Enhanced selective photocatalytic reduction and oxidation of perfluorooctanoic acid on Bi/Bi5O7I decorated with poly (triazine imide)

Jia Huang,Yunjie Zou,Lan Ling

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is detected widely in surface and groundwater globally. Its removal poses a significant challenge due to its high chemical stability. This study demonstrates efficient PFOA degradation using poly-triazine-imides-tailored defective Bi 5 O 7 I (PTI/BB). Under 300 W Xe irradiation, 1 µg·L −1 PFOA could be degraded to 9.86 ng·L −1 after 3 h in the presence of 0.5 g·L −1 25 % PTI/BB. The mechanism investigation reveals that the oxygen vacancy (OV) in partially reduced Bi/Bi 5 O 7 I (BB) generates impurity states, enhancing the light-harvesting capacity. Furthermore, forming a type Ⅱ heterojunction between conjugated PTI and BB facilitates the efficient separation of photogenerated carriers. The resulting photogenerated electrons (reduction) and holes (oxidation) drive hydrogenation reduction and oxidative decarboxylation of PFOA, respectively. This synergistic effect consequently achieves significant defluorination of PFOA. The proposed PFOA degradation pathway via the PTI/BB catalyst offers new insights into the catalyst design for photocatalytic degradation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

Enhancing grain boundary contributions to improve the dielectric properties of (In0.5Nb0.5)0.05Ti0.95O2 ceramics by Bi aided sintering

Panpan Xu,Congli Guo,Wentao Hao,Li Sun,Ensi Cao

The internal barrier layer capacitance effect substantially contributes to the colossal permittivity in In and Nb co-doped TiO 2 (INTO) ceramics. Therefore, enhancing grain boundary density and ceramic compactness can efficaciously reduce their low-frequency dielectric loss . In this investigation, Bi 2 O 3 addition was utilized to aid sintering and refine grains for INTO ceramics. The results reveal that Bi-doped INTO ceramics, in contrast to their undoped counterparts, exhibit a more refined and compact grain structure with a significant increase in the quantity of grain boundaries. Moreover, a noticeable reduction in low-frequency dielectric loss from above 0.1 to below 0.05 and enhanced frequency stability of permittivity from below 10 Hz to approximately 10 kHz were observed, along with a decrease in the sintering temperature to 1300 °C. In comparison to undoped INTO ceramics, Bi doping also enhances the withstand voltage capability by a factor of 1.5–4 for Bi-doped INTO ceramics. However, as the sintering temperature of Bi-doped INTO ceramics increases and the grain size enlarges, their breakdown voltage gradually decreases, but the non-linear coefficient of current-voltage characteristics progressively increases. Analysis of complex impedance spectra confirms that the increased grain boundary density and resistance in Bi-doped INTO ceramics is the primary factor for the enhanced dielectric properties and withstand voltage capability.

Ideal Bi-Based Hybrid Anode Material for Ultrafast Charging of Sodium-Ion Batteries at Extremely Low Temperatures

Bai Jie,Jia Jian Hui,Wang Yu,Yang Chun Cheng,Jiang Qing

Sodium-ion batteries have emerged as competitive substitutes for low-temperature applications due to severe capacity loss and safety concerns of lithium-ion batteries at − 20 °C or lower. However, the key capability of ultrafast charging at ultralow temperature for SIBs is rarely reported. Herein, a hybrid of Bi nanoparticles embedded in carbon nanorods is demonstrated as an ideal material to address this issue, which is synthesized via a high temperature shock method. Such a hybrid shows an unprecedented rate performance (237.9 mAh g−1 at 2 A g−1) at − 60 °C, outperforming all reported SIB anode materials. Coupled with a Na3V2(PO4)3 cathode, the energy density of the full cell can reach to 181.9 Wh kg−1 at − 40 °C. Based on this work, a novel strategy of high-rate activation is proposed to enhance performances of Bi-based materials in cryogenic conditions by creating new active sites for interfacial reaction under large current.

Activating inert non-defect sites in Bi catalysts using tensile strain engineering for highly active CO2 electroreduction

Chen Xingbao,Lu Ruihu,Li Chengbo,Luo Wen,Yu Ruohan,Zhu Jiexin,Lv Lei,Dai Yuhang,Gong Shanhe,Zhou Yazhou,Xiong Weiwei,Wu Jiahao,Cai Hongwei,Wu Xinfei,Deng Zhaohui,Xing Boyu,Su Lin,Wang Feiyue,Chao Feiyang,Chen Wei,Xia Chuan,Wang Ziyun,Mai Liqiang

Bi-defect sites are highly effective for CO 2 reduction (CO 2 RR) to formic acid, yet most catalytic surfaces predominantly feature inert, non-defective Bi sites. To overcome this limitation, herein, tensile strain is introduced on wholescale non-defective Bi sites. Under rapid thermal shock, the Bi-based metal-organic framework (Bi-MOF-TS) shows weakened Bi–O bonds and produced tiny Bi clusters. During electrochemical reduction, these clusters create numerous continuous vacancies, inducing weak tensile strain over a large range of surrounding non-defective Bi sites. This strain enhances *OHCO intermediates adsorption and substantially lowers the reaction barrier. As a result, Bi-MOF-TS achieves a faradaic efficiency above 90% across 800 mV potential range, with an impressive formate partial current density of −995 ± 93 mA cm −2 . Notably, Bi-MOF-TS exhibits a high HCOOH faradaic efficiency of 96 ± 0.64% at 400 mA cm −2 in acidic electrolyte and a high single-pass carbon conversion efficiency (SPCE) of 62.0%. Additionally, a Zn-CO 2 battery with Bi-MOF-TS as the cathode demonstrates a peak power density of 21.4 mW cm −2 and maintains stability over 300 cycles.

A Thermosensitive Bi-Adjuvant Hydrogel Triggers Epitope Spreading to Promote the Anti-Tumor Efficacy of Frameshift Neoantigens

Yaohua Ke,Kai Xin,Yaping Tao,Lin Li,Aoxing Chen,Jingyi Shao,Junmeng Zhu,Dinghu Zhang,Lanqi Cen,Yanhong Chu,Lixia Yu,Baorui Liu,Qin Liu

Tumor-specific frameshift mutations encoding peptides (FSPs) are highly immunogenic neoantigens for personalized cancer immunotherapy, while their clinical efficacy is limited by immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) and self-tolerance. Here, a thermosensitive hydrogel (FSP-RZ-BPH) delivering dual adjuvants R848 (TLR7/8 agonist) + Zn 2+ (cGAS-STING agonist) is designed to promote the efficacy of FSPs on murine forestomach cancer (MFC). After peritumoral injection, FSP-RZ-BPH behaves as pH-responsive sustained drug release at sites near the tumor to effectively transform the immunosuppressive TME into an inflammatory type. FSP-RZ-BPH orchestrates innate and adaptive immunity to activate dendritic cells in tumor-draining lymph nodes and increase the number of FSPs-reactive effector memory T cells ( T EM ) in tumor by 2.9 folds. More importantly, these T EM also exhibit memory responses to nonvaccinated neoantigens on MFC. This epitope spreading effect contributes to reduce self-tolerance to maintain long-lasting anti-tumor immunity. In MFC suppressive model, FSP-RZ-BPH achieves 84.8% tumor inhibition rate and prolongs the survival of tumor-bearing mice with 57.1% complete response rate. As a preventive tumor vaccine, FSP-RZ-BPH can also significantly delay tumor growth. Overall, the work identifies frameshift MFC neoantigens for the first time and demonstrates the thermosensitive bi-adjuvant hydrogel as an effective strategy to boost bystander anti-tumor responses of frameshift neoantigens.

Non-invasive fast assessment of hepatic injury through computed tomography imaging with renal-clearable Bi-DTPA dimeglumine

Ma Li,Pan Jinbin,Shu Gang,Pan Haiyan,Li Jingang,Li Dong,Sun Shaokai

Enhanced computed tomography (CT) imaging with iodinated imaging probes is widely utilized for the diagnosis and evaluation of various liver diseases. However, these iodine-based imaging probes face intractable limitations including allergic reactions and contraindications. Herein, we propose the utilization of renal-clearable iodine-free bismuth chelate (Bi-DTPA dimeglumine) for the non-invasive fast assessment of hepatic ischemia–reperfusion injury (HIRI) via CT imaging for the first time. Bi-DTPA dimeglumine offers several advantages such as simple synthesis, no purification requirement, a yield approaching 100%, large-scale production capability (laboratory synthesis > 100 g), excellent biocompatibility and superior CT imaging performance. In a normal rat model, the administration of Bi-DTPA dimeglumine resulted in a significant 63.79% increase in liver CT value within a very short time period (30 s). Furthermore, in a HIRI rat model, Bi-DTPA dimeglumine enabled the rapid differentiation between healthy and injured areas based on the notable disparity in liver CT values as early as 15 min post-reperfusion, which showed a strong correlation with the histopathological analysis results. Additionally, Bi-DTPA dimeglumine can be almost eliminated from the body via the kidneys within 24 h. As an inherently advantageous alternative to iodinated imaging probes, Bi-DTPA dimeglumine exhibits promising prospects for application in liver disease diagnosis.

Modified epoxy coatings based on BI@ZIF-8@TA for the application of long-effective corrosion protection

Bo Fang,Jie Xie,Dazhao Yu,Xinyue Zhang,Chaojie Jing,Hui Guo,Yuzhu Li,Wenzuo Li,Jie Liu

The hydrophilic benzimidazole@ZIF-8@tannic acid (ZBT) nanoparticles and the pH-responsive modified epoxy (EP) coatings based on ZBT were prepared innovatively. The result exhibited that the ZBT had excellent compatibility with the EP coatings, and the addition of ZBT improved the protective properties of the EP coatings, which were attributed to the formation of the Zn(OH) 2 deposition film, the inhibitor adsorption film and the ferric tannate film on the steel substrate. Meanwhile, the original adhesion and wet adhesion strengths of the ZBT/EP coatings were both enhanced, which was mainly attributed to the enhanced interaction between the ZBT/EP coatings and the carbon steel, and the crosslinking density and the degree of curing of the coatings were also improved. After 173 days of immersion, the impedance value of the ZBT coatings remained at 7.89 × 10 7  Ω·cm 2 , while the EP coatings decreased to 3.94 × 10 3  Ω·cm 2 . The wet adhesion loss of EP and ZBT/EP coatings was 63.6 % and 27.1 %, respectively. In the end, the protective mechanism of the ZBT/EP coatings was first proposed.

Multi-dimensional Bi@C electrocatalyst for Cr3+/Cr2+ redox reaction boosting high-performance iron-chromium flow batteries

Wu Min,Nan Mingjun,Liu Shumin,Zhong Caihe,Qiao Lin,Zhang Huamin,Ma Xiangkun

With the increasing demand for energy storage technology, iron-chromium flow batteries (ICFBs) have been widely concerned because of their price advantage. However, the low electrochemical activity of Cr 3+ /Cr 2+ redox couples and the side hydrogen evolution reaction limit the industrial application of ICFBs. A multi-dimensional Bi/carbon composite electrocatalyst (Bi@C) for ICFB is designed and prepared to improve the electrochemical activity of Cr 3+ /Cr 2+ redox couples. Benefiting by using the Bimetal organic framework (Bi-MOF) with solid matrix as precursors, Bi nanospheres are highly dispersed on the Bi@C electrocatalyst that effectively enhances the electrochemical activity. The special morphology of Bi@C electrocatalyst helps the transfer of electrons and ions, significantly reducing the polarization of battery. Herein, the 3D porous carbon frames accelerate mass transfer, and the 2D carbon nanobelts and carbon layer coating on 0D Bi nanospheres improve the conductivity of Bi nanospheres. Therefore, the ICFB with multi-dimensional Bi@C electrocatalyst exhibits coulombic efficiency of 98.10% and energy efficiency of 79.14% at 140 mA cm −2 , which is higher than ICFBs with commercial graphite carbon electrocatalyst and with heat treatment carbon felt. This work provides a simple and economical method to fabricate a high-performance multidimensional Bi@C electrocatalyst for Cr 3+ /Cr 2+ redox couples, boosting the development of ICFBs.

Trace copper and bi-nonmetallic (N/S) modified ketjenblack (KB) as advanced electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reactions

Liu Lvfei,Zhang Yao,Gu Yunjie,Qu Jiangwen,Wang Naiguang,Ge Shuaichen,Li Jingsha

The sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has been one of the most majority bottlenecks of fuel cells and metal-air batteries. It is extremely desirable but challenging to explore low cost, highly active, stable catalysts toward ORR to replace commercial Pt/C catalysts. Herein, a novel hybrid system consisting of trace copper and bi-nonmetallic (N/S) modified the commercial ketjenblack (KB) carbon (Cu–NS–C) has been successfully fabricated by a pyrolysis of Cu–MOF/KB and thiourea to transform crystalline Cu/Cu 2 O nanoparticles into copper sulfide nanoparticles and the subsequent acid leaching. The optimized Cu–NS–C delivers a half-wave potential of 0.81 V versus RHE and a limiting-current density of 5.0 mA cm −2 , which is next to those of commercial 20 wt% Pt/C catalyst. Furthermore, this catalyst demonstrates much better durability and methanol tolerance than Pt/C catalyst.

X-ray-activated ultra-long UVA persistent luminescence from a Bi-doped perovskite LaGaO3 for photodynamic activation

Bo-Mei Liu,Yue Lin,Yingchun Liu,Shanqing Zhang,Jing Wang,Hui Zhang,Jesse Zhu

Ultraviolet (UV) emitting persistent luminescence (PersL) materials have aroused significant interest, owing to their unique self-illuminating high-photo-energy feature under excitation-free conditions. In particular, the advent of X-rays as a charging source for UV PersL has facilitated the control of PersL properties and triggered a breakthrough in possible applications such as X-ray imaging techniques, phototherapy, photocatalysis, and optical information storage. Here, we present novel PersL materials that exhibit ultra-long UV emission for over 2000 h, as detected with a spectrometer. Experimental characterization revealed that the intrinsic oxygen vacancies associated with the local structure of the perovskite LaGaO3 can function as traps, which have super capabilities in energy collection and storage triggered by X-ray irradiation. Notably, this design concept is guided by utilizing an oxygen-defect perovskite as a host, which can serve as powerful guidance for expediting the discovery of new PersL materials. Moreover, due to excellent UV PersL performances, the proposed photodynamic therapy (PDT) platform LaGaO3:Bi,Sb@g-C3N4 demonstrates excellent PDT efficiency in vivo using low-dose X-ray irradiation. Our discovery of this UV PersL material is expected to provide directional solutions and novel perspectives for the development and application of UV luminescence technology.

Systematic investigation on the rational design and optimization of bi-based metal oxide semiconductors in photocatalytic applications

Yuan-Jun Song,Peng Xia,Xiao-Yang Zhang,Tong Zhang

To address the global energy shortage and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions on a massive scale, it is critical to explore novel and efficient photocatalysts for the utilization of renewable resources. Bi-based metal oxide (BixMOy) semiconductors composed of bismuth, transition metal, and oxygen atoms have demonstrated improved photocatalytic activity and product selectivity. The vast number of element combinations available for BixMOy materials provides a huge compositional space for the rational design and isolation of promising photocatalysts for specific applications. In this study, we have systematically investigated the electronic and optical properties over Bi2O3 and a series of selected BixMOy group materials (BiVO4, BiFeO3, BiCoO3, and BiCrO3) by calculating band structure, basic optical property features, mobility and separation of charge carriers. It is clearly noted that the band gap and band edge position of the BixMOy group materials can be tuned in a wide range in comparison to Bi2O3. Similarly, the light response of BixMOy also can be broadened from the ultraviolet to the visible light region by adjusting the selection of transition metals. Additionally, the analysis of the effective mass of charge carriers of these materials further confirms their possibility in photocatalytic reaction applications because of the appropriate separation efficiency and mobility of carriers. A selection of experimental investigations on the crystal structure, composition, and optical properties of Bi2O3, BiVO4, and BiFeO3 as well as their catalytic performance in the degradation of methylene blue over was also conducted, which agree well with the theoretical predictions.

Strengthening the activity and CO tolerance with bi-component PtNi/NbN-C catalyst for methanol alkaline electrooxidation

Xinyi Hu,Hui Xiong,Jiale Dou,Zhao Jiang

It is critical to create the anodic catalysts with high efficiency and economy for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Here, a series of PtNi/NbN-C catalysts (M=Co, Sn, Ni) are developed using the glycol solvothermal process, to investigate the catalytic effficiency for alkaline methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Catalytic performance evaluation experiments show that the doped Ni species bring the enhancement effect on Pt/NbN-C for the alkaline MOR. The mass activities of Pt x Ni y /NbN-C show a volcanic trend with the increased Ni contents. PtNi/NbN-C has the highest mass activity (6025.5 mA·mg -1 Pt ) for alkaline MOR, 18.3 times greater than that of the Pt/C commercial catalyst. The LSV, EIS, Tafel, CA and CO stripping results imply PtNi/NbN-C also exhibits the lowest onset potential, charge transfer resistance, fastest kinetics, highest CO tolerance and stability. When the XRD, HRTEM, and XPS analysis are combined, it is discovered that the electronic effect between the Pt, Ni, and NbN species is mostly responsible for the catalytic performance enhancement is mainly depend on the electronic effect among the Pt, Ni and NbN species. The presence of Pt in an electron-deficient state can enhance the conversion of adsorbed methanol and intermediates, evidenced by a direct relationship between the d -band centers and the mass activities for MOR of different catalysts. This study may provide guidance for the development of anodic materials for DMFCs.
