In this work, we proposed a fluorescence conversion layer with polarization characteristics to enhance UV polarization detection for the first time. To achieve this goal, the colloidal lead halide CsPbBr3 nanowires (NWs) with appropriate lengths were synthesized by the method of ultrasonication synthesis assisted by the addition of hydrobromic acid (HBr) ligands. By adding HBr, the properties of synthesized NWs are improved, and due to the controllable perovskite-stretched NWs, polymer composite films were fabricated, which can generate photoluminescence (PL) with strong polarization. The optimized stretched composite film can achieve a polarization degree of 0.42 and dichroism ratio (I∥/I⊥) of 2.49 at 520 nm. Based on this film, an imaging system with polarization-selective properties and efficient UV spectral conversion was developed. The spectrum conversion of 266 to 520 nm luminescence wavelength was realized and sensitive to the polarization of incoming 266 nm UV light. The experimental results also showed that the response after spectral conversion is greatly improved, and different responsivities can correspond to different polarization states. This imaging system overcomes the insufficiency of the conventional charge coupled device (CCD), which makes it difficult to receive the optical signal for high-quality UV imaging. The use of light conversion films with polarization characteristics for polarized UV imaging is of great significance for improving the detection of solar-blind UV bands and the recognition of military targets.

Addressing the public health challenge posed by skin cancer is the urgent necessity to devise bending and wearable ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors capable of monitoring the carcinogenic UV in everyday life on a real-time basis and with individualized coverage. This paper proposes a new plasmonic enhancement scheme using platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs)-decorated on the one-dimensional (1D) CsCu$_2$I$_3$ single-crystals (SCs) to high-performance and highly stable UV photodetection. Surface-coated PtNPs provide a plasmonic response with a maximum at 341 nm, which is essentially in coincidence with the absorption edge of CsCu$_2$I$_3$. This alignment contributes to a considerable increase in the light harvesting and carrier generation/separation efficiency. The optimized PtNPs@CsCu$_2$I$_3$ photodetector is characterized by outstanding performance under 340 nm illumination at 5 V bias, achieving a responsivity of 26.32 A/W, a specific detectivity of \(5.97 \times 10^{13}\) Jones, and ultrafast sub-millisecond response times (510 \(\mu\)s rise / 619 \(\mu\)s decay). Moreover, the detector is very environmentally stable, and the performance of the detector remains more than 95\% of the original 90 days ambient air storage in the absence of encapsulation. In a practical demonstration for sunscreen UV-blocking assessment, the device shows high linearity (\(R^2 = 0.99\)) and reliable accuracy in the different sunscreens with varying strength factors. This contribution does more than merely offer an efficient pathway of achieving high-performance copper-based perovskite photodetectors, although their possible applications in the real-world may be wearable health-commerce tags, environmental sensors, and optical communication structures.

Stable copper-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (Cu-EDTA) poses significant challenges for simultaneous ligand degradation and metal recovery. A self-driven ultraviolet/periodate (UV/PI) process that enables efficient decomplexation of Cu-EDTA coupled with in situ copper recovery was developed. This process achieved 94.50% decomplexation and 68.94% copper recovery via precipitation within 90 min without pH adjustment. Mechanistic investigations revealed that the UV/PI process generates reactive iodine species (IO3•) and singlet oxygen (1O2), and Cu(I)/Cu(II)/Cu(III) redox cycling, driving stepwise decarboxylation of EDTA and Cu2+ release. Consequently, proton consumption during PI activation and IO3– formation induces a gradual pH increase to ∼7.5, triggering the precipitation of released Cu2+. This intrinsic coupling of oxidative decomplexation and pH-driven precipitation enables a self-sustained pathway for simultaneous ligand removal and Cu recovery. While the electrical energy per order (EEO) is comparable to that of UV/H2O2, the UV/PI process exhibits markedly lower energy consumption per mass of copper recovered than other UV/oxidant processes. Moreover, the UV/PI process further exhibits strong resistance to water matrix interference, effective performance in real electroplating wastewater, and broad applicability toward various heavy metal complexes. This study provides a mechanistically informed and environmentally benign strategy for the treatment of metal-EDTA-containing wastewater.

Novel double perovskite Cs 2 Na 0.7 Ag 0.3 InCl 6 : Mn 2+ material is developed. • Tunable dual emission covering full visible light range is fulfilled. • Novel perovskite material is excited by deep-ultraviolet light. • White LED with high CRI of 87.9 is fabricated by coating double perovskites and commercial BaMgAl 10 O 17 :Eu 2+ blue phosphor on deep-UV chip. The commercial potential of traditional double perovskites in white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) has been constrained by low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and narrow emission spectrum, mainly due to parity-forbidden transitions and indirect bandgap characteristics. To address these issues, Ag + doped Cs 2 NaInCl 6 (CNIC) are synthesized via solvothermal method. Compared to the undoped sample exhibiting a low PLQY of 2.76%, Ag + doped samples show a high PLQY of 77.56%, attributing to STEs emission of 540 nm. Additionally, a series of Cs 2 Na 0.7 Ag 0.3 InCl 6 : x Mn 2+ novel materials are designed. The results demonstrate that an energy transfer pathway from STEs to Mn 2+ in co-doped system, enabling tunable dual emission across the entire visible spectrum. Notably, Cs 2 Na 0.7 Ag 0.3 InCl 6 : x Mn 2+ materials can be effectively excited by deep-ultraviolet (deep-UV) light. A WLEDs device is fabricated by coating this novel material and commercial BaMgAl 10 O 17 :Eu 2+ blue phosphor on deep-UV chip, producing warm white light with a CIE coordinate of (0.3609, 0.3576), a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 4460 K and a high color rendering index (CRI) of 87.9. These results show that Cs 2 Na 0.7 Ag 0.3 InCl 6 : x Mn 2+ novel materials have potential for application in solid-state lighting.

Carbon dots (CDs) have attracted extensive interest owing to their outstanding optical properties, biocompatibility, and low-cost synthesis. Nevertheless, the preparation of multicolor CDs remains complex and most post-synthetic strategies allow only limited wavelength modulation, the full-spectrum tunability across the visible region still has yet to be achieved. Herein, we report a simple photochemical strategy that enables continuous fluorescence tuning of red-emissive CDs (R-CDs) via controlled UV-induced photoetching in N,N-dimethylformamide. UV irradiation generates reactive radical species, which progressively disrupt graphitic domains. Meanwhile, solvent–surface interactions synchronously regulate emissive surface states, and the two effects together enable precise size control and continuous emission modulation. Consequently, the emission peak of the R-CDs exhibits a systematic blue shift from 657 nm to 573, 530, 490, and ultimately 443 nm, achieving full-spectrum emission across the visible range. Notably, irradiation time serves as a single adjustable parameter, greatly simplifying the optimization of multiple synthetic conditions. Beyond their excellent performance in high–color-rendering-index white light-emitting diodes, the photochromic CDs were further applied in multi-level fluorescent information encryption, achieving five distinct levels of optical security. This work establishes a robust platform for progressive fluorescence tuning of CDs with promising potential in advanced photonic and information-security applications.

The UV/sulfite system is currently regarded as the most effective method for degrading and defluorinating per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), operating via hydrated electrons (e aq − ). Previous studies largely concentrate on PFAS molecular structure, overlooking the critical influence of e aq − microstructure. By integrating ab initio molecular dynamics simulations with experiments, we reveal strong correlations between cavity radius and PFAS removal efficiency (R 2 = 0.99) and defluorination reaction (R 2 = 0.89). Expanding the cavity radius enhances spin density at its centre (R 2 = 0.83), increasing the availability of solvated electrons for interaction with PFAS active sites and facilitating diffusion-controlled electron transfer that drives defluorination. Under alkaline conditions, an increase in cavity radius from 1.52 to 1.82 Å enhances spin-density delocalisation within the e aq − cavity, improving degradation efficiency. These findings are supported by experimental results revealing >97% degradation of hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (or its ammonium salt ‘GenX’) at pH 12. Concentrated e aq − enables cooperative multi-site attack on PFAS molecules, accounting for the enhanced defluorination. Overall, this study reveals an atomic-scale correlation between e aq − microstructure and defluorination dynamics. Beyond conventional approaches of modifying PFAS structures, we propose that regulating the solvation structure of e aq − offers a strategy for efficient degradation.

Lac terpenic acid (LTA), obtained from shellac processing waste, is a sustainable biomass for high-performance materials. We converted LTA into an underwater UV-curable resin via acrylation and copolymerization with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA). UV curing underwater accelerated polymerization six-fold compared to that in air, producing coatings with smoother surfaces. At 40 wt% GMA, the coating (LGM0.4) achieved lap-shear strength of 6.66 MPa, bending strength of 14.64 MPa, and tensile strength of 9.22 MPa. It also resisted corrosion from acids, alkalis, high temperatures, etc., and adhered strongly to steel, aluminum, PVC, and glass. Furthermore, it integrated multiple functionalities including hydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 107°, self-cleaning and stable orange fluorescence under 365 nm UV irradiation. This work offers a practical and scalable approach to convert shellac waste into high-performance coatings.

Oleanolic acid (OL) and genistein (GN) are bioactive compounds known for their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral, cardioprotective, and anticancer properties. Their synergistic therapeutic potential motivated the development of a hybrid nanoformulation, comprising GN nanoparticles incorporated into an OL-loaded liposomal system named GOL. The formulation was extensively characterized for particle size, polydispersity index, zeta potential, entrapment efficiency, and pharmacokinetic behavior, demonstrating its suitability for co-delivery of both drugs. To accurately quantify OL and GN in the GOL system, a robust HPLC-UV method was developed and validated. Simultaneous determination was challenging due to distinct chemical and spectral properties; OL showed λmax at 210–215 nm, while GN had λmax at 215, 270, and 336 nm. Optimization using a Box–Behnken design yielded a method using a C18 column with a methanol–acetonitrile–water–tetrahydrofuran (60:20:8:12, v/v) mobile phase and detection at 230 nm. Retention times were 4.8 and 9.9 min for OL and GN. Plasma samples were processed via simple protein precipitation. The method met ICH validation criteria for sensitivity, selectivity, accuracy, precision, robustness, and stability. Finally, the developed method was successfully applied to analyze both drugs from the GOL nanoformulation in both biological fluids and polymeric matrices, enabling a reliable assessment of drug content and stability.

Traditional acrylate reactive diluents, which are derived from fossil resources, are known to exhibit significant irritation and allergenic potential, leading to their prohibition in high-end electronics, particularly in wearable devices. To address these limitations, four bio-based acrylate reactive diluents (BRDs) were synthesized via the reaction of alcohols derived from renewable sources, piperitol, vanillin, eugenol, and isosorbide, with methacrylic anhydride. The viscosity of the synthesized BRDs and the T g of their corresponding polymers were systematically evaluated and compared with those of the petroleum-based diluent isobornyl acrylate (IBOA). The BRDs were then blended with acrylate-terminated polyurethane (APU) to formulate a series of UV-curable polyurethane adhesives (APU-BRDs). The results suggest that BRDs effectively reduce the viscosity of APU. By selecting and combining BRDs, the bonding strength of APU-BRDs to polar substrates such as PC and glass can reach 20 MPa. Even for non-polar substrates like PE, the strength is close to 5 MPa. The values obtained in this study exceed those of adhesives prepared using the conventional petroleum-based diluent IBOA. Furthermore, the study explored the potential application of APU-BRDs in smart wearable devices, confirming their suitability for next-generation wearable technology.

As the most abundant aromatic biomass resource in nature, lignin exhibits excellent ultraviolet (UV) absorption, photothermal conversion, and antioxidant properties. However, its complex structure and poor processability limit its application in flexible functional materials. In this work, a series of lignin- graft -poly(acrylamide- co - n -butyl acrylate) (Lignin- g -P(AM- co -BA)) copolymers was designed and synthesized by homogeneous reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. These Lignin- g -P(AM- co -BA) copolymers show tunable glass transition temperatures ranging from −21.9 to 51.2 °C and adjustable tensile strength values from 0.24 to 20.2 MPa by manipulating the PAM and lignin contents. Benefiting from the efficient light absorption and non-radiative relaxation processes of the aromatic conjugated structure of lignin, the lignin-based elastomers possess outstanding UV-shielding performance and extraordinary photothermal conversion ability. Furthermore, these Lignin- g -P(AM- co -BA) copolymer films can be integrated as a photothermal layer into thermoelectric power generation (TEG) devices to construct a flexible photothermal power generation system. Overall, this study provides a new strategy for the high-value utilization of lignin, and the developed lignin graft copolymers show great application potential in smart devices.

The combination of ultraviolet (UV) and periodate (PI) is a promising advanced oxidation process. We investigated the inactivation of a typical harmful algae species,Heterosigma akashiwoby UV/PI treatment and explored the inactivation mechanism at the cellular and molecular levels. The inactivation efficacy ofH. akashiwoby UV/PI and UV treatment alone was 9.21-ln and 1.23-ln within 37.5 min, respectively. Hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2) contributed toH. akashiwoinactivation in the UV/PI system. Obvious destruction of the cell structure observed by transmission electron microscopy and the increases in extracellular DNA levels indicated membrane damage by the reactive species. The activity changes in the antioxidant enzymes and the decreases in ATP contents ofH. akashiwoafter UV/PI treatment were both more severe than that after UV treatment. The results indicated that the antioxidant defense system and the mitochondria ofH. akashiwocells were disrupted. The photosynthesis was also affected as both of the chlorophyll-a content and the maximum dark-adapted photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) ofH. akashiwodecreased obviously. The transcriptomics analysis proved that UV/PI treatment caused abnormal energy metabolism and cell function. Moreover, the down regulation of gene expression enriched in the phagocytic pathway indicated that the cell was severely damaged and inactivated under oxidative stress.

Nanoplastics are a significant environmental threat due to their persistence and toxicity. In this study, we prepared a kind of Ag-doped Co 3 O 4 catalyst using a coprecipitation method, aimed at enhancing its photocatalytic degradation efficiency of polystyrene nanoplastics under UV irradiation. Morphology and component of Ag/Co 3 O 4 have been investigated by XRD, FTIR, TEM, and BET analysis. The information of absorption and energy levels for catalysts is provided by UV–vis DRS, Tauc plots, and Mott–Schottky curves. Charge-transfer abilities for catalysts have been analyzed by PL spectra and EIS. The photocatalytic activities of Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs), Co 3 O 4 , and Ag/Co 3 O 4 have been carefully evaluated in this work. Ag/Co 3 O 4 photocatalyst exhibits the highest degradation efficiency with a kinetic rate constant of 0.0086 min − 1 , outperforming that of Co 3 O 4 (0.0062 min − 1 ) and Ag NPs (0.0036 min − 1 ). The degradation efficiencies for catalysts have also been assessed under varying pH conditions (neutral, acidic, and basic). Among them, Ag/Co 3 O 4 shows a notable degradation efficiency of 61% at pH 7, compared to 46% for Co 3 O 4 and 30% for Ag NPs. In addition, the intermediates and final products have also been discussed according to Py-GC/MS results.
