An electrochemical immunosensor comprising thionin/silver nanoparticles decorated KIT-6 for ultrasensitive detection of squamous cell carcinoma antigen

Yueyun Li,Yihe Zhang,Liping Jiang,Paul K. Chu,Ynhui Dong,Ping Wang

An ultrasensitive electrochemical immunosensor is designed and constructed for the quantitative detection of squamous cell carcinoma antigens (SCCAs). Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) hybridized and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane functionalized graphene sheets (Ag@APTES-GS) serve as the platform to immobilize primary antibodies (Ab1). The mesoporous AgNPs-decorated silica KIT-6 (Ag@KIT-6) with a large specific surface area is utilized to label the electron mediator thionin (TH) and secondary antibodies (Ab2) by physical adsorption and chemical bonding. Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) doped with ionic liquids (ILs) is used to facilitate electron transfer and prevent leaking of TH resulting in multiple signal amplification. In addition to the excellent detection limit (17 fg mL−1, S/N = 3) and wide linear range (5 × 10−5 ng mL−1 to 102 ng mL−1), the immunosensor shows good selectivity, reproducibility, and stability. Providing quantitative detection of SCCA in serum, the sensor has great potential in clinical and diagnostic applications.

Preparation, characterization, and catalytic performances of cobalt catalysts supported on KIT-6 silicas in oxidative desulfurization of dibenzothiophene

Sainan Wei,Huijun He,Yan Cheng,Chunping Yang,Guangming Zeng,Li Kang,Hui Qian,Canyao Zhu

Sulfur-containing compounds in oils are harmful to the ecosystem whose cost-effective removal is still a challenge. In this study, novel heterogeneous catalysts of cobalt supported on KIT-6 mesoporous silicas were prepared and evaluated for oxidative desulfurization (ODS) under ambient conditions using cyclohexanone peroxide (CYHPO) as the oxidant. The model oil was obtained via dissolving DBT in the n-octane. The conventional wet impregnation method was applied for the preparation of the catalysts, and cobalt nitrate was used as the precursor. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, N 2 -physisorption, FT-IR, TGA, SEM/TEM and XPS. Then their catalytic activities in total oxidation of dibenzothiophene (DBT) were evaluated at various conditions. DBT conversion by this heterogeneous ODS system reached 98.68%. Co/KIT-6 catalysts showed high ODS activity due to Ia3d mesoporous structure resulting in better cobalt dispersion, higher activity of Co, and faster diffusion of reactant and products. The Box-Behnken design showed that the optimum values for the conversion of DBT were 93   °C (oxidation temperature), 1.6   ×   10 −1   g (catalyst amount) and 5.7 (O/S molar ratio), respectively. The inhibitory effect of quinoline on ODS was higher than carbazole and indole, adding quinoline into model oil under same conditions led to a decrease of the conversion of DBT from 98.68% to 65.67% when the concentration of quinoline increased from 160   ppm to 4845   ppm. Kinetics data correlated well with the pseudo-first-order equation. These data showed that this novel Co/KIT-6 catalysis system has the potential to be applied in ODS from oils.

Isobaric vapor-liquid equilibrium for binary system of methyl caprate + methyl laurate at 2, 4 and 6 kPa

Hui Ding,Wenjing Ke,Dan Zhao,Lulu Wang,Yujie Gao,Shejiang Liu

In this work, we measured the isobaric vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data for the binary system of methyl caprate (1)   +   methyl laurate (2) at 2,4 and 6   kPa with a modified Othmer still. The point consistency test of Van Ness test method was applied to check the thermodynamic consistency of all the experimental values, which guaranteed the reliability of our measurements. Afterwards, the experimental data were regressed by two activity coefficient models (Wilson, NRTL). Furthermore, we made the data prediction with the group contribution method (UNIFAC) and the COSMO-SAC model. The results of all the regressions and predictions are satisfying and reasonable, while the results provided by the NRTL model are relatively better than the other three models, with the root mean square deviations of temperature and vapor-phase mole fraction less than 0.33   K and 0.0069, respectively.

Calix[6]arene-Functionalized Photonic Hydrogel Biosensor for Naked-Eye Cholesterol Detection Based on Supramolecular Host–Guest Interactions

Xi Wang,Jingjing Mu,Hairong Yu,Xingbin Lv,Ting Liang,Changjing Cheng

Cholesterol (CHO) is an essential constituent of human cellular tissues and a crucial activity indicator for the clinical diagnosis and prevention of various diseases. Abnormal CHO levels can lead to various cardiovascular diseases, including coronary heart disease, cerebral thrombosis, and atherosclerosis. Thus, developing simple and effective methods for CHO detection is of great significance. Herein, a novel calix[6]arene-modified photonic hydrogel biosensor (PAAH@SCX6) was developed for naked-eye monitoring of CHO based on supramolecular host–guest interactions between 4-sulfocalix[6]arene (SCX6) and CHO molecules. This sensor was constructed by embedding Fe3O4 colloidal nanocrystal cluster chains into a poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) smart hydrogel (PAAH), followed by incorporation of plentiful SCX6 units into the PAAH via hydrogen bonding interactions. The specific recognition of SCX6 to CHO leads to the volume expansion of the hydrogel, causing a shift in the photonic band gap and a change in the hydrogel’s structural color. The sensor demonstrated a linear detection range of 2.83–5.20 mM, covering the typical CHO levels in the human body. Importantly, the PAAH@SCX6 biosensor showed high selectivity and satisfactory stability, making it highly suitable for practical applications. Such a photonic hydrogel-based biosensor provides a convenient, simple, and efficient strategy for visual CHO detection.

Effect and mechanism of environmentally friendly depressant 2, 4-Diamino-6-hydroxypyrimidine in separation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite

Linquan Dai,Bo Feng,Mengyan Tang,Yuangan Chen

It is challenging to separate between molybdenite and chalcopyrite due to their comparable hydrophobic characteristics. Inorganic depressants were previously used to separate two minerals, but the results were unsatisfactory and polluted the environment. In this study, the molybdenite and chalcopyrite were separated using a highly effective and ecologically safe depressant, 2,4-Diamino-6-hydroxypyrimidine (DAHP). According to the single mineral experiment, chalcopyrite is totally depressed while molybdenite has superior floatability. The efficacy of DAHP as the depressant was validated by further artificially mixed mineral flotation experiments, indicating the possibility of separating chalcopyrite and molybdenite. The adsorption capacity experiment results showed that the adsorption capacity of DAHP on the surface of chalcopyrite was greater than that on the surface of molybdenite. Zeta potential experiment results show that DAHP is adsorbed on the surface of chalcopyrite and molybdenite through static electrostatic interactions . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) experiment results show that DAHP is mainly adsorbed on chalcopyrite surface through –NH 3 + group, which hinders the adsorption of kerosene. The electrostatic contact between DAHP and molybdenite has the least effect on kerosene adsorption. This study shows that DAHP has the potential to separate chalcopyrite and molybdenite as an efficient and environmentally friendly depressant.

Eco-corona enhanced the interactive effects of nanoplastics and 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate in zebrafish embryos

Shulin Liu,Muhammad Junaid,Chong Wang,Jun Wang

Nanoplastics (NPs, < 1000 nm) interact with chemicals and biomolecules to produce chemical−/eco-corona, altering the environmental destiny, bioavailability, and toxicity of plastic particles and co-occurring chemicals. This study employs exogenous (humic acid, HA) and endogenous (bovine serum albumin, BSA) natural organic matter (NOM) to investigate the eco-corona formation on NPs and explore the interfacial effects of eco-corona and 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (Cl-PFESA, commonly named as F-53B) on zebrafish ( Danio rerio ) after 7 days of exposure. Our results indicated significant changes in growth and developmental indices of zebrafish embryos among all eco-corona groups ( p  < 0.05). Additionally, NFB (BSA-corona, 1 mg/L NPs + 200 μg/L F-53B + 10 mg/L BSA), NFH (HA-corona, 1 mg/L NPs + 200 μg/L F-53B + 10 mg/L HA) and NFHB (BSA-HA-corona, 1 mg/L NPs + 200 μg/L F-53B + 10 mg/L BSA + 10 mg/L HA) showed elevated bioaccumulation of NPs, ROS generation and induction of apoptosis. Transcriptomic analysis showed the number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the following order: BSA-HA-corona (NFHB (2953) > HA-corona (NFH (2797) > NH (2721) > F-53B (2292) > NF (2033) > BSA-corona (NFB (687) > NB (450)), and no DEGs were detected in the single NP compared to the control. Further, the PI3K-AKT, immune system, endocrine system, digestive system, infectious diseases, and neurovegetative disease pathways showed sensitive responses in the NFH/NFHB groups compared to those in the NFB group. Therefore, the interactive effects of NPs and F-53B on zebrafish embryos were lower in the presence of BSA-corona than those in HA- or HA-BSA-coronas, indicating a relationship between the formation of diverse eco-coronas on NPs by multiple NOM and an associated increase in the interfacial toxicological effects of plastic particles and F-35B in freshwater organisms.

Glass fiber treated with a glycine bridged silane coupling agent reinforcing polyamide 6(PA6): effect of hydrogen bonding

Dinghua Yu,Jianqiang Wang,Guowei Wang

Silane coupling agents play an indispensable role in improving interfacial adhesion of composite materials, but their interaction mechanism is often unclear. This article combines experiments and theoretical calculations to reveal the importance of hydrogen bonds between silane coupling agents and the matrix polyamide 6 in improving the mechanical properties of composite materials. Firstly, glycine bridged silane (GBSilane) was synthesized and the structure was confirmed by FT-IR, 1H NMR and HRMS. Secondly, with glass fiber treated using GBSilane as a filler, the mechanical properties of glass fiber/PA6 composite materials were studied. Compared with untreated glass fiber/PA6 composites, under the optimal treatment concentration of 1.5%, the tensile strength of glass fiber/PA6 composites treated with 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) and GBSilane increased by 41% and 67%, respectively, and the notch impact strength increased by 55% and 96.5%, respectively. Lastly, density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that stronger hydrogen bonds have formed between GBSilane and PA6 than APTES, which have induced the stronger PA6–GBSilane binding energy of 58.20 kJ mol−1. By comparison, the binding energy of PA6–APTES is only 30.91 kJ mol−1. These results demonstrated that the as-synthesized GBSilane could improve the mechanical properties of PA6 composites through an enhanced hydrogen bonding mechanism.

Inhibitory mechanism of xanthine oxidase by 6-, 8- and 10-gingerol: Enzyme kinetics, multi-spectroscopy and molecular simulations

Rui Wang,Pei-Feng Guo,Jing Nie,Xing Hu,Yu-Wei Wu,Shu Zhu,Bo-Ru Chen,Jian Li,Xin-An Zeng,Fei-Yue Xu

In this study, the inhibitory activity and mechanism of three gingerols (6-, 8- and 10-gingerol) on xanthine oxidase (XOD), a key enzyme responsible for the formation of uric acid, were evaluated. The three gingerols reversibly inhibited XOD activity in a mixed manner with IC 50 values of (13.16 ± 0.41), (10.18 ± 0.22) and (6.88 ± 0.11) μM, respectively. 10-gingerol exhibited stronger inhibitory ability, which might contribute to its superior antioxidant properties, higher binding affinity and more significant conformational changes for XOD compared to other gingerols. Fluorescence quenching and molecular docking results indicated that gingerols acted in the vicinity of the flavin adenine dinucleotide in XOD, interacting with the surrounding key amino acid residues through hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces, thereby preventing substrate entry and the release of catalytic products. Molecular dynamics simulations showed that the addition of gingerol decreased the stability and increased the structural density of XOD. These findings could provide valuable data for the application of gingerols in new XOD inhibitors and hypouricemic functional foods.

K2Cu3(Fe(CN)6)2 In Situ-Modified MXene Nanosheets for Selective Enrichment of Cs+ and the Mechanism

Jinchang Zhang,Xuefeng Cheng,Jicai Jiang,Apiladda Pattanateeradetch,Shuai Shi,Chanat Chokejaroenrat,Qingfeng Xu,Jianmei Lu

Selective enrichment of cesium ions (Cs+) at ultralow concentrations is essential for resource recovery and radioactive waste disposal, yet efficient adsorbents are lacking. Herein, we reported a Prussian blue analogue (K2Cu3(Fe(CN)6)2, Cu-PBA) decorated on MXene nanosheets by in situ fabrication, forming a composite material termed PMX, for enhanced adsorption of Cs+ in acidic solutions and seawater. The stable, negatively charged MXene effectively anchors Cu2+ precursors and promotes Cs+ adsorption. The synergistic interaction between MXene and the in situ-synthesized Cu-PBA significantly enhances the adsorption performance and water stability of PMX in both acidic solutions and seawater. PMX achieves rapid adsorption equilibrium within 5 min, with a high adsorption capacity of 408.2 mg/g at pH 1, surpassing conventional adsorbents. Moreover, PMX shows excellent Cs+ selectivity (Kd = 68,361.7 mL/g), cycle stability, and notable anti-irradiation ability, demonstrating superior efficiency in Cs+ enrichment from complex matrices. The adsorption mechanism involves electrostatic attraction and K+/Cs+ ion exchange, facilitated by MXene’s functional groups and the Cu-PBA structure. These findings underscore the excellent potential of PMX as an efficient adsorbent for resource enrichment and the removal of radioactive elements such as Cs+.

Investigation of Non-covalent Interactions of 18-Crown-6 with Amino Acids in Gas Phase by Mass Spectrometry

Ruo-Fei WU,Yan-Dong HUANG,Yan-Qiu CHU,Zhi-Pan LIU,Chuan-Fan DING

The non-covalent interactions between 18-Crown-6 (18c6) and 20 common types of protonated amino acids were explored by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The mass spectra showed that 18c6 could react with amino acids to form a non-covalent complexe in a stoichiometric ratio of 1:1. The calibration curves and linear equations for the complexes of L -Phe, L -Tyr, L -Lys and L -Asp with 18c6 were established by mass spectrometric titration and used as reference values for competitive ESI-MS. Through competitive equilibria, the binding constants for the complexes of 18c6 with other L -amino acids and their D -isomers were derived. It was found that, as a general trend, lg K a for the complexes of 18c6 with the basic amino acid and the amino acid with alkyl side chain were larger than other complexes, and among the amino acid with alkyl side chain, Gly and Ala exhibited greater 18c6 binding affinities. As for Ser and Thr, the intramolecular hydrogen bond between the nitrogen atom from terminal –NH 2 and the oxygen atom from carboxyl might impede their protonated amino-group to attack the 18c6. Furthermore, Gln and Asn exhibited lower binding affinities to 18c6, probably due to effects of electron-withdrawing group of acylamide. Finally, the chiral selectivity of 18c6 for L -amino or D -amino acids were measured by ESI-MS, and the result showed that 18c6 could only recognize some neutral amino acid isomers.

The reactive compatibilization effect of copolymer macroactivator for immiscible anionic polyamide 6/polystyrene blends via in situ polymerization

Wenqi Wang,Jie Ying,Jikui Wang

In this article, a novel method has been successfully developed to prepare the anionic polyamide 6/polystyrene (APA6/PS) blends. The macroactivator P(St- co -IEM) was synthesized by the free radical polymerization of 2-isocyanatoethyl methacrylate and styrene (St), then the graft copolymer of PS and APA6 (PS- g -APA6) can be obtained by the anionic polymerization of ɛ-caprolactam activated by the macroactivator P(St- co -IEM). The X-ray diffraction analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy analysis, contact angle measurement, water absorption measurement, molau test, thermogravimetric analysis, and mechanical properties test were performed separately to study the effects of P(St- co -IEM) on crystallinity, morphology, water resistance, thermal stability, and mechanical properties. The results indicate the synthesis of macroactivator can promote the formation of the γ-phase. Moreover, it can improve the interfacial compatibility, water resistance, thermal stability, and toughness. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2018 , 135 , 46302.

Polyamide 6 composite nano-fiber/net functionalized by polyethyleneimine on quartz crystal microbalance for highly sensitive formaldehyde sensors

Bin Ding,Xianfeng Wang,Jianyong Yu,Moran Wang

A nanostructured complex, polyethyleneimine (PEI) functionalized polyamide 6 (PA 6) (PEI-PA 6) nano-fiber/net (NFN), is developed as a novel sensing coating on quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) for highly sensitive formaldehyde detection. The NFN structured substrate comprising common electrospun nanofibers and two-dimensional (2D) spider-web-like nano-nets fabricated by a facile electro-spinning/netting (ESN) process, exhibit large specific surface area, high porosity and large stacking density, which make them optimal candidates for sensing applications. The responses of the sensors in response to formaldehyde were analyzed in terms of PA 6 NFN membranes morphologies, PA 6 substrate and sensing PEI coating loads, and the comparison with nanoporous fibers. Experimental results show that this new PEI-PA 6 NFN nanostructure based QCM sensor exhibits excellent formaldehyde sensing performances in terms of remarkably low detection limit (50 ppb), rapid response, superior selectivity and good reproducibility. We expect the highly sensitive and robust NFN-based QCM sensor may serve as a practical and powerful tool for gas sensing and chemical analysis.
