Graphical In the study, Mn-functionalized ZIF-67 (Mn@ZIF-67) hybrid material was synthesized using a post-synthesis modification method. Its oxidase-like catalytic activity effect enabled this material to directly oxidize colorless TMB into blue oxTMB without the presence of H 2 O 2 . This color change provided a means for the detection of Art and AA. The work also demonstrated the practical application of this method in analyzing real samples containing AA or Art. Artemisinin (Art) is the first-choice medicine for treating malaria. It also shows good therapeutic effects in antibacterial and antitumor treatment. Therefore, a simple and efficient method for detecting Art is of great significance. Mn-functionalized ZIF-67 (Mn@ZIF-67) hybrid materials were synthesized using a post-synthesis modification method. Due to the introduction of Mn 2+ , Mn@ZIF-67 possesses higher peroxidase/oxidase like dual-mimic enzymes activity than ZIF-67, which can catalyze Art and generate peroxyl radicals. Based on this fact, Mn@ZIF-67 was used to detect Art in the presence of TMB. A good linear relationship between absorption intensities at 652 nm and Art concentrations was obtained in the range of 0–22 μM with a detection limit of 200 nM. Ascorbic acid (AA), due to its reducibility, can inhibit peroxidase/oxidase mimetics activity of Mn@ZIF-67 and the blue Mn@ZIF-67-TMB solution fades gradually with the addition of AA. Mn@ZIF-67-TMB acting as a colorimetric sensor, AA can be sensitively detected ranging from 0–30 μM, and the detection limit is 50 nM. Coexisting substances don't interfere with the detection of Art or AA. This sensing platform provides a highly sensitive and selective colorimetric method for monitoring AA and Art in serum, thereby demonstrating remarkable practicality.

Melamine-impregnated paper, a decorative material in furniture and interior design, could potentially impede the spread of indoor bacteria if it possesses antibacterial properties. Here, nano Ag-doped ZIF-8 (Ag@ZIF-8) was synthesized using ion exchange and in-situ chemical reduction strategies, followed by incorporating it into melamine-impregnated paper. The ion exchange mechanism of Zn 2+ and Ag + during ion exchange reactions was investigated. The structure of Ag@ZIF-8 was well-defined, with Ag nanoparticles evenly distributed on the surface of ZIF-8. Ag@ZIF-8 showed good thermal stability at 400 °C, meeting the requirements for the hot-pressing process of the melamine-impregnated paper. Ag@ZIF-8 exhibited enhanced ROS generation under visible light compare to ZIF-8, which was attributed to its reinforced light absorption and charge carrier separation facilitated by the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect. The antibacterial activity of Ag@ZIF-8 was better than ZIF-8, owing to the multiple-synergistic antibacterial mechanisms of the ion release and ROS generation. Specifically, the 10-Ag@ZIF-8 exhibited MIC of 128 μg/mL and 64 μg/mL against E. coli and S. aureus , respectively. The signal intensity of •O 2 − induced by 10-Ag@ZIF-8 was 4.38 times higher than that of ZIF-8. As the addition of Ag@ZIF-8 increased, the antibacterial performance of melamine-impregnated paper improved. Considering the antibacterial property and economy of melamine-impregnated paper, 0.20 wt% was the optimal amount for 10-Ag@ZIF-8 decorated blockboard. This study proposes a novel approach for synthesizing MOF-based melamine-impregnated paper with antibacterial properties, aiming to reduce bacterial spread, minimize disease risks, and contribute to lowering overall healthcare costs.

Bacterial adhesion and colonization can result in chronic non-healing wounds. Current hydrophilic wound dressings can release antibacterial agents into the wound exudate, but may result in overhydrated wounds, bacterial overgrowth, and even tissue maceration. Hydrophobic dressings are anti-fouling, though ineffective to encapsulate and release bactericidal agents. Combining the advantages of hydrophilic and hydrophobic dressings seems difficult, until the development of superwettability surfaces offers an opportunity for omniphobic dressings from intrinsic hydrophilic polymers. Herein, omniphobic porous hydrogel wound dressings loaded with a zinc imidazolate framework 8 (ZIF-8) are fabricated by a microfluidic-emulsion-templating method. The fabricated porous hydrogel membrane with its reentrant architecture is repellent to blood and body fluids, though intrinsically hydrophilic. This unique combination not only reduces the adhesion of harmful microbes, but also enables the encapsulation and release of antibacterial ingredients to wounded sites from hydrophilic polymer networks. As such, the omniphobic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)@hydrogel porous wound dressing can inhibit bacteria invasion and enable the controlled release of the bactericidal, anti-inflammatory, and nontoxic zinc ions. Furthermore, in vivo study of infected full-thickness skin defect models demonstrates that the dressing also accelerates wound closure by promoting angiogenesis and collagen deposition. Therefore, the omniphobic MOFs@hydrogel porous wound dressings are potentially useful for clinical application.

Adsorptive removal of mercury ion from wastewater has become a hot topic due to the toxicity and persistence; acquiring adsorbent materials with high-capacity, rapid-kinetic, super-selective while low-cost features are highly demanded. Herein, based on the full functionality of collagen fiber (CF) from the leather waste, we proposed an innovative synthetic approach through exploiting amino-functionalized ZIF-7 (ZIF-7-NH 2 ) as functional groups to facilely in-situ incorporate with CF, affording low-cost but effective adsorbent materials of CF/ZIF-7-NH 2 composite maximizing both functions of CF and ZIF-7-NH 2 in the Hg(II) capture. Remarkably, it exhibits an ultra-high capacity as high as 909.09 mg g - 1 , fast kinetics that could remove 99.01 % of 200 mg·L -1 within 20 min, and significant selectivity of S Hg/M ( K d Hg / K d M ) as large as 522–1017 over Mg 2+ , K + , Ca 2+ , Cd 2+ , and Mn 2+ . We understand such an impressive adsorption is contributed by the synergistic action between functional groups including on the CF and ZIF-7-NH 2 . This study offers an effective method for removing heavy metal ions, achieving efficient removal of Hg(II) ions for pollution control, and promoting the reuse of waste CF to reduce waste accumulation in various aspects.

Periodontitis, an inflammatory bone resorption disease associated with dental plaque, poses significant challenges for effective treatment. In this study, we developed Mino@ZIF-8 nanoparticles inspired by the periodontal microenvironment and the unique properties of zeolitic imidazolate framework 8, aiming to address the complex pathogenesis of periodontitis. Transcriptome analysis revealed the active engagement of Mino@ZIF-8 nanoparticles in innate and adaptive inflammatory host defense and cellular metabolic remodeling. Through sustained release of the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agent minocycline hydrochloride (Mino) and the generation of Zn2+ with pro-antioxidant effects during degradation, Mino@ZIF-8 nanoparticles synergistically alleviate inflammation and oxidative damage. Notably, our study focuses on the pivotal role of zinc ions in mitochondrial oxidation protection. Under lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation, periodontal ligament cells undergo a metabolic shift from oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) to glycolysis, leading to reduced ATP production and increased reactive oxygen species levels. However, Zn2+ effectively rebalances the glycolysis-OXPHOS imbalance, restoring cellular bioenergetics, mitigating oxidative damage, rescuing impaired mitochondria, and suppressing inflammatory cytokine production through modulation of the AKT/GSK3β/NRF2 pathway. This research not only presents a promising approach for periodontitis treatment but also offers novel therapeutic opportunities for zinc-containing materials, providing valuable insights into the design of biomaterials targeting cellular energy metabolism regulation.

The unique periodic structure of photonic crystals demonstrates an effective slow photon effect that enhances the interaction between light and matter. This study designed and prepared MOF photonic crystal beads, and significantly improved the photocatalytic efficiency by utilizing the slow light effect. Utilizing microfluidic technology, ZIF-8 was self-assembled to form photonic crystal beads (PCB-Z) to enhance adsorption properties and light absorption. The surface of PCB-Z is modified with CdS to form a heterostructure (PCB-ZC), which widens the absorption spectrum, reduces the carrier recombination rate, and increases the specific surface area, while the photocurrent intensity of PCB-ZC is about 1.8 and 29 times that of CdS and PCB-Z. Under the combined effect of photonic crystal structure, ZIF-8/CdS heterojunction and slow photon effect, the degradation rate of Rhodamine B by PCB-ZC was 15.22 times higher than the disordered ZIF-8 powder, and the photocatalytic performance was significantly improved. The dominant role of holes in Rhodamine B degradation was confirmed by free radical trapping experiments and EPR tests. This research confirms that MOF-based photonic crystals can be assembled into periodic structures to enhance adsorption properties and light absorption, which provides a new paradigm for the development of MOF-based photocatalysts.

Chloride-induced corrosion of steel reinforcement is the key factor leading to the degradation of reinforced concrete building durability. Improving the corrosion resistance of oxide scale of rebar has always been a research hotspot in the field of civil engineering materials. A ZIF-8 modified Ce–Sol–gel (ZCS) film was prepared on oxide scale of plain steel rebars by sol–gel method. It is observed that the | Z | 0.01 Hz value of the ZCS film reached 320 kΩ cm 2 , which is about 29 times higher than that of blank rebar in simulated concrete pore (SCP) solution with 0.1 M NaCl. Then, they were inserted into mortar block and curing them in a curing box at T = 20 ± 2 °C and RH = 95 ± 2% for 28 days. Subsequently, these samples were subject to electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 3.5 wt% NaCl. The | Z | 0.01 Hz value of the rebar with the ZCS film was six times higher than that of the blank rebar after immersing for 20 days, resulting in an overall increase in corrosion resistance for rebar. The results indicated that the modification by ZIF-8 could reduce the porosity of Ce–sol–gel (CS) film and improved the “labyrinth effect” of the film. Additionally, the negative charge on the surface of ZIF-8 in alkaline condition increased the repulsion effect with Cl − , significantly reducing the sensitivity of rebar to Cl − .

Developing high-performance H 2 /CH 4 separation membranes is of great potential for H 2 production in the petroleum industry. Incorporating nanofillers into a polymer matrix to form mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) can elevate selectivity and permeability, but poor polymer-filler interfacial compatibility and filler aggregation are formidable problems. Targeting this, we propose a novel approach by incorporating a metal–organic framework (MOF) gel, ZIF-8 gel, as the versatile filler to a high free volume polymer PIM-1 and investigate the H 2 /CH 4 separation capabilities of the MMMs. Benefiting from the gel network morphology of ZIF-8, they were dispersed evenly in the PIM-1 matrix. The interconnected gel network structure of ZIF-8 gel helped to construct continuous gas transport pathways in the polymer. As a result, the H 2 /CH 4 separation performance was notably improved, demonstrating a substantial increase in H 2 permeability by 78.9% (exceeding 6800 Barrer) and a 38.0% enhancement in H 2 /CH 4 selectivity at a ZIF-8 gel loading of 31.0 wt%. These improvements surpassed the upper bound established in 2008. The Maxwell and Lewis-Nielsen models were developed to clarify gas transport mechanisms across membranes, and the experimental data of ZIF-8 gel/PIM-1 was well-matched with the calculated results of the Lewis-Nielsen models. Adopting MOF gel as fillers may pave a new approach to design high-performance MMMs with interconnected transport pathways.

In this study, we synthesized DOX-loaded H-ZIF-8@CaCO 3 -PEG nanocarrier, which combined with calcium overload and photothermal therapy (PTT) for synergistic therapy. The nanocarrier comprised a PEG modified calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) shell and a hollow imidazolate zeolite skeleton (H-ZIF-8) core, in which the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) and photosensitizer indocyanine green (ICG) were simultaneously co-loaded. In vitro cellular experiments revealed that the lethality of DOX&ICG@H-ZIF-8@CaCO 3 -PEG against tumor cells was significantly higher than that of the single chemotherapy owing to the combination with chemotherapy and photothermal therapy as well as calcium overloading. This drug-loaded nanocarrier exhibits notable characteristics such as exceptional stability, elevated drug loading capacity and efficient release of the loaded drug, which provides a promising perspective for efficient synergistic therapy.

Rising global demand for antibiotics drives the development of nanofiltration (NF) membrane separation technology. However, traditional NF membranes face structural hurdles in practice, mainly the permeability-selectivity trade-off and poor separation precision for multi-component fermentation broths. We proposed a polyelectrolyte gel confined crystallization strategy to in-situ grow ZIF-8 crystals within a poly (acrylic acid)/polyethyleneimine (PAA/PEI) matrix, constructing a hybrid membrane (PAA/PEI@ZIF-8M) with high hydrophilicity, rigid interconnected pores, and good stability. By precisely controlling crystallization kinetics under nano-confinement, the membrane achieves synergistic integration of ZIF-8 molecular sieving and polyelectrolyte networks, and eliminates interfacial defects. The resultant PAA/PEI@ZIF-8M membrane exhibits a high water permeance of 35.3 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 –12-fold improvement over the pristine PAA/PEI membrane, along with high selectivity for chlortetracycline hydrochloride (OTC)/sucrose (∼8.0) and OTC/NaCl (∼5.0). Simultaneously, ZIF-8 nanocrystals in PAA/PEI gel act as anti-deformation pillars, while covalent crosslinking and multiple coordination interactions form a stabilized network, resulting in a good and stable separation performance during long-term running process. Moreover, multistage purification tests confirm industrial feasibility, yielding OTC with 97 % purity and a 2-fold concentration increase, meeting pharmaceutical-grade standards. This strategy establishes a novel paradigm for designing stable and high-performance polyelectrolyte gel NF membranes, advancing sustainable antibiotic production.

Metal corrosion poses significant economic and safety challenges across industries, necessitating efficient cathodic protection strategies. Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) offers a promising self-powered solution by harvesting ambient mechanical energy. This study presents the design of TENG based on fluorinated ZIF-67/PDMS (F-ZIF-67/PDMS) composites for enhanced cathodic protection of 304 stainless steel (304SS). The present study integrates dual regulation of microstructure and surface energy to synergistically enhance the triboelectric performance. While loading 5 wt.% ZIF-67, the TENG achieved remarkable output performance with an open-circuit voltage of 187.14 V, short-circuit current of 37.46 μA, and transferred charge of 72.54 nC, delivering a peak power of 3.08 mW. When integrated with a cathodic protection system, the TENG significantly reduced the open-circuit potential (OCP) and the corrosion rate. This work advances the integration of MOF-based triboelectric materials with energy harvesting technologies, offering a sustainable approach to mitigating metal corrosion.

Self-powered piezoelectric materials can generate continuous electrical stimulation in response to weak mechanical forces, holding great potential for accelerating wound healing. Herein, a multifunctional ZIF-8/PVDF piezoelectric fiber dressing was fabricated using the electrospinning method for generating electrical stimulation to enhance the endogenous electric field at the wound site. The incorporation of ZIF-8 nanoparticles and the stretching polarization effect of electrospinning on the fibers promote the formation of the piezoelectric β-phase in PVDF, leading to enhanced piezoelectricity. The improved piezoelectric and conductive properties collectively enhance the output electrical signals of the fiber. The short-circuit voltage and open-circuit current of the 5% ZIF-8/PVDF fiber were 2.97 V and 13.7 nA, respectively, showing significant improvement compared to the pure PVDF fiber. In vitro experiments demonstrate that the fiber can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) and release Zn2+ under ultrasonic conditions, which together with electrical stimulation endows the dressing with effective antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and angiogenic effects. In vivo studies of infected skin defect models demonstrated that the ZIF-8/PVDF fiber dressing can significantly inhibit bacterial infection, regulate inflammatory responses, enhance angiogenesis, and ultimately accelerate the infected wound healing process. This developed multifunctional piezoelectric fiber dressing provides an effective strategy for infected wound repair.
