As(III) and Cd(II) co-existence results in co-contamination in soil and water. It is still a great challenge for As(III) and Cd(II) simultaneous removal in the aqueous medium due to their contrasting chemical behaviour. Herein, we prepared a novel magnesium-manganese modified biochar composite (Mg/Mn@BC) for simultaneous Cd(II) and As(III) elimination from contaminated water . The synergistic effect of Mg/Mn@BC composite on synchronous Cd( II ) and As(I II ) removal was confirmed. In the mixed sorption system, the Langmuir sorption capacity of Mg/Mn@BC for As(III) and Cd( II ) was 164 and 316 mg g −1 , respectively, which was more than that in the single adsorption system (75 and 295 mg g −1 ). In the single sorption system, the Mg/Mn@BC sorption efficiency was > 61% and 100% for As( III ) and Cd( II ), respectively, while > 87% and 100% in the mixed adsorption system. The characterization results revealed that synergistic adsorption was mainly attributed to anion-bridging (Mn/MgO–As–Cd) and cation-bridging (Mn/MgO–Cd–As). The ion exchange, precipitation, Cd–π binding and inner-sphere surface complexation with functional groups were predominant in the sorption process, while hydrogen bonding force and ternary complexation were the primary pathways in mixed adsorption system to eliminate Cd(II) and As(III). The results suggested that Mg/Mn@BC composite can be a potential material for wastewater treatment .

In this paper, an effective chitosan/beta-cyclodextrin/nanometer zinc oxide (CS/β-CD/Nano-ZnO) composite porous membrane was synthesized by sol-gel and polymer-assisted inverting method. Preparation conditions of CS/β-CD/Nano-ZnO were investigated by single-factor and Box-Behnken response surface methodology optimizing triethoxyvinylsilane (JH-V151), beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD), and nanometer zinc oxide (Nano-ZnO), and applied to study the adsorption characteristics of Cong red (CR) from aqueous solution using batch experiments. The optimum preparation conditions were determined that the volume fraction of JH-V151 alcohol solution was 11%, the ratio of β-CD to CS was 5.35, and the ratio of Nano-ZnO’s mass to solution’s volume was 0.36%. Different characterization methods including field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, and Universal Materials Tester were used to prove the appearance, crystallinity, functional groups, swelling degree, transmittance, and tensile property of CS/β-CD/Nano-ZnO. The optimized batch experimental parameters were 50 mg L −1 , 4 h, 7.0, 0.5 g L −1 , and 55.0 °C as initial concentration, contact time, pH, adsorbent dose, and temperature, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity on CR reached 96.33 mg g −1 , which is 4.34 times with respect to CS. The batch experimental data were best described by a pseudo-second-order kinetics model and Langmuir isotherm model ( R 2 = 0.9965, theoretical saturated adsorption capacity 147.28 mg g −1 ). The values ∆G were − 2.09, − 4.73, and − 7.37 kJ mol −1 at 298, 308, and 318 K temperatures, respectively. The ∆H value was 76.68 kJ mol −1 , indicating the endothermic and spontaneous adsorption in nature. The ∆S value was 0.26 kJ mol −1 K −1 , a signal of entropy increase during adsorption. The adsorption capacity decreased only by 5.8% after six recycling runs, which indicated the reusability of CS/β-CD/Nano-ZnO. Therefore, the CS/β-CD/Nano-ZnO composite porous membrane is a promising membrane material for the efficient removal of CR from any water at large and economic scales at moderate concentration.

CuZrO 3 nanocomposites were prepared by chemical precipitation and oxidation at a high temperature (700 °C). The structural features of the fabricated CuZrO 3 nanocomposites (CuZrO 3 NCs) were elucidated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results presented herein show that these nanocomposites formed a nanograde needle structure with high crystallinity. By mixing with graphene (Gr), a CuZrO 3 -Gr composite modified glassy carbon electrode (CuZrO 3 -Gr/GCE) was successfully constructed for the simultaneous electrochemical detection of Pb(II) and Cd(II) in a acetate (NaAc-HAc) buffer solution (pH 4.6) via square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). Due to the synergetic effect of the CuZrO 3 nanoparticles and graphene, the CuZrO 3 -Gr/GCE showed excellent electrical conductivity and mechanical stability in the presence of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions. The limits of detection were 0.1 μg L −1 for Pb(II) and 0.5 μg L −1 for Cd(II). Application of this method for the co-detection of two ions in soil samples is expected to obtain useful results and possess significant advantages over tradition detection methods.

Glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP), which contains glycoproteins produced by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), as well as non-mycorrhizal-related heat-stable proteins, lipids, and humic materials, is generally categorized into two fractions: easily extractable GRSP (EE-GRSP) and total GRSP (T-GRSP). GRSP plays an important role in soil carbon (C) sequestration and can stabilize heavy metals such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and manganese (Mn). Soil contamination by heavy metals is occurring in conjunction with rising atmospheric CO 2 in natural ecosystems due to human activities. However, the response of GRSP to elevated CO 2 combined with heavy metal contamination has not been widely reported. Here, we investigated the response of GRSP to elevated CO 2 in the rhizosphere of Robinia pseudoacacia L. seedlings in Pb- and Cd-contaminated soils. Elevated CO 2 (700 μmol mol −1 ) significantly increased T- and EE- GRSP concentrations in soils contaminated with Cd, Pb or Cd + Pb. GRSP contributed more carbon to the rhizosphere soil organic carbon pool under elevated CO 2 + heavy metals than under ambient CO 2 . The amount of Cd and Pb bound to GRSP was significantly higher under elevated (compared to ambient) CO 2 ; and elevated CO 2 increased the ratio of GRSP-bound Cd and Pb to total Cd and Pb. However, available Cd and Pb in rhizosphere soil under increased elevated CO 2 compared to ambient CO 2 . The combination of both metals and elevated CO 2 led to a significant increase in available Pb in rhizosphere soil compared to the Pb treatment alone. In conclusion, increased GRSP produced under elevated CO 2 could contribute to sequestration of soil pollutants by adsorption of Cd and Pb.

Two new isostructural rare-earth oxyborates ScMO(BO3) (M = Ca and Cd) with a three-dimensional (3D) cationic framework and parallel arranged [BO3] triangles have been synthesized by the flux method. In the 3D cationic framework, an interesting sandwich-like basic building unit (BBU) is constructed by two ∞1[Ca(1)O4]6− chains and two ∞1[Sc(1)O4]5− chains. ScMO(BO3) melt incongruently, which shows that title compounds can be grown by the flux method. The UV cut-off edges for ScCaO(BO3) and ScCdO(BO3) are 230 and 249 nm, respectively. In addition, the first-principles calculations are performed to gain further insights into the relationship between the microscopic electronic structures and associated optical properties.

Rice production is threatened by heavy metal stress. The use of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in agriculture has been reported in previous studies. We aimed to quantify the impact of MWCNTs on the growth and physiological characteristics of scented rice under cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) stresses. Therefore, a pot experiment was conducted, two scented rice varieties Yuxiangyouzhan and Xiangyaxiangzhan were used as materials grown under different concentrations of MWCNTs (0, 100, and 300 mg kg −1 recorded as CK, CNPs100, and CNPs300, respectively). The yield, antioxidant response, and rhizosphere microbial community of scented rice were studied. The results showed that compared with the CK treatment, the CNPs100 and CNPs300 treatments increased leaf dry weight by 17.95%–56.22% at the heading stage, and the H 2 O 2 content in leaves decreased significantly by 36.64%–42.27% at the maturity stage. Under CNPs100 treatment, the grain yield of two scented rice varieties increased significantly by 17.54% and 27.40%, respectively. The MWCNTs regulated the distribution of the Cd and Pb in different plant tissues. The content of Cd (0.11–0.20 mg kg −1 ) and Pb (0.01–0.04 mg kg −1 ) in grain were at a safety level (<0.2 mg kg −1 ). Moreover, MWCNTs increased soil microbial community abundance and altered community composition structure under Cd–Pb stress, which in turn improved agronomic traits and quality of scented rice. Overall, this study suggested that the application of MWCNTs regulates the growth, yield, physiological response , and soil microbial community, the genotypes response effect of scented rice to MWCNTs is needed further studied.

Jaw defects, which can result from a multitude of causes, significantly affect the physical well-being and psychological health of patients. The repair of these infected defects presents a formidable challenge in the clinical and research fields, owing to their intricate and diverse nature. This study aims to develop a personalized bone tissue engineering scaffold that synergistically offers antibacterial and osteogenic properties for treating infected maxillary defects. This study engineered a novel temperature-sensitive, sustained-release hydrogel by amalgamating β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) with chlorhexidine (CHX) and a decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM). This hydrogel was further integrated with a polylactic acid (PLA)–nano hydroxyapatite (nHA) scaffold, fabricated through 3D printing, to form a multifaceted composite scaffold (nHA/PLA/dECM/β-CD–CHX). Drug release assays revealed that this composite scaffold ensures prolonged and sustained release. Bacteriological studies confirmed that the β-CD–CHX loaded scaffold exhibits persistent antibacterial efficacy, thus effectively inhibiting bacterial growth. Moreover, the scaffold demonstrated robust mechanical strength. Cellular assays validated its superior biocompatibility, attributed to dECM and nHA components, significantly enhancing the proliferation, adhesion, and osteogenic differentiation of osteogenic precursor cells (MC3T3-E1). Consequently, the nHA/PLA/dECM/β-CD–CHX composite scaffold, synthesized via 3D printing technology, shows promise in inducing bone regeneration, preventing infection, and facilitating the repair of jaw defects, positioning itself as a potential breakthrough in bone tissue engineering.

Carvacrol essential oil has broad-spectrum antibacterial properties, but the essential oil is volatile and unstable for long-term storage and use. In order to improve the relevant properties of carvacrol, in the present study, carvacrol was encapsulated with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) using the saturated aqueous solution method, and response surface analysis was carried out, which gave a high encapsulation rate (63.58 ± 3.74%). The success encapsulation of carvacrol was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The release performance of the encapsulants was also tested at different temperature and humidity levels. In addition, polyethylene glycol (PEG) composite carvacrol-inclusive preservation paper prepared by these anhydrous conditions showed high antibacterial activity against Streptomyces fructus Monilinia fructicola , the main pathogen of peaches. Also, PEG was used to form the film in the anhydrous condition with the inclusion compound and ethylene inhibitor 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) to obtain the film coated paper, and its effect on postharvest preservation quality of peach was studied. The results showed that PEG + Carvacrol-β-CD + 1-MCP-α-CD inclusion complexes (ICs) effectively prolonged the storage time and improved the fruit quality and enzyme activity of peach. This study provides a solution for the preparation of controlled-release coated paper with essential oils and 1-MCP bioactives to extend the shelf life of fruits and vegetables. Graphical Abstract

Currently, the reported stabilizers for soil remediation mainly focus on reducing the availability and migration of heavy metals, yet shifts in surrounding environmental factors can lead to the remobilization of these pollutants. Herein, a novel polyethyleneimine (PEI) cross-linked magnetic cellulose aerogel (MCA PEI ) was synthesized and employed for remediating cadmium (Cd)-polluted soil and alleviating the stress effects of Cd on green fertilizer (SV), a key biological fertilizer in southwest China. The cellulose derived from straw showed distinct characteristic peaks, with a substantial rise in functional group content following gelation, while the magnetized gel demonstrated easy recovery from soil. The synthesized MCA PEI demonstrated broad pH adaptability and rapid Cd(II) uptake, achieving a maximum binding capacity of 200.41 mg/g. The DTPA-Cd concentration was reduced by 89 % with a 3.0 % MCA PEI dosage under 40 % of soil moisture after 20 d. After 1 % MCA PEI remediation and recycling, the total amount of Cd in the soil decreased, which was conducive to improving soil properties, reducing the accumulation of Cd in SV, and promoting the growth of SV. In short, this study proposed a sustainable and effective remediation strategy for Cd-polluted soil using a magnetic functionalized aerogel that could be easily separated from the soil after remediation.

The discarded longan shell-derived porous carbon material (LPC) served as a scaffold for synthesizing bismuth nanoparticle-loaded longan porous carbon nanocomposite (BiNPs@LPC) via a hydrothermal method . Then BiNPs@LPC was utilized to modify screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE) for simultaneous detection of Pb(II) and Cd(II) by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). The material was thoroughly characterized by scanning electron microscopy , X-ray diffraction, Raman spectra , Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry . BiNPs@LPC exhibited abundant porous structures, high surface area , and numerous active sites, which could improve significantly response sensitivity. Under optimal conditions, the peak currents of Pb(II) and Cd(II) exhibited favorable linear relationships with the concentration within a range of 0.1–150 μg L −1 , with detection limits (S/N = 3) of 0.02 μg L −1 and 0.03 μg L −1 , respectively. BiNPs@LPC/SPCE demonstrated remarkable selectivity , stability and repeatability. The proposed method was successfully applied for the detection of Pb(II) and Cd(II) in seafoods achieving satisfying recovery of 97.8%–108.3% and 96.7%–106.4%. These excellent test properties were coupled with convenience for batch preparation of the modified electrodes , highlighting its potential for practical applications in heavy metal detection of real samples.

A high removal rate (>99.7%) of combined arsenite (As(III)) and Cd (Cd(II)) in low concentration (1000 μg/L) from contaminated water was achieved by a calcined MgZnFe-CO 3 layered double hydroxide (CMZF) adsorbent. Batch control studies and a series of spectroscopy detection technologies were employed to investigate the removal mechanism and interactions between As(III) and Cd(II) on the interface of water/CMZF. Synergistic adsorption and photooxidation occurred based on the systematical kinetic and isotherm studies. The enhanced removal of As(III) was achieved by the photooxidation, formation of ternary As(III) Cd(II) surface complexes and enhanced hydrogen bond . Meanwhile, oxidative formed negative charged As(V) could reduce the electrostatic repulsion force between Cd(II) cations and play a role as anion bridging, consequently resulted in a stronger attraction between CMZF and Cd(II). Combined with the verdicts of relevant characterizations such as XRD, XPS and EPR, it was assumed that the deep co-removal mechanism could be attributed to the coupling of various processes including intercalation, complexation, photooxidation of As(III) and precipitation of CdCO 3 . Moreover, the successful removal of As(III) and Cd(II) from real water matrix qualified the CMZF a potentially attractive adsorbent for both As(III) and Cd(II) deep treatment in practical engineering.

Soils contain abundant organic matter (OM) and Mn(oxyhydr)oxides (MnOs) composites, which primarily control the geochemical behavior of Cd. However, the impact of manganese phase transformation on the retention and availability of Cd remains unclear. Here, four organo-mineral composites were synthesized using birnessite (δ-Mn Ⅳ O 2 ), β-Mn Ⅲ,Ⅳ O 2 , γ-Mn Ⅲ OOH, and Mn Ⅱ,Ⅲ 3 O 4 with fulvic acid (FA), during adsorption to preformed MnOs with 5 wt% organic carbon loadings. The performance and underlying Cd(II) adsorption mechanism by resulting FA-MnO composites were explored. Results showed that δ-MnO 2 transformation decreases Cd(II) adsorption capacity by 23.02–45.44 % on the resulting FA-MnOs. This reduction was attributed to increased aggregation of MnO particles and competition from generated Mn(II/III) for available vacancy sites. Cd undergoes redistribution within the FA-MnOs during the transformation of δ-MnO 2 . The amount of Cd associated with MnOs decreases by 9.46–37.08 %, while OM bound-Cd increases by 2.82–10.49 %. FAδ-MnO 2 predominantly interacted with Cd(II) through tetravalent manganese, forming stable coordination or chemical bonds. In contrast, FAγ-MnOOH and FA-Mn 3 O 4 primarily interacted with Cd(II) through divalent manganese via electrostatic attraction and ion exchange, resulting in weaker binding stability. These findings provide new insights into the roles of manganese transformation in the geochemical cycling of Cd in soils.
