The electrocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) represents a pivotal step in facilitating the industrialization of bio-based polyesters. While nickel sulfides are widely regarded as promising electrode materials for HMF oxidation (HMFOR), systematic research regarding their structural stability under anodic conditions and the identification of their true active species remains insufficient. Herein, we employ cyclic voltammetry (CV) pretreatment as a controllable strategy to investigate the electrochemical oxidative reconstruction of NiS x in an alkaline environment by regulating the upper-potential (ranging from 0.9–1.4 to 0.9–1.8 V vs. RHE). This approach elucidates the structure-activity relationship between the degree of reconstruction and HMFOR performance. The results demonstrate that NiS x undergoes surface sulfur oxidation even at relatively mild potentials. As the upper potential increases, the initial spherical structure gradually reconstructs into NiO x -rich nonosheet structures, accompanied by an increased population of Ni 3+ species, accelerated charge transfer kinetics and significantly enhanced electrochemically active surface area. Specifically, moderate reconstruction (e.g., at an upper potential of 1.7 V) achieves an optimal balance between structural stability and the abundance of Ni 3+ active sites, thereby yielding superior HMF conversion efficiency and FDCA selectivity. Conversely, insufficient or excessive potentials result in a scarcity of active sites or structural collapse, respectively. These findings provide fresh insights into the evolutionary mechanism of sulfide-based catalysts during anodic reactions and offer an effective strategy for constructing high-performance HMFOR electrocatalytic systems via potential-regulated reconstruction.

Coal gangue, the primary solid waste generated during coal mining, is mainly composed of silicon and aluminum oxide. Achieving its high-value utilization is crucial for resource recycling and sustainable development. In this study, we developed a method to synthesize ZSM-5 zeolite (ZSM-5-CG) using coal gangue as the sole silica–alumina source. The synthesis process, crystal growth mechanism, and catalytic performance of the resulting zeolites were systematically investigated. Compared with ZSM-5 prepared from commercial raw materials (ZSM-5-C), the coal gangue-derived synthesis required a significantly lower amount of template due to the favorable interaction between gangue-derived species and the template. Although crystallization in both systems follows the “solid–liquid phase transformation” mechanism, coal gangue, as a natural mineral source, exhibits significant differences in Si and Al coordination environment compared to commercial inorganic raw materials. These differences alter the dissolution and migration behaviors of Si and Al species in the mother liquor, leading to a synchronous release of these components during crystallization. As a result, nucleation and crystal growth processes happen more slowly, yielding a lower overall growth rate than that observed in systems derived from commercial raw materials. The obtained ZSM-5-CG was further applied in CO2 cycloaddition and methanation reactions, exhibiting catalytic activity comparable to that of ZSM-5-C, owing to its abundance of acid sites and large surface area. A cost analysis revealed that the total production cost of ZSM-5-CG was 29.7% lower than that of ZSM-5-C. This work provides a novel and economically viable route for the high-value utilization of coal gangue and highlights the potential of ZSM-5-CG in CO2 catalytic conversion.

Light alkane aromatization represents a pivotal catalytic process for valorizing abundant light alkanes into high-value aromatics, holding significant industrial promise. Herein, a series of Ga-HZSM-5 catalysts were synthesized by the hydrothermal method. The effects of Ga content and Si/Al ratio on the catalytic performance of propane aromatization over Ga-HZSM-5 were investigated to discern the structure-activity relationship, reaction pathway, and coke formation. The optimized 1%Ga-HZSM-5(50) catalyst exhibited superior performance, with propane conversion and BTX formation showing a volcano-shaped trend with increasing Ga content. Conversely, for a fixed Ga loading, aromatization performance was enhanced with decreasing Si/Al ratio, with 1%Ga-HZSM-5(25) delivering the highest aromatization activity. A positive correlation was identified between catalytic activity and Lewis acid density, underscoring the role of Lewis sites in facilitating propane dehydrogenation and subsequent BTX formation. Furthermore, TG and TPO analyses revealed that the deposited coke in Ga-HZSM-5 was predominantly highly graphitized, which could not be removed by the air-regeneration treatment under reaction temperature.

Chronic administration of glucocorticoids are being linked to an increased risk of osteoporosis. 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) is a natural compound that possesses various biological activities, including osteogenic regulation. In this research, we sought to investigate the potential of 5-HMF to exert protective effects against glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. In cellular investigations, we deployed Western Blot (WB), Real-Time Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and Alizarin S-red (ARS) staining to scrutinize the expression of osteogenic differentiation markers within MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblasts and BMSCs. We used dexamethasone to establish a mouse model for glucocorticoid-Induced osteoporosis and administered 5-HMF to evaluate its influence on bone density and architecture through the use of micro-CT and histological analysis. In addition, we employed network pharmacology to elucidate the potential pathways and targets of 5-HMF. Finally, we explored the effect of AKT knockout on the treatment of 5-HMF. We found that 5-HMF significantly enhanced VEGFR2 phosphorylation, reestablishing angiogenesis and activating the PI3K/AKT pathway in vitro and in vivo. 5-HMF also inhibited Dexamethasone -induced apoptosis by regulating Bax and Bcl-2 expression. MK2206, an AKT inhibitor, abrogated 5-HMF’s protective properties against GCs. These results indicate that 5-HMF counteracts the negative effects of GCs on osteoblasts and has good bone-promoting differentiation effects.

Selective catalytic oxidation of nitrogen containing volatile organic compounds (NVOCs) is very meaningful but still remains big challenge because it is very difficult to balance the oxidation activity and N 2 selectivity of available catalysts. In order to develop excellent catalysts with high N 2 selectivity in wide temperature window ( △T ) during NVOCs oxidation, CeO 2 modified CuO/ZSM-5 catalysts with different CeO 2 addition order were prepared for diethylamine (DEA) oxidation. Detailed characterizations of catalysts such as XRD, XPS, H 2 -TPR and NH 3 -TPD were conducted, it is found that addition of CeO 2 obviously changes the geometrical and electronic states of CuO active sites in the catalyst, and CeO 2 addition order affects the Ce 3+ ratio on the catalyst surface. Promotion of CeO 2 species enables the generation of more highly active Cu species (Cu + species and finely dispersed CuO clusters) for DEA oxidation; and synergistic catalysis of the Ce 3+ species, active Cu species and acid sites in ZSM-5 leads to the high N 2 selectivity in wide temperature window ( △T ). Compared to the CeO 2 /CuO/ZSM-5 and CuO-CeO 2 /ZSM-5 catalysts, the CuO/CeO 2 /ZSM-5 catalyst exhibits moderate high oxidation activity with T 99 of 230 °C and the widest △T of 150 °C for high N 2 selectivity. Our primary results in this work provide the efficient strategy for improving catalyst employed for NVOCs selective oxidation.

Electrochemical oxidation of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a promising approach to produce high-value chemicals such as 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). However, the undesirable stability of catalysts commonly limits its potential application value. In this work, NiOOH derived from Ni(OH)2 was determined as the main catalytic site for HMF oxidation, but the collapse of Ni(OH)2 caused severe instability during the electrocatalytic process because of the crystal structure mismatch between NiOOH and Ni(OH)2. The implantation of Ce in Ni(OH)2 (Ce-Ni(OH)2) was successfully realized to address the stability issue of bare Ni(OH)2, since the larger ion radius of Ce could increase the Ni–O bond length and d-spacing. As a result, the activity of 14%Ce-Ni(OH)2 has not obviously decayed after the 50 cyclic voltammetry (CV)-cycle test. HMF conversion is close to 100%, and the Faraday efficiency (FE) reaches 86.6% at the potential of 0.45 V vs Ag/AgCl. This study provides a new strategy to design stable catalysts for the conversion of biomass derivatives.

Molten salt hydrate (MSH) is a good solvent for cellulose dissolution and an effective catalyst for cellulose conversion. In this work, a series of MSH was evaluated in terms of cellulose dissolvability, regeneration performance, and catalytic activity in cellulose conversion into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). ZnBr 2 ·3H 2 O–LiCl·3H 2 O showed good performance on cellulose dissolution and conversion. The effects of ZnBr 2 ·3H 2 O concentration, reaction temperature, and time on cellulose conversion into HMF in ZnBr 2 ·3H 2 O–LiCl·3H 2 O were optimized, and 48.7% HMF yield was reached at 60 wt.% ZnBr 2 ·3H 2 O. The species of ZnBr 2 ·3H 2 O–LiCl·3H 2 O were analyzed, and the function of species concentration was correlated with the product yield from the conversion of fructose. It was found that Br − and H + were the active species for fructose dehydration into HMF. ZnBr 3 − and H + catalyzed the conversion of fructose into furfural, which competed with the production of HMF. The reaction mechanism was proposed to understand the cooperate of species in MSH for cellulose conversion.

5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) production from cellulose is a hot topic, while the rigidity of cellulose limits its efficient conversion into HMF. Cellulose formate has exhibited the great potential for HMF production but it’s synthesis via direct formylation of cellulose in formic acid is difficult. Herein, we reported a green synthetic route of cellulose formate and its efficient conversion into HMF. Ball milled cellulose formate (BCF) was synthesized via ball milling followed by formylation in formic acid at 80 °C for 0.5 h. The structure of BCF was thoroughly characterized and BCF was subsequently converted to HMF catalyzed by AlCl 3 and HCl in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-H 2 O media. Results showed that ball milling of cellulose for 1–1.5 h efficiently deconstructed its crystallinity and degree of polymerization, boosting its further formylation and catalytic conversion. An overall 66.9% HMF yield from cellulose was achieved at 150 °C for 20 min using BCF derived from cellulose ball milled for 1.5 h as the substrate. BCF exhibits high reactivity toward HMF due to its excellent solubility and accessibility in DMSO-H 2 O media, and the release of formic acid in reaction further facilitates HMF production. BCF synthesized with different ball milling times shows different degrees of substitution of formyl groups, which could serve as an indicator and regulate the HMF production. The green synthesis of cellulose formate creates an efficient pathway for HMF production.

The search for non-noble metal catalysts for chemical transformations is of paramount importance. In this study, an efficient non-noble metal catalyst for hydrogenation, hexagonal close-packed cobalt (HCP-Co), was synthesized through a simple one-step reduction of β-Co(OH)2nanosheets via a temperature-induced phase transition. The obtained HCP-Co exhibited several-times-higher catalytic efficiency than its face-centered cubic cobalt (FCC-Co) counterpart in the hydrogenation of the C=C/C=O group, especially for the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) hydrogenation (8.5-fold enhancement). Density functional theory calculations demonstrated that HMF molecules were adsorbed more firmly on the (112_0) facet of HCP-Co than that on the (111) facet of FCC-Co, favoring the activation of the C=O group in the HMF molecule. The stronger adsorption on the (112_0) facet of HCP-Co also led to lower activation energy than that on the (111) facet of FCC-Co, thereby resulting in high activity and selectivity. Moreover, HCP-Co exhibited outstanding catalytic stability during the hydrogenation of HMF. These results highlight the possibility of fabricating hydrogenation catalysts with satisfactory catalytic properties by precisely tuning their active crystal phase.Keywords:phase-controlled;temperature-induced phase transition;HCP-Co;FCC-Co;hydrogenation

The electrocatalytic conversion of biomass into high-value-added chemicals is one of the effective methods of green chemistry. Conventional metal catalysts have disadvantages, such as low atomic utilization and small surface areas. Catalyst materials derived from metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have received much attention due to their unique physicochemical properties. Here, an MOF-derived non-precious metal CoxNiyS electrocatalyst was applied to the oxidation of biomass-derivative 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). The HMF oxidation reaction activities were modulated by regulating the content of Co and Ni bimetals, showing a volcano curve with an increasing proportion of Co. When the Co:Ni ratio was 2:1, the HMF conversion rate reached 84.5%, and the yield of the main product, 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), was 54%. The XPS results showed that the presence of high-valent nickel species after electrolysis, which further proved the existence and reactivity of NiOOH, as well as the synergistic effect of Co and Ni promoted the conversion of HMF. Increasing the content of Ni could increase the activity of HMF electrochemical oxidation, and increasing the content of Co could reduce the increase in the anodic current. This study has important significance for designing better HMF electrochemical catalysts in the future.Keywords:5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation;electrocatalysis;biomass conversion;2,5-furandicarboxylic acid;MOF-derived electrocatalyst

In this work, a Ni-based catalyst supported on a core–shell structure catalytic carrier material (Ni/ZSM-5@MCM-41) based on kaolinite tailings is reported, which exhibits excellent CO2 methanation performance at atmospheric pressure. At 400 °C, CO2 conversion and CH4 selectivity reach 80 and 97% with the space velocity of 12,000 mL gcat–1 h–1, respectively, and it can maintain good stability during the 80 h stability test. Compared with traditional Ni/ZSM-5 and Ni/MCM-41 catalysts, Ni/ZSM-5@MCM-41 has more substantial confinement effects on the active components, and the active components are more evenly dispersed on surface of the carrier. In addition, it is confirmed by the in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy technique that CO2 methanation over the Ni/ZSM-5@MCM-41 catalyst follows the path of formate and CO as intermediates.
