This study addressed the critical need for antibiotic pollution control in industrial wastewater by successfully constructing a two-dimensional/two-dimensional NiFe-LDH/C 3 N 4 Z-type heterojunction photocatalyst with strong chemical bonding through an innovative interfacial chemical engineering strategy. Thermal activation was used to expose N active sites on the C 3 N 4 surface, and in-situ growth of NiFe-LDH nanosheets was achieved via co-precipitation. Stable Ni-N and Fe-N coordination bonds were constructed at the heterojunction interface, forming an efficient interfacial charge transport channel that significantly suppressed the recombination of photogenerated carriers. Material characterization showed that the catalyst possessed a broadened visible light response, enhanced specific surface area, and optimized charge separation efficiency. Photocatalytic experiments demonstrated excellent degradation performance for fluoroquinolone antibiotics such as norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and ofloxacin. Norfloxacin achieved a 90% removal rate within 120 minutes, with good cycling stability. Mechanistic studies revealed that the degradation process is primarily driven by superoxide radicals (·O 2 - ). This work not only proposed a novel method for constructing heterostructures through "surface active site design and in-situ interface bonding", but also experimentally revealed the key role of interfacial chemical bonding in regulating band structure, promoting charge separation and enhancing material stability, providing important theoretical and practical basis for the rational design of efficient and stable photocatalytic materials under the guidance of surface and interface science.

ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) is a promising visible-light photocatalyst, yet its activity and stability are severely limited by rapid charge recombination and photocorrosion. Here we report a UiO-67-mediated solid-state Z-scheme strategy to simultaneously enhance the efficiency and durability of ZIS for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. By integrating UiO-67 with ZIS and Pt nanoparticles, an intimate heterointerface with pronounced interfacial charge redistribution is established, featuring spontaneous electron transfer from UiO-67 to ZIS. As a result, the UiO-67/ZIS/Pt composite delivers a hydrogen evolution rate 15.69 times higher than pristine ZIS, together with an apparent quantum yield of 5.94% at 380 nm and excellent cycling stability. Mechanistic studies reveal that UiO-67 functions as an interfacial charge-regulation platform that promotes Z-scheme electron flow while suppressing charge recombination. This work provides a rational approach for overcoming the intrinsic limitations of metal sulfide photocatalysts via MOF-mediated Z-scheme engineering.

As a typical aromatic volatile organic compounds (VOCs), toluene is difficult to be decomposed by photocatalysts under visible-light driven. Herein, the Ag/AgCl/Bi 2 WO 6 heterojunction photocatalysts were synthesized by multi-step process involving chemical deposition of AgCl on the surface of Bi 2 WO 6 and subsequently photoreduction of Ag 0 nanoparticles by UV light. The as-synthesized photocatalysts were characterized by XRD , SEM, TEM, XPS , UV–vis, PL and ESR to investigate the microstructures and electronic structures. The corresponding degradation efficiencies of gaseous toluene were evaluated and the optimal Ag/AgCl/Bi 2 WO 6 exhibited almost 99.9% removal rate after 60 min illumination with visible light (>420 nm). The optical absorption properties and radical trapping experiments revealed the possible energy band structure of Ag/AgCl/Bi 2 WO 6 heterojunction. Finally, the possible enhancement mechanism was also proposed that the cooperation of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect, efficient separation of electron-hole pairs, extension of the carrier lifetime as well as the high redox potentials of Z -scheme heterojunction were the primary reasons. Therefore, construction of Z-scheme heterojunction of Ag/AgCl/Bi 2 WO 6 with higher redox ability is an effective way to degradation gaseous toluene under visible-light irradiation.

Recently, direct Z-scheme heterojunction catalysts have become an important hotspot in photocatalytic applications due to their much stronger redox capabilities. Novel direct Z-scheme CdS@CoWO 4 spherical heterojunction photocatalysts were ingeniously designed and synthesized herein. The structural characterization and morphology analysis demonstrated that homogeneous heterojunctions between CdS and CoWO 4 were indeed formed in the composite photocatalysts. Moreover, CdS@CoWO 4 heterojunction photocatalysts exhibited excellent degradation capability towards refractory micropollutants (Pharmaceutical intermediates, dyes, and industrial additives, etc ) in wastewater. Especially, the strongest photocatalytic activity reflected by the highest reaction kinetic parameter ( k = 8.13 × 10 −2 min −1 ) was observed in the CdS-2CoWO 4 catalyst with the mass ratio of CdS:CoWO 4 = 1:2, which is nearly 4 and 58 times as high as that of pure CdS ( k = 2.21 × 10 −2 min −1 ) and CoWO 4 ( k = 1.39 × 10 −3 min −1 ), respectively. First-principles study combined with the radical species trapping experiments revealed that the charge transfer pathways and mechanisms in these heterojunctions favor the direct Z-scheme rather than the traditional Type-II mode. A key built-in electric field formed at the contact interfaces of CdS and CoWO 4 drives the Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism, which strengthens the redox capacity of photogenerated carriers and ultimately greatly enhances the photocatalytic activity of the heterojunction catalysts. It is worth applauding that CdS and CoWO 4 can form such Z-scheme heterostructures in a wide span of component ratios, which is of great benefit for their practical applications in environmental remediation.

Realizing CO2 reduction with H2O oxidation on g-C3N4-based photocatalysts is quite promising yet challenging. Herein, an efficient direct Z-scheme heterostructure of ultrathin CsPbBr3/g-C3N4 nanosheets is fabricated via a simple electrostatic self-assembly process, resulting in an effective photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CH4 (184.0 μmol g−1) and CO (105.2 μmol g−1) with oxidation of H2O under AM 1.5G irradiation. Notably, in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis demonstrated that a direct Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism at the CsPbBr3 and g-C3N4 interface is enabled, thereby achieving efficient charge separation and high redox potentials to drive photocatalytic CO2 reduction and H2O oxidation synchronously. Isotopic labelling experiments revealed that the adsorbed water is activated to release H atoms and eventually assists the CO2 reduction. Theoretical calculations further revealed that the p orbitals of Pb atoms hybridize with the 2π* orbitals of CO2 molecules, strengthening the affinity of CO2 and weakening the binding strength. Moreover, overlapping between Pb p orbitals and 5σ orbitals of CO molecules promote the protonation of CO* intermediates. This work provides an in-depth understanding and guidance for constructing high-efficiency catalysts for CO2 reduction with H2O oxidation.

Constructing direct Z-scheme heterostructure is an effective way to promote the separation of photogenerated carriers and optimize the redox ability of the photocatalytic system. This work reports the in-situ synthesis of sea-urchin-like ZnS/SnO 2 Z-scheme heterojunctions via a one-step hydrothermal method . Both experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the tight interfaces derived from in-situ precursor dissociation can ensure a fast transfer for photogenerated carriers, meanwhile, the Z-scheme type of heterojunctions can increase the carrier separation efficiency and maintain the high reduction ability of photogenerated electrons. As expected, the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of the as-optimized ZnS/SnO 2 sample can reach 2.17 mmol g −1 h −1 , which is 15.5 times higher than that of the commercial ZnS. This work can offer a novel strategy for designing Z-scheme heterojunction as well as controlling the contact interface for boosted photocatalytic activity .

In this work, a novel dual Z-scheme Bi 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 /black phosphorus quantum dots (Bi 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 /BPQDs) composites were fabricated and utilized towards photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) under visible-light irradiation. Optimizing the content of g-C 3 N 4 and BPQDs in Bi 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 /BPQDs composites to a suitable mass ratio can enhance the visible-light harvesting capacity and increase the charge separation efficiency and the transfer rate of excited-state electrons and holes, resulting in much higher photocatalytic activity for BPA degradation (95.6%, at 20 mg/L in 120 min) than that of Bi 2 WO 6 (63.7%), g-C 3 N 4 (25.0%), BPQDs (8.5%), and Bi 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 (79.6%), respectively. Radical trapping experiments indicated that photogenerated holes (h + ) and superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ) played crucial roles in photocatalytic BPA degradation. Further, the possible degradation pathway and photocatalytic mechanism was proposed by analyzing the BPA intermediates. This work also demonstrated that the Bi 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 /BPQDs as effective photocatalysts was stable and have promising potential to remove environmental contaminants from real water samples.

Photothermal oxidation of cyclohexane with molecular oxygen in solvent-free is considered to be an efficient approach for the formation of cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol (KA oil), and possesses the potential to generate the next stage product of adipic acid (AA) by one-pot oxidation in chemical industry. Herein, a unique type of Co 8 La 1 O x /WO 3 Z-scheme nanocomposites with p-n heterojunction was successfully constructed by a facile process of solvothermal reaction in conjunction with the simple impregnation method. The Co 8 La 1 O x /WO 3 Z-scheme heterojunction nanocomposites achieved an excellent catalytic performance for the photothermal oxidation of cyclohexane at 120 ℃ under visible light in solvent-free conditions. Surprisingly, 10.35% conversion of cyclohexane with 98.75% selectivity of KA oil (liquid, 80.97%) and AA (solid, 17.78%) was achieved during the reaction time of 3 h. Moreover, the desirable durability and stability of the Co 8 La 1 O x /WO 3 composites demonstrated a potential application as an industrial catalyst. The outstanding catalytic performance of the Co 8 La 1 O x /WO 3 composites could be ascribed to the enhanced electron excitation capacity, the accelerated electron-hole separation and migration, the inhibited charge recombination, the strong visible-light absorption, and the efficient synergetic catalytic effect of photo-thermo. Besides, high oxygen adsorption capacity and large specific surface area of the Co 8 La 1 O x /WO 3 composites can efficiently build a bridge between cyclohexane and O 2 to fully utilize the oxygen participation in the oxidation. The present approach provides a promising perspective for the designing and constructing of Z-scheme heterojunction catalyst with a high-efficiency photo-thermo catalytic performance in the oxidation of cyclohexane to KA oil and AA in chemical industry.

The construction of Z-scheme heterostructures is one of the most effective strategies to improve photocatalytic efficiency. In this study, Ag + doped ZnIn 2 S 4 /Bi 2 S 3 composite nanosphere materials with different mass fractions of Bi 2 S 3 were successfully synthesized by the solvothermal method. Systematic studies showed that the construction of heterogeneous structures and Ag + doping could extend the optical absorption edge and provide more active sites. More importantly, it was shown by photoelectrochemical and PL spectroscopy tests that Ag: ZnIn 2 S 4 /Bi 2 S 3 has strong visible light absorption and photocarrier transfer capability. In addition, the Z-scheme mechanism of Ag: ZnIn 2 S 4 /Bi 2 S 3 was investigated by electron spin response (ESR) and active substance capture experiments, which confirmed that both superoxide radicals( O − 2 ) and hydroxyl radicals( OH) were involved in the photocatalytic reaction. The results showed that the optimized Ag: ZnIn 2 S 4 /2.5%Bi 2 S 3 degraded TC by 89.7%, 1.87 times higher than the original ZnIn 2 S 4 . This work provides a promising method for the construction of Z-scheme heterojunctions based on ZnIn 2 S 4 .

All-inorganic lead-free halide double perovskites have emerged as rising star photocatalysts to substitute the toxic lead-based hailed perovskites (LHPs) owing to their unique photophysical properties. Nevertheless, their photocatalytic activities toward CO 2 reduction are still far from comparable with the LHPs, associated with severe charge recombination and sluggish surface catalytic reaction . Herein, a delicate 0D/2D heterojunction of Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 /Bi 2 WO 6 (CABB/BWO) was assembled by in-situ growing cubic CABB nanocrystals on the flat surface of BWO nanosheets via a facile hot-injection method. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations disclose that the work function and Fermi level difference between CABB and BWO give rise to charge redistribution at the interface upon the formation of the heterojunction, creating an internal electric field (IEF). Upon light irradiation , the IEF enables the photogenerated electron transfer from BWO to CABB via direct Z-scheme electron transfer mode with striking spatial charge separation as verified by in-situ X-ray photoelectron (XPS) and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra. Consequently, the CABB/BWO heterojunction realizes 7-fold higher photocatalytic activity than pristine CABB with significant electron consumption rate of 87.66 µmol g -1 h −1 under simulated solar light (AM 1.5G).

Production of H 2 from photocatalytic seawater splitting is a more promising but more difficult way than from pure water due to the high salinity of seawater. Efficient and stable photocatalyst is crucial and desired. In this work, well-defined Z-scheme Na 2 Ti 3 O 7 /Ag/CdS (N 10 A 1 C 5 ) multidimensional heterojunctions composed of zero-dimensional Ag nanoclusters , one-dimensional Na 2 Ti 3 O 7 (NTO) nanotubes , and two-dimensional CdS nanoplates were constructed. Zero-dimensional Ag nanoclusters decorated on the surface of NTO nanotubes not only act as electron mediator for the formation of Z-scheme between NTO and CdS, but also provide hot electrons due to their plasma effect. CdS nanoplates cooperated with Ag nanoclusters act as visible light absorber, which improve both the visible light absorption range and intensity. With Na 2 S·9H 2 O (0.25 M) and Na 2 SO 3 (0.35 M) as the sacrificial agent , the resultant Z-scheme N 10 A 1 C 5 heterojunctions show a H 2 production of 1793 μmol/(g·h) from visible-light-driven photocatalytic seawater splitting, which is 9.7 times that of NTO/CdS type II heterojunctions. Notably, the Z-scheme N 10 A 1 C 5 also exhibit stability of structure in the high salinity environment due to the interlayer structure of NTO, which can accommodate metal cations in seawater. After four 3-h cycles, the catalytic activity can still maintain 96.6%. This Z-scheme heterojunction is expected to provide a strategy for the design of efficient and stable photocatalysts for the solar energy driven seawater splitting.

In this paper, nitrobenzene was found to be efficiently degraded by the as-prepared Z-scheme Bi 2 O 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 photocatalyst under visible light . The Bi 2 WO 6 and the composites were fabricated individually by solid phase synthesis and water-assisted grinding method. The crystal structure, morphologies, interface, optical property and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of samples were examined by different characterization techniques. The tests on photodegradation of nitrobenzene stated clearly the as-prepared composite exhibited evidently enhanced photocatalytic performace compared with uniphase material. Additionally, the optimal Bi 2 O 3 content in the coupled photocatalysts was 2%. The supreme rate constant of nitrobenzene degradation was almost 3.1 and 2.7 times that of single Bi 2 O 3 and Bi 2 WO 6 , respectively. The obviously increased photocatalytic performance of the composite was due to the highly effective separation of photoexcited electron-hole pairs over the Z-scheme structure formed between Bi 2 O 3 and Bi 2 WO 6 . The investigation provides great potential applications in treatment of the toxic and refractory wastewater.
