This study demonstrates effective resistance welding between 7075 aluminum (Al) alloy and carbon fiber/polyether ether ketone (CF/PEEK) composites by combining chemical etching and silanization surface treatments with a polyetherimide (PEI) thermoplastic layer. The effects of this hybrid treatment on the bonding at the 7075 Al alloy/PEI thermoplastic layer interface and the mechanical performance of the welded joints are systematically investigated. Chemical etching created a micro-nano rough surface that enhanced mechanical interlocking and increased hydroxyl group content from 12.7 mol% to 28.5 mol%. Subsequent silanization grafted amino ( NH 2 ) groups onto the 7075 Al alloy surface, enabling hydrogen bonding with the PEI thermoplastic layer. Under the synergistic effects of mechanical interlocking and hydrogen bonding, interfacial bonding is significantly enhanced, increasing the lap shear strength (LSS) of the joint from 0.2 to 24.6 MPa. The fracture failure mode of the welded joint changes from the interfacial failure of the 7075 Al alloy and PEI thermoplastic layer to the interlaminar failure of carbon fiber tearing in the heating element. Summary A new approach enables effective resistance welding of 7075 Al alloy and CF/PEEK composites. A hybrid surface treatment enhances 7075 Al alloy bonding with PEI thermoplastic layer. The hybrid surface treatment induces mechanical interlocking and hydrogen bonding effects. The synergistic effects can significantly enhance the performance of welded joints.

As an efficient clean energy technology, water electrolysis for hydrogen production has its efficiency limited by the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics, which drives the demand for the development of high-performance anode OER catalysts. This work constructs bimetallic (Al, Mn) co-doped nanoporous spinel CoFe 2 O 4 (np-CFO) with a tunable structure and composition as an OER catalyst through a simple two-step dealloying strategy. The as-formed np-CFO (Al and Mn) features a hierarchical flaky configuration; that is, there are a large number of fine nanosheets attached to the surface of a regular micron-sized flake, which not only increases the number of active sites but also enhances mass transport efficiency. Consequently, the optimized catalyst exhibits a low OER overpotential of only 320 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , a minimal Tafel slope of 45.09 mV dec −1 , and exceptional durability. Even under industrial conditions (6 M KOH, 60 °C), it only needs 1.83 V to achieve a current density of 500 mA cm −2 and can maintain good stability for approximately 100 h at this high current density. Theoretical simulations indicate that Al and Mn co-doping could indeed optimize the electronic structure of CFO and thus decrease the energy barrier of OER to 1.35 eV. This work offers a practical approach towards synthesizing efficient and stable OER catalysts.

Nano-thermite has become a subject of significant interest in the composite energetic materials field due to its high energy release rate. To cater to diverse engineering needs, thermite formulations are often customized to fulfill specific criteria. This study investigates the potential of metal nickel (Ni) as an additive to modify nano-thermite formulations, selected for its optimal calorific values and chemical reactivity. The base materials, nano-aluminum (Al) and iron oxide (Fe 2 O 3 ), are blended with varying mass ratios of Ni (1 %, 3 %, 5 %, 7 %, 9 %) using the wet ball milling method. Pre-reaction and post-reaction morphological and compositional alterations in the resultant thermite samples are scrutinized through SEM and XRD characterization tests. Moreover, DSC analysis and combustion experiments were conducted to examine the pyrolysis and combustion behaviors of the evaluated samples. The results reveal a reduced exothermic peak on the DSC curves with the introduction of Ni, making the liquid-solid ( L - S ) phase reaction more challenging compared to the Al/Fe 2 O 3 thermite. Intriguingly, Ni addition progressively decreases the combustion temperature of thermites as the Ni's mass ratio increases, with a peak efficiency at 7 % in the perforation tests on stainless-steel plates. This research further reveals that the thermite reaction mechanism is a combined consequence of the “pre-ignition-fusion” and “fusion-diffusion” mechanisms. These insights can provide valuable guidance for designing thermite formulations for potential applications in storage, management, and pyrotechnic cutting areas.

This study used metal oxide-modified metal-organic frameworks to examine H 2 S catalytic oxidation selectivity. The findings revealed that the oxidation mechanisms and products differed between Fe 2 O 3 /UiO-66 and Al 2 O 3 /UiO-66. The dithionates were intermediate products of H 2 S oxidation on Al 2 O 3 /UiO-66, whereas the bisulfates were intermediate products on Fe 2 O 3 /UiO-66. Fe 2 O 3 /UiO-66 showed stronger surface oxidation activity than Al 2 O 3 /UiO-66. The formation of sulfate/SO 2 was primarily attributable to surface oxygen, whereas elemental sulfur was primarily related to lattice oxygen. The product generation processes of H 2 S on Fe 2 O 3 /UiO-66 and Al 2 O 3 /UiO-66 surfaces were as follows: H 2 S → HSO 4 2− → SO 2 → S for Fe 2 O 3 /UiO-66, while H 2 S → S 2 O 4 2− → SO 2 for Al 2 O 3 /UiO-66. H 2 O and surface oxygen have the potential to alter H 2 S adsorption on the catalyst surface. For Fe 2 O 3 , the conversion of H 2 S to SO 2 involves both an oxidation process and a reduction process. For Al 2 O 3 , the conversion of H 2 S to SO 2 includes two oxidation processes. Due to the oxidation step of S 2 O 4 2− limiting the generation of SO 2 , the reduction process of SO 2 was also hindered, which in turn restricted the production of S over Al 2 O 3 . Fe 2 O 3 can achieve the oxidation and removal of H 2 S at lower reaction temperatures, while also creating elemental S.

Cu3BiS3 has been considered as an attractive photovoltaic material due to its suitable bandgap, excellent photoelectric properties, abundant component elements and low toxicity. However, most of the reported Cu3BiS3 solar cells contain toxic components in other functioning layers such as CdS in electron-transport layers (ETLs). In this study, the Cu3BiS3 thin films were prepared by spin-coating method. We find that the CuCl concentration in precursor solutions has influences on both the optical bandgap and grain size of the Cu3BiS3 thin films, thus affecting the performance of solar cells. The optimal CuCl concentration is 0.91 M. Besides, Al doped TiO2 (ATO) and MoOx films are employed as ETLs and hole-transport layers (HTLs) respectively, constructing a totally non-toxic thin film solar cell. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the ratio (RAl:Ti) of Al source (Aluminum nitrate nonahydrate) to Ti source [Titanium diisopropoxide bis(acetylacetonate)] in the precursor solution of ATO and the thickness of MoOx have significant influences on solar cells. Moderate Al doping in ATO, e.g. RAl:Ti=1:50, can produce oxygen vacancies and accelerate the interfacial charge transfer, thus resulting in the increased short-circuit current density and fill factor. With the optimized Cu3BiS3 absorber, ETL and HTL, improved cell performances are observed comparted to the spin-coated Cu3BiS3 counterparts with CdS as ETLs in literature.

The aqueous Al-ion battery has achieved great progress in recent years. It now shows comparable performance to that of even non-aqueous Al-ion batteries. However, it also shows relatively low energy output and there is limited general understanding of the mechanism behind this restriction to its practical application. Thus, the development of a high-performance cathode material is in great demand. Herein, a high-capacity single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) is developed as a cathode for the water-in-salt electrolyte-based aqueous Al-ion battery, which provides an ultra-high specific capacity of 790 mAh g –1 ( based on the mass of SWCNT ) at a high current density of 5 A g –1 even after 1000 cycles. Moreover, the SWCNT/Al battery shows a complicated multi-ion intercalation mechanism, where AlCl 4 – , Cl – , Al 3+ , and H + can function at the same time, improving the battery output. Beyond recently revealed H + and metal ion co-intercalation, the Cl-assisted intercalation of Al 3+ ions mechanism is also studied by experimental characterization and modeling for the first time, which significantly boosts the Al 3+ storage capacity. This multi-ion intercalation mechanism combines the high-voltage anion deintercalation and the high-capacity cation intercalation, and thus, benefits the development and application of high-energy Al-ion batteries in the future.

The propensity for leaks in high-temperature molten alloys greatly restricts their extensive use in storing high-temperature thermal energy. In tackling this matter, the research concentrates on Al-Si/AlN composite phase change materials (PCMs), incorporating the modifier Sb to significantly improve their heat conduction and thermal steadiness. The results reveal that incorporating Sb alters the Si phase from a bulk form to an elongated one, simultaneously triggering the creation of an Al-Si@Al 2 O 3 core-shell configuration. This structural optimization reduces free electron scattering and extends the mean free path of electrons, thereby improving the thermal conductivity of the material. It was established that the ideal fraction of Sb mass is 0.6 %, where the thermal conductivity of the Sb-altered Al-Si/AlN composite PCMs attains 49.5 W/(m·K), marking a 15.2 % enhancement over the original Al-Si/AlN composite PCMs, with a latent heat of 351.5 kJ/kg. Additionally, the creation of the Al 2 O 3 shell led to the altered materials showing remarkable thermal stability across 200 high-temperature thermal cycles, resulting in less than a 4 % decrease in latent heat post-cycle and no leakage detected. The study offers not just an innovative approach for creating advanced Al-Si/AlN composite PCMs but also broadens their use in storing thermal energy at high temperatures.

Antibiotic resistance poses a major challenge to modern healthcare and requires innovative microbial control strategies. Here, we report a novel method for integrating aluminum-doped copper sulfide (CuS@Al) microspheres into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix by electrospinning to obtain multifunctional nanofiber membranes with both photothermal and photodynamic antimicrobial properties (PVA-CuS@Al). Based on the rational design of Al doping to form structural defects on CuS microspheres, the light absorption and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were significantly enhanced. Under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation (808 nm, 2.0 W/cm²), PVA-CuS@Al with 5 wt% CuS@Al achieved rapid temperature rise from 25 °C to 181 °C within 15 s, and complete inactivation of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was achieved within 10 min by photothermal ablation. In addition, under simulated sunlight, the membrane effectively generates ROS, achieving 100 % bacterial inhibition through photodynamic effects. The performance of the material goes beyond previous studies by combining dual antibacterial mechanisms on a single platform, reducing the required additive concentration (3 wt% CuS@Al), while maintaining biocompatibility and blood compatibility. This work introduces the development strategy of a new generation of antibacterial wound dressing with high efficiency and low cytotoxicity.

High-nickel layered oxide LiNi 0.9 Co 0.1 O 2 is a promising cathode material for lithium-ion batteries due to its high specific capacity and low cost. However, the internal stress generated during deep delithiation can cause microcracks, giving rise to rapid capacity decay and deteriorated thermal stability. In this work, Mg and Al ions are incorporated into the bulk phase of LiNi 0.9 Co 0.1 O 2 via high-temperature solid-state reaction. We demonstrate that Al 3+ doping enhances charge transfer between transition metal (TM) and oxygen layers, strengthening TM-O bonds and stabilizing the structure, thereby alleviating structural distortions under deep delithiation. More impressively, Mg 2+ doping significantly improves structural stability through a pillaring effect, effectively suppressing irreversible phase transitions during charge-discharge cycling. Consequently, Mg-Al co-doping optimizes the overall structural integrity of the high-nickel cathode, enhances its stability, and inhibits lattice oxygen release during long-term cycling. The Mg-Al co-doped LiNi 0.9 Co 0.1 O 2 delivers a remarkable capacity of 177.3 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles with capacity retention of 93.5 %, demonstrating outstanding cyclability. This Mg-Al co-doping strategy provides a simple and practical approach to enhance the electrochemical performance of high-nickel layered cathode materials.

Immobilizing the activator on the carrier is an effective strategy to solve the difficult recovery and secondary pollution of activator in advanced oxidation process. In this study, cobalt–aluminum-layered double hydroxide (activator) was immobilized on a PU membrane carrier (Co–Al-LDH@PU membrane) by a hydrothermal in situ growth technique to form a recyclable peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator. The as-prepared Co–Al-LDH@PU membrane exhibited an excellent ability to activate PMS for the removal of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). 97.20% of TC (30 mg L −1 ) was eliminated with Co–Al-LDH@PU membrane (3 × 3 cm 2 ) and 1.6 mM PMS at pH 5.5 in 30 min. Singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was verified as dominant reactive oxygen species responsible for TC removal via quenching tests. Mechanism investigation suggested that the redox cycle of Co 2+ /Co 3+ on the surface of Co–Al-LDH@PU membrane was crucial for PMS activation. Meanwhile, Co–Al-LDH@PU membrane displayed the ideal reusability and versatility.

In industry, it is highly desired to prepare Al-rich hierarchical zeolites by conventional alkali treatment without the use of costly chemical and special process. Here we provide an alternative strategy in which crystal defects are employed as mesopore directing agents. The effective elimination of the intracrystalline defects induces the generation of mesoporous structure in the alkali treatment process. Thus, the limitation originating from the framework Si/Al ratio of parent zeolite is circumvented. This strategy holds all merits of the conventional alkali treatment approach, which is industrially unfavorable. As an example, the Al-rich hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites with very low Si/Al ratios were successfully prepared. The obtained Al-rich hierarchical zeolites were characterized by XRD, XRF, SEM, TEM, N 2 adsorption-desorption, in-situ IR, MAS NMR and NH 3 -TPD. The results showed that Si/Al ratios of the prepared hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites were around 10 and the increases of external surface area and mesoporous volume were up to 2.6 and 3.7 times respectively in comparison with parent zeolite. Moreover, the constructed mesopores were interconnected open channels. In the catalytic cracking of 1,3,5-triisopropylbenzene, the Al-rich hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites exhibited an excellent performance because of the improved diffusion of reactant and product.

SiC-based porous ceramic wave-absorbing materials have attracted much attention due to their excellent properties such as low density, high-temperature resistance, and oxidation resistance. In this work, the impedance matching of SiC ceramics is improved by introducing Si 3 N 4 wave-transparent phase, and the dielectric loss capability of SiC ceramics is enhanced by introducing FeSi wave loss phase. To achieve a balance between impedance matching and absorption loss in porous ceramics, different molar contents of Al were introduced into FeSi to tailor electromagnetic parameters. The effects of introducing FeAl x Si 1− x on the phase composition, microstructure, dielectric loss, and microwave absorption mechanism of SiC–Si 3 N 4 porous ceramics were systematically investigated. When FeAl 0.25 Si 0.75 is added, the minimum reflection loss of the porous ceramics is as low as −58.02 dB, and the flexural strength is as high as 87.23 MPa. The presence of Al promotes the transformation of the Si 3 N 4 crystal and the generation of Al 2 O 3 . The introduction of FeAl 0.25 Si 0.75 into SiC–Si 3 N 4 has constructed “inductor–capacitor–resistance” microcircuit, which enhances polarization loss, conductivity loss, and magnetic loss, and realized the double enhancement of the mechanical and wave-absorbing properties of porous ceramics.
