In situ synthesis of novel Cu2CO3(OH)2 decorated 2D TiO2 nanosheets with efficient photocatalytic H2 evolution activity

Hao Xu,Dongsheng Dai,Songsong Li,Lei Ge,Yangqin Gao

Semiconductor-based photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water with earth-abundant and low cost co-catalysts has attracted much attention. Herein, novel Cu2(OH)2CO3 decorated 2D TiO2 nanosheets for photocatalytic water splitting were synthesized by a facile in situ synthetic method. The chemical and photophysical properties of Cu2(OH)2CO3/TiO2 nanosheets were investigated by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis diffusion reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) analysis. At an optimal Cu2(OH)2CO3 loading content of 1.5 mol%, the hybrid photocatalyst delivers a high photocatalytic H2 production rate of 1555.07 μmol g−1 h−1. Such enhanced photocatalytic activity is attributed to tight interfaces formed between Cu2(OH)2CO3 nanoparticles and TiO2 nanosheets, which play a vital role in the separation of photo-excited carriers, and the formation of active Cu1+ and Cu0 species can also benefit the charge separation process by reducing the over-potential of water reduction. Based on the above results, a possible mechanism is proposed and further verified using photoluminescence (PL) spectra. This work may provide more insight into the synthesis of novel Cu2(OH)2CO3/TiO2 nanosheets with high photocatalytic H2 evolution activity for solar-to-chemical conversion and utilization.

Comparative Study of Two Different TiO2 Film Sensors on Response to H2 under UV Light and Room Temperature

Xiaoying Peng,Zhongming Wang,Pan Huang,Xun Chen,Xianzhi Fu,Wenxin Dai

An anatase TiO2film sensor was prepared by a facile in-situ method on the interdigitated Au electrode deposited on the alumina substrate. The structure, morphology and the optical properties of the in-situ TiO2film sensor were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra. The photo-assisted gas sensitivities of the prepared film towards H2gas were evaluated at room temperature in N2and synthetic air atmospheres. As compared to TiO2film sensor prepared by drop-coating method, this in-situ TiO2film sensor exhibited a more compact structure composed of uniform TiO2microspheres as well as a better gas sensitivity towards H2under UV irradiation, especially in synthetic air. The photo-electrochemical measurements suggest that these improvements may be associated with the efficient charge transfer in the TiO2interface induced by the TiO2microsphere structure. This study might offer a feasible approach to develop photo-assisted gas sensors at ambient temperature.

Decorating Pd–Au Nanodots Around Porous In2O3 Nanocubes for Tolerant H2 Sensing Against Switching Response and H2S Poisoning

Xinhua Zhao,Lingling Du,Xiaxia Xing,Zhenxu Li,Yingying Tian,Xiaoyu Chen,Xiaoyan Lang,Huigang Liu,Dachi Yang

With the recently-booming hydrogen (H 2 ) economy by green H 2 as the energy carriers and the newly-emerged exhaled diagnosis by human organ-metabolized H 2 as a biomarker, H 2 sensing is simultaneously required with fast response, low detection limit, and tolerant stability against humidity, switching, and poisoning. Here, reliable H 2 sensing has been developed by utilizing indium oxide nanocubes decorated with palladium and gold nanodots (Pd–Au NDs/In 2 O 3 NCBs), which have been synthesized by combined hydrothermal reaction, annealing, and chemical bath deposition. As-prepared Pd–Au NDs/In 2 O 3 NCBs are observed with surface-enriched NDs and nanopores. Beneficially, Pd–Au NDs/In 2 O 3 NCBs show 300 ppb-low detection limit, 5 s-fast response to 500 ppm H 2 , 75%RH-high humidity tolerance, and 56 days-long stability at 280 °C. Further, Pd–Au NDs/In 2 O 3 NCBs show excellent stability against switching sensing response, and are tolerant to H 2 S poisoning even being exposed to 10 ppm H 2 S at 280 °C. Such excellent H 2 sensing may be attributed to the synergistic effect of the boosted Pd–Au NDs’ spillover effect and interfacial electron transfer, increased adsorption sites over the porous NCBs’ surface, and utilized Pd NDs’ affinity with H 2 and H 2 S. Practically, Pd–Au NDs/In 2 O 3 NCBs are integrated into the H 2 sensing device, which can reliably communicate with a smartphone.

Manganese dioxides with different exposed crystal plane supported on g-C3N4 for photocatalytic H2 evolution from water splitting

Xuecheng Liu,Linjie Yan,Xiting Hu,Hongli Feng,Bingke Guo,Xia Ha,Hui Xu,Ruiqi Wang,Xuemei Tan,Hongyu Huang

A series of MnO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 composites with different exposed crystal plane were successfully prepared by different synthesized method. UV–Vis, PL , ESR and electrochemical results suggest that the visible-light absorbance, photoexcited electron-separation efficiency and oxygen defects are greatly dependent on the exposed crystal-faceted MnO 2 supported on g-C 3 N 4 . The experimental results display that the exposed crystal plane of MnO 2 have great influences on the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance, and the m-MnOCN composite with exposed (111) crystal plane exhibits superior photocatalytic performance for the release of H 2 under visible light irradiation , followed by the order of b-MnOCN [002]> p-MnOCN [110]. Moreover, Mechanism studies have shown that the possible mechanism of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction is Z-scheme mechanism.

Single-Precursor to Dual-Function: A Transformable Metal–Organic Framework Nanoplatform for Photocatalytic H2 Evolution and CO2 Reduction

Yi Lu,Yifan Wang,Ke Ye,Zhihai Ke

Precisely engineered nanoplatforms capable of controlled structural evolution from atomically dispersed sites to confined nanoparticles provide opportunities for multifunctional solar fuel production. Herein, we report a “two-in-one” photocatalytic strategy based on a transformable metal–organic framework (MOF) nanoplatform that enables two distinct solar fuel pathways from a single precursor. Microwave-assisted atomic-level engineering affords Pt1/In2O3/UiO-66-NH2, a nanostructured composite featuring atomically dispersed Pt sites anchored within an In2O3-modified MOF architecture. This atomic-scale configuration delivers efficient visible-light-driven H2 evolution with a rate of 2749.6 μmol g–1 h–1, aided by favorable hydrogen adsorption energy (ΔGH* = −0.39 eV). Controlled pyrolysis transforms the same precursor into PtNP/In2O3/N–C, in which confined Pt nanoparticles (2.3 ± 0.4 nm) are embedded in a conductive N-doped carbon matrix, enabling efficient photocatalytic CO2-to-CO conversion with a CO production rate of 4758.1 μmol g–1 h–1. This work demonstrates how controlled atomic-to-nanoscale structural evolution within a unified MOF-derived platform can direct functional specialization, providing a design principle for multifunctional photocatalytic systems.

Synergistic enhancement of photocatalytic H2 evolution via Fe doping and S-scheme heterojunction of MIL-68(Fe)/ZnIn2S4

Yufei Chen,Luyao Li,Ying Wang,Siqi Wan,Conghui Liu,Xingang Kong,Jianfeng Huang,Changqing Liu,Wenjie Huang,Lixiong Yin

Solar-driven photocatalytic hydrogen evolution represents a promising strategy, yet constructing photocatalysts that simultaneously deliver high activity and efficient visible-light utilization remains challenging. In this work, an Fe-ion-doped metal–organic framework, MIL-68(Fe), was synthesized and employed as substrate template for in-situ growth of ZnIn₂S₄ nanosheets. Subsequent one-pot synthesis yielded hollow tubular MIL-68(Fe)/ZnIn₂S₄ composite uniformly coated with ZnIn₂S₄ nanosheets, effectively mitigating severe stacking inherent to pure ZnIn₂S₄. Characterization confirmed successful Fe-ion doping, which significantly enhanced visible-light absorption. The optimal composite achieved photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 10.04 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 , representing 9.84-fold enhancement over pristine ZnIn₂S₄. Density functional theory calculations revealed that interfacial Fe O and in O bonds facilitate built-in electric field formation within [ZnS₄] layers, confirming successful S-scheme heterojunction construction. This unique structure preserves photogenerated charge carriers with stronger redox potentials, thereby substantially boosting overall photocatalytic activity. This study offers novel approach for photocatalyst modification and demonstrates synergistic combination of ion doping with S-scheme heterojunction engineering as highly promising research direction

Built-In Electric Field-Driven Electron Extraction at the BaTiO3/CdS Nanoparticle Interface for Enhanced Photocatalytic H2 Evolution

Tan Yulin,He Yanfang,Yang Ying,Zhang Huimin,Xie Yufang,Zhang Chenglin,Liu Yuan,Chen Mingming,Zhu Yefeng,Cao Dawei

Nanocatalysts hold broad application prospects for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. CdS is a visible-light-responsive photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution, but its efficiency is limited by fast electron–hole recombination and insufficient interfacial charge extraction at the nanoscale. Here, a nanoscale type-II BaTiO 3 /CdS (BTO/CdS) heterojunction was constructed through a chemical bath deposition process to introduce a built-in electric field (BIEF) at the oxide/sulfide interface. The Fermi-level mismatch between BTO and CdS nanostructures induces interfacial charge redistribution, forming a BIEF directed from BTO to CdS. Under light irradiation, this field drives photogenerated electrons from CdS toward BTO, thereby suppressing charge recombination and improving electron utilization for hydrogen evolution. The optimized BTO/CdS composite delivers a hydrogen evolution rate of 5.23 mmol·g –1 ·h –1 under simulated sunlight, which is 5.5 and 40.2 times higher than those of pure CdS (0.95 mmol·g –1 ·h –1 ) and BTO (0.13 mmol·g –1 ·h –1 ), respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) consistently support the BIEF-directed charge transfer pathway. This study clarifies how interfacial electric-field engineering in BTO/CdS nanostructures promotes directional electron extraction and improves CdS-based photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

~100% upcycling of chlorinated/fluorinated plastic mixtures to H2 and nanotubes over FeNi/Ni/C by microwave catalysis

Zhao Jun,Yang Jianlong,Wang Duanda,Zhang Huanrong,Jia Qianqian,Zhang Lei,An Zhenguo,Xue Mianqi,Xie Haijiao,Ma Wangjing,Zhang Lu,Zhao Sui,Tang Junwang

The catalytic upcycling of plastic mixtures into H 2 and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) represents a transformative strategy for advancing plastic management and the circular economy. Herein, an in-situ constructed high-performance FeNi/Ni/C catalyst combined with prompt microwave catalysis enables efficient conversion of LDPE-PVC, LDPE-HDPE-PP-PS-PVC-PTFE and landfilled waste mixture into valuable H 2 and CNTs, resulting in near-quantitative atom economy (i.e., H 2 and carbon efficiencies are nearly 100%) together with H 2 and CNTs yields reaching >922 mmol g -1 catalyst  and >10600 mg g -1 catalyst , respectively. Furthermore, this microwave catalysis strategy presents an excellent stability (>35 cycles) via Cl/F-based regeneration and energy efficiency (80% reduction vs. traditional thermal catalysis), alongside a high turnover number of 107.6 mol carbon mol -1 NiFe . Fundamentally, the Ni species contribute to C-H breaking, and Fe is beneficial for CNT formation during plastic decomposition. Here, we show a cost-effective platform for upcycling of chlorinated/fluorinated plastic mixtures, aligning with resource circularity objectives.

Ni single-atom anchored g-C3N4 via supramolecular self-assembly assisted pre-oxidation for efficient photocatalytic H2 production

Bingxin Zhou,Yuebin Liu,Shuangshuang Ding,Leixia Meng,Huijuan Jing,Chaochao Tian,Ruijie Guo,Sheng Liu,Aiguo Zhou,Gui-Fang Huang,Wei-Qing Huang

To address the critical issues in nickel single-atom catalysts, including severe aggregation, poor controllability of coordination environment, and weak metal-support interaction. Herein, melamine-cyanuric acid supramolecules were used as precursors. One-step air calcination and pre-oxidation followed by argon calcination were adopted to fabricate a series of Ni single-atom decorated g-C 3 N 4 photocatalysts (CN-Ni x -I and CN-Ni x -II series). The pre-oxidation treatment significantly increased the specific surface area of the material, narrowed the band gap, and shifted the conduction band potential to a more negative direction, thereby enhancing the light-harvesting capability and the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers. The optimal sample CN-Ni 2 -II exhibited a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 920.12 μmol h −1 g −1 , which was 4.55 times that of pure CN-II and 2.76 times that of the one-step calcined sample CN-Ni 2 -I. Mechanism analysis confirmed that the synergistic effect of the strong interfacial interaction co-constructed by C–O–Ni bonds and N coordination, the optimized band structure, and the hierarchical mesoporous structure was the core driving force for the significant improvement of its photocatalytic performance. This work provides a new path for the simple preparation and performance regulation of high-efficiency non-noble metal single-atom photocatalysts, and also offers practical reference for the interfacial engineering design of single-atom catalytic systems.

Regulating Reactive Oxygen Species with H2 over PdCu/ZnO for Selective Photocatalytic Aerobic Oxidation of Methane to Methanol

Fan Chen,Jinming Wang,Yuan He,Dandan Liu,Lin Hu,Rui Shi,Yana Liu,Jiguang Zhang,Yunfeng Zhu,Jun Wang

Photocatalytic aerobic oxidation of methane (CH4) to methanol (CH3OH) offers an alternative to the current energy-intensive route for CH4 utilization, while suffering from the activity-selectivity trade-off due to the uncontrolled generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Herein, we perform the photocatalytic CH4 aerobic oxidation in the presence of H2 over a PdCu NPs-modified ZnO catalyst, which exhibits a CH3OH yield of 13.5 mmol gcat–1 h–1 and a selectivity of 71.1%, surpassing many previously reported results. The introduction of H2 enables more ROS production simultaneously from photoelectron-induced O2 reduction and in situ-produced H2O2, facilitating the conversion of CH4. Compared to Pd, the PdCu cocatalyst favors the generation of more •OOH radicals in the ROS. More importantly, it is proposed that intermediate CH3OOH can be converted to CH3OH by H2-derived Pd–H species, which could also scavenge the excessive •OH radicals and holes, thus promoting the productivity of CH3OH and suppressing overoxidation. This work provides a strategy to regulate ROS formation for efficient CH4 oxidation into CH3OH under mild conditions.

Coupling Photothermal Effect into Efficient Photocatalytic H2 Production by Using a Plate-like Cu@Ni Core-shell Cocatalyst

Xinyang Guo,Fei Xue,Shikai Xu,Shaohua Shen,Hongwen Huang,Maochang Liu

Graphical How do you wave ? In this work, we realized the coupling of localized photothermal effect into a cocatalytic material by developing a unique core-shell Cu@Ni nanoplate cocatalyst for efficient photocatalytic H 2 production from water. Specifically, Cu nanoplate could induce localized hot spots on Ni nanoparticles via a visible-light-driven surface plasma resonance effect. As a result, photogenerated electrons transferred from g-C 3 N 4 to Ni, could be elevated to a more energetic state, leading to a substantially improved photocatalytic activity. The general moderate reaction condition in solar photocatalytic hydrogen production (i. e., near ambient pressure, room temperature) makes interfacial mass and energy transfer extremely slow, even by employing a cocatalytic material (usually in the form of noble metal nanoparticles or their counterparts). Herein, by fabricating well-defined Cu@Ni core-shell nanoplate cocatalyst and further incorporating it with a g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst, we demonstrate that interfacial processes could be significantly improved by coupling localized photothermal effect into a cocatalyst. Specifically, Cu nanoplate can induce localized strong hot spots on Ni nanoparticles via a visible-light-driven surface plasma resonance effect. As a result, photogenerated electrons transferred from g-C 3 N 4 to Ni, could be elevated to a more energetic state, leading to a substantially improved photocatalytic activity toward H 2 evolution from water. The highest hydrogen generation rate reaches 55 μmol h −1 g −1 , 110 times of that pristine g-C 3 N 4 . This work indicates that photoelectric and photothermal effects can be effectively coupled by integrating metal hetero-nanoparticles.

Engineered charge transfer and reactive site over hierarchical Ti3C2T x MXene@In2S3-NiS toward enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution

Guanshun Xie,Yisong Zhu,Changqiang Yu,Xiuqiang Xie,Nan Zhang

Steering photogenerated electron flow to the effective reactive sites is ideal for photocatalytic H2 evolution. Herein, as a proof-of-concept, NiS is coupled with a typical Schottky heterojunction of Ti3C2Tx MXene@In2S3 through the photodepotition method towards improving the photocatalytic H2 evolution performance. In addition to the Schottky effect-mediated electron transfer in Ti3C2Tx MXene@In2S3 heterojunctions, p–n junctions form between In2S3 and NiS to extract photoinduced electrons, which is found to cooperate with the role of effective H2 evolution reactive sites. The synergistic dual functions of NiS cooperate with Ti3C2Tx MXene promote multichannel electron transfer in Ti3C2Tx MXene@In2S3-NiS hybrids to improve the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) efficiency by 41 times compared to the bare In2S3. These results enlighten the engineering of the spatial transfer of photoinduced electrons to the reactive sites toward boosting the efficiency of photocatalytic HER.
