The complexation of metals and metal compounds with organic skeletons into nanohybrid composites attracts attention in electrochemical applications due to the improved charge transfer pathways, which enhance the electrocatalytic activity. In this study, CuO, Cu 2 O, and CuS were anchored on g-C 3 N 4 sheets to construct electrochemical sensors for the detection of acetaminophen (AP). The CuX/g-C 3 N 4 nanohybrid composites were analyzed via transmission electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Among the CuX/g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposites, CuS/g-C 3 N 4 displays a higher electrochemical activity. The electrochemical CuS/g-C 3 N 4 , CuO/g-C 3 N 4 , and Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 sensors have wide linear ranges of 5 to 500 µM with a low detection limit (LOD) of 0.26 µM, 5 to 300 µM with a LOD of 0.32 µM, and 5 to 250 µM with a LOD of 0.47 µM, respectively. The better performance of the CuS/g-C 3 N 4 sensor is probably because of its significantly higher catalytic rate constant with respect to the oxidation of AP in electrochemical kinetics compared with those of the two other sensors, which leads to the enhanced electrocatalytic oxidation of AP. The CuX/g-C 3 N 4 -based electrochemical sensors display an excellent selectivity, repeatability, reproducibility, and stability. These features suggest that CuX/g-C 3 N 4 based electrochemical sensors can be sensitively detected of AP.

Heterostructured Cu-based oxides have been widely used in many fields, such as energy storage, catalysis, and sensing. Conventional techniques for the synthesis of hybrid oxides are time-consuming and often result in low yields. The scalable preparation of heterostructured Cu-based oxides with adjustable phase composition remains a substantial challenge. We demonstrate a simple and efficient solid-state synthesis strategy for the in situ preparation of Cu2O/CuO heterostructured nanorods approximately 10 nm in width, without the use of solvents and post-calcining processing. Tuning the ratio of reactants enables optimization of the components of the Cu2O/CuO heterostructures and their catalytic activities for the carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation reaction. Benefiting from controllable composition, a synergistic effect, and surface-adsorbed oxygen, the resulting Cu2O/CuO heterostructures (Cu2O/CuO-5) show significantly improved catalytic performance in the CO oxidation reaction process. We provide a new and simple method for synthesizing various metal oxide heterostructures for wide-ranging applications.

Owing to the lower toxicity and mobility of inorganic As(V), the oxidative removal of As(III) is deemed as the optimal approach for arsenic elimination from water. Herein, a synthetic TiO 2 -supported CuO material (Cu-TiO 2 ) was coupled with sulfite (S(IV)) to remove As(III) at neutral pH. The combined process coupled oxidation with adsorption (i.e., As(III) removal by Cu-TiO 2 /S(IV)) was superior than a divided preoxidation-adsorption process (i.e., As(V) removal by Cu-TiO 2 ) for arsenic removal. Attractively, low concentration of As(III) (50−300 μg L −1 ) could be completely removed by Cu-TiO 2 (0.25 g L −1 )/S(IV) (0.5 mM) within 60 min. Mechanism investigations revealed that the efficient As(III) removal was attributed to the continuous oxysulfur radicals (SO x •− ) oxidation and Cu-TiO 2 adsorption. The surface-adsorbed and free sulfate radicals (SO 4 •− ) were further identified as the crucial oxidizing species. The Cu-TiO 2 played the dual roles as a catalyst for S(IV) activation and an absorbent for arsenic immobility. The influence of operating parameters (i.e., As(III) concentration and sulfite dosage) and water chemistry (i.e., pH, inorganic anions, dissolved organic matters , and temperature) on As(III) removal were systematically investigated and optimized. Overall, the proposed process has potential application prospects in rehabilitating the As(III)-polluted water environment using industrial waste sulfite.

Rational design of biocompatible nanoplatforms simultaneously realizing multimodal imaging and therapeutic functions is meaningful to cancer treatment. Herein, the MoS 2 –CuO heteronanocomposites are designed by integrating semiconductor CuO and flower-like MoS 2 via a two-step hydrothermal method . After loading bovine serum albumin (BSA) and immunoadjuvant imiquimod (R837), the obtained MoS 2 –CuO@BSA/R837 (MCBR) nanoplatforms realize the excellent computed tomography/infrared thermal/magnetic resonance multi-mode bioimaging as well as significantly enhanced antitumor efficacy of synergetic photothermal therapy (PTT)/chemodynamic therapy (CDT)/immunotherapy. In this nanoplatform, the semiconductor CuO exhibits peroxidase-like activity, which can react with over-expressed H 2 O 2 in tumor microenvironment (TME) to generate OH for CDT via Haber-Weiss and Fenton-like reactions. And this process can be further accelerated by the generated heat of MoS 2 under 808 nm laser irradiation . More importantly, the obtained multifunctional MCBR nanoplatforms under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation would destroy tumor cells to generate tumor associated antigens (TAAs), which combine with R837 as an adjuvant to trigger strong antitumor immune responses for effectively eliminating primary tumors and metastatic tumors.

Mg doped CuO–Fe 2 O 3 composites were hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy . Mg doping improved the catalytic performance of CuO–Fe 2 O 3 for phenol degradation as the removal efficiency of phenol (33 mg/L) reached up to 84.36% within 45 min using 3.2% Mg doped CuO–Fe 2 O 3 when coupled with persulfate (PS) system. The results revealed that Mg doping generated more defects (oxygen vacancies), which result in the generation of more active species during the degradation process. The influence of catalysts and PS dosages were investigated to obtain the optimum conditions. The effects of pH and dissolved oxygen were also evaluated. Increase of solution pH was found to be beneficial for the removal of phenol because of reduced copper leaching at higher pH. However, decrease in dissolved oxygen concentration retarded the degradation of phenol because of the reduced production of O 2 • - . Based on the quenching experiments and ESR experiments, 1 O 2 , O 2 • - , ·OH and ·SO 4 − were confirmed as the active species in the phenol degradation process and a phenol degradation pathway was proposed. Other contaminants such as nitrobenzene (NB), P-nitrophenol (PNP) and P-Chlorophenol (4-CP) could also be removed to some extent using the present catalyst system.

To meet the requirement of generating more apparent specific heat release at lower temperatures for ammonium perchlorate (AP)-based composite solid propellants, the development of high-performance catalysts for improving the thermal decomposition properties of AP still remains essential and challenging. Herein, a novel catalyst, multichanneled hierarchical porous nanocomposite of CuO and carbonized butterfly wing (CuO/CBW), has been prepared through an in-situ reaction on original butterfly wing scales. Owing to the high active surface area and the good electrical and thermal conductivity, as well as the synergistic effect of CuO nanoparticles (20–25 nm) and CBW, CuO/CBW nanocomposite exhibits excellent catalytic activity for AP thermal decomposition in reducing the high-temperature decomposition temperature by 88.3°C, lowering the apparent activation energy from 190.0 to 103.1 kJ mol −1 and increasing the heat release from 255 to 1841 J g −1 .

During the past decades, most reported nanozymes have been confined to limited species of enzyme-like activities and only few examples were reported to mimic tandem enzyme-like activities. To fill gaps in expanding the species and improving catalytic efficiency of nanozymes, exploring nanozymes as tandem nanozymes has turned out to be an effective method. Herein, we have presented the cupric oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) as tandem nanozymes, which is expected to simultaneously catalyze the cascade reaction coupling ascorbate oxidase with peroxidase like activities at temperature (45 °C) and neutral pH (pH = 7). This one-pot cascade reaction system included the oxidation of ascorbic acid (AA) to yield H 2 O 2 and terephthalic acid (TA) oxidation reaction mediated by H 2 O 2 to generate a fluorescence product (λ ex = 315 nm, λ em =422 nm). More significantly, fluorescent sensors are respectively fabricated for AA, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and l -phenylalanine (ALP inhibitor) detection coupling the catalysis of CuO tandem nanozymes with ALP enzymatic reaction. Base on these findings, this work shows high selectivity/sensitivity and low limit of detection (2.92 × 10 −8 M for AA, 0.058 U/L for ALP) properly due to an in-situ reaction. CuO tandem nanozymes expand the species of nanozymes and these CuO tandem nanozymes based fluorescent sensors can be applied for one-pot nonenzymatic biomolecular sensing in clinical diagnostics, biological or pharmaceutical analysis.

Synergistic control of multiple pollutants has high benefits during the control of emissions from fuel utilization, and catalysis can contribute to efficient removal of multiple pollutants. In this work, Ti species regulated CuO/CeO 2 (Cu/Ce) catalyst was constructed to efficient simultaneous NH 3 -SCR denitration and CO oxidation under oxygen-rich conditions. It is found that the introduction of Ti species into Cu/Ce catalyst induces the formation of three-dimensional pore structure and promotes the phase transition from crystalline to amorphous, which significantly enhances the specific surface area and the dispersion of CuO and CeO 2 . The well dispersed CuO and CeO 2 species provide a larger number of adsorbed sites for CO and NO and enhance the Cu-Ce interaction, which can contribute to reducing the competitive adsorption between CO and NO and the formation of a richer surface oxygen vacancies. Owing to above improvements, the Ti species regulated Cu/Ce catalyst can achieve more than 90% removal efficiency of NO x and CO at 148–218 °C, and the active temperature windows widened by 36 °C in comparison with Cu/Ce catalyst. Through this work, we expect to shed some light on the synergistic control of CO and NO x under oxygen-rich conditions.

This study reports on the development of highly-efficient Pt/CuO-Fe 2 O 3 /TiO 2 monolithic catalysts for the low-temperature conversion of NO to N 2 via CO-SCR. In this case, ultrathin TiO 2 nanosheet arrays are designed to in situ grow on flexible Ti mesh to provide more spaces/areas for the loading of highly-dispersed Fe 2 O 3 and CuO active components. Furthermore, Pt nanoparticles with an average size of 1.30 nm are effectively decorated on the surface of CuO-Fe 2 O 3 /TiO 2 . The H 2 -TPR and NO-TPD results demonstrate that the excellent synergistic effect between TiO 2 , CuO, Fe 2 O 3 and trace amounts of Pt is conducive to enhance the adsorption of NO and finally promote the CO-SCR. The obtained Pt/CuO-Fe 2 O 3 /TiO 2 catalysts exhibit excellent CO-SCR performance with 100 % NO conversion, and 100 % N 2 selectivity at 250 °C, showing great potential of de-NO x application by using toxic CO as reductant in industry.

The electrocatalytic conversion of nitrate (NO 3 − ) to nitrogen (N 2 ) is a promising strategy for addressing the global issue of NO 3 − pollution in surface water and groundwater. However, the scarcity of efficient denitrification catalysts hinders the development of the aforementioned process, particularly at low NO 3 − concentrations. Herein, a self-supporting array of defect-rich heterostructured nanowires (Ni 0.8 Cu 0.2 O@CuO@NF) was synthesized for highly selective reduction of NO 3 − to N 2 . The introduction of Cu accelerated the rate-limiting step (NO 3 − to NO 2 − ), and the presence of defect-rich heterojunctions increased the catalytic active sites of the catalyst, thereby accelerating the reduction of NO 3 − and improving the selectivity towards N 2 . Ni 0.8 Cu 0.2 O@CuO@NF exhibited excellent denitrification capacity, with approximately 100% of NO 3 − degradation and 99.9% of N 2 selectivity under optimum parameter conditions, as well as ultra-high stability during the 8-cycle test. Significantly, NO 3 − conversion and N 2 selectivity for actual wastewater with complex ingredients were 70.7% and 99.1%, respectively. This study presents a novel concept for the development of cost-effective and highly effective catalysts for water and environmental restoration.

Graphene@CdS nanowires (GP@CdS NWs) was synthesized by electrostatic assembly and hydrothermal method, and then decorated with CuO nanoparticles via electrodeposition on substrate of glassy carbon electrode to conctruct a photoelectrochemical enzyme-free glucose sensor. Scanning electron microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry were used to characterize the morphology and electrochemical properties of the above ternary CuO/GP@CdS NWs nanocomposites. The integration of photosensitive material GP@CdS NWs with electrocatalytic materials of CuO makes the nanocomposites show prominent photoelectrocatalytic activity toward glucose oxidation in alkaline solution. A 2.45 times increase in sensitivity under visible light irradiation was observed compared to dark condition. As a photoelectrochemical platform for non- enzymatic glucose sensing, the CuO/GP@CdS NWs modified electrode exhibited advantages, such as high detection sensitivity, wide linear concentration range, low detection limit and acceptable antiinterference ability. Good recovery obtained for glucose analysis in human serum sample suggested the validity of the proposed method for real sample analysis.

Engineering and fabricating cost-effective and high-performing bifunctional catalysts for ammonia borane (AB) hydrolysis and methanolysis is paramount for their commercial availability. A series of rattle-structured CuO/Co 3 O 4 @C microsphere bifunctional catalysts for AB hydrolysis and methanolysis were produced using a simple hard template etching approach. The CuO/Co 3 O 4 @C-4 (4 refers to designed the mole ratio of Cu/Co) exhibits the best activity with TOF of 18.8 and 26.8 mol H2 ·mol cat -1 ·min −1 for AB hydrolysis and methanolysis, respectively. It is discovered that the excellent performance is mainly attributed to its unique rattle structure and the synergetic effect between Co 3 O 4 and CuO . Kinetic isotope effect (KIE) experiments and infrared spectroscopy were applied to investigate AB hydrolysis and methanolysis reaction mechanisms. A suggested mechanism for AB methanolysis on rattle-structured CuO/Co 3 O 4 @C-4 is proposed based on the experiment results. This work could provide useful guidance for the construction of high-performance bifunctional catalysts for AB hydrolysis and methanolysis for hydrogen production.
