Ocular blood oxygen saturation is critical for detecting vision-threatening and systemic diseases. Existing wearable oxygen sensors are unsuitable for ocular use, and current ocular SpO₂ measurements rely on bulky equipment. This work introduces a flexible plasmonic nano-confinement (PNC) nanowire photodetector, based on a PNC nanowire array consisting of highly aligned and ordered PEDOT:PSS nanowires with embedded gold nanoparticles, for high-sensitivity oxygen saturation sensing. The PNC nanowire array acts as an anode interfacial modification layer, where nanowire-geometry-induced confinement and localized surface plasmon resonance synergistically lower the hole-extraction barrier, suppress interfacial recombination, and enhance photoconversion efficiency. Its flexible and transparent design, combined with a compact backend circuit using wavelet-threshold denoising, enables integration into a smart contact lens for accurate and stable non-invasive ocular oxygen monitoring. In vivo experiments demonstrate that this smart contact lens could provide a simple, non-invasive platform for continuous ocular SpO₂ monitoring, with potential relevance to systemic oxygen-status assessment.

Pest infestations devastate crop production, but chemical pesticides pose environmental and health risks. Eco-friendly biopesticides offer a solution, though limited by bioactive compound discovery. Here, we demonstrate that utilization of Yunnan’s Xishuangbanna—a cucumber diversity hotspot—to identify the local variety XSBN032, which retains desirable agronomic traits under aphid pressure. Metabolomic and GC–MS analyses identify farnesal—a volatile compound significantly enriched in XSBN032—under infested and non-infested conditions. Applying 0.33 g/L farnesal nanoemulsion to cucumber leaves rapidly disrupts aphid metabolism (within 6 h), impairing amino acid pathways and suppressing growth/reproduction, achieving 74.9% mortality within 24 h while preserving plant photosynthesis. Significantly, this treatment demonstrates high environmental safety: 0% earthworm mortality (500 mg/L, 7 days) and negligible effects on natural enemies (0% ladybird mortality; 7.41% green lacewing mortality). Our study establishes an integrated pipeline—from resistant germplasm discovery to biopesticide development—providing a sustainable pest control strategy. Leveraging multi-omics screening and smart delivery systems holds promise for future eco-efficient biopesticides. Here the authors show that a sustainable biopesticide can be developed from chemicals produced by a wild cucumber variety. The farnesal nanoemulsion kills 75% of aphids in 24 h while posing minimal risk to the environment and beneficial insects.

Electrospun protein–polysaccharide nanofibers are promising biocompatible substrates for skin-contact materials, yet controlling their morphology and hydration behavior in ternary systems remains challenging. In this work, the modification of a cod collagen peptide/poly(ethylene oxide) (CCP/PEO) system with sodium alginate (SA) was investigated as a model polyelectrolyte interaction. A three-factor Box–Behnken design was applied to optimize the spinning-solution preparation for the liquid absorption capacity (LAC), yielding an optimum at a 12.5 h reaction time, 30 °C, and a 30:1 CCP/SA mass ratio. SEM, FTIR, and XRD analyses indicated that electrostatic association and hydrogen bonding between the protonated amino groups of CCP and carboxylate groups of SA facilitated the formation of uniform nanofibers (458 ± 114 nm) with reduced crystallinity. These interactions significantly enhanced the mechanical performance ( p < 0.01), with a 13.1% increase in tensile strength and a 27.3% increase in elongation at break. Compared to unmodified controls, the SA-modified composite mats exhibited a ~ 27% higher LAC (1063.9%) and improved water retention after simulated skin contact, despite a moderate reduction in permeability. A three-stage hydration mechanism—comprising capillary substrate uptake, osmotic swelling within the proposed polyelectrolyte network, and nanofiber dissolution—is proposed to explain the enhanced hydration capacity. This study provides a quantitative process map for the design of high-performance dry-state carriers for functional facial masks.

In this work, n EB-PEI 1800 ( n = 0.22, 0.29, 0.35), a property tunable polymer for CO 2 capture, is reported by partially modifying poly (ethylene imine) (PEI 1800 ) with 1,2-epoxybutane (EB). The density and viscosity of CO 2 -free and loaded aqueous n EB-PEI 1800 solution are measured at the temperatures of (293.15 to 333.15) K and 0.1 MPa. The aqueous solutions with various weight fractions of w = (5, 10, 15, 20 and 30%) are investigated. According to the experimental data, thermal expansion coefficient ( α p ), viscosity activation energy ( E η ) and CO 2 diffusion coefficient ( D CO2 ), are calculated. The influence of temperature, n EB-PEI concentration, CO 2 loading and modification degree are discussed from the viewpoints of molecular interaction and steric effect. The results reveal that low temperature, high n EB-PEI concentration and high CO 2 loading lead to high density and viscosity. Modification degrees have a great impact on the physical properties of n EB-PEI 1800 + H 2 O systems and can reduce the density and viscosity. The density and viscosity values exhibit the decreasing sequence of ρ PEI + H2O > ρ 0.29EB-PEI + H2O > ρ 0.35EB-PEI + H2O ≈ ρ 0.22EB-PEI + H2O and η PEI + H2O > η 0.22EB-PEI + H2O > η 0.35EB-PEI + H2O > η 0.29EB-PEI + H2O , respectively. All the results are attributed to the combined effects of hydrogen bonding, dispersion force and steric structure.

The toxic effects of microplastic pollution on marine microalgae have attracted considerable attention, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study used the dinoflagellate Gymnodinium sp. as a model organism to investigate the effects of polystyrene (PS) microplastics at different particle sizes (0.1 and 10 μm) and concentrations (0–50 mg L –1 ) on its growth, photosynthesis, oxidative stress, and nitric oxide (NO) metabolism. Results indicated that PS microplastics significantly inhibited Gymnodinium sp. growth, chlorophyll a (Chl a ) concentration, and photochemical efficiency by 16.4%, 40.3%, and 72.0% respectively, with smaller particles (0.1 μm) exhibiting stronger inhibitory effects. Low concentrations (10–20 mg L –1 ) of microplastics might temporarily enhance algal density and Chl a content, yet exhibited long–term inhibitory effects. Microplastic exposure induced significant reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation by 1.96 times, with ROS levels positively correlated to microplastic concentration and exposure duration, indicating oxidative damage as a key mechanism of microplastic toxicity. Microplastic stress markedly elevated nitrate reductase activity (NRA) by 2.86 times and altered NO release patterns–exhibiting NO uptake at low concentrations, shifting to net release at high concentrations. The dynamic changes in NO revealed its dual role in microalgal stress resistance: initially acting as an antioxidant to alleviate stress, but at higher concentrations potentially exacerbating cellular damage. This study elucidates the mechanisms by which microplastics inhibit microalgal growth through physical shading and oxidative stress, and proposes the key regulatory role of NO metabolism in microplastic stress responses, providing a theoretical basis for assessing the ecological risks of marine microplastics.

A hybrid system combining water electrolysis and H 2 autotrophic microorganism enables sustainable CO 2 valorization, but is hindered by low H 2 bioavailability and sluggish hydrogenase kinetics. Here, we report an interface-engineered inorganic–biological biohybrid, constructed by covalently anchoring iron single-atom catalysts (ISA) onto Cupriavidus necator ( C.N @ISA) via click chemistry. The ISA anchored interface generates a localized H 2 -rich microenvironment, accelerates H 2 dissociation, while the synergy between ISA and polyethylene glycol-phenylboronate linker stabilizes the inorganic-biological hybrid interface and promotes electron/proton transfer across microbial membrane. These coupled effects boost reduced form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) regeneration and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis. In addition, ISA exhibits nanozyme-like activity, scavenging reactive oxygen species to protect cell viability. As a result, C.N @ISA achieves CO 2 -to-bioplastic poly- β -hydroxybutyrate production of 1058.8 mg L −1 with a Faradaic efficiency of 42.0%. Integrating theoretical calculations, electrochemical analysis, and transcriptomics confirms that ISA simultaneously enriches and activates H 2 while reinforcing intracellular metabolism, offering a generalizable strategy for carbon-negative biomanufacturing.

This study leverages modern nanotechnology and molecular biological approaches to elucidate the scientific rationale underlying the traditional aqueous decoction practice of Lycopodium japonicum Thunb. (LJT) for knee osteoarthritis (KOA), establishing that the spontaneously formed nanoparticles may contribute to the pharmacologically active material foundation, and demonstrating that they confer therapeutic benefits predominantly through modulation of the MAPK/ERK inflammatory pathway, thereby positioning LJT-NPs as a potentially biocompatible, plant-derived nanotherapeutic candidate. LJT constituents were profiled by ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (UPLC-HR-MS) during aqueous decoction, and their self-assembly into supramolecular nanoparticles was observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). After optimization, LJT-derived nanoparticles (LJT-NPs) were prepared and biosafety was assessed in vivo . Systems pharmacology predicted the main pathway, and anti-osteoarthritic efficacy was validated in papain-induced KOA rat models and in vitro cellular assays. UPLC-HR-MS analysis indicated that lycopodium alkaloids were the primary components of LJT-NPs. In vivo profiling suggested that this endogenous nanosystem exhibits preliminary biosafety. Systems pharmacology revealed MAPK/ERK as the primary regulatory pathway, and experiments showed attenuated phosphorylation of RAF, MEK, ERK, and ELK1 in vivo and in vitro . Additionally, LJT-NPs ameliorated KOA at low doses via local joint injection. LJT-NPs showed therapeutic potential in KOA models, associated with attenuation of MAPK/ERK pathway hyperactivation. This positions LJT-NPs as a botanical-origin nanotherapeutic candidate with good safety and efficacy profiles. Graphical

Liver fibrosis can progress to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, yet effective antifibrotic therapies remain limited. Fibroblast activation protein α (FAPα) is a promising biomarker and therapeutic target, but existing probes are constrained by limited tissue penetration and single-modality imaging, and effective FAPα-targeted antifibrotic agents remain lacking. Here we show that Cs-FAP, a hemicyanine-based near-infrared fluorescence/photoacoustic dual-modal probe, enables real-time and noninvasive visualization of FAPα activity in fibrotic liver tissue. Using a Cs-FAP-guided screening platform integrating high-content imaging and chromatographic purification, we screened 95 medicinal herbs and identified sappanchalcone (Sap) as a potent low-toxicity FAPα inhibitor. Sap markedly attenuated fibrosis progression and improved liver function in multiple liver fibrosis models using male mice. Mechanistically, Sap suppressed hepatic stellate cell activation through inhibition of the FAPα–PI3K–AKT signaling pathway. These findings establish Cs-FAP as a versatile platform for fibrosis imaging and drug discovery and identify Sap as a promising antifibrotic candidate. The authors have developed a dual-modal imaging probe targeting FAPα in liver fibrosis thus identified sappanchalcone as an FAPα inhibitor that attenuated liver fibrosis in murine models.\

Gut microbiota is known to interact with the host to modulate homeostasis and disease. Recent studies have shown that gut microbiota can produce enzymes, such as dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4), that perform functions similar to host enzymes, thus acting as “microbial-host-isozyme” within the host. However, the strain specificity and substrate adaptability of microbiota-derived DPP4 both remain poorly characterized, and the potential implications of microbiota-derived DPP4 on the host remain unclear. Here, we screened different microbiota-derived DPP4s for their enzymatic activities and substrate adaptability, and characterized a specific regulatory effect of Bacteroides vulgatus -derived DPP4 (BvDPP4) on GLP-2. We found that BvDPP4 could disrupt the intestinal barrier and aggravate colitis by inactivating GLP-2. Moreover, we conducted a screen of natural products and identified theaflavin as an inhibitor of BvDPP4, which also regulates levels of GLP-2. Notably, treatment with theaflavin could ameliorate BvDPP4-induced worsening of colitis in a preclinical model. Taken together, our results demonstrate that gut microbial enzymes are therapeutic targets that can be modulated by treatment with natural products, such as theaflavin, to improve gut health. Moreover, our activity-based screening strategy represents an innovative new approach for characterizing microbial enzymes in host disease.

Defensive aggression is an evolutionarily conserved instinct, and its dysregulation represents a common behavioral manifestation in multiple psychiatric disorders. Although glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are widely used for metabolic diseases, their role in aggressive behavior remains unclear. Here, we employed behavioral assays, chemogenetics, immunofluorescence, pharmacological manipulations, and metabolomics to investigate the regulatory effects of GLP-1RA on defensive aggression in mice. Acute intracerebroventricular administration of GLP-1RA significantly suppressed defensive aggression without affecting locomotor activity or time spent in the center of the open field. c-Fos immunofluorescence indicated that this effect was associated with reduced neuronal activity in the dorsomedial periaqueductal gray (DMPAG). Chemogenetic activation of DMPAG neurons reversed the suppressive effect of GLP-1RA on defensive aggression, supporting a key regulatory role of this region. In a social isolation (SI) induced pathological aggression model, GLP-1RA alleviated excessive defensive aggression and modulated the metabolic state of the DMPAG. Notably, GLP-1RA restored levels of L-carnosine, a dipeptide with neuroprotective and anti-excitotoxic properties whose levels were reduced in SI mice. Carnosine infusion into the DMPAG suppressed defensive aggression in SI mice, whereas administration of the carnosine degrading enzyme CNDP2 attenuated the suppressive effect of GLP-1RA, supporting carnosine signaling as a functionally relevant downstream component. These findings identify a carnosine-associated pathway by which GLP-1RA regulates defensive aggression and highlight its therapeutic potential beyond metabolic regulation.

With the increasing demand for sustainable energy storage devices, biomass-derived carbon materials have been regarded as promising electrode candidates for supercapacitors because of their renewability, low cost, and environmental compatibility. As abundant agricultural wastes, peanut shells remain largely underutilized; therefore, their conversion into high-value carbon materials is of considerable significance for waste valorization and energy storage applications. In this work, peanut shell-derived porous carbon was prepared by pre-carbonization followed by high-temperature KOH activation. During activation, the carbon skeleton was effectively etched by KOH, generating abundant micropores and a hierarchical pore structure. The optimized PHPC-800-2 exhibits a well-developed multidimensional porous network, a high specific surface area of 1668.77 m 2 g −1 , a total pore volume of 0.69 cm 3 g −1 , and a moderate micropore-to-mesopore ratio, thereby providing abundant active sites and efficient ion transport pathways. Electrochemical tests demonstrate that in a three-electrode system, the PHPC-800-2 electrode delivers a high specific capacitance of 240.65 F g −1 at a current density of 0.5 A g −1 ; when the current density is increased to 5 A g −1 , the specific capacitance is 205.5 F g −1 , still retaining 85.4% of the capacitance, indicating good rate capability. Furthermore, the symmetric supercapacitor assembled based on PHPC-800-2 exhibits a high specific capacitance of 91.6 F g −1 at a current density of 0.5 A g −1 , achieves an energy density of 12.72 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 500 W kg −1 , and retains 99.37% of its capacitance after 20,000 charge-discharge cycles. These results demonstrate that peanut shell waste can be converted into high-performance porous carbon electrodes, providing a sustainable strategy for biomass-derived carbon materials in energy storage applications.

Preparing cheap, stable and effective electrocatalytic for oxygen evolution catalysts is urgent. A two-step hydrothermal method was applied to synthesis the heterostructural catalyst of Ni 3 S 2 /NiFe-LDH/NF in this study. The experiment demonstrates that Ni 3 S 2 could grow on the edges of NiFe-LDH. At 100 mA·cm − 2 , the Ni 3 S 2 /NiFe-LDH/NF shows 264 mV overpotential for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) which is lower than that of NiFe-LDH/NF and Ni 3 S 2 /NF. The electrochemical analysis shows that the heterostructure in Ni 3 S 2 /NiFe-LDH/NF could increase the effective charge transfer, active sites and adjusts the adsorption-desorption energy of OER performance. Also, the Ni 3 S 2 /NiFe-LDH/NF showed long-term stability, which is a candidate for water electrolysis applications in practice. Graphical
