MOF-modified Enteromorpha prolifera biochar for efficient removal of enrofloxacin from mariculture wastewater

Wei Bao,Weijun Tian,Mengyuan Zou,Ke Yang,Bingkun Liu,Minghan Li,Bingjie Huo,Xinran Yu,Xinbo Wang

MIL-101(Fe)-modified E. prolifera biochar (MIL-BC) was successfully synthesized. • MIL-BC showed 89.14% enrofloxacin removal in mariculture wastewater. • MIL-BC showed over 86% removal efficiency at pH 3–5 and salinity 15–35‰. • Adsorption followed pseudo-second-order and Freundlich models. • Experimental and DFT results unraveled synergistic adsorption mechanisms. In this study, a metal-organic framework (MOF)-modified biochar (MIL-BC) was synthesized by decorating Enteromorpha prolifera -derived pristine biochar (BC) with MIL-101(Fe). Compared to BC, the adsorption performance of MIL-BC for enrofloxacin (ENR) in mariculture wastewater was significantly enhanced to 89.14%, and it maintained a high adsorption efficiency under varying solution pH and salinity conditions. Notably, this high adsorption efficiency remained practically stable across varying solution pH and salinity levels. Under acidic pH conditions, MIL-BC exhibited both acid resistance and high adsorption efficiency, achieving a peak adsorption removal of 97.77%. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms were well described by the pseudo-second-order and Freundlich models, respectively, indicating a heterogeneous multilayer adsorption process. The adsorption mechanisms primarily involved a synergistic combination of pore filling, π-π interactions, hydrogen bonding, complexation, electrostatic interactions, and hydrophobic interactions. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations corroborated that the higher adsorption energy of MIL-BC fundamentally contributes to its enhanced adsorption performance. In the treatment of real seawater aquaculture wastewater, MIL-BC demonstrated exceptional adsorption performance, validating its tremendous potential as a high-performance adsorbent. Maintaining a removal efficiency of over 70% after five cycles. Consequently, this study offers a viable and highly promising technical pathway for the efficient removal of antibiotics from seawater aquaculture effluents. Ag Nanoparticles Loaded on FeCo-MOF as High-Performance Lithium-Ion Battery Anode

Chang Liu,Mingjie Shi,Fafei Nie,Lingjian Meng,Zhongxiang Zhang,Fukun Ma,Yanmei Lei,Guidong Gao,Ningning Xing,Wenjie Tan,Yuanxing Cai

The development of electrode materials that combine high scalability with outstanding electrochemical performance is crucial for advancing lithium-ion battery technologies. Among various anode material systems, bimetallic organic frameworks have attracted extensive attention due to their ability to provide additional active sites and generate significant synergistic enhancement effects through the introduction of two distinct metal centers. However, their practical application in lithium-ion batteries is hindered by limited electron transport and insufficient structural stability during cycling. Therefore, we adopt a photoredox strategy to in situ deposit Ag nanoparticles on the surface of FeCo-MOF and successfully fabricated the Ag@FeCo-MOF composite anode material. The excellent electrochemical performance is primarily attributed to the high specific surface area of the MOF carrier and the synergistic effect of the bimetallic active sites. Meanwhile, the successful loading of Ag nanoparticles has constructed an efficient three-dimensional conductive network, increasing electronic conductivity by 100 times and significantly accelerating electron transport kinetics. Electrochemical tests indicate that the initial discharge specific capacity of Ag@FeCo-MOF is 534.2 mAh g−1 at a current density of 500 mA g−1, with Coulombic efficiency exceeding 98%. After 500 cycles, the discharge capacity remains at 513.9 mAh g−1 without significant decay.

Cerium-Mediated Redox Chemistry in MOF Coatings Enables Ultrastable Aqueous Zn Metal Batteries

Junyu Jiang,Jichang Sun,Liansheng Li,Kewei Hu,Pengyu Meng,Tianqi Yang,Wen-Jie Jiang,Qinghua Liang

Constructing artificial coatings on Zn metal anodes represents a promising approach to suppressing interfacial side reactions and enhancing reversibility for stable aqueous Zn metal batteries. Herein, Ce-mediated redox chemistry in Ce-UiO-66 MOF coating was explored to stabilize the aqueous Zn anode. We found that the Ce-UiO-66 coating facilitates multi-stage Zn 2+ desolvation due to its abundant carboxyl groups and an optimal porous structure. Moreover, the Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ redox-induced, abundant vacancies provide numerous zincophilic sites for preferential Zn 2+ adsorption and transport. Crucially, the reversible Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ redox behavior enables significant homogenization of electron/Zn 2+ distributions while accelerating interfacial charge transfer kinetics during repeated Zn plating/stripping. Consequently, a Zn anode with an optimal ∼5 µm Ce-UiO-66 coating achieves exceptional stability, highlighted by an ultralong cycling life exceeding 6000 h at 2.0 mA cm −2 and 1.0 mAh cm −2 , alongside an ultralow polarization voltage of ∼24 mV. High-rate stability over 2800 h is also maintained at 5.0 mA cm −2 and 1.0 mAh cm −2 . This work underscores the great potential of redox-active coatings, specifically leveraging Ce-mediated redox chemistry, to enable highly stable aqueous Zn metal batteries for practical applications.

Sulfur-Modified Low-Crystalline NiFe MOF-74 Precursors for Enhanced Alkaline Oxygen Evolution

Yangchen Wang,Ran Fang,Simeng Qi,Guanghui Li,Yi Sun,Ziyi Li,Lizi Yang

Sulfur incorporation modulates the electronic structure of NiFe-MOF-74. • Enhanced OER kinetics with low overpotential and small Tafel slope. • Operando EIS and ATR-FTIR reveal facilitated intermediate evolution. • DFT reveals optimized adsorption energetics via d-band modulation. • Electronic inheritance effect persists after electrochemical reconstruction. Regulating the local chemical environment of transition metal-based electrocatalysts is important for improving oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics, but the relationship among heteroatom modification, electrochemical reconstruction, and the resulting active phase remains difficult to establish unambiguously. Herein, a sulfur-modified low-crystalline NiFe MOF-74 precursor is developed to examine how sulfur-containing species influence the precursor coordination environment and subsequent OER behavior. Structural characterizations support the introduction of sulfur-containing species into the MOF-74-related precursor, accompanied by reduced crystallinity and a lower surface area. The optimized catalyst exhibits enhanced OER activity, delivering an overpotential of 257 mV at 10 mA cm⁻² with a Tafel slope of 63.4 mV dec⁻¹. Operando electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, methanol oxidation reaction probing, and operando ATR-FTIR measurements indicate that sulfur modification affects the electrochemical evolution process from precursor activation to oxygen-containing intermediate conversion. Post-OER XRD, XPS, and TEM mapping support reconstruction into a NiFe (oxy)hydroxide-like phase in which sulfur-containing species remain detectable after reconstruction. Density functional theory calculations based on representative reconstructed NiFeOOH/S-NiFeOOH models suggest that sulfur-associated local perturbation may induce electronic redistribution and reduce the maximum uphill free-energy change of the potential-determining step. These results are consistent with a possible sulfur-assisted evolution process in which sulfur-containing species modify the precursor and remain detectable after electrochemical reconstruction, while their exact role in the reconstructed active phase remains unresolved. Ambient-dried anisotropic MOF-loaded cellulose aerogel for efficient removal of Pb(II)

Haoran Shi,Jie Chen,Dongyang Han,Changhui Wang,Wenjun Huang,Jiandong Zhuang,Yan Yu,Xuexia Zhang

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-loaded cellulose aerogels show considerable promise for remediating water polluted by heavy metal ions. However, their practical application has been limited by energy-intensive drying methods and suboptimal performance. Herein, a low-cost, scalable preparation strategy to fabricate a MOF-loaded cellulose aerogel (denoted as b-CAT-Z) via ambient drying, employing bidirectional freezing combined with solvent exchange, without the need for toxic crosslinking agents. Specifically, tannic acid (TA)-modified cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and aramid nanofibers (ANF) form a robust skeleton, while MOFs (ZIF-8) anchored via hydrogen bonding and coordination interactions serve as nanofillers to enhance Pb(II) adsorption. The optimized b-CAT-Z aerogel exhibited an ultra-low density (20.3 mg/cm 3 ) and excellent mechanical properties, with a specific strength of 10.93 kN·m/kg. More importantly, benefiting from the construction of long-range ordered water transport channels, the b-CAT-Z aerogel prepared via bidirectional freezing demonstrates outstanding performance in adsorbing Pb(II), exhibiting a superior adsorption capacity (584.4 mg/g), removal efficiency (97.4%), and adsorption kinetics (reaching equilibrium within 180 min). These properties confer significant advantages over its counterparts prepared by random freezing (441.0 mg/g, 300 min) and unidirectional freezing (514.9 mg/g, 300 min). Remarkably, the b-CAT-Z aerogel still maintains a Pb(II) removal efficiency as high as 80.3% even after six adsorption-desorption cycles. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the oxygen-containing and imidazole groups in b-CAT-Z strongly bind Pb(II), acting as efficient adsorption sites. The b-CAT-Z aerogel demonstrated favorable recyclability. This work presents an ambient-dried strategy for fabricating high-performance cellulose aerogels, providing valuable insights for designing next-generation heavy metal adsorbents.

Spray-coating of lamellar MOF/ionic liquid membranes for high-performance H2 purification

Xiangyu Liu,Xiaohe Tian,Xinru He,Haishan Huan,Yueyangchao Yu,Tianhe Gu,Xinting Liu,Haomiao Liu,Jianing Tan,Xiangyi Zhang,Qing Li,Shaofei Wang

Hydrogen purification is essential for the transition to a clean energy economy, yet the practical application of membrane technology remains limited by the challenge of achieving high gas separation performance under industrial conditions. Herein, we report a facile layer-by-layer spray-coating approach to fabricate sandwich-structured membranes comprising CuBDC metal–organic framework (MOF) nanosheets serving as outer layers and ionic liquid (IL, [BMIM][BF 4 ]) as the inner layer. The IL is electrostatically confined within the CuBDC interlayers, effectively sealing non-selective defects while creating strong CO 2 -philic domains that retard CO 2 permeation. The optimized membrane delivers a moderate H 2 permeance over 1904 GPU and an H 2 /CO 2 selectivity of 12.6, surpassing the 2008 Robeson upper bound. Furthermore, process simulation of a two-stage membrane system demonstrates the potential to achieve >98% hydrogen purity with a recovery of 95.39%. With excellent stability over 100 h, this work establishes a scalable and energy-efficient pathway for industrial hydrogen purification.

Highly selective and sensitive colorimetric detection of nicosulfuron based on Cu-MOF nanozyme

Yannan Ma,Runzhong Yu,Boxiang Yao,Jiayu Chen,Han Zhang,Liyuan Zhang

A copper metal-organic framework composite nanozyme (Cu-MOF) with peroxidase-like activity was prepared using an improved room temperature method. Cu-MOF can catalyze H 2 O 2 to release (•OH), thereby oxidizing the colorless chromogenic substrate 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into a blue oxidized product (oxTMB), which has a maximum UV absorption peak at 652 nm. Nicosulfuron can regulate the electronic balance of the redox pair (Cu 2+ /Cu + ) on the Cu-MOF surface, thereby enhancing its peroxidase activity and promoting the deepening of the TMB blue color. Based on this principle, a colorimetric detection method for nicosulfuron was established. The linear range of this method is 0.2–10 μg/mL −1 , and the detection limit is 0.02 mg/kg. This method has been applied for the detection of nicosulfuronin corn samples, with recovery rate ranging from 90.88% to 117.33%, and all relative standard deviation being less than 4%.

Pore-confined and pore size-dependent peroxymonosulfate activation mechanism for MOF-derived Mn2O3

Sheng Tian,Wenhao Liu,Yulun Nie,Chao Yang,Jianbo Shi

Conventional Mn 2 O 3 catalysts, typically synthesized via co-precipitation using inorganic precursors, exhibit satisfactory peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation efficiency depending on their structure and Mn valence. However, the interplay between pore architecture and intrinsic activity remains poorly understood, limiting rational design of Mn 2 O 3 . Herein, a series of Mn 2 O 3 catalysts with tunable pore sizes (1.6–16.2 nm) and Mn valence states were synthesized via pyrolysis of three distinct Mn-MOF precursors (Mn-BDC, Mn-MOF-74, Mn-BTC) at different temperatures. Among eight MOF-derived Mn 2 O 3 , BDC-400 with the largest pore-size derived from Mn-BDC calcined at 400℃ demonstrated superior performance, achieving 93.5% sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal via PMS activation. Its degradation rate constant (0.0237 min⁻¹) was 1.45–3.34 times higher than those of catalysts with smaller pores (ranging from1.6–12.6 nm). Counterintuitively, multiple linear regression identified pore size, not Mn(III) content, as the dominant performance descriptor (β = 0.784). This is demonstrated as a pore-size-sieving effect by HA interference experiments and contact angle measurements: larger pores (e.g., 16.2 nm in BDC-400) drastically reduce mass transfer barriers for PMS/SMX, facilitating their access to the Mn(III)-enriched confined interior and thereby maximizing radical (SO₄•⁻/•OH) generation. This work shifts the design paradigm, demonstrating that engineering pore architecture to mitigate diffusion limitations is as critical as optimizing active sites for developing high-performance catalysts.

Enhancing electrochemiluminescence of porphyrin by bimetallic MOF as coreaction accelerator for dopamine determination

Yanjun Feng,Xiaomei Jiao,Yubao Lan,Zhuandi Zhu,Kainan Kang,Mingshuai Fan,Ze Wang,Jing Chen,Xiaoquan Lu

In this study, we present a bimetallic metal-organic framework (MOF), MIL-53(Fe/Co), as a novel and highly efficient co-reaction accelerator to enhance the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) performance of the TCPP/K₂S₂O₈ system. In stark contrast to the pristine TCPP/K₂S₂O₈ ECL system, the incorporation of MIL-53(Fe/Co) significantly improved the activation efficiency of the coreactant K₂S₂O₈, facilitating its dissociation into reactive oxygen radicals and yielding an approximately four-fold amplified ECL signal. Building upon this enhanced platform, we functionalized TCPP with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (3-APBA) to create a selective recognition probe (TCPP-3-APBA) for dopamine (DA) detection. The specific diol‑boronate interactions enabled efficient DA capture, which increased steric hindrance and quenching of the ECL signal in a concentration-dependent manner. By leveraging this mechanism, we constructed a highly sensitive ECL sensor for DA quantification, which exhibited a linear range of 0.1 nM to 10 μM with a detection limit of 0.03 nM. This sensor demonstrated excellent performance in complex biological matrices, thereby expanding the applications of bimetallic MOFs in electrochemical neurotransmitter sensing.

Synergistic ROS scavenging and metabolic remodeling by MOF-engineered exosomes alleviates multiorgan fibrosis

Yingying Liu,Haonan Zhang,Deshu Dai,Kun Yu,Xiyue Cao,Ruidong Ding,Bin Wang,Zhiwen Zhao,Yubang Wang,Xuzhu Gao,Cong Li,Jinzhen Cai,Xinwei Li,Qingguo Xu

ZIF-8 encapsulates urine-derived exosomes to enhance circulatory stability. • Polydopamine and specific antibodies enable precise multi-organ targeting. • The acidic pathological microenvironment triggers dynamic exosome release. • Exosomes and Cu-Cys nanozymes synergistically reverse multiorgan fibrosis. • This multifunctional platform provides a novel paradigm for clinical translation. Exosomes have emerged as an ideal therapeutic vehicle owing to their inherent biocompatibility, low immunogenicity, and capacity for efficient biomolecule delivery. Nevertheless, inherent limitations, such as poor stability, inadequate targeting specificity, and limited therapeutic mechanisms, significantly confine their clinical application. This study innovatively developed a multifunctional nanocomposite system (EXO@Cu-Cys@ZIF)PDA/Ab based on zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8). This system achieved high-efficiency exosome encapsulation and pH-responsive controlled release through microporous confinement effects and markedly improved circulatory stability via polydopamine (PDA) coating. Organ-targeting capability was also enhanced through specific antibody modifications. By integrating the reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging ability of Cu-Cys nanozymes with the gene regulatory function of exosomes, this platform can synergistically restore redox homeostasis, suppress key signaling pathways involved in fibrosis, and modulate lipid metabolism, thereby effectively reversing fibrosis in the lungs, liver, and kidneys. The system also addressed the bottleneck of traditional clinical application of exosomes through the three-dimensional synergy mechanism of “exosome protection and delivery system-nanozyme activity regulation-organ targeting module”. The system also provides a customized and universal solution for the simultaneous treatment of multiorgan-organ diseases. Engineering of defect–amine coupling in Mg-MOF-74 for boosting CO2 capture

Lin-Yuan Xiao,Chao-Yue Zhuo,Xiao-Nan Qin,Yue-Fei Zhang,Ziyi Li,Xiao Luo,Xiangjun Luo,Zhiwu Liang

Aminosilane concentration tunes Mg-MOF-74 structural evolution and porosity. • CO 2 adsorption exhibits high uptake at both ambient and high pressures. • The mechanism of how defects and amine groups synergistically enhance CO 2 capture capacity was studied. In this study, we report a rational design and synthesis of hierarchically porous 5/PA2-Mg-MOF-74@APTES with high CO 2 capacity through propionic acid (PA) modulation and amine functionalization (APTES). Characterization results confirmed that an optimized PA concentration effectively induced mesopore formation and exposed more unsaturated Mg 2+ sites, thereby generating hierarchical porosity, while subsequent grafting of APTES successfully introduced amino functional groups This combined strategy leverages both defect engineering and chemical functionalization, synergistically promoting CO 2 adsorption. Performance evaluations revealed that the optimal adsorbent 5/PA2-Mg-MOF-74@APTES(1:1), achieved a CO 2 uptake of 4.91 mmol·g −1 at atmospheric pressure (1 bar) and a remarkable uptake of 17.38 mmol·g −1 at high pressure (15 bar) with significantly improved CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity. This work explores a synergistic enhancement mechanism of CO 2 adsorption from the interplay of defect engineering and amine functionalization conducted by experimental characterization and theoretical calculations, which provides a novel strategy for the design and fabrication of high-efficiency CO 2 adsorbents suitable for diverse pressure applications.

Self-supporting degradable Zn-MOF/SA/CNF multifunctional photoactive membrane for water treatment

Kaihuai Duan,Tao Yang,Zhongyou Xu,Yijie Sun,Huiyun Hu,Hu Yang,Zhenliang Xu

Self-supporting and degradable (Zn-MOF/SA/CNF) acts as multifunctional photoactive membrane. • Zn-MOF acts as a porous skeleton to enhance flux, SA as a binder, and CNF as a photo-Fenton catalyst. • Membrane shows 96–98% rejection of dye, 80% rejection of tetracycline and a flux of 50–60 L‧m −2 ‧h −1 ‧bar −1 . • Membrane shows antibacterial property, photo-Fenton induced flux recovery and acid-triggered regeneration. In this study, self-supporting multifunctional photoactive membranes with a sandwich structure were prepared via a green route using eco-friendly materials for water treatment. The Zn-BDC synthesized at 25 °C was employed to construct a strippable skeleton with high flux. Sodium alginate (SA) acted as both a binder and cavity filler to repair defects and enhance tensile properties. Meanwhile, C₃N₄-Fe₂O₃ (CNF) was synthesized and applied as a photo-Fenton catalyst. The results showed that both the membrane with SA on the top (MCS) and the membrane with SA in the middle (MSC) achieved over 98% rejection toward Congo red, Alcian blue, and nickel(II) phthalocyanine-tetrasulfonic acid tetrasodium salt, with a flux ranging from 50 to 70 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 . While the MSC membrane displayed better photocleaning performance and mechanical flexibility than the MCS membrane. Its flux could be restored via the photo-Fenton reaction. Moreover, the MSC membrane also attained over 80% rejection of tetracycline with the assistance of the photo-Fenton reaction. Furthermore, the membrane showed over 95% dye rejection in ethanol and exhibited favorable antibacterial performance. In addition, the membrane could be dissolved in a citric acid solution, which offers a convenient strategy for membrane disposal or recycling. Collectively, this work provides a green and sustainable membrane candidate for water treatment applications. Download: Download high-res image (129KB) Download: Download full-size image
