Novel thin layer graphite encapsulated α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles were fabricated via a facile molecular self-assembly approach. This α-Fe 2 O 3 @graphite composite, used as anode in LIBs , exhibited a stable specific capacity of 518.5 mAhg −1 at the current density of 1000 mAg −1 with 88.2% of retention up to 1000 cycles and delivered a reversible capacity of 374 mAhg −1 even at 5C rate. The high cyclic stability and superior rate performance may be addressed to the formed graphite coating layer, which can buffer the volume expansion, enhance the structural stability and increase the electrical conductivity of the Fe 2 O 3 . Moreover, the thin layer graphite coating structure can provide high specific surface area, sufficient void space to shorten the pathway of Li ions , improve the electrolyte penetration and accelerate the electrochemical Li ion storage.

The use of high-surface-area materials in loading α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles presents an intriguing approach to improve the electrocatalytic efficiency of overall water splitting. Nevertheless, the effective management of α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticle size to prevent their agglomeration continues to pose a significant challenge. This study used bio-based porous carbon with a specific surface area of 2876 m 2 /g and a mesoporous ratio of 95 % as a carrier to effectively disperse and inhibit the growth of α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles. The Fe 2 O 3 /NSC -30 was synthesized using urea as a precipitant through an ethylene glycol-assisted hydrothermal method accompanied by high-temperature calcination, with the α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticle size being approximately 5.5 nm. The synergistic effect between the ultra-small nanoparticles and the mesoporous structure facilitates the effective diffusion of electrolyte and exposes more catalytic active sites. The Fe 2 O 3 /NSC -30 exhibited remarkable catalytic performance in the OER and HER, as evidenced by the respective low overpotentials of 270 mV and 250 mV at 20 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, when Fe 2 O 3 /NSC -30 was utilized in the overall water-splitting reaction, a low cell voltage of 1.70 V was sufficient to achieve a current density of 20 mA cm −2 . In this study, a new method was proposed for loading ultra-small nanoparticles onto bio-derived mesoporous carbon for promoting overall water splitting with remarkable efficiency.

The development of an innovative peroxidase mimic is crucial for achieving accurate and low-cost naked-eye detection for pesticide residues in agricultural products. Herein, a visual sensor for chlorpyrifos was engineered by employing γ-Fe 2 O 3 /thiophene-sulfur-doped graphene (γ-Fe 2 O 3 /t-SG) magnetic nanocomposite as an artificial nanozyme . The γ-Fe 2 O 3 /t-SG magnetic nanocomposite with single–crystalline structure was fabricated by a facile thermal-treatment strategy by controlling the annealing temperature between graphene oxide (GO) and ferric sulfate. Significantly, the resulting γ-Fe 2 O 3 /t-SG magnetic nanocomposite revealed the markable peroxidase-like activity toward 3,3,5,5-tetramethyl benzidine oxidation (TMB). A novel colorimetric method for the rapid detection of chlorpyrifos was developed based on the high enzyme-like activity of γ-Fe 2 O 3 /t-SG magnetic nanocomposite and the inhibition of acetylcholinesterase activity by chlorpyrifos. This colorimetric sensor demonstrated excellent performance in chlorpyrifos quantification, with a linear range from 0.5 to 1000 μg mL −1 and a detection limit of 0.17 μg mL −1 (S/N = 3). The stability, ease of separation, and high peroxidase-like catalytic activity of γ-Fe 2 O 3 /t-SG magnetic nanocomposite makes it as an ideal candidate for a wide range of potential applications as peroxidase mimetics.

Designing cost-effective and highly stable heterostructures with synergistic active sites could simultaneously catalyze the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) for (sea) water splitting. However, there are still challenges in maintaining the catalytic performance of individual materials and in constructing intimate interfaces. Herein, a novel corrosion engineering method is provided to prepare self-standing Fe2O3-Pt/NF nanoflowers where ultra-small amounts of Pt combined with Fe2O3 are in situ grown on nickel foam (NF) in the corrosion system of “H2PtCl6–NaCl–FeCl3”. The synthesized Fe2O3-Pt/NF shows the presence of a Pt–O bond, which can regulate the electronic structure of the active sites and optimize the binding energy of the reaction intermediates, leading to an improvement in catalytic performance. Compared with Pt/NF and FeOOH/NF, the Fe2O3-Pt/NF heterostructure exhibits remarkable electrocatalytic activities with overpotentials reaching 94 mV and 265 mV for the HER and OER, respectively, at a high current density of 100 mA cm−2 in alkaline solution. Furthermore, the self-assembled electrolytic cell employing Fe2O3-Pt/NF as the bifunctional electrode only requires potentials of 1.60 V and 1.61 V to achieve a current density of 100 mA cm−2 in overall water and seawater splitting, respectively. This material remained stable for 10 hours without obvious attenuation, indicating its good environmental adaptability and stability. Specifically, the enhanced catalytic activity and stability can be ascribed to the abundant active sites of nanoflowers, fast electron transfer rate of intimate interfaces, and strong electronic interaction between Pt atoms and Fe2O3. This work provides a new insight into the construction of highly efficient co-catalysts with intimate interfaces based on corrosion engineering methods.

In this work, we demonstrate the fabrication of polypyrrole (PPy) decorated TiO2/Fe2O3 (TiO2/Fe2O3/PPy) composite nanofibers with a core–shell structure as an artificial enzyme system with a high peroxidase-like activity. The TiO2/Fe2O3 nanofibers with a diameter in the range of 40–150 nm and a relatively narrow distribution of diameter size are prepared via an electrospinning technique and followed by a calcination process. Then we are able to in situ polymerize a layer of PPy on the surface of the TiO2/Fe2O3 nanofibers by using Fe2O3 on the surface of nanofibers as an oxidant. The resulting ternary TiO2/Fe2O3/PPy composite nanofibers exhibit an enhanced peroxidase-like activity toward the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of H2O2 over independent TiO2, Fe2O3 and TiO2/Fe2O3 composite nanofibers due to the synergistic effect. On the basis of the high peroxidase-like activity, a simple approach for the colorimetric detection of H2O2 with a detection limit of 2.4 μM and a linear detection range from 2 to 50 μM has been proposed. This work offers a new way for manipulating the enzyme-like performance of electrospun nanofibers for a wide range of potential applications in biosensing and environmental monitoring.

One of the challenges for the application of energetic materials is their energy-retaining capabilities after long-term storage. In this study, we report a facile method to fabricate superhydrophobic Al/Fe 2 O 3 nanothermite film by combining electrophoretic deposition and surface modification technologies. Different concentrations of dispersion solvents and additives are investigated to optimize the deposition parameters. Meanwhile, the dependence of deposition rates on nanoparticle concentrations is also studied. The surface morphology and chemical composition are characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A static contact angles as high as 156° shows the superhydrophobicity of the nanothermite film. Natural and accelerated aging tests are performed and the thermal behavior is analyzed. Thermal analysis shows that the surface modification contributes to significantly improved energy-release characteristics for both fresh and aged samples, which is supposed to be attributed to the preignition reaction between Al 2 O 3 shell and FAS-17. Superhydrophobic Al/Fe 2 O 3 nanothermite film exhibits excellent long-time storage stability with 83.4% of energy left in natural aging test and 60.5% in accelerated aging test. This study is instructive to the practical applications of nanothermites, especially in highly humid environment.

Researchers remain attracted to the development of more efficient and cost-effective materials for the degradation of organic dyes in wastewater. Ultra-small (sub-5 nm) Fe 2 O 3 nanocrystals embedding magnetic porous carbon, referred to as Fe 2 O 3 @C, in which starch is used as a carbon source, is demonstrated, and is synthesized by a facile microwave-enhanced high-temperature ionothermal method within 4 min. The Fe 2 O 3 @C obtained is used as a peroxidase-mimicking catalyst in heterogeneous Fenton-like reactions to degrade organic dyes (i.e., methylene blue) with aid from the green oxidant, hydrogen peroxide. Because of its unique structure and high specific surface area, Fe 2 O 3 @C displays enhanced treatment properties in the degradation of methylene blue. Moreover, Fe 2 O 3 @C demonstrates stability and resistance to a broad range of pH, recyclability, and convenient separation. This promising peroxidase-mimicking composite material may have potential applications in degradation of organic pollutants in the environmental cleaning field.

For high-performance microwave absorption materials, component integration, structure tailorability and light weight are of practical significance. Herein, a new three-dimensional magnetic composite, namely carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-intercalated nitrogen-doped graphene (N-GN) embedded with Fe2O3 NPs (referred to as Fe2O3/N-GN/CNTs), were fabricated by a solvothermal method for use as synergistic microwave absorbers. Electronic microscopy investigation shows that the Fe2O3 NPs, which formed in situ, are uniformly dispersed on the N-doped graphene nano-sheets without aggregation and that the CNTs have been successfully inserted into the layers of nano-sheets. In addition, X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectrometry and a vector network analyzer (VNA) were used to investigate the structure, chemical composition, and electromagnetic parameters of the resulting Fe2O3/N-GN/CNTs composite. Taking advantage of the synergistic effect between Fe2O3 nanocrystals with magnetic loss and N-GN/CNTs with dielectric loss, the 3D Fe2O3/N-GN/CNTs composite shows excellent microwave absorption capabilities with highly efficient performance. A maximum reflection loss of −45.8 dB can be achieved at 9.32 GHz with a matching thickness of only 3 mm, and the effective absorption (below −10 dB) bandwidth reaches 14.5 GHz (3.5 to 18.0 GHz). The excellent microwave absorption of the as-prepared composites can be related to the integrated characteristics of good impedance matching and Debye relaxation, high attenuation, strong dipole polarization and interface polarization. Therefore, these results indicate that the newly designed Fe2O3/N-GN/CNTs composite is an ideal candidate for use as a synergistic microwave absorber to address electromagnetic pollution.

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on sulfite activation have been demonstrated to achieve cost-effective and highly efficient abatement of organic pollutants. In this work, the manganese-doped γ-Fe 2 O 3 catalyst (Mn-γ-Fe 2 O 3 ) is constructed based on the properties of Mn(II) with surface oxygen vacancy regulation and as an active site for sulfite activation. The increase of the Mn(II) doping ratio is favorable for the generation of surface oxygen vacancy with the content being enhanced more than two times when the Mn(II) doping ratio is 0.09 compared with that of γ-Fe 2 O 3 . The iohexol (IOX) abatement efficacy by sulfite activation with Mn-γ-Fe 2 O 3 is positively correlated with the oxygen vacancy content, in which SO 4 •− is the major free radical responsible for IOX degradation and HO • plays a secondary role. The presence of surface oxygen vacancy on the Mn-γ-Fe 2 O 3 exhibits low electrochemical resistance. The theoretical calculations support the enhancement of the electron transfer between Mn-γ-Fe 2 O 3 and sulfite with more negative adsorption energy and strong interaction of iron and manganese atoms. By analyzing the valence variation before and after the reaction, both > Mn(II) and > Fe(III) can participate in the acceleration of sulfite autoxidation process to generate radicals. Application of surface oxygen vacancy enriched Mn-γ-Fe 2 O 3 for sulfite activation exhibits good adaptability to different real water matrices and thus have some potential for practical applications.

Currently, the surface structure modification of photocatalysts is one of the effective means of enhancing their photocatalytic efficiency. Therefore, it is critically important to gain a deeper understanding of how the surface of α-Fe2O3 photocatalysts influences catalytic activity at the nanoscale. In this work, α-Fe2O3 catalysts were prepared using the solvothermal method, and four distinct morphologies were investigated: hexagonal bipyramid (THB), cube (CB), hexagonal plate (HS), and spherical (RC). The results indicate that the hexagonal bipyramid (THB) exhibits the highest degradation activity towards tetracycline (TC), with a reaction rate constant of k = 0.0969 min−1. The apparent reaction rate constants for the cube (CB), hexagonal plate (HS), and spherical (RC) morphologies are 0.0824, 0.0726, and 0.0585 min−1, respectively. In addition, it has been observed that the enhancement of photocatalytic activity is closely related to the increase in surface area, which provides more opportunities for interactions between Fe2+ and holes. The quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results indicate that the ˙O2, ˙OH and h+ contribute mainly to the degradation of TC in the system. This research contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of catalyst surface alterations and their impact on catalytic performance.

The prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer have always been the focus of medical research. In this study, a label-free, rapid, simple, sensitive, and specific method for the detection of HPV16 E7 oncoprotein was developed. The electrochemical biosensor platform was constructed by magnetic self-assembly of α-Fe 2 O 3 /Fe 3 O 4 @Au nanocomposites onto the surface of magnetic glass carbon electrode (MGCE), and the nanocomposite was connected to aptamer through Au S bond to construct a probe to capture HPV16 E7. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were applied to verify the performance of the constructed biosensor. The condition optimization and performance analysis were carried out by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Under optimal conditions, the biosensor exhibited a strong linearity between current value and the logarithm of HPV16 E7 oncoprotein concentration in the range of 10 pg/mL – 0.1 μg/mL, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 159 fg/mL and a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 530 fg/mL, and it also revealed excellent reproducibility, long-term stability, and anti-interference ability. In a word, the biosensor would contribute to the early diagnosis of oncoprotein HPV16 E7 and had promising application prospects.

Flexible pressure sensors are widely used in wearable electronics. In recent years, it is still a challenge to prepare high-sensitivity and high-performance pressure sensors, though flexible pressure sensors have made significant progress. Therefore, a new sensor structure is designed in this study. This structure is composed of sea urchin-like Fe 2 O 3 as a spacer layer, which is sandwiched between two laser-induced graphene (LIG)/polyimide (PI) films. Additionally, a flexible multifunctional sensing device with both health monitoring and alarm functions is prepared based on the excellent mechanical properties and thermal conductivity of LIG. Multifunctional sensing devices have high sensitivity, integrated monitoring, and alarm functions. Specifically, the sensitivity of the pressure sensor is 603 kPa −1 for the pressure ranges of 0–10 kPa. The pressure sensor possesses a working range of up to 200 kPa and good cycle stability (for over 3000 loading–unloading cycles). Furthermore, LIG is employed as a heater to realize the alarm function. In this work, the combination of high performance and simple methods provides an effective method for the development of the integration of multifunctional pressure sensors for wearable electronic devices.
