Cr4+-activated phosphors are important candidate materials for NIR-II light sources, but providing a suitable lattice coordination environment for Cr4+ and achieving long wavelength broadband emission remains a challenge. In this work, a series of Cr4+-activated ABO2 (A = Li, Na; B = Al, Ga) phosphors were successfully prepared. Due to the presence of only tetrahedral coordination structures available for Cr4+ to occupy in the matrix crystal ABO2, the valence state and luminescence stability of Cr4+ are effectively guaranteed. Through the cation substitution design of A-site (Na → Li) and B-site (Ga → Al), the [BO4] tetrahedron is distorted and expanded, which degrades the symmetry of the Cr4+ coordination crystal field. Consequently, the central wavelength of the Cr4+ emission peak is tuned from 1280 to 1430 nm, and the fwhm is significantly extended from 257 to 355 nm. Thebroadband NIR-II light sources constructed with LiAlO2: 0.03Cr4+ and NaGaO2: 0.03Cr4+ phosphors verify their important potential applications in nondestructive testing and biological imaging.

In this work, a flexible and self-supporting P-doped carbon cloth (FPCC), which is composed of interwoven mesh of hollow microtubules with porous carbon walls, is prepared via a vacuum-sealed doping technology by employing the commercially available cotton cloth as sustainable and scalable raw material. When directly used as binder-free anode for sodium-ion batteries, the as-prepared FPCC delivers superior Na-storage properties in terms of specific capacity up to 242.4 mA h g–1, high initial Coulombic efficiency of ∼72%, excellent rate capabilities (e.g., 123.1 mA h g–1 at a high current of 1 A g–1), and long-term cycle life (e.g., ∼88% capacity retention after even 600 cycles). All these electrochemical data are better than the undoped carbon cloth control, demonstrating the significance of P-doping to enhance the Na-storage properties of cotton-derived carbon anode. Furthermore, the technologies of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and galvanostatic intermittent titration technique are implemented to disclose the decrease of charge transfer resistance and improvement of Na-migration kinetics, respectively.

The practical uses of magnesium-ion batteries are hindered by their poor rate capability and fast capacity decay. Moreover, traditional sodium ion batteries suffer from serious safety problems resulting from the sodium dendrites formed on the anode. In order to circumvent these problems, we designed a highly reversible Na+/Mg2+ hybrid-ion battery composed of a metallic Mg anode, a TiS2 derived titanium sulfide cathode and a 1.0 M NaBH4 + 0.1 M Mg(BH4)2/diglyme hybrid electrolyte. The battery showed remarkable electrochemical performances with a large discharge capacity (200 mA h g−1 at the 1C rate), high rate capability (75 mA h g−1 at the 20C rate) and long cycle life (90% capacity retention after 3000 cycles). Moreover, it exhibited excellent safety properties due to dendrite-free Mg deposition of the anode and the high thermal stability of the cathode. These merits demonstrate the great potential of the reported Na+/Mg2+ hybrid-ion battery for large-scale energy storage.

Plant oil–inspired 3D flower-like Zn 3 V 3 O 8 nanospheres coupled with nitrogen doped (N-doped) carbon synthesized via the microemulsion/calcination strategy are used as anodes for lithium-/sodium-ion batteries (LIBs/SIBs). The synergistic interaction between the unique 3D flower-like structure and the existence of N-doped carbon can provide enough space to buffer volume expansion during the Li + /Na + intake/outlet process and enhance conductivity, respectively. Thus, the material delivers progressive electrochemical performance. Specifically, the Zn 3 V 3 O 8 nanospheres exhibit a reversible specific capacity of 1140.6 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles for LIBs and 113.0 mAh g −1 after 400 cycles for SIBs at a current density of 200 mA g −1 . Furthermore, the Zn 3 V 3 O 8 nanospheres electrode owns rate capability for LIBs such as 933.8, 847.9, 780.8, and 664.1 mAh g −1 at elevated current densities of 200, 400, 800, and 1600 mAh g −1 , respectively. In addition, it delivers reversible capacities of 207.5, 119.2, 74.1, and 42.7 mAh g −1 at 100, 200, 500, 1000, and 2000 mA g −1 for SIBs, respectively.

High-performance cathodes are required for advancing sodium-ion batteries, where both the Na content and transition metal (TM) composition significantly influence electrochemical performance. This work presents a rational design strategy for P2-type layered oxides, integrating increased Na content, reduced Ni/Fe concentration, balanced Mn3+/Mn4+ ratio, and Li incorporation. Guided by this approach, a series of high-Na-content P2-type cathodes was developed, and the key phase formation principles for Fe-containing compositions were revealed. Correlation analysis suggested an optimal composition, Na0.8Li0.07Fe0.12Ni0.11Mn0.7O2, featuring ultralow Ni content, demonstrated enhanced structural stability and Na+ diffusion kinetics. In situ XRD analysis confirmed exceptional structural resilience during cycling, exhibiting minimal lattice strain (1.5% volume variation) attributed to sufficient Na at the Naf site, mitigating TM layer gliding. Electrochemical evaluation revealed outstanding performance: a high reversible capacity (125.8 mAh g–1 at 0.1 C, 2.5–4.5 V), excellent cycling stability (81.6% capacity retention after 500 cycles at 1 C), and superior energy density in full cells (268.1 Wh kg–1). It also exhibited remarkable air stability, retaining structural integrity and 96.9% initial capacity after 10 days of air exposure. This design-oriented strategy not only clarifies the intrinsic phase formation rules but also establishes a paradigm for compositionally guided cathode engineering, bridging fundamental understanding and practical material design.

The development of cobalt-free P2-Na2/3Ni1/3Mn2/3O2cathodes is hampered by poor electrochemical performance, resulting from structural instability during high-voltage cycling. Herein, Li+and F−ions are introduced simultaneously via a simple sol–gel method. The F not only enters the lattice but forms chemically stable NaF on the surface. The modified electrode delivered significantly better electrochemical performance than the pristine one, including much-enhanced capacity retention (64% vs. 36%, 100 cycles) at 0.5 C and a four-time higher capacity output at 10 C. The ex situ XRD and in situ Raman analysis revealed cyclability enhancement mechanisms in terms of inhibiting the P2–O2 phase transition and Na+/vacancy ordering. The conductivity measurements (based on AC impedance and DC polarization) and GITT analysis proved, on both bulk material and electrode levels, that Na+conduction and, thus, rate performance is notably promoted by doping. The individual contribution of Li and F to the overall performance improvement was also discussed. Furthermore, a solid-state sodium-metal battery was successfully demonstrated with the modified cathode. The above results verify that Li+/F−incorporation can enable enhancements in both cyclability and rate capability of the P2-Na2/3Ni1/3Mn2/3O2cathodes and are expected to provide a new perspective for the rational design of high-performance layered oxide cathode materials for progressive sodium-ion batteries.

MoS2 material is considered as a promising anode material candidate in Na-ion batteries (NIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity and layered structure. However, MoS2 nanosheets usually tend to restack or aggregate during the synthesis and cycling process, which makes the advantages of the separated nanosheets disappear. Here, we present a PVP-assisted synthesis for growing long hierarchical MoS2 nanofibers with a length up to 74.5 μm, which were further assembled from intercrossed curly nanosheets with expanded (002) interlayer spacings in the range of 0.62 nm to 1.14 nm. Such architectural design simultaneously combines multiple-scale structural features that are desired for Na-ion storage. On the one hand, the nanosheets can provide a large surface area which is in contact with the electrolyte, a short Na-ion diffusion pathway from the lateral side and facile Na-ion insertion and extraction through the expanded (002) interlayer; on the other hand, the hierarchical MoS2 nanofibers possess a one dimensional structure and a suitable amount of carbon, which can both serve as an electrical highway and prevent them from restacking, resulting in an enhanced electrochemical performance. When used as an anode in NIBs, they demonstrated excellent cycling performance (537 mA h g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 after 200 cycles, and 370 mA h g−1 at 2 A g−1 over 200 cycles) and outstanding rate capability (329 mA h g−1 at 10 A g−1).

Protonation and alkali-metal cation adduction are the most important ionization processes in soft-ionization mass spectrometry. Studies on the fragmentation mechanism of protonated and alkali-metal-cationized compounds in tandem mass spectrometry are essential and helpful for structural analysis. In some cases, it was often observed that a compound attached by different alkali-metal cations (or proton) exhibits similar fragmentation patterns but the relative abundances of product ions are different. This difference was considered to derive from the different electrostatic interactions of alkali-metal cations (or the bonded effect of proton) with the analyte. The alkali-metal cation with a smaller ionic radius shows stronger electrostatic interaction with the molecule because of its higher charge density. In addition, the bonded effect of the proton is stronger than the electrostatic interaction of the alkali-metal cation. In the present study, which used McLafferty-type rearrangements of even-electron ions ([M + Cat] + , Cat = H, Li, Na, K) as model reactions, the effect of cation size in mass spectrometric fragmentation reactions is highlighted. These considerations were also successfully applied to interpret the similar but distinct fragmentation behavior of proton and alkali-metal cation adducts of a synthetic compound (2-(acetamido(phenyl)methyl)-3-oxobutanoate) and a drug (entecavir).

Carbon materials derived from metal-organic frameworks have attracted increasing attention as anodes for energy storage. In this study, Fe, Ni-doped ZIF-8 is carbonized at high temperature to obtain bimetallic Fe and Ni modified tension -relaxed carbon (FeNi@trC). Fe and Ni have opposite structural modification effects when the metal ions are doped into the ZIF-8 dodecahedron. The obtained carbon material maintains the regular dodecahedron morphology, which means the relaxation of tension and strong thermal stability during annealing. Moreover, the presence of nickel enhances the carbonization degree and electrochemical stability of FeNi@trC, while the calcination of the tensive ZIF-8 precursor offers more defect sites. The discharge capacities of FeNi@trC materials are stable at 182.9 mAh·g−1 and 567.9 mAh·g−1 for sodium-ion batterie (SIB) and lithium-ion batterie (LIB) at 0.05 A·g−1. Compared with the current density of 0.05 A·g−1, the discharge capacity of SIB and LIB attenuates by 29.4% and 55.9% at 1 A·g−1, respectively, and the FeNi@trC shows good performance stability in the following cycles.

The properties of Pickering emulsions is affected by many factors, one of the most typical of which is the ionic environment. Existing studies have mainly focused on the effect of ions in the continuous phase on oil-in-water Pickering emulsions, and usually only single species of ions are studied. The water-in-oil Pickering emulsions are commonly used to encapsulate a variety of water-soluble functional substances, which often contain various of ions. Therefore, it is necessary to study the effect of ions in the internal phase on the properties of inverse Pickering emulsions. The inverse Pickering emulsions with an average droplet size of 100 μm were prepared using hydrophobized calcium carbonate particles. Subsequently, Na+ and Ca2+ were introduced into the internal phase to investigate their effects on the emulsion. The results show that the presence of Na+ can aggravate droplet coalescence, and Ca2+ can cause severe damage to the emulsions and even lead to phase inversion. It was speculated that Na+ can weaken the surface charge of particles by compressing the electric double layer, resulting in lower electrostatic repulsion between particles, thus changing the dispersion state of the particles and ultimately affecting the properties of the emulsion. And Ca2+ can combine with and release stearate from the particle surface through chemical reactions, thus changing the wettability of the particles and resulting in breaking and phase inversion of the emulsions. The present work is informative for the setting of the phase composition and the prediction of stability during the application of inverse Pickering emulsions.

As potential candidates, metal sulfides display strong storage abilities but suffer from serious volume swelling and polysulfide shuttling. Especially rich-sulfur materials, inferior reversible conversion reactions (from MS 2 to MS with S) can bring about major formation of sulfur. Herein, cubic-like Sn–Co–S materials with SnO 2 as catalyst are designed with various dimensional carbon. The as-resulted samples display uniform distributed particle size (≈5 µm), while cross-linked Sn–Co–S@carbon is successfully formed due to its rich surficial groups. Significantly, the formation of chemical bonds about Sn/Co–S–C is noted, facilitating ions/e-transfering and architecture enhancing. Meanwhile, owing to the endothermic effect of carbon, SnO 2 finally resulted, effectively limiting the so-called “shuttling effect” of polysulfide. Utilized as sodium-ion anodes, the optimized samples can deliver a capacity of 490 mAh g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 and ≈400 mAh g −1 above at 5.0 A g −1 . Assisted by the detailed kinetic analysis, it can be confirmed that the improvements of surface-controlling behaviors mainly come from the interfacial chemical bonds and strong-polar metal-oxides bonds. This work is expected to illustrate the roles of interfacial design and metal oxide catalysts for advanced energy storage materials.

Na-ion batteries are considered as promising battery systems for large-scale energy storage. Although Na-ion batteries exhibit enhanced low-temperature cycling performance compared with lithium-ion batteries, there is still a great challenge to overcome for practical low-temperature applications. In this work, we propose a low-performance Na-ion battery composed of FeNi co-doped Mn-based Prussian cathode (FeNi-MnHCF) and a low-concentration electrolyte (0.5 mol L −1 ) containing a small amount of 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl acetate (ETFA, 1 wt%). The introduction of ETFA could decrease the viscosity , increase ionic conductivity and change the solvation structure of the electrolyte at low temperature. ETFA could also participate in constructing a uniform, stable, and Na-ion conductive CEI layer, enabling rapid Na-ion transport and effective protection of FeNi-MnHCF. The cells with the ETFA-contained electrolyte and FeNi-MnHCF cathode exhibit excellent rate capability and long cycle life at low temperature. When being cycled at −20 °C, the cell with ETFA could retain 92.1 % of the capacity after 1120 cycles at 1 C. The cell could also show stable cycling after overcharge to 4.8 V or overdischarge to 1.2 V at −20 °C. This work sheds light on the design of long-life and robust Na-ion batteries for sustainable energy storage at low temperature.
