Herein, we develop a novel strategy for preparing all-inorganic cesium lead halide (CsPbX3, X = Cl, Br, I) perovskite nanocrystals (NCs)@Zn-based metal-organic framework (MOF) composites through interfacial synthesis. The successful embedding of fluorescent perovskite NCs in Zn-MOFs is due to the in situ confined growth, which is attributed to the re-nucleation of water-triggered phase transformation from Cs4PbBr6 to CsPbBr3. The controllable synthesis of mixed-halide based composites with various emission wavelength can be achieved by adding the desired amount of halide (Cl or I) salts in the re-nucleation process. More importantly, the anion exchange reaction is inhibited among various composites with different halogen atoms by being trapped in MOFs. Besides, a white light-emitting diode (WLED) is produced using a blue LED chip with the green-emitting and red-emitting composites, which has a color coordinate of (0.3291, 0.3272) and a wide color gamut. This work provides a novel route to achieving perovskite NCs growth in MOFs, which also can be extended to the other NCs embedded in frames as well.

Pursuing a selective and stable optical sensor for the reliable detection of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) is critical to controlling and reducing the risk of exposure to human. Here, we elaborately prepared an atomic copper(I)-carbon nitride (Cu-CN) peroxidase-mimic catalyst and therefore developed a reliable and accessible PFOS detection method. Well-distributed Cu(I) atoms are exclusively anchored within CN nanosized matrix as identified Cu-CN single-site active centers. Benefiting from the high peroxidase-mimic catalytic capability and colloidal stability, Cu-CN exhibits outstanding detection of PFOS selectively in the range of 0.07 to 3 μM coupled with the detection limit of 14.9 nM. The occupation of atomic Cu(I) specific catalytic sites caused by strong PFOS coordination and the fluorophilic interaction between PFOS should be responsible for the damping of TMB oxidation. Moreover, this detection platform was also used successfully to detect PFOS in three real water samples with RSD ≤ 8.37%. This well-established colorimetric sensing system based on peroxidase-mimic capability of single-atom catalyst is promising for the detection of other hazards in aquatic environment.

Considering the increasingly serious levels of antibiotic pollution, it is necessary to find new and efficient adsorbents. In this study, the adsorptive removal of a model quinolone antibiotic, ciprofloxacin (CIP), from wastewater is presented using a metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon. HKUST-1-derived carbon (HDC-1100) was obtained by high-temperature carbonization of the HKUST-1 precursor at 1100 °C. HDC-1100 has a regular octahedron shape decorated with Cu/Cu 2 O particles and has a microporous and mesoporous structure with abundant oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface. Within 48 h, HDC-1100 could reach adsorption equilibrium for 30 mg·L -1 CIP, and the kinetic data were fitted with a pseudo-first-order model and a pseudo-second-order model. In this study, the maximum adsorption capacity of HDC-1100 for CIP was as high as 592 mg·g −1 . The high adsorption capacity is attributed mainly to metal–organic complexation, electrostatic interactions, and hydrogen bonding. Also, the effects of environmental factors, such as pH, ionic strength, and humic acid, on the adsorption capacity were considered. This study is significant for the treatment of high-concentration antibiotic-polluted wastewater.

Luminescent Cu(I) hybrid materials are currently receiving increasing attention due to their rich photophysical properties with promising phosphors applications. However, the complex synthesis processes usually involving chemotoxic organic solutions largely hinder their practical applications. Herein, the authors introduce the highly luminescent copper(I) halide phosphors encapsulated in fumed silica synthesized via aqueous mechanochemical process. By using different precursors, they obtain blue, green, and orange emission copper(I) halide phosphors with high photoluminescence quantum yields. The green emission is owing to the formation of the well-known 0D (18-crown-6) 2 Na 2 (H 2 O) 3 Cu 4 I 6 (CNCI), while the blue and orange emissions are ascribed to the formation of the novel 1D (18-crown-6) 2 Na 2 (H 2 O) 3 Cu 2 Cl 4 (CNCCl) and 0D (18-crown-6) 2 Na 2 (H 2 O) 3 Cu 4 Br 6 (CNCBr) crystal structures, respectively. It is demonstrated that waterborne luminescent inks can be directly prepared from those phosphors via blending them with various waterborne polymers. The combination of three primary colors can lead to various spectra with multiple anti-counterfeiting functions. Further, such phosphors can also be embedded into polystyrene resin to form homogeneous luminescent composites, which can be used to prepare free-standing luminescent films and fabricate light-emitting diode (LED) with tunable emissions. This strategy opens a new avenue for the development of low-cost, highly luminescent phosphors.

Aristolochic acid I (AAI) is one of the nephrotoxic derivatives present in genera Aristolochia and Asarum. Although some detection strategies for monitoring AAI have been reported, the application of these methods is limited because they involve tedious preparation and require professional operation. In this work, bovine serum albumin (BSA) has been introduced as a reducing agent and stabilizing agent to synthesize gold nanoclusters with strong red fluorescence for the rapid and effective detection of AAI. Under excitation at 328 nm, the fluorescence intensity at the maximum emission wavelength of the bovine serum albumin-stabilized gold nanoclusters (BSA-AuNCs) decreased with the addition of AAI, and the degree of quenching showed a linear relationship with the concentration of AAI from 0.1–12.8 μg mL−1. The obtained BSA-AuNCs were stable, and quenching in the presence of AAI could be achieved within 10 seconds. Here, we have focused on the application of these gold nanoclusters as an optical sensing material for AAI in rat urine samples, including a discussion on the detection mechanism. The detection result of the fluorescent probe was consistent with that of the HPLC method. In view of this reality, the reported protein-AuNCs sensing platform can serve as a convenient detection strategy in toxicological analyses.

Antibiotic resistance is a serious problem all over the world. Inorganic metal oxide nanoparticles are suitable substitutional treatments for organic antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections. Various copper dopped ZnO nanocomposites were prepared with chemical deposition method in aqueous solution. X-ray diffraction (XRD) coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy results reveals that cuprous oxide is uniformly doped on the surface of ZnO nanoparticles , forming Cu 2 O/ZnO nanocomposites. In addition, from Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy analysis , the average size of prepared Cu 2 O/ZnO composite is about 30 nm. The antibacterial activity of the Cu 2 O/ZnO composite was examined on two bacteria strains: Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and Gram-negative Escherichia coli ( E. coli ). When the doping amount of Cu 2 O reaches more than 5%, a 3.58 log-reduction of S. aureus growth under visible light within 30 mins treatment was observed. The antibacterial activity of Cu 2 O/ZnO is 2.7-fold higher than pure ZnO and killing bacteria on E. coli with a 1.0 log-reduction in viability. Meanwhile, the bacteriological properties of Cu doped ZnO composites with different valence states (Cu 2+ , CuO, Cu 2 O, and Cu 0 ) were compared. Furthermore, the antibacterial mechanism was further discussed in this paper.

The unique chemical and physical properties of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) endow them with promising applications in the electrochemical sensing field. Herein, a novel label-free electrochemical sensing strategy for cardiac troponin I (cTnI) has been constructed on the basis of immunoaffinity-induced depression of the electrochemical signal of Cu-MOF-74. The electrochemical assay shows that the immunoaffinity reaction between cTnI and anti-cTnI on the electrode surface can effectively inhibit the electrochemical signal of electrode-confined Cu-MOF-74, suggesting that the Cu-MOF-74-based interface may find application in the label-free analysis of cTnI. Thus, Cu-MOF-74 acts as a bifunctional material in this strategy, namely, the immobilization matrix of probe molecules and the signal source of the sensing analysis. In addition, the reason for the electrochemical signal depression of Cu-MOF-74 induced by immunoaffinity reaction is attributed to the increase in the insulation layer and the blocking of the electrolyte diffusion from the bulk solution to the electrode surface. In this strategy, the analytical range of cTnI is from 0.01 pg mL–1 to 1.0 ng mL–1 and the detection limit is 4.5 fg mL–1. The Cu-MOF-74-based sensing interface is also reliable for cTnI analysis in real serum samples, showing that the biosensor has promising application in point-of-care testing (POCT) of myocardial injury-related diseases.

A type I nitroreductase-mimicking nanocatalyst based on 2H–MoS 2 /Co 3 O 4 nanohybrids for trace nitroaromatic compounds detection is reported in this work. For the preparation of nanocatalyst, ultrathin Co 3 O 4 nanoflakes array was in-situ grown onto 2H–MoS 2 nanosheets forming three-dimensional (3D) nanohybrid with large specific surface area as well as abundant active sites. The as-prepared nanocatalyst shows a specific affinity as well as high catalytic activity towards nitroaromatic compounds. Given the favorable nitroreductase-mimicking catalytic activity of 2H–MoS 2 /Co 3 O 4 nanohybrid, a sensitive and efficient electrochemical microsensor has been constructed for the detection of 2, 4, 6-trinitrotoluene (TNT). Under optimized conditions, the microsensor displayed sensitive response from μM to pM levels with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1 pM. We further employed photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis and high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) method to identify the nitroreductase-mimicking mechanism of 2H–MoS 2 /Co 3 O 4 nanohybrids towards 2, 4, 6- TNT. It was found that the abundant oxygen vacancies in ultrathin Co 3 O 4 nanoflakes played an essential role in determining its catalytic performance. Moreover, the developed MoS 2 /Co 3 O 4 nanozyme has a lower Michaelis-Menten constant (k m ) than that of nature nitroreductase demonstrating a good enzymatic affinity towards its substrates, and further generating a high catalytic activity. This research not only proposed a new type of nanozyme, but also developed a portable electrochemical microsensor for the detection of 2, 4, 6-TNT.

Neurofibromatosis type I (NF1) is an autosomal dominant genetic disease that is caused by mutations in the NF1 gene. Various studies have previously demonstrated that the mTOR complex 1 signaling pathway is essential for the NF1‑modulated osteogenic differentiation of bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). Additionally, the mTOR signaling pathway plays a notable role in autophagy. The present study hypothesized that NF1 could modulate the osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs by regulating the autophagic activities of BMSCs. In the present study, human BMSCs were cultured in an osteogenic induction medium. The expression of the NF1 gene was either knocked down or overexpressed by transfection with a specific small interfering RNA (siRNA) targeting NF1 or the pcDNA3.0 NF1‑overexpression plasmid, respectively. Autophagic activities of BMSCs (Beclin‑1, P62, LC3B I, and LC3B II) were determined using western blotting, electron microscopy, acridine orange (AO) staining and autophagic flux/lysosomal detection by fluorescence microscopy. In addition, the autophagy activator rapamycin (RAPA) and inhibitor 3‑methyladenine (3‑MA) were used to investigate the effects of autophagy on NF1‑modulated osteogenic differentiation in BMSCs. Inhibiting NF1 with siRNA significantly decreased the expression levels of autophagy markers Beclin‑1 and LC3B‑II, in addition to osteogenic differentiation markers osterix, runt‑related transcription factor 2 and alkaline phosphatase. By contrast, overexpressing NF1 with pcDNA3.0 significantly increased their levels. Transmission electron microscopy, AO staining and autophagic flux/lysosomal detection assays revealed that the extent of autophagosome formation was significantly decreased in the NF1‑siRNA group but significantly increased in the NF1‑pcDNA3.0 group when compared with the NC‑siRNA and pcDNA3.0 groups, respectively. In addition, the activity of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway [phosphorylated (p)‑PI3K, p‑AKT, p‑mTOR and p‑p70S6 kinase] was significantly upregulated in the NF1‑siRNA group compared with the NC‑siRNA group, and significantly inhibited in the NF1‑pcDNA3.0 group, compared with the pcDNA3.0 group. The knockdown effects of NF1‑siRNA on the autophagy and osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs were reversed by the autophagy activator RAPA, while the overexpression effects of NF1‑pcDNA3.0 on the autophagy and osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs were reversed by the autophagy inhibitor 3‑MA. In conclusion, results from the present study suggest at the involvement of autophagy in the NF1‑modulated osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs. Furthermore, NF1 may partially regulate the autophagic activity of BMSCs through the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway.

Many natural polysaccharides have significant anticancer activity with low toxicity, but the complex chemical structures make in-depth studies of the involved mechanisms extremely difficult. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the marine bacterial exopolysaccharide (exopolysaccharide 11 [EPS11]) on liver cancer metastasis to explore the underlying target protein and molecular mechanism. We found that EPS11 significantly suppressed cell adhesion, migration, and invasion in liver cancer cells. Proteomic analysis showed that EPS11 induced downregulation of proteins related to the extracellular matrix–receptor interaction signaling pathway. In addition, the direct pharmacological target of EPS11 was identified as collagen I using cellular thermal shift assays. Surface plasmon resonance and pull-down assays further confirmed the specific binding of EPS11 to collagen I. Moreover, EPS11 was shown to inhibit tumor metastasis by directly modulating collagen I activity via the β1-integrin–mediated signaling pathway. Collectively, our study demonstrated for the first time that collagen I could be a direct pharmacological target of polysaccharide drugs. Moreover, directly targeting collagen I may be a promising strategy for finding novel carbohydrate-based drugs.

In this study, a high-performance flexible reduced graphene oxide (rGO) paper electrode composed of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) for the detection of Sudan I was fabricated. Ag NPs were doped with rGO nanoheets by self-assemble and assembled into a paper electrode with layer-by-layer structure via vacuum filtration. Thanks to the highly efficient electrocatalysis of Ag NPs towards reduction of azo bond, the as-prepared hybrid paper can be used alone as a flexible sensor for the detection of Sudan I in chili powder, with the high sensitivity (22.93 μA μmol/L) and the low detection limit (41.3 nmol/L). The sensor also expressed good selectivity, repeatability, reproducibility, stability and recovery between 96.1% and 101.8% (RSD < 6%). With the advantages of low-cost and scalable production capacity, such Ag NPs/rGO functional papers can be used as flexible disposable sensors for electrochemical detection of Sudan I.

In order to study the effect of the substituents in the phosphonyl moiety of monoacylphosphine oxide (MAPO) on its stability and initiation performance, (2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)(phenyl)(benzoyl)phosphine oxide (TMBPO), (4-tolyl)(phenyl)(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide (4-MTPO) and (2,4-xylyl)(phenyl)(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide (2,4-DMTPO) were designed and prepared. Studies on TMBPO showed that the introduction of methyl groups into the phosphonyl moiety of MAPO significantly enhanced its stability and light absorption abilities. The photopolymerization of trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) showed that the initiation efficiency of 4-MTPO and 2,4-DMTPO were higher than that of TPO, regardless of whether it was initiated upon LED at 385 nm or 420 nm. In addition, the migration rates of 4-MTPO and 2,4-DMTPO in cured TMPTA were approximately 1/2 and 1/4 that of TPO, respectively.
