 41.75% as Polypropylene was co-pyrolyzed with BLS, adding plastics can significantly improve the hydrocarbons yield of black liquor. Mo-Ni/HZSM-5 acts as a hydro deoxidizer in the pyrolysis of black liquid and waste plastics, the total hydrocarbons of black liquid solid, black liquid solid& Polypropylene, black liquid solid & Polyethylene increased by 6%, 78%, and 45%, respectively. An appropriate increase of pyrolysis temperature can promote the co-pyrolysis of BLS with PP, and BLS with PE, and can increase the yield of hydrocarbons. Compared with black liquor’s pyrolysis, the yield of hydrocarbons can be increased by 59.65% and 24.52% as Polyethylene or Polypropylene is adapted to pyrolysis with black liquid solid, respectively, the high-quality bio-oil is obtained because of a large number of hydrocarbons and high hydrogen content.

3D coral-like Ni–Mo–S/NF bifunctional electrocatalyst for concurrent glycerol valorization to formate and energy-efficient H2 evolution

Yong Liu,Bohon Chen,Hanbin Nie,Shuanglin Gui,Jianping Deng

Electrolytic hydrogen production from water is a cost-effective renewable energy technology, but its development is severely constrained by high energy consumption, precious metal catalysts, and low-value products of anode. Given that inexpensive glycerol exhibits a significantly lower redox potential than water, this study developed a 3D coral-like nickel–molybdenum sulfur bifunctional nanocatalyst (Ni–Mo–S/NF) based on nickel foam, which served as both the anode and cathode in an alkaline glycerol electrolyte, enabling the simultaneous production of high-value formate at the anode and high-purity hydrogen at the cathode. Notably, in a two-electrode system, the alkaline glycerol electrolyzer required only 1.37 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2, which was 280 mV lower than that of an alkaline aqueous solution system, indicating an about 17% reduction in energy consumption compared to conventional water electrolysis. Meanwhile, this system reached a faradaic efficiency of 95.0% for formate production and 99.6% for hydrogen evolution. Benefiting from the outstanding performance of the noble-metal-free Ni–Mo–S/NF catalyst, the proposed technology for simultaneous formate and hydrogen production via glycerol electrooxidation offers a novel pathway for the green production of high-value chemicals and energy-saving hydrogen generation.

Regulating d–p Hybridization in Mo-Doped CoP Nanoflowers with Superwetting Surfaces for Water Splitting at 3000 mA cm–2

Wei An,Zeyang Liu,Tongjun Shen,Yizhang Du,Cun Huang,Boyuan Duan,Chunxia Wang,Guoyong Huang,Yiming Yan,Shengming Xu

To overcome the low current-density efficiency and long-term stability issues of industrial overall water splitting at ampere-level current density, a kind of superwetting Mo-doped nanoarray anchored on nickel foam (NF) (Mo-CoP/NC) with three-dimensional (3D) nanoflower structure is constructed. The incorporation of Mo species induces thermoneutral hydrogen adsorption free energy and creates favorable empty d-orbitals, which enhances the d–p hybridization of Co–O bonds, thereby accelerating the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics in alkaline media. The optimized Mo-CoP/NC exhibits exceptional electrocatalytic performance, requiring low overpotentials of 198 mV for HER and 384 mV for OER at a current density of 1000 mA cm–2 and achieving maintains robust operation in overall water splitting at 3000 mA cm–2. When employed as a bifunctional catalyst in an alkaline electrolyzer, a cell voltage of 1.87 V can be realized at 1000 mA cm–2 , outperforming commercial benchmarks. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that Mo doping optimizes hydrogen adsorption energy and reduces energy barriers for water dissociation. The superwetting surface ensures rapid gas bubble detachment and efficient active site regeneration, while N-doped carbon encapsulation endows long-term stability with negligible activity decay over 100 h of continuous operation.

Electrochemical preparation of Ni–Mo alloy catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction based on benzyl alcohol and ethylene glycol mixed solvents

Xinkuai He,Genfa Zeng,Jingjing Yang,Yiren Li,Luye Wu

The electrochemical reduction behavior in the preparation of Ni–Mo alloy catalysts using benzyl alcohol (BA) and ethylene glycol (EG) mixed solvents is studied via CV. These studies indicate that the mechanism of Ni–Mo co-deposition corresponds to a typical induced co-deposition mechanism, in which Ni 2+ can facilitate the Mo 6+ reduction while Mo 6+ can suppress the Ni 2+ reduction in the mixed solvents. SEM micrographs reveal that these Ni–Mo alloy catalysts exhibit dense structures composed of 'hillock'-shaped granules, and the size of these granules can be tuned by adjusting the Mo content. XRD pattern reveals that the Ni–Mo catalysts present a nanocrystalline structure with an average crystallite size of 48.7 nm. The experimental data demonstrate that increasing the Mo content in the Ni–Mo alloy catalyst from 5.36 to 11.62 wt% significantly enhances the HER performance. Particularly, the catalyst containing 11.62 wt% Mo demonstrates superior catalytic efficiency in 1 M KOH, requiring an overpotential of merely 58 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 .

Decorated TiO2 Nanoparticles with La and Ag Elements to Improve Photocatalytic Activity Under Visible Light for the Degradation of MO

Wang Qinghua,Gao Xuechuan,Zhang Renfei,Shen Beibei,Tan Zhibing,Li Zhao,Yu Shiyong

Visible-light photocatalyst of TiO2/La/Ag nanocomposites were successfully synthesized via the conventional sol–gel method and reducing agent of Ag+. The photocatalytic activities were evaluated by methyl orange (MO) degradation. They have remarkable photocatalytic activities compared to TiO2-Anatase, which is thanks to the separation of electron–hole pairs by Ag nanoparticles and lanthanum. The products were characterized by a series of techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and Uv-vis. The results show that spherical nanocomposites have been prepared with the size 300 nm and Ag nanoparticles (∼10 nm) are dispersed uniformly onto the surface of TiO2/La, which forms TiO2/La/Ag nanocomposites. TiO2/La/Ag nanocomposites have good absorption in the visible region (700 nm > > > 400 nm). The reasons are as follows: (1) the efficient separation of photogenerated electrons and holes of the photocatalysts on the surface of TiO2/La/Ag nanocomposites and (2) a wide visiblelight photoabsorption range (700 nm > > 400 nm). Therefore, this study may provide some new idea for the rational design and the facile synthesis of composite catalysts with a green, efficient pathway.

A fast approach to the synthesis of MO/CNT/Fe hybrid nanostructures built on MXene for enhanced Li-ion uptake

Wei Zheng,Peigen Zhang,Li Yang,Jian Chen,Wubian Tian,Yamei Zhang,ZhengMing Sun

We report herein a fast and scalable approach to the synthesis of MO/CNT/Fe (MCI) hybrid nanostructures via microwave irradiation of MXene under ambient condition. The effect of three arcing materials, CNT, graphite (C), and carbon fiber (C f ), on the growth of carbon nanotubes on MXene-derived metal oxides were investigated. The resulted MCI nanostructures were tested as anodes in LIBs , all exhibiting better electrochemical performance than that of pristine Ti 3 C 2 . Remarkably, MCI-C f delivered reversible capacities of 430 mA h g −1 and 175 mA h g −1 at 1 A g −1 and 10 A g −1 , respectively, which is much higher than that of commercial graphite at high rates. The findings in this work open new exciting opportunities to developing hybrid electrode materials with high specific capacity for energy conversion and storage.

Improvement of Jsc in a Cu2ZnSnS4 Solar Cell by Using a Thin Carbon Intermediate Layer at the Cu2ZnSnS4/Mo Interface

Fangzhou Zhou,Fangqin Zeng,Xu Liu,Fangyang Liu,Ning Song,Chang Yan,Aobo Pu,Jongsung Park,Kaiwen Sun,Xiaojing Hao

Back contact modification plays an important role in improving energy conversion efficiency of Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) thin film solar cells. In this paper, an ultrathin carbon layer is introduced on molybdenum (Mo)-coated soda lime glass (SLG) prior to the deposition of CZTS precursor to improve the back contact and therefore enhance CZTS solar cell efficiency. By introducing this layer, the short circuit current (Jsc) and device conversion efficiency increase for both nonvacuum (sol–gel) and vacuum (sputtering) methods. Specifically, for the sol–gel based process, Jsc increases from 13.60 to 16.96 mA/cm2 and efficiency from 4.47% to 5.52%, while for the sputtering based process, Jsc increases from 17.50 to 20.50 mA/cm2 and efficiency from 4.10% to 5.20%. Furthermore, introduction of this layer does not lead to any deterioration of either open circuit voltage (Voc) or fill factor (FF).

General synthesis of mixed-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures with hexagonal symmetry

Liyun Qin,Yan Lu,Qinliang Li,Zhendong Wang,Jianyu Wang,Binbing Tang,Wenda Zhou,Cailei Yuan,Qisheng Wang,Li Wang

The combination of two-dimensional (2D) materials with non-2D materials (quantum dots, nanowires and bulk materials), i.e. mixed-dimensional van der Waals (md-vdW) heterostructures endow 2D materials with remarkable electronics properties. However, it remains a big challenge to synthesize md-vdW heterostructures because of the difference of crystal symmetry between 2D and non-2D materials. Meanwhile, it is difficult to initiate the nucleation due to the lack of chemical active sites on chemical inert surfaces of 2D materials. Herein, we design a general chemical vapor deposition method for synthesizing a broad class of md-vdW heterostructures with well-aligned hexagonal symmetry including MoS2/FeS, MoS2/CoS, MoS2/MnS, MoS2/ZnS, Mo(SxSe1–x)2/ZnSxSe1–x, Mo(SxSe1–x)2/CdSxSe1–x. Combining with DFT calculation, we find that the hexagonal symmetry and the centered clusters of MoS2 and Mo(SxSe1–x)2 nanoflakes are two crucial factors to launch the hexagonally oriented growth and nucleation of non-2D materials on 2D materials. Our discovery opens an opportunity for the versatile hetero-integration of 2D materials and allows systematic investigation of physical properties in a wide variety of md-vdW heterostructures.

Fabrication of Zn-Ti layered double oxide nanosheets with ZnO/ZnTiO3 heterojunction for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of MO, RhB and MB

Quan Chen,Lunan Wu,Xiaoli Zhao,Xiu-Jie Yang

Zn-Ti layered double oxide (LDO) nanosheets were synthesized by a simple co-precipitation-calcination process for the enhanced photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO), rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene blue (MB). ZnTi-LDOs nanosheets present higher photocatalytic efficiency for MO, RhB and MB removal, which is 5.4, 4.4 and 6.7 times of that of Zn-Ti layered double hydroxide (LDH), respectively. The photocatalytic activity of synthesized ZnTi-LDOs is greatly affected by the mole ratio of Zn/Ti, calcination temperature and pH value. It is found that the formation of ZnO/ZnTiO 3 heterojunction in ZnTi-LDOs could effectively accelerate the rapid separation of charge carriers, and thus enhance the photocatalytic activity via enlarging the photoresponse range. The possible charge transfer mechanism for photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes by ZnTi-LDOs was proposed based on the active species test and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra. The results of active species trapping experiments showed that ‧OH, ‧O 2 − , h + , e − all had effect on the degradation of RhB , and ‧OH played a major role. This study provides a new insight for the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants from wastewater by ZnTi-LDOs.

Orbital hybridization and adsorption modulating in Mo/P co-doped Ni3S2 enables superior urea-assisted water electrolysis at industrial current density

Jie Sun,Nan Zhao,Jianjiao Xin,Miao Yu,Chunmei Lv,Yanqing Jiao,Xiuwen Wang

Rational designing a robust bifunctional electrocatalyst for urea-assisted water splitting (UWS) toward a carbon-neutral economy is imperative factor to address the energy-intensive challenges of sustainable hydrogen production at industrial current densities. In this study, a Mo/P co-doped Ni 3 S 2 one-dimensional nanoarray, decorated with two-dimensional nanosheets (MP-Ni 3 S 2 ), is synthesized using an in-situ growth method. The optimized MP-Ni 3 S 2 exhibits a significant advantage in the urea oxidation reaction (UOR), achieving much lower potentials (1.346 V at 100 mA cm −2 and 1.505 V at 1000 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M + 0.33 M urea) comparable to the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which requires 302 mV and 445 mV at the same current densities. The MP-Ni 3 S 2 ||MP-Ni 3 S 2 electrolyzer reduces the cell voltage from 2.146 V for overall water splitting (OWS) to 1.856 V for UWS at 500 mA cm −2 , surpassing most reported catalysts. Theocratical calculations demonstrate that Mo and P doping in Ni 3 S 2 , through the hybridization of Mo/Ni 3d and N/O 2p orbitals, effectively accelerates UOR kinetics by lowering the energy barrier in dehydrogenation and N-N coupling processes, while P doping optimizes the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption (ΔG H* ) to enhance HER activity, thereby synergistically improving overall performance. These findings offer a viable strategy for the development of energy-saving hydrogen production.
