Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has gained attention as a sensitive technique for the detection of pesticide residues. However, constructing homogeneous, stable, and large-volume “hot spots” is a challenge. In this study, D-T-CNFs@Ag SERS substrates were fabricated by decorating a flexible dialdehyde TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibril (D-T-CNF) film with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Carboxylate groups and aldehyde groups on cellulose nanofibrils were used as the growth sites for AgNPs and the main reducing agents for forming three-dimensional “hot spots”, respectively. D-T-CNFs provided protection and immobilization for the AgNPs, allowing SERS substrates to withstand intense ultrasonic treatment, and had a shelf life of over 60 days. In addition, thiram and thiabendazole could be detected at a concentration as low as 10–9 M. The D-T-CNFs@Ag SERS substrate could be used to test thiram on the surface of apples, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.047 ng/cm2, realizing the integration of collection and detection.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensors are ideal for point-of-care testing (POCT) of disease markers; the key to practical applications lies in their quantitative detection capabilities and high sensitivity. In this study, We propose a simple method to develop a high-sensitivity composite SERS substrate using physical vapor deposition (PVD) technology. This SERS substrate, utilizing 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) as the detection molecule, demonstrated a high enhancement factor (~ 10 6 ) and a low detection limit (10 −10 M). The corrected linearity problem achieved good linear correlation ( R 2 = 0.988) by using 4-ATP. In the trace detection process of creatinine, when creatinine is dissolved in goat serum solution diluted 1000 times, there is still a clear SERS signal at the characteristic peak when the concentration is only 10 −4 g/l, further demonstrating the potential of SERS sensors in the detection of renal disease biomarkers.

In this paper, we propose a composite nano-microstructure comprising Ti3C2 and nanogold as a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-active substrate for the highly sensitive sensing of amine gases. The adsorption performance of Ti3C2 was tested by a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor. Excellent adsorption ability of Ti3C2 was observed for aniline, phenylenediamine, and diethylamine, with adsorption amounts exceeding 2210, 1740, and 970 ng cm−2, respectively. The synergistic effect of the electromagnetic properties of Ti3C2 and nano-Au in the Ti3C2/nano-Au composite nanostructures was verified by finite-difference time-domain simulation. Partial chemical enhancement between Ti3C2 and aniline was verified by photocurrent tests. To achieve assay specificity, mercaptoacetaldehyde (MA) was adopted as a recognition probe. The Schiff base reaction between aldehyde groups and amino groups produces the –CN– bond, with the Raman characteristic peak at 1635 cm−1, enabling precise amine identification with the SERS chip. To obtain the Ti3C2/nano-Au@MA SERS sensing chip, nano Au was deposited on an indium tin oxide substrate using the chronoamperometric method, followed by nano-Au aldolization modification through Au-SH interactions and the spin-coating of a Ti3C2 film layer. Due to the high affinity of Ti3C2 for amine molecules and the low SERS background signal of MA and Ti3C2, the SERS spectra could be used for ultra-sensitive detection of amines. Three amine gases, i.e. aniline, p-phenylenediamine, and diethylamine, were detected quantitatively using the intensity ratiometric method on the functionalized Ti3C2/nano-Au@MA SERS sensor chip. The detection limits were 1, 1, and 20 parts per billion, respectively. By identifying the characteristic fingerprint peaks and comparing the relative intensity of the –CN– characteristic peak, quantitative analysis of the components of aniline and p-phenylenediamine mixed gas was accomplished. These findings demonstrate that the Ti3C2/nano-Au@MA SERS sensor chip offers a promising approach for the detection of amine gas molecules and holds potential for applications in environmental monitoring, disease diagnosis, and chemical analysis.

Nowadays, trace detection of thiram is in urgent demand due to its widespread application in agriculture and significant harmful effects on public health. In this work, a three-dimensional (3D) sea cucumber-like flexible porous surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate composed of a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane, ZnO nanorods, gold films, and Ag nanoparticles (Ag/Au/ZnO/P) has been established for the highly sensitive detection of thiram. The substrate takes advantage of the 3D morphology of the Ag/Au/ZnO system on a flexible porous PVDF membrane to produce abundant plasmonic hot spots. Meanwhile, the employment of an AgNPs/Au shell system combined the benefits of both gold and silver metals, thus guaranteeing stable and sensitive detection. With 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) as a probe molecule, the Ag/Au/ZnO/P substrate exhibited excellent linear detection in the range of 10−11–10−5 M, with a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.99 and an enhancement cofactor of 7.09 × 107. The substrate exhibited excellent uniformity with a related standard deviation (RSD) value of 3.82% and demonstrated high stability during a 15 d-storage test. In addition, the substrate could detect thiram in an aqueous solution at concentrations as low as 10−10 M with excellent selectivity. Meanwhile, thiram on the surface of apple peel could be easily detected by the Ag/Au/ZnO/P substrate with the “paste-and-peel” method in less than 10 s, and the detection limit could be as low as 0.48 ng cm−2. Overall, the remarkable performance of the Ag/Au/ZnO/P SERS substrate demonstrated its great potential for the environmental monitoring of thiram.

This study presents the design of a Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate, COF@Ag, for the sensitive detection of Amoxicillin (AMX) in lake water and honey. Furthermore, the study investigates the role of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) in SERS detection. The characterization results demonstrate the capability of COFs to efficiently enrich Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs), resulting in a more concentrated distribution of hotspots and an enhanced electromagnetic field on the substrate. By employing density functional theory (DFT) simulation, the frontier electronic orbitals of COFs and AMX were analyzed, and the chemical bonds and weak interactions in the system were examined using the Interaction Region Indicator (IRI) method to propose potential enhancement mechanisms. In aqueous solutions, the linear range is 1 μg/L-30 μg/L, with a limit of detection (LOD) 0.279 μg/L. In lake water, the linear range span from 100 μg/L to 500 μg/L, with a detection limit of 8.244 μg/L. For honey, the linear range extend from 20 ng/g to 100 ng/g, with a detection limit of 2.917 ng/g. This method holds key significance in facilitating the rapid detection of amoxicillin and advancing the application of COFs in SERS.

The ubiquity of plastic products has led to an increased exposure to micro and nano plastics across diverse environments, presenting a novel class of pollutants with substantial health implications. Emerging research indicates their capacity to infiltrate human organs, posing risks of tissue damage and carcinogenesis. Given the prevalent consumption of beverages as a primary vector for these plastics' entry into the human system, there is an imperative need for the advancement of precise detection methodologies in liquids. In this study, we introduce a substrate comprising a Nickel Oxide (NiO) nanosheet array decorated with Silver Nanoparticles (AgNPs) for the Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) analysis of micro//nano plastics. This configuration, leveraging a unique nanowell architecture alongside silver plasmonic enhancement, demonstrates unparalleled sensitivity and repeatability in signal, facilitating the accurate quantification of these contaminants. Through the application of a portable Raman apparatus, this study successfully identifies prevalent micro/nano plastics including polystyrene (PS), polyethylene (PE), and polypropylene (PP), achieving detection sensitivities of 5 μg/mL, 25 μg/mL, and 25 μg/mL, respectively. Moreover, the substrate's efficacy extends to the detection of PS within commonly consumed beverages such as water, milk, and liquor with sensitivities of 25 μg/mL, 50 μg/mL, and 50 μg/mL, respectively. These findings highlight the substrate's potential as an expedient and effective sensor for the real-time monitoring of micro/nano plastic pollutants.

Nanoplastics present a significant hazard to both the environment and human health. However, the development of rapid and sensitive analysis techniques for nanoplastics is limited by their small size, lack of specificity, and low concentrations. In this study, a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) chessboard substrate was introduced as a multi-channel platform for the pre-concentration and detection of nanoplastics, achieved by polydomain aggregating silver nanoparticles (PASN) on a hydrophilic and a punched hydrophobic PVDF combined filter membrane. Through a straightforward suction filtration process, nanoplastics were captured by the PASN gap in a single step for subsequent SERS detection, while excess moisture was promptly eliminated from the filter membrane. The PASN-based SERS chessboard substrate, benefiting from the enhanced electromagnetic (EM) field, effectively discriminated polystyrene (PS) nanoplastics ranging in size from 30 nm to 1000 nm. Furthermore, this substrate demonstrated favorable repeatability (RSD of 8.6 %), high sensitivity with a detection limit of 0.001 mg/mL for 100 nm of PS nanoplastics, and broad linear detection ranges spanning from 0.001 to 0.5 mg/mL (R 2 = 0.9916). Additionally, the SERS chessboard substrate enabled quantitative analysis of nanoplastics spiked in tap and lake water samples. Notably, the entire pre-concentration and detection procedure required only 3 μL of sample and could be completed within 1 min. With the accessibility of portable detection instruments and the ability to prepare substrates on demand, the PASN-based SERS chessboard substrate is anticipated to facilitate the establishment of a comprehensive global nanoplastics map.

Plasmonic dimers have a very wide range of applications as a unique platform for studying the fundamental effects of plasmonics. Most dimer structures are prepared by chemical methods and direct-writing methods, such as coupling agents and lithography. These methods are often complex and expensive. Here, we prepared Au nanospheres (AuNSs) by layer-by-layer (LBL) deposition, used polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) as a spacer layer, and then annealed the deposited AuNSs to orient the assembly and integrate them together. In this paper, suitable PMMA spin coating conditions and optimal annealing temperatures were explored, and large-scale AuNSs-PMMA-AuNSs(NSs-P-NSs) composed of vertical Au nanosphere dimers were prepared successfully. The detection limits of this substrate can reach 4 × 10−12 M/L and 4 × 10−10 M/L for Rhodamine 6 G (R6G) and Crystal Violet (CV), respectively, demonstrating excellent Raman activity. In addition, the sensitivity of detecting aspartame (APM) is 0.015625 g/L. This method is not only simple to operate but also allows the preparation of a large-scale uniform substrate with excellent detection capabilities.

Magnetic nano-detection systems for monitoring symptoms subsequent to cancer treatment have drawn significant attention within the domain of therapeutic diagnostics. However, the weak affinity of target analytes with traditional magnetic SERS substrate and complex matrix interference impede the achievement of high sensitivity and precision necessary for practical H 2 O 2 applications. Herein, Based on Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @Au seed-MBN (4-mercaptobenzoonitrile) @Au (FSAMA) substrate and the electro-driven adsorption strategy, this study develops a SERS sensor for quantification of H 2 O 2 residue. The magnetic core can improve cytocompatibility and reduce cytotoxicity with the inorganic SiO 2 layer. Au@DTNB (5,5'-Dithiobis-(2-nitrobenzoic acid)) @Ag molecules can be adsorbed onto the “hotspot” region of FSAMA substrate to obtain enhanced SERS signals. Though the enhanced second-harmonic generation (SHG) effect, the H 2 O 2 oxidizes the Ag layer of FSAMA-Au@DTNB@Ag to Ag (I), which will significantly cause changes the SERS signal, which is improved by 2-3 orders of magnitude. The incorporation of inner-layer labeling molecules within the Au NPs enhances the stability of SERS signal output while maintaining excellent Raman signal contrast for H₂O₂ detection. In summary, the FSAMA-SERS sensing system developed for detecting H₂O₂ levels may serve as a promising platform for diagnostic and prognostic monitoring, applicable across a wide range of complex serum samples.

The sensitivity of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) highly depends on the number of hotspots under laser spot and the number of analyte molecules near hotspots. Thus, a SERS substrate was constructed by assembling Ag nanocubes on a paper, which was previously modified with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) through in-situ polymerization. On the prepared substrate, the density of hotspots and analyte molecules near the hotspots are increased by the high surface area of paper and the modification of MIP. Malachite green (MG) is a toxic and prohibited drug that is very polluted to the environment, so monitor of trace MG is vital in complex environment. The minimum detectable concentration of MG molecules on the paper-based SERS substrate is 3.65 × 10 −3 ng/mL. The relative standard deviation (RSD) is 8.58 % and the EF is approximate to 1.78 × 10 7 . In addition, MG molecules can be accurately detected in the presence of interfering molecules, the imprinting factors of MG is up to 1.69. Furthermore, the substrate can be used for the detection of MG in shrimp leach liquor, and its minimum detectable concentration is as low as 0.365 ng/mL, the RSD is 7.49 %. The above results indicate that this substrate can be used for detecting trace molecule in complex samples.

Understanding atomic orbital-level interactions at material-molecule interfaces is crucial for advancing surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). While conventional mechanisms focus on electromagnetic effects or interfacial charge transfer (CT), the role of orbital hybridization in multimetallic systems remains underexplored. Here, a d-band-mediated CT mechanism is proposed through the engineering high-entropy alloy aerogels (HEAAs). A face-centered cubic AuAgCuMnInBi HEAAs synthesized via one-step coreduction achieves ultrasensitive SERS detection of crystal violet. Density of states analyses reveal that Mn-3d orbitals bridge electron reservoirs (Au/Ag/Cu) and In/Bi-p orbitals, enabling efficient charge delocalization. Voltage-tunable SERS signals in MnInBi subsystems confirm d-band-dependent CT enhancement. Beyond molecular sensing, this mechanism allows direct capture of reactive intermediates (OH·, O 2 · – ) and 5 n M uranium detection, bridging SERS enhancement dynamics with catalytic pathway elucidation. These findings establish d-band engineering as a paradigm for designing multifunctional SERS substrates, bridging atomic-scale electronic interactions with ultrasensitive sensing and catalytic mechanism elucidation.

Although surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has become a powerful analytical technique for ultrasensitive molecular detection, it still faces challenges including instability, unrepeatability, and non-recyclable. The rational design and fabrication of SERS substrates that are simultaneously stable, reproducible, and recyclable remains a critical yet unmet need. Here, we present a flexible polyimide-silver (PI/Ag) nanofiber-based SERS platform, synthesized via electrospinning and in-situ reduction techniques. The spatial distribution and density of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were precisely regulated by tuning the type and concentration of reducing agents, which effectively modulated the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect to optimize SERS performance. Among the tested formulations, the PI/Ag-NB substrate—prepared using NaBH 4 as the reducing agent—exhibited the most favorable nanoparticle dispersion and the strongest SERS activity. Using 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) as a probe molecule, the PI/Ag-NB substrate achieved a maximum enhancement factor (EF) of 1.17 × 10 7 . Beyond its high sensitivity, the substrate demonstrated broad spectral responsiveness, enabling the reliable detection of diverse analytes such as methylene blue (MB), methyl violet (CV), Congo red (CR) and malachite green (MG). To further validate its practical utility, long-term stability, and recyclability, the substrate was employed for the detection of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) pesticide residues both in aqueous solutions and soil extracts. Notably, the substrate stored for 30 days maintained performance over 10 consecutive detection cycles, their robustness and reproducibility. The platform achieved a measured detection limit of 10 −10 M, with a theoretical limit reaching as low as 3.12 × 10 −11 M, highlighting the ultrasensitive detection capability of the substrate. Collectively, these findings establish PI/Ag-NB nanofibers as a versatile and high-performance SERS platform, paving the way for their practical applications in environmental monitoring, food safety, and chemical sensing.
