Production of alternative, clean aviation fuel from biomass synthesis gas via Fischer–Tropsch (FT) synthesis has attracted much attention. In this paper, Al-SBA-15 supported cobalt catalysts with different Al/Si ratios were successfully prepared for the production of aviation fuel by FT synthesis. The physical and acidic properties of the Co/Al-SBA-15 catalysts were characterized by XRF, XRD, N2 adsorption–desorption, TEM, H2-TPR, 27Al NMR, NH3-TPD, and Py-FTIR. The formation of long-chain hydrocarbons was inhibited by the ordered mesoporous structure. Fischer–Tropsch activity and selectivity were demonstrated to be affected by the acidity of the Al-SBA-15 supports. The selectivity turned to lighter iso-paraffin products. Co-based catalyst with Al/Si ratio of 0.01 exhibited the highest selectivity (52.4%) for aviation fuel (C8–C18 products) and much higher ratio of iso-paraffin/normal-paraffin (iso/n) (20.2%). This study might provide useful information for the selective production of aviation fuel via FT synthesis.

By hybridizing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into SiC reinforced Al matrix composites , a novel composite was fabricated to achieve excellent mechanical properties and low coefficient of thermal expansion simultaneously. The study demonstrated that the CNTs can help to acquire the uniform dispersion of SiC particles in the Al matrix, because of their interaction during ball milling and hot rolling processes. In addition, the results revealed that such design optimizes both the mechanical and thermal properties, due to homogeneous microstructure as well as tight and uniform interfaces induced by the addition of CNTs. Strengthening mechanism and Sideridis's model were used to discuss the effects of the CNTs on the mechanical and thermal properties. This study opens up an unexplored avenue for simultaneous improvement of the mechanical and thermal properties of metal matrix composites .

Converting renewable biomass into liquid fuels and value-added chemicals has emerged as a pivotal technology, driving the transformation of the energy landscape. Efficiently transforming the cellulose components of biomass into the crucial liquid fuel precursor levulinic acid holds profound significance. The principal objective of this study is to fabricate a temperature-responsive catalyst based on Al-doped silicotungstic acid, which is intended for converting glucose into levulinic acid. By exploiting the interaction between choline chloride and silicotungstic acid, which exhibits a notable capacity for high proton migration, we successfully synthesized a stable acid catalyst with responsive properties to temperature changes. Through precise adjustments of Al3+ concentration, we engineered a collection of Lewis/Brønsted composite catalysts capable of responding to temperature variations. A comprehensive analysis of the catalyst’s structure and acidity was conducted using various techniques including FTIR, XRD, TEM, and Py-IR. These methods revealed crucial insights into the crystalline architecture, surface morphology, and distribution of acidic domains, providing a solid foundation for a deeper understanding of the catalytic reaction mechanism. Through the meticulous optimization of key reaction parameters, including Al3+ loading, solvent composition, reaction temperature, and reaction duration, the ChAl2/3HSiW12O40 catalyst achieved its pinnacle of efficiency at 150 °C over an 8 h period. This resulted in the remarkable outcome of complete glucose conversion, yielding an impressive 62.01% of levulinic acid. Additionally, an evaluation of the catalyst’s recyclability was carried out, demonstrating its commendable hydrothermal stability and ability for repetitive usage without any reduction in catalytic efficiency.

A modified cerium seal PEO pretreatment was developed on 2A14 alloy and combined with an epoxy coating (EP) to form a duplex coating system. The PEO coating was effectively sealed by cerium hydroxides and oxides , and also acted as a controlled release vessel for the cerium salt corrosion inhibitor , and significantly improved the adhesive strength of the EP. The results of electrochemical tests and immersion experiments show that the coating system pretreated with the modified cerium seal PEO exhibits excellent long-term corrosion resistance and active protection. This is attributed to the physical barrier of insoluble cerium-based compounds and sensitive pH-responsive deposition.

In this study, highly uniform 3D Al nanoneedle arrays (AlNNAs) decorated with Ag nanopines are synthesized by anodization of Al foil with prior nanoimprinting and subsequent electrodeposition method, demonstrating remarkable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) property. The AlNNAs possess a highly ordered periodicity of 1 μm and nanoneedle height of 800 nm, making it an optimal supporting matrix to host Ag-NPs as SERS substrate. Such well-ordered Ag@AlNNAs SERS substrate with precisely electrodeposited Ag nanopines generate high density SERS host spots and abundant sites to adsorb target molecules. As a result, Ag@AlNNAs exhibit high sensitivity for rhodamine 6 G down to 10 –13 M and good signal reproducibility with a relative standard deviation of 7.2 %, as well as an average enhancement factor of 4.23 × 10 9 . For practical detection of pollutants, 10 –8 M adenine , 10 –12 M bisphenol in water, and melamine (10 –7 M) in opaque milk are clearly identified by using the Ag@AlNNAs sensor. This study opens a bright way to fabricate SERS substrate with a good balance of sensitivity, reproducibility and cost, indicating promising potential for environmental monitoring and food safety.

This study used metal oxide-modified metal-organic frameworks to examine H 2 S catalytic oxidation selectivity. The findings revealed that the oxidation mechanisms and products differed between Fe 2 O 3 /UiO-66 and Al 2 O 3 /UiO-66. The dithionates were intermediate products of H 2 S oxidation on Al 2 O 3 /UiO-66, whereas the bisulfates were intermediate products on Fe 2 O 3 /UiO-66. Fe 2 O 3 /UiO-66 showed stronger surface oxidation activity than Al 2 O 3 /UiO-66. The formation of sulfate/SO 2 was primarily attributable to surface oxygen, whereas elemental sulfur was primarily related to lattice oxygen. The product generation processes of H 2 S on Fe 2 O 3 /UiO-66 and Al 2 O 3 /UiO-66 surfaces were as follows: H 2 S → HSO 4 2− → SO 2 → S for Fe 2 O 3 /UiO-66, while H 2 S → S 2 O 4 2− → SO 2 for Al 2 O 3 /UiO-66. H 2 O and surface oxygen have the potential to alter H 2 S adsorption on the catalyst surface. For Fe 2 O 3 , the conversion of H 2 S to SO 2 involves both an oxidation process and a reduction process. For Al 2 O 3 , the conversion of H 2 S to SO 2 includes two oxidation processes. Due to the oxidation step of S 2 O 4 2− limiting the generation of SO 2 , the reduction process of SO 2 was also hindered, which in turn restricted the production of S over Al 2 O 3 . Fe 2 O 3 can achieve the oxidation and removal of H 2 S at lower reaction temperatures, while also creating elemental S.

Nano-thermite has become a subject of significant interest in the composite energetic materials field due to its high energy release rate. To cater to diverse engineering needs, thermite formulations are often customized to fulfill specific criteria. This study investigates the potential of metal nickel (Ni) as an additive to modify nano-thermite formulations, selected for its optimal calorific values and chemical reactivity. The base materials, nano-aluminum (Al) and iron oxide (Fe 2 O 3 ), are blended with varying mass ratios of Ni (1 %, 3 %, 5 %, 7 %, 9 %) using the wet ball milling method. Pre-reaction and post-reaction morphological and compositional alterations in the resultant thermite samples are scrutinized through SEM and XRD characterization tests. Moreover, DSC analysis and combustion experiments were conducted to examine the pyrolysis and combustion behaviors of the evaluated samples. The results reveal a reduced exothermic peak on the DSC curves with the introduction of Ni, making the liquid-solid ( L - S ) phase reaction more challenging compared to the Al/Fe 2 O 3 thermite. Intriguingly, Ni addition progressively decreases the combustion temperature of thermites as the Ni's mass ratio increases, with a peak efficiency at 7 % in the perforation tests on stainless-steel plates. This research further reveals that the thermite reaction mechanism is a combined consequence of the “pre-ignition-fusion” and “fusion-diffusion” mechanisms. These insights can provide valuable guidance for designing thermite formulations for potential applications in storage, management, and pyrotechnic cutting areas.

As an efficient clean energy technology, water electrolysis for hydrogen production has its efficiency limited by the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics, which drives the demand for the development of high-performance anode OER catalysts. This work constructs bimetallic (Al, Mn) co-doped nanoporous spinel CoFe 2 O 4 (np-CFO) with a tunable structure and composition as an OER catalyst through a simple two-step dealloying strategy. The as-formed np-CFO (Al and Mn) features a hierarchical flaky configuration; that is, there are a large number of fine nanosheets attached to the surface of a regular micron-sized flake, which not only increases the number of active sites but also enhances mass transport efficiency. Consequently, the optimized catalyst exhibits a low OER overpotential of only 320 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , a minimal Tafel slope of 45.09 mV dec −1 , and exceptional durability. Even under industrial conditions (6 M KOH, 60 °C), it only needs 1.83 V to achieve a current density of 500 mA cm −2 and can maintain good stability for approximately 100 h at this high current density. Theoretical simulations indicate that Al and Mn co-doping could indeed optimize the electronic structure of CFO and thus decrease the energy barrier of OER to 1.35 eV. This work offers a practical approach towards synthesizing efficient and stable OER catalysts.

Metal fuels are widely used in energetic materials to improve their energy release. Al Si alloy fuel is an aluminum-based alloy fuel, and its slow reaction rate limits its potential application in energy material systems. Herein, Al-Si-Mg AlSi9Mgx alloy fuel had been designed and successfully prepared by gas atomization to achieve excellent reactivity characteristics. The reaction characteristics of the fuel were systematically measured by thermal analysis (TG-DSC), bomb calorimeter, volumetric explosion vessel system and laser ignition measurement. Due to the addition of highly active magnesium, the activation energy of alloy fuel was reduced, and the combustion efficiency was increased to more than 99 %, and the ignition delay time was reduced by 6.7 ms and 33.6 ms respectively. Combustion of potassium perchlorate (KP) mixtures shows that AlSi9Mgx alloy fuels had a faster flame propagation rate, 22.814 mm/s and 42.543 mm/s. The superior reaction properties of AlSi9Mgx alloy fuel are due to the presence of internal solid solution Mg or low melting point alloy compound. This work and design provide a reliable method for optimizing the energy output of alloy fuels.

This study demonstrates effective resistance welding between 7075 aluminum (Al) alloy and carbon fiber/polyether ether ketone (CF/PEEK) composites by combining chemical etching and silanization surface treatments with a polyetherimide (PEI) thermoplastic layer. The effects of this hybrid treatment on the bonding at the 7075 Al alloy/PEI thermoplastic layer interface and the mechanical performance of the welded joints are systematically investigated. Chemical etching created a micro-nano rough surface that enhanced mechanical interlocking and increased hydroxyl group content from 12.7 mol% to 28.5 mol%. Subsequent silanization grafted amino ( NH 2 ) groups onto the 7075 Al alloy surface, enabling hydrogen bonding with the PEI thermoplastic layer. Under the synergistic effects of mechanical interlocking and hydrogen bonding, interfacial bonding is significantly enhanced, increasing the lap shear strength (LSS) of the joint from 0.2 to 24.6 MPa. The fracture failure mode of the welded joint changes from the interfacial failure of the 7075 Al alloy and PEI thermoplastic layer to the interlaminar failure of carbon fiber tearing in the heating element. Summary A new approach enables effective resistance welding of 7075 Al alloy and CF/PEEK composites. A hybrid surface treatment enhances 7075 Al alloy bonding with PEI thermoplastic layer. The hybrid surface treatment induces mechanical interlocking and hydrogen bonding effects. The synergistic effects can significantly enhance the performance of welded joints.

Nickel–aluminum (Ni–Al) spinel catalysts with distinct Ni/Al molar ratios were synthesized to construct Ni 2+ coordination sites. Owing to the favorable distribution of Ni 2+ coordination sites and the presence of suitable concentration of Ni 2+ in octahedral sites, Ni/Al-0.725 catalyst achieved an 86.1 % average yield of perhydrophenanthrene, which was higher than that obtained with Ni/Al-0.25 (6.3 %). Characterization results indicated that Ni 2+ of the Ni/Al-0.725 catalyst was present in octahedral sites and ∼ 40.4 % Ni 2+ was reduced to Ni, whereas the active Ni metal of Ni/Al-0.25 catalyst mainly comprised Ni 2+ occupying tetrahedral sites as precursors. Furthermore, the Ni/Al-0.725 catalyst exhibited the smallest Ni particle size (2.82 nm) and the largest Ni available surface (19.62 m 2 /g sample ), which helped alleviate competitive adsorption among aromatic hydrocarbons. The Ni reduced by the spinel catalysts was in an electron-deficient state, which enhanced the adsorption of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) is a highly promising solid-state hydrogen storage material, but its application is hindered by sluggish kinetics and high operating temperatures. Currently, alloying and catalysis are effective strategies for improving the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 , but the designing of a hydrogen ab/desorption system which synergistically combines them remains a challenge. Herein, Mg Al solid solution and intermetallic compounds (Al species), and a spherical Nb-doped TiO 2 (Nb-TiO 2 ) were introduced into Mg/MgH 2 to enhance the hydrogen storage performance. Al species significantly enhanced the dehydrogenation thermodynamics of Mg 90 Al 10 - 15 at.% Nb-TiO 2 , while improving the hydrogen ab/desorption kinetics of the composite synergistically with the Nb-TiO 2 . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the synergism of Al species and Nb-TiO 2 led to preferential adsorption of H atoms at the interfaces of Nb-TiO 2 and Mg 17 Al 12 , with abundant electron transfer. The dehydrogenation enthalpy ( ΔH ) of Mg 90 Al 10 - 15 at.% Nb-TiO 2 decreased from 80.86 (MgH 2 ) to 69.05 kJ/mol, while its hydrogen desorption apparent activation energy ( E a ) decreased from 146.40 (MgH 2 ) to 88.80 kJ/mol simultaneously. The composite could absorb 4.70 wt% H 2 within 2000 s at 200 °C and showed a dehydrogenation onset temperature of 209 °C. This work reveals a synergistic effect between alloying and catalysis, advancing both the performance enhancement strategies and the mechanistic understanding of Mg-based hydrogen storage materials.
