Preparation and properties of Al2O3 dispersed fine-grained W-Cu alloy

He Zhang,Jun-Ru Liu,Zhi-Bo Li,Xiao-Chun Deng,Guo-Hua Zhang,Kuo-Chih Chou

In this study, high-performance fine-grained W-Cu sintered blocks with the addition of dispersed Al 2 O 3 particles were successfully produced by low temperature liquid-phase sintering, using the raw material of ultrafine W-Cu alloy powder. The ultrafine W-Cu alloy powder was obtained by a two-step reduction process composed of stages of carbothermal reaction and hydrogen deep deoxidation. The fine Al 2 O 3 grains with uniform distribution in W-Cu alloy were introduced by spray method, leading to the decrease of W grain size and W-W connectivity. The relative densities of all sintered blocks were>97%, and a higher degree of densification ensures that the alloy has excellent comprehensive properties. With the increase of Al 2 O 3 content, W grain size and W-W connectivity of sintered W-Cu samples decrease from 664 nm to 472 nm and 0.2 to 0.14, respectively. The W-Cu alloy with the ultimate tensile strength of 415 MPa and the highest elongation of 7.22% was obtained when the addition amount of Al 2 O 3 was 0.5 wt%. At the same time, it also possessed the maximum bending strength of 1028 MPa and microhardness of 312 HV, respectively. In addition, due to the good network structure of Cu and uniform three-phase distribution, the sintered samples had excellent conductivity and compressive strength.

Surface metallization with Ni–Cu bimetal for ZTA by electroless plating

Han He,Yehua Jiang,Juanjian Ru,Rong Zhou,Yixin Hua

The surface metallization of zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA) particles with Ni–Cu bimetallic coatings is performed by electroless plating assisted with choline chloride–ethylene glycol (ChCl-EG) ionic liquid. The possible reactions and deposition sequences of the plating process have been analyzed based on the micro-morphologies of the Ni–Cu coated ZTA (ZTA@Ni–Cu) particles obtained at different reaction stages. The roles of ChCl-EG additive, reaction temperature, and ZTA concentration on the surface morphology, coating thickness, and element content of the ZTA@Ni–Cu particles are also investigated. Results show that uniform cauliflower-characteristic Ni–Cu coatings are formed on ZTA surfaces with 35 g·L−1 ChCl-EG at 65°C. The coating thickness is about 26.9 μm, and the element contents of Cu and Ni are 38.1 at% and 61.9 at%, respectively. Besides, a schematic illustration about the fabrication of ZTA@Ni–Cu particles is proposed to elaborate the formation process of Ni–Cu coatings and the function mechanism of ChCl-EG additive.

Zhipeng Zhang,Feifei Li,Guoqiang Li,Rui Li,Yunfang Wang,Yawen Wang,Xiaochao Zhang,Lulu Zhang,Fangfang Li,Jianxin Liu,Caimei Fan

The bottlenecks of photocatalytic nitrogen fixation are adsorption and activation of nitrogen, because N–N bond in dinitrogen is one of the strongest bonds in chemistry . Herein, for the first time, Cu-doped MIL-101(Fe) was applications in photocatalytic nitrogen fixation. The photocatalytic nitrogen fixation activity of Cu-MIL-101(Fe) is three times that of MIL-101(Fe). Characteristic of MIL-101(Fe) and Cu-MIL-101(Fe) are systematically compared by XRD , SEM, TEM, BET, PL and energy band structure . These results indicated that the Cu doping not only enlarge the specific surface area from 1413 m 2 /g to 2097 m 2 /g, but also increase the photoreduction capability from −0.13 V to −0.7 V. These results indicated that nitrogen adsorption and activation capacity can be improved by Cu doping. By combining metal ions doping and components regulation of MOFs , this work provides many future opportunities for enhance photocatalytic nitrogen fixation activity.

Pb2+ Responsive Cu-In-Zn-S Quantum Dots With Low Cytotoxicity

Han XiaoLe,Yu Fan,Lei JiaWen,Zhu Jiahua,Fu HaiYan,Hu JunCheng,Yang Xiao-Long

Water-soluble Cu-In-Zn-S quantum dots (CIZS QDs) with orange fluorescence have been synthesized with a glutathione (GSH) as stabilizer via facile a one-step hydrothermal method. The optimal reaction conditions of CIZS QDs including temperature, time, pH, and the molar ratios of precursors were studied. TEM results indicate that the aqueous-dispersible CIZS QDs are quasi-spherical, and the average diameters are 3.76 nm with excellent fluorescent stability. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity of CIZS QDs was investigated by the microcalorimetry combining with TEM and the IC50 was 10.2 μM. CIZS QDs showed a promising perspective in applications such as a fluorescent probe for bioimaging and biolabeling due to the low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility. Moreover, the CIZS QDs can distinguish Pb2+ ion from other ions, offering great potentials in lead ion determination in drinking water. According to the results of UV, XRD, FL, PL, and ITC methods, the mechanism of CIZS QDs-Pb2+ assay is due to hydrogen bonding or van der Waals forces in the formation of Pb2+ and CIZS QDs.

Surface Coordination Layer to Enhance the Stability of Plasmonic Cu Nanoparticles

Shaopeng Qi,Guoning Liu,Jinxi Chen,Yongbing Lou,Yixin Zhao

The fast oxidation of plasmonic Cu nanomaterials caused by surface-absorbed oxygen has been a serious problem and has hindered their applications in many aspects. Herein, a lollipop-shaped Cu@Cu2O/ZnO heterojunction with a core–shell head and a rodlike stem was successfully prepared using the colloidal chemical method, which exhibits ultralong-term stability against air oxidation in hexane. The enhanced stability of Cu@Cu2O/ZnO was due to the presence of zinc acetate, which resulted in the crystal face reconstruction of Cu@Cu2O and the formation of a thin surface carboxylate coordination layer on the partial surface of Cu@Cu2O. The passivation layer effectively hindered the absorption of surface oxygen, thus reducing the oxidation rate of Cu. Our current work was expected to provide new insights into the protection of active metal nanostructures.

Molecular Stabilization of Sub-Nanometer Cu Clusters for Selective CO2 Electromethanation

Han Zhang,Yu Yang,Yongxiang Liang,Jun Li,An Zhang,Han Zheng,Zhigang Geng,Fengwang Li,Jie Zeng

Graphical Lend me your EORs : Electrochemical oxidation-reduction (EOR) processing of a Cu-based metal-organic framework results in the formation of sub-nanometer Cu clusters that retains the organic linkers for highly selective and durable electrosynthesis of methane from the electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction. Electrochemical CO 2 methanation powered by renewable electricity provides a promising approach to utilizing CO 2 in the form of a high-energy-density, clean fuel. Cu nanoclusters have been predicted by theoretical calculations to improve methane selectivity. Direct electrochemical reduction of Cu-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) results in large-size Cu nanoparticles which favor multi-carbon products. This study concerns an electrochemical oxidation-reduction method to prepare Cu clusters from MOFs. The derived Cu clusters exhibit a faradaic efficiency of 51.2 % for CH 4 with a partial current density of >150 mA cm −2 . High-resolution microscopy, in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, in situ Raman spectroscopy, and a range of ex situ spectroscopies indicate that the distinctive CH 4 selectivity is due to the sub-nanometer size of the derived materials, as well as stabilization of the clusters by residual ligands of the pristine MOF. This work offers a new insight into steering product selectivity of Cu by an electrochemical processing method.

Enhancing CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol via Constructing Cu–ZnO–La2O3 Interfaces

Ji Yaxiong,Lin Shuang,Xu Guihong,Chen Tianen,Gong Jianchao,Meng Fanbin,Wang Yuanhao

Abstract Catalytic conversion of CO 2 to methanol with H 2 from renewable energy has attracted increasing interest as a promising strategy for reducing excessive CO 2 emissions. However, the performance of reported various catalysts still suffers from low methanol yield with a passable CO 2 conversion. In this work, Cu–ZnO–La 2 O 3 interfaces are constructed with various La 2 O 3 mole ratio. Compared to Cu/ZnO, the optimized catalyst (i.e., Cu 0.6 Zn 0.2 La 0.4 ) exhibits a much higher mass-specific methanol formation rate (159.3 g MeOH /kg cat /h) at 240 °C and 3 MPa. A series of ex-situ and in-situ characterizations, such as X-ray diffractometer (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N 2 O titration measurements, and in-situ diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy ( in-situ DRIFTS) study, are used to investigate its structure and mechanism study. The dispersion of Cu over Cu/ZnO/La 2 O 3 catalyst is significantly enhanced, forming more Cu–ZnO–La 2 O 3 interfaces. LaO x species favor CO 2 activation and generate more carbon intermediates species for CO 2 hydrogenation. Furthermore, more Cu + is bonded, which stabilizes the key intermediate, inhibits its desorption, and facilitates its further hydrogenation to methanol. This work is expected to offer an effective strategy to develop new catalysts with high performance for CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol. Graphical Abstract

Cu-Ag@ZIF-8 film for SERS detection of gaseous molecule

Junao Zhang,Xin Xie,Xi He,Xiangnan Gong,Xin Zhang,Anping Liu,Yingzhou Huang

Surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) has emerged as a powerful and sensitive technique for the detection of various molecules, including gaseous analytes. However, the development of efficient, stable, and reusable SERS substrates for gaseous molecule remains a challenge. This work introduces a novel Cu-Ag@ZIF-8 film for SERS detection of gaseous molecule, which consists of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) core and ZIF-8 porous shell on Cu foils. With strong enhancement of electromagnetic field by AgNPs core and effective caption of gaseous molecule by ZIF-8 porous shell, this substrate exhibits good SERS performance of p-aminothiophenol (PATP) and 4-mercaptophenol (DP) gaseous molecules, whose limit of detection (LOD) could reach 9.12 × 10 −10 M and 9.91 × 10 −9 M, respectively. Furthermore, the detection of gaseous benzaldehyde diffused by oil paint is explored by this developed SERS substrate for application. To achieve accurate identification of harmful gaseous molecule in complex volatile organic compounds (VOC), the deep learning (DL) approach is performed based on SERS spectra obtained from this Cu-Ag@ZIF-8 film. Our results demonstrate that the identification of gaseous benzaldehyde in VOC diffused from commercial oil paint has a high accuracy at 97.7% with the help of ANN algorithms, which points out the Cu-Ag@ZIF-8 film has good performance and huge potential for SERS detection of gaseous molecule.

Efficient Cu/CeO2 for Ketonization of Carboxylic Acids with Synergistic Interactions

Shan Zhang,Binbo Jiang,Mingliang Tong,Yao Yang,Zuwei Liao,Zhengliang Huang,Jingyuan Sun,Jingdai Wang,Yongrong Yang

Cost-effective heterogeneous catalysts are critical to the ketonization of carboxylic acids for producing biofuels and platform chemicals. Herein, nanocrystalline Cu-loaded CeO2 with 1.0–9.0 wt % Cu loadings was synthesized by the precipitation-impregnation method, in which 3.0 wt % Cu/CeO2 exhibits the best performance of 72% acetone yield at 330 °C, 97% 3-pentanone yield at 360 °C, and 86% 4-heptanone yield at 400 °C, with good durability up to 10 h on stream. Detailed analyses reveal that 3.0 wt % Cu/CeO2 has the highest percentage of O-vacancy sites, more moderate acid–base sites, and better capacity to adsorb and activate carboxylic acids. In situ DRIFT spectra indicate that monodentate, bridging bidentate, and chelating bidentate modes coexist when carboxylic acid is dissociatively adsorbed on 3.0 wt % Cu/CeO2. Based on the above investigations, we propose a mechanism over 3.0 wt % Cu/CeO2 through the β-ketoacid intermediate route, which gives more details to help future research into the design and development of catalysts for ketonization.

Gyromagnetic properties of Cu-substituted NiZn ferrites for millimeter-wave applications

Hongwei Yang,Fang Xu,Yulong Liao,Yong Ren,Guixiang Liu,Xingwu Yuan,Yanhui Wu,Honglan Lai,Bo Dai

In this work, NiCuZn ferrites with different CuO contents were prepared by solid-state method. The influences of the divalent Cu 2+ on the crystal structure, microstructure and magnetic properties of NiCuZn ferrite were studied in detail. X-ray diffraction characterization showed that Cu 2+ may either replace Ni 2+ and enter into crystal lattice, or distributed at grain boundaries in the form of compound. SEM results showed that adding appropriate amount of CuO can promote grain growth and prepare dense NiCuZn ferrites. Especially, the density of the ferrite sample reaches its maximum value of 5.23 g/cm 3 when the amount of CuO is 0.20. However, superfluous Cu 2+ exists in the form of liquid phase at local grain boundaries once the content of Cu 2+ reached 0.25. Moreover, the magnetic hysteresis loops revealed that the specific saturation magnetization first increased and then decreased and the highest value of 76.6 emu/g was obtained at x = 0.10. Consequently, a NiCuZn ferrite with an appropriate microstructure and with high density (5.16 g/cm 3 ), high saturation magnetization (76.0 emu/g), low ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) linewidth (160 Oe) and 4π Ms (4930 G) could be obtained at a Cu content of x = 0.15.

Tannic acid functionalized Cu-BTC composite for electrochemical sensing of glucose

Wei Yunping,Wang Nan,Liu Xingcen,Lin Meng

In this experiment, a copper-based metal–organic framework (Cu-BTC) was successfully prepared and utilized to compose a copper-tannic acid (TA) complex by in situ tannic acid etching on indium tin oxide (ITO) glass. The Cu-BTC was obtained by the electrodeposition method with a voltage of − 1.6 V. The TA-Cu complex retains the frame structure of the metal–organic framework and has good electrochemical properties. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and amperometric methods were used to estimate the performance of the TA-Cu-modified electrode in glucose detection. The current response of the TA-Cu sensor shows a linear relationship with glucose concentration at 0.5 V in NaOH solution. The modified electrode as an electrochemical glucose sensor exhibits good sensitivity with a low detection limit of 0.002 mM. The TA-Cu-modified electrode also exhibited good stability, anti-interference, and repeatability in glucose detection.

Development of stable water-resistant Cu-based catalyst for methanol synthesis

Chaoqin Xu,Zhiqiang Yan,Jian Yu,Xiaoyue Wang,Hongyan Ban,Yan Wang,Congming Li

Improving the stability of Cu-based catalysts, especially in the presence of water, has always been a great challenge. The hydrophobization strategy and effects on the catalyst surface property and catalytic performance deserve rigorous investigations. Herein, the hydrophobic modified silica was introduced as a support for CuZn catalyst to hinder the adsorption of water on active sites of Cu-based catalysts, thereby improving its stability. And silane agents (methyltrimethoxysilane, ethyltrimethoxysilane, propyltrimethoxysilane) were selected to modify the SiO 2 surface by a reaction between the silane agent and the hydroxyl groups on the silica surface. After modification, the catalysts exhibited the better stability for methanol synthesis in the presence of water. FT-IR, BET, H 2 -TPR, XRD, TEM, XPS characterization were employed to determine the surface physical properties, reduction properties, crystal structure and particle size of the catalysts before and after the reaction. The results showed that water can simultaneously cause the oxidation and growth of Cu species resulting in the deactivation of Cu-based catalyst. However, the introduction of hydrophobic groups reduced the contact time between water and the active center, which prevented the growth and oxidation of Cu species, thus improving the catalyst stability.
