Efficient self-metathesis of 1-butene on molybdenum oxide supported on silica modified one-dimensional γ-Al2O3

Yuming Cui,Na Liu,Yifen Xia,Jiangang Lv,Sujuan Zheng,Nianhua Xue,Luming Peng,Xuefeng Guo,Weiping Ding

1-Butene, abundant but inexpensive in industry, can be used to produce more valuable propene and ethene through the well-known metathesis reaction. In terms of catalyst system of molybdena, controlling the interaction between the molybdena and the support is quite crucial. A special support, i.e., well-shaped one-dimensional γ-Al 2 O 3 with uniform diameters of ∼10   nm and lengths of ∼100   nm, has been synthesized via oleylamine-assisted hydrothermal method. The molybdenum oxides are well controlled in sizes of moderate aggregation suitable for 1-butene metathesis with a fairly high rate of propene production (38.9   ×   10 −9   mol   m −2   s −1 , 30   mol% yield in a single pass) under mild conditions. The status of MoO x species in the catalyst has been investigated by solid state 29 Si MAS NMR, Raman, UV–vis, H 2 -TPR and NH 3 -TPD techniques. The catalyst, highly stable after twelve times of regeneration, is important for practical utilization for the metathesis reactions.

Fabrication of a graphene/C60 nanohybrid via γ-cyclodextrin host–guest chemistry for photodynamic and photothermal therapy

Zhen Hu,Cheng Wang,Feng Zhao,Xirong Xu,Shuhong Wang,Long Yu,Dayu Zhang,Yudong Huang

The wonderful chemical structures and characteristics of low-dimensional carbon materials have exciting applications in life sciences. In the present study, we developed a facile strategy to conjugate C60 with graphene via host–guest chemistry for targeted phototherapy. A versatile carrier based on folic acid-functionalized graphene (GO-FA) and comprising γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) at its surface was assembled via π–π interaction, creating hybrid structures with drug storage and tumor targeting properties. This γ-CD-modified graphene (GO-FA/Py-γ-CD) is capable of hosting pristine C60 molecules for the fabrication of a GO-FA/Py-γ-CD/C60 nanohybrid. The hybridization of GO-FA, γ-CD, and C60 hinders the aggregation of C60, promotes cellular uptake, enhances light absorption, and finally demonstrates enhanced phototherapy effects of GO-FA/Py-γ-CD/C60. Under Xe lamp irradiation (2 W cm−2) for 4 min, GO-FA/Py-γ-CD/C60 simultaneously causes heating and intracellular ROS production, which further significantly reduces the cell viability to 16.2% at low content of loading (30 μg mL−1). Moreover, it represents an excellent tumor killing efficiency, better than that of the other reported graphene/C60 nanohybrids; thus, this material is suitable for applications in phototherapy of cancer.

Luminescent and Transparent Wood Composites Fabricated by Poly(methyl methacrylate) and γ-Fe2O3@YVO4:Eu3+ Nanoparticle Impregnation

Wentao Gan,Shaoliang Xiao,Likun Gao,Runan Gao,Jian Li,Xianxu Zhan

Natural wood is functionalized using the index matching poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and luminescent γ-Fe2O3@YVO4:Eu3+ nanoparticles to form a novel type of luminescent and transparent wood composite. First, the delignified wood template was obtained from natural wood through a lignin removal process, which can be used as a support for transparent polymer and phosphor nanoparticles. Then, the functionalization occurs in the lumen of wood, which benefits from PMMA that fills the cell lumen and enhances cellulose nanofiber interaction, leading to wood composites with excellent thermal properties, dimensional stability, and mechanical properties. More importantly, this wood composite displays a high optical transmittance in a broad wavelength range between 350 and 800 nm, magnetic responsiveness, and brightly colored photoluminescence under UV excitation at 254 nm. The unique properties and green nature of the luminescent wood composite have great potential in applications including green LED lighting equipment, luminescent magnetic switches, and anti-counterfeiting facilities.

γ-Ray-Radiation-Scissioned Chitosan as a Gene Carrier and Its Improved in vitro Gene Transfection Performance

Lin Fu-xing,Zeng Kun,Yang Wen-xiu,Wang Mo-zhen,Rong Jie-lin,Xie Juan,Zhao Yu,Ge Xue-wu

Chitosan (CS) is expected to be an ideal gene carrier for its high biosafety. In this work, CS with low molecular weight were prepared through the γ -ray radiation on the acetic acid solution of CS. The CS chains were scissioned under the γ -ray radiation, and the molecular weight (MW) of CS decreased with the absorbed dose. When the absorbed dose was above 30 kGy, the molecular weight of CS decreased about an order of magnitude. The γ -ray-radiation-scissioned CS can effectively bind with plasmid (pEGFP) through complex coacervation method, forming pEGFP/ γ -ray-radiation-scissioned CS complex particles with a size of 200–300 nm. The complex particles have good stability and little cytotoxicity. The in vitro gene transfection efficiencies of the pEGFP/ γ -ray-radiation-scissioned CS complex particles were investigated by fluorescence microscope and flow cytometry. The results showed that the gene vectors using γ -ray-radiation-scissioned CS as the carrier will possess better gene transfection efficiency than those using natural high-MW CS as the carrier. The higher the absorbed dose, the smaller the MW of CS and the better transfection efficiency of the corresponding gene vector. This work provides a green and simple method on the preparation of CS-based gene vectors with high efficiency and biosafety.

The preparation of poly(γ-glutamic acid)-NHS ester as a natural cross-linking agent of collagen

Junhui Yang,Cuicui Ding,Liulian Huang,Min Zhang,Lihui Chen

γ-PGA-NHS ester, which was prepared using poly(γ-glutamic acid) (γ-PGA) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) as the raw materials, was synthesized to be a novel cross-linker of collagen. Fourier transform infrared spectra analysis suggested that the products displayed the characteristic absorption peak of ester. Results from nuclear magnetic resonance analysis indicated that the esterification degree of γ-PGA-NHS ester was increased with the increase of NHS. Modified collagen was prepared and characterized. The results of circular dichroism analysis indicated modified collagen retained the triple helix structure of natural collagen. Sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis revealed that the molecular weight of collagen was increased after cross-linking. Peptide mapping of collagen suggested that cross-linked collagen possessed an enhanced resistance to trypsin degradation. Differential scanning calorimeter results showed that the denaturation temperature of collagen was improved from 68.1   ±   0.4 to 91.2   ±   0.5   °C (p   <   0.05). Dynamic viscoelastic measurements demonstrated the improvement of thermal stability and reflected the exponential increase in η*. The cross-linked collagen retained porous structure and the pore size became larger as observed by scanning electron microscopy. The investigation results provided useful information to produce collagen with improved physicochemical properties, particularly the thermal stability via the use of γ-PGA-NHS ester as a biomacromolecule-based cross-linker.

Catalytic conversion of xylose and corn stalk into furfural over carbon solid acid catalyst in γ-valerolactone

Tingwei Zhang,Wenzhi Li,Zhiping Xu,Qiyu Liu,Qiaozhi Ma,Hasan Jameel,Hou-min Chang,Longlong Ma

A novel carbon solid acid catalyst was synthesized by the sulfonation of carbonaceous material which was prepared by carbonization of sucrose using 4-BDS as a sulfonating agent. TEM, N 2 adsorption–desorption, elemental analysis, XPS and FT-IR were used to characterize the catalyst. Then, the catalyst was applied for the conversion of xylose and corn stalk into furfural in GVL. The influence of the reaction time, temperature and dosage of catalyst on xylose dehydration were also investigated. The Brønsted acid catalyst exhibited high activity in the dehydration of xylose, with a high furfural yield of 78.5% at 170   °C in 30   min. What’s more, a 60.6% furfural yield from corn stalk was achieved in 100   min at 200   °C. The recyclability of the sulfonated carbon catalyst was perfect, and it could be reused for 5   times without the loss of furfural yields.

γ-Radiation fabrication of porous permutite/carbon nanobeads/alginic acid nanocomposites and their adsorption properties for Cs+

Ling Chang,Shuquan Chang,Wei Han,Wei Chen,Zheng Li,Zheng Zhang,Yaodong Dai,Da Chen

Novel porous permutite/carbon nanobeads/amidated alginic acid nanocomposites were successfully fabricated via a gamma radiation method. The carbon nanobeads are 40–60 nm in diameter. The cross-linked amidated alginic acid is well dispersed on the surface of carbon nanobeads and permutite. The preparation parameters such as reactant ratio, carbonization conditions and radiation dose were optimized. The influences of contact time, pH and initial concentration of the Cs+ solution were investigated. Contact time = 4 h and pH = 9 are ideal conditions for Cs+ removal. The Cs+ removal efficiency and adsorption capacity can reach 98% and 60.1 mg g−1 respectively. They have good stability and adsorption–desorption properties. The adsorption capacity can maintain more than 85% after 4 adsorption–desorption cycles. The preparation strategy and adsorption mechanism were also discussed. Gamma radiation technology exhibits distinguished advantages to improve the dispersion and stability of organic/inorganic hybrid materials. This method can be easily applied to prepare other similar porous hybrid adsorbents.

Hierarchical hollow nanostructured core@shell recyclable catalysts γ-Fe2O3@LDH@Au25-x for highly efficient alcohol oxidation

Shuangtao Yin,Jin Li,Hui Zhang

A series of honeycomb-like hierarchical hollow nanostructured magnetic catalysts, γ-Fe2O3@M3Al-LDH@Au25-x (x represents determined mass of gold in wt%), have been successfully fabricated by modified electrostatic adsorption of water-soluble captopril-capped Au25 nanoclusters (Au25Capt18) on pre-prepared magnetic supports, Fe3O4@M3Al-LDH (M = Ni, Mg, or Cu/Mg (0.5/2.5), LDH: layered double hydroxide) followed by proper calcination. The characterization results show that the low Au-loading samples, γ-Fe2O3@Ni3Al-LDH@Au25-x (x = 0.053, 0.11), show nearly atomically precise Au25 nanoclusters (Au25NCs) (∼1.4 ± 0.3–1.9 ± 0.6 nm) dispersed on the surface of the Ni3Al-LDH shell, while the catalysts, γ-Fe2O3@M3Al-LDH@Au25-x (x ∼ 0.2), display slightly aggregated Au25NCs on the LDH shell with sizes of ∼3.0 ± 1.3, 3.3 ± 1.2, and 4.2 ± 1.5 nm for Ni-, Mg-, and CuMg-based catalysts, respectively, related to varied synergy between Au25NCs and magnetic LDH supports at slightly higher Au loadings. All the γ-Fe2O3@M3Al-LDH@Au25-x catalysts exhibit much higher catalytic activity for the oxidation of 1-phenylethanol under atmospheric O2, without basic additives, in toluene than Fe3O4@Mg3Al-LDH@Au prepared by a traditional deposition–precipitation method. The catalyst, γ-Fe2O3@Ni3Al-LDH@Au25-x, presents even higher alcohol oxidation activity than γ-Fe2O3@Mg3Al-LDH@Au25-0.21 and γ-Fe2O3@Cu0.5Mg2.5Al-LDH@Au25-0.2 and, particularly, γ-Fe2O3@Ni3Al-LDH@Au25-0.053 exhibits the highest activity (TOF: 112 498 h−1) for the aerobic oxidation of 1-phenylethanol under solvent-free conditions and can be applied for a variety of alcohols, this being mainly attributed to its nearly atomically precise Au25NCs and remarkable Au25NCs–LDH–magnetic core three-phase synergistic interaction, along with its abundant Ni-OH sites. Moreover, γ-Fe2O3@Ni3Al-LDH@Au25-0.053 can be easily separated, by simply applying an external magnetic field, and reused for more than ten runs without significant loss of activity, giving the magnetic catalysts long-term stability. These observations make Fe3O4@LDH a universal green platform to support other noble or non-precious metal nanoparticles by using a metal nanocluster precursor method to construct desired metal-loaded ecofriendly catalysts that can be applied in a broad range of heterogeneous catalysis processes.

Tunable volatile release from organogel-emulsions based on the self-assembly of β-sitosterol and γ-oryzanol

Xiao-Wei Chen,Ya-Jun Chen,Jin-Mei Wang,Jian Guo,Shou-Wei Yin,Xiao-Quan Yang

A current challenge in the area of food emulsion is the design of microstructure that provides controlled release of volatile compounds during storage and consumption. Here, a new strategy addressed this problem at the fundamental level by describing the design of organogel-based emulsion from the self-assembly of β -sitosterol and γ -oryzanol that are capable of tuning volatile release. The results showed that the release rate ( v 0 ), maximum headspace concentrations ( C max ) and partition coefficients ( k a / e ) above structured emulsions were significantly lower than unstructured emulsions and controlled release doing undergo tunable though the self-assembled interface and core fine microstructure from internal phase under dynamic and static condition. This result provides an understanding of how emulsions can behave as delivery system to better design novel food products with enhanced sensorial and nutritional attributes.

Improved acid recovery performance by novel Poly(DMAEM-co-γ-MPS) anion exchange membrane via diffusion dialysis

Abhishek N. Mondal,Congliang Cheng,Muhammad Imran Khan,Md. Masem Hossain,Kamana Emmanuel,Liang Ge,Bin Wu,Yubin He,Jin Ran,Xiaolin Ge,Noor Ul Afsar,Liang Wu,Tongwen Xu

Rapid development of diffusion dialysis based on anion exchange membranes (AEMs) established its prominent significance as a leading candidate in the field of separation science and technology. AEM-based diffusion dialysis (DD) processes intended to acid recovery have generated much interest due to their exclusive selectivity. Here, we report the effects of novel Poly(DMAEM-co-γ-MPS)-based AEMs for DD applications (acid recovery). Free radical polymerization was successfully done with the initiator azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) to achieve the desired polymer Poly(DMAEM-co-γ-MPS). Finally, quaternization with EPTAC and methyl iodide was done to make the membrane matrix charged. The dosage of Poly(DMAEM-co-γ-MPS) inside membrane matrix plays a crucial role to determine the physiochemical and electrochemical properties of the prepared membranes. The influence of Poly(DMAEM-co-γ-MPS) on the acid recovery behavior of the membranes was explored in detail. The prepared membranes displayed high thermo-mechanical stability. At 25   °C, the acid dialysis coefficient (U H ) values were between 0.016–0.029   m/h, while the separation factors (S) ranged from 23.3 to 87.7. Both the acid recovery (7.25 times) and separation factors (~3.6 times) are much higher than the commercial fiber supported anion exchange membrane DF-120B (U H and S=0.004   m/h and 24.3, respectively). Prepared AEMs are the potent candidate for acid recovery via diffusion dialysis. The highlight of this work is the fabrication of new AEMs, which shows high acid dialysis performance and selectivity.

Fully upgrade bamboo biomass into three multifunctional products through biphasic γ-valerolactone and aqueous phosphoric acid pretreatment

Leyu Zhu,Wenzhi Li,Xia Zhang,Liqun Wang,Jingting Jin,Zheng Zhou,Lulu Zhang

In this manuscript, three components of lignocellulosic biomass were obtained by deconstructing bamboo with γ-valerolactone-H 2 O biphasic system, and the delignification rate of 80.92 % was achieved at 120 °C for 90 min. Lignin nanospheres with diameters ranging from 75 nm to 2 um could be customized by varying the self-assembly rate. Furthermore, the lignin nanospheres-poly(vinyl alcohol) film was prepared by cross-linking lignin nanospheres and poly(vinyl alcohol), which can obtain 90 % ultraviolet absorption capacity, while the light transmittance in non-ultraviolet band was almost unchanged. At the same time, due to the strong hydrogen formation between lignin nanospheres and poly(vinyl alcohol) bond network, the tensile properties of the composite film were also improved by 30 %. Besides, the high specific surface area of biomass-derived porous biochar (2056 m 2 /g) can be obtained after carbonization of solid residues at 850 °C for 2 h, which was almost 8 times the specific surface area of the direct biomass carbonization due to the removal of lignin and hemicellulose. biomass-derived porous biochar can be used as an adsorbent, with a CO 2 capture capacity of 4.5 mmol g −1 at normal temperature (25 °C, 1 bar). The filtrate after the reaction contained a large amount of hemicellulose oligomers, which can be reacted with dichloromethane at 170 °C for 1 h to obtain the furfural yield of 74 %. In summary, the proposed biorefinery scheme achieves a full-component upgrade of lignocellulose and can be further applied in various downstream fields.

Foamed ceramic based γ-Al₂O₃ coated catalysts with different preparation methods for ethyl nicotinate hydrogenation reaction

Fuxin Liang,Yulin Wei,Yuhang Du,Fan Yang,Zhe Pang,Junyan Wu,Sai Huang,Honglei Wang,Qinggang Li,Chao Wu,Guopu Shi

This study investigated the catalytic hydrogenation of ethyl nicotinate using Pd/Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 foam ceramic catalysts prepared via sol-gel impregnation (SI), sol-gel precipitation (SP), precipitation-impregnation (PI), and co-precipitation (CP). We aimed to evaluate the performance and stability of these catalysts as coatings on foam ceramic surfaces in a high-pressure hydrogen reactor at 403 K and 5 MPa. Various physicochemical characterization methods were employed to correlate catalytic performance with physicochemical properties. Results indicated that sol-gel prepared supports had higher specific surface areas, more acidic sites, and better metal-carrier interactions compared to the precipitation method. SEM analyses revealed flatter and smoother coatings from the sol-gel method, while TEM showed uniform Pd distribution with impregnation. Ultimately, the SI method provided the best catalytic performance with a conversion of 86.77 %. The conversion of the substrate remained above 80 % after five cycles.
