The development of continuously degradable and recyclable polymeric composites with superb mechanical properties, which can extend the service life of materials and reduce the environmental impact, will make a significant contribution to global sustainability. In this study, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based composites (D-PVA-Fe-TA) with degradability, recyclability and excellent mechanical properties are prepared by complexation of 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde-grafted PVA (D-PVA), tannin (TA) and Fe 3+ ions in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and then dialysis in deionized water and glycerol (Gly). The two-step dialysis process, playing a crucial role in reducing the free water of D-PVA-Fe-TA composites, enhances the formation of reversible of hydrogen-bonding and the reinforcement of self-assembled Fe 3+ -chelation between TA and D-PVA, and facilitates the fabrication of PVA-based composites with a breaking strength of ≈ 18.7 MPa, an elongation at break of ∼ 812 % and a toughness of ≈ 86.81 MJ/m 3 ; Meanwhile, the resulting homogeneous and dense structure of D-PVA-Fe-TA composites hinders the penetration of Gly solution, thereby enhancing the bonding strength and environmental adaptability of D-PVA-TA-Fe composites within the temperature range of −20℃ to 60℃. Furthermore, the as-prepared D-PVA-TA-Fe composites exhibit recyclability for multiple cycles. When placed under soil culture medium, the resulting composites can be degraded without the need for manual interference. This study presents a novel strategy for the fabrication of materials possessing excellent mechanical strength, environmental adaptability, recyclability and degradation, which have great potential for taking the place of conversional composites in specific conditions.

Lignin, as an amorphous three-dimensional aromatic polymer, was able to self-assemble into lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) to realize valorization of lignin. Here, lignin-xylan extractives were extracted from grape seed (GS) and poplar by acidic THF at room temperature, and effectively produced lignin-xylan nanospheres via spin evaporation. The morphology and chemical properties of nanospheres were determined by its natural origins, consequently influencing its application. For the lignin-xylan extractive from grape seed, the lignin was composed of guaiacyl (G) and p -hydroxylphenyl (H) units and the hollowed nanospheres (GS-LNPs) with 362.72 nm diameter was produced. The extractive from poplar was composed of G-syringyl (S) typed lignin (80.30 %) and xylan (12.33 %), that can assemble into LNPs with smaller size (229.87 nm), better PDI (0.1), and light color. The hybrid particles showed the qualities of lignin and xylan, that properties led to the LNPs@PVA composite films with UV-blocking capability, strong mechanical strength and hydrophobicity, and transparency ability of visible light. P-LNPs showed better performance as the film additives, due to its lower particles size and high content of unconjugated -OH from xylan. Xylan was significant in the composite films, and lowering the xylan content resulted in the decrease of the composite film's mechanical properties and hydrophobicity.

Liquid metal (LM) is a promising candidate for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding due to its exceptional electrical conductivity and ease of processing. However, the high surface tension of LM leads to poor compatibility with polymers, significantly hindering its application in EMI shielding. Here, Al 2 O 3 @LM/borax crosslinked PVA (Al 2 O 3 @LM/BCP) aerogel is prepared using mechanical grinding, melting crosslinking, and directional freeze-drying techniques. The core–shell structure of Al 2 O 3 @LM, prepared by mechanical grinding, effectively reduces the high surface tension of LM, enhancing compatibility with the PVA matrix. Due to its freeze-dried porous structure and superior LM conductivity, the Al 2 O 3 @LM/BCP composite aerogel exhibits outstanding electrical conductivity of 312.5 S/m, efficient electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency (EMI SE) of 80.9 dB, and an excellent SEA/SET ratio of 83.9 %. This work offers a straightforward strategy for developing EMI shielding aerogels with excellent mechanical properties for EMI protection applications.

Silicon anode undergoes dramatic volume expansion during charge and discharge, causing structural and interfacial instability that severely degrades battery cycling performance. Herein, we propose a three-dimensional (3D) flexible self-standing SiMP/SWCNT-COOH@PVA/PAA anode, in which carboxylation-modified single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT-COOH) construct a highly conductive and flexible skeleton to provide rapid electron transport channels for micron silicon (SiMP), while polyacrylic acid-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA-PAA) cross-linking layer forms a high-strength polymer interface to strengthen the conductive skeleton and helps to maintain the structural integrity of SiMP. The resulting electrode exhibits ultra-high electrical conductance (12406 S m −1 ) and exceptional mechanical characteristic (tensile strength of 46.95 MPa). More importantly, it demonstrates extremely stable electrochemical properties, with an impressive maximum capacity of approximately 2868.5 mAh g −1 at 0.2C, while retaining an exceptional 96.49 % of capacity even after 100 cycles. A consistent capacity of 1000 mAh g −1 at 1C throughout 1000 cycles is also realized. Furthermore, a flexible full battery based on SiMP/SWCNT-COOH@PVA/PAA anode achieves a discharge capacity of 49.5 mAh g −1 following 100 cycles, and illuminates a LED strip normally under various bending conditions. These results are expected to open a new way towards enhanced performance silicon-based electrodes within flexible LIBs.

Amine-responsive fluorescent indicator films for meat freshness were constructed by incorporating β-glucan grafted with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The structural, thermal, and responsive properties of grafted copolymers (βGlu-FITC) were investigated. The results of 1 H NMR spectra showed that βGlu-FITC exhibited proton signals between 6.5 and 6.7 ppm, suggesting the successful grafting of FITC onto β-glucan. The fluorescence quantum yield of βGlu-FITC was 18.72%, which was higher than that of β-glucan of 12.94% at the optimum excitation wavelength of ultraviolet light of 365 nm. With the incorporation of PVA as a film-forming matrix, βGlu-FITC/PVA films showed high yellow-green fluorescent responsiveness under volatile ammonia and pH solution. When the film was used for meat freshness, the 0.06βGlu-FITC/PVA film provided a noticeable fluorescent indication of pork freshness that corresponded to increases in total volatile basic nitrogen, total colony counts, and drip loss, suggesting its potential for meat packaging and as a freshness indicator.

Anion exchange membranes were prepared by a simple method on the basis of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and 1,4-Piperazinedicarboxaldehyde (PDC). A network structure was formed in the membranes by cross-linking between PVA and PDC. The mechanical stability and acid stability the prepared membranes was tested. The TS value was tested as 17.5–37.8 MPa, E b was 120.4–54.7% and the mass retention in the acid environment was 98.4–97.2%. Meanwhile, the physicochemical properties of membranes, such as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), water absorption (W R ), ion exchange capacity (IEC) and linear expansion rate (LER). W R was 106.9–136.7%, IEC was 1.03–1.55 mmol/g, and LER was 37.93–33.33%. In practical application, diffusion dialysis (DD) performance of membranes were tested. In DD test, the acid dialysis coefficient (U H + ) was 17.5–27.9 × 10 −3 m/h, and the separation factor (S) was 31.25–23.38. The U H + and S were all higher than commercial membrane DF-120 (U H + is 9 × 10 −3 m/h and S is 18.00). Results were shown that the comprehensive properties of membranes were good. Therefore, the prepared membranes had broad application prospects for acid recovery by diffusion dialysis.

Due to electronic product miniaturization and acceleration, electromagnetic radiation and thermal accumulation issues are prominent, posing risks to nearby devices and individuals. Developing thin polymer films to block electromagnetic radiation and prevent fires is crucial for smaller, faster electronics. In this study, we successfully fabricated a unique self-supporting ultra-thin sandwich-structured film named ANFs-PVA/AgNWs (APAg), which exhibited exceptional performance in both electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and flame retardancy. The introduction of inner AgNWs layer resulted in significant EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) at X-band frequencies, achieving an impressive 47.01 dB with a loading of only 0.10 mg/cm 2 , effectively blocking 99.99 % of electromagnetic waves (EMWs). The ANFs-PVA layers were adopted as the flexible outer layer, endowing the films with excellent flame retardance and good mechanical support due to the high heat resistance of aramid nanofibers (ANFs) as well as the strong hydrogen bonding interaction between ANFs and PVA. The film demonstrated self-extinguishing behavior in vertical burning tests, achieving a flame-retardant rating of V-0. Furthermore, the sandwich structure provides high durability for the EMI shielding performance of the films under different conditions. This study presents a novel approach for fabricating high-performance polymer-based EMI shielding films that hold great potential for applications in electronics and communication technologies.

MXene fibers with electro-conductivity and electrochemical properties have drawn growing research interest for its promising applications in wearable electronics, flexible electrodes, and smart textiles. However, producing MXene fibers with high strength keeps challenging because loose MXene sheets are hard to compact tightly due to electrostatic repulsion. Herein, ultra-compact MXene-based fibers are produced by intercalating alginate and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) layers into MXene nanosheets and chelating via metal ions (i.e., Ca 2+ ). The hydrogen and ionic bond are beneficial to compact MXene nanosheets and decrease the interplanar spacing, which improves the tensile strength. These result in MXene-based fibers with low porosity (0.2 vol%) and a high orientation factor of 0.877 exhibiting high electrical conductivity (1006 S cm ‒1 ). In addition, flame retardancy is enhanced without smoldering owing to the synergistic effect of MXene and metal ions. Moreover, these compact MXene-based fibers with electromagnetic interference shielding, mechanical stability, acid, and alkali-resistant properties, and photo-thermal effect can be achieved for scale production. This strategy paves the way for the continuous production of compact functional fibers, applicable in flame retardant fabric, wireless communication, energy harvesting, and wearable flexible textiles.

Modern agriculture is troubled by white pollution caused by nondegradable polyethylene (PE) mulch film and high transportation costs caused by the large amount of water in liquid mulch film. Aiming at these problems, this study developed a new degradable and water-free powder mulch film (SUPM) with straw powders, urea, and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as raw materials. The wind erosion resistance and film-forming properties of SUP powders as SUPM’s precursor were investigated as well as the influence of PVA and urea content on the mechanical properties and water resistance of SUPM film. The results showed that PVA in SUPM film was in a gradient distribution conducive to the germination of crop seedlings. Here, PVA colloids were more distributed at the interface between film and air than at the interface between film and soil. The optimized SUPM film exhibited a biodegradation rate of 90.5 % over 100 d. After SUPM film degradation, soil carbon and nitrogen contents were 33.5 and 58.8 % higher, respectively, than in bare soil. In two consecutive planting experiments, pakchoi yields were higher and more stable in the soil with SUPM than in bare soil and soil with PE. Compared to other reported biodegradable mulch films, SUPM demonstrated advantages in ease of use, enhancement of soil carbon and nitrogen content, and stable crop yields. This study provided a new approach for the large-scale utilization of straw waste, mitigating environmental issues caused by traditional PE mulch, and promoting the development of environment-friendly modern agriculture.

A method of sequential spraying of polyvinyl alcohol with carbon quantum dots (PVA@CDs) aqueous suspension and SiO2aqueous suspension is proposed to rapidly prepare multicolor dual-mode anti-counterfeiting labels. With the optimization of the concentration (15%) of colloidal microspheres in the SiO2aqueous suspension as well as the spraying process parameters (spray distance of 10 cm, spray duration of 3 s, and assembly temperature of 20 °C), different-sized SiO2microspheres (168 nm, 228 nm, and 263 nm) were utilized to rapidly assemble red, green, and blue photonic crystals. Furthermore, the tunable fluorescence emission of carbon quantum dots endows the labels with yellow, green, and blue fluorescence. The constructed dual-mode labeling was used to develop an anti-counterfeiting code with dual-channel information storage capabilities and also to create dual-mode multicolor anti-counterfeiting labels on various packaging substrates. This work provides a novel solution for anti-counterfeiting packaging and information storage.

This study aims to explore the redispersibility of dehydrated nanocellulose with p -toluenesulfonic acid ( p -TsOH) fractionated lignin as an eco-friendly and cost-effective capping agent, to cope with the challenge of irreversible agglomeration and thus loss of nanoscale of nanocellulose upon dehydration. The intermixing of nanocellulose and p -TsOH fractionated lignin was achieved using an aqueous ethanol solution as the medium and films of lignin-blending cellulose nanofibers (L + CNF) with excellent redispersing properties were obtained after facile air-drying. With 0.02 % ammonia as the dispersing solution, the dehydrated L + CNF film was able to achieve nearly 100 % redispersion yield after 30 min of mechanical agitation. If necessary, lignin in redispersed L + CNF can be removed by simple ethanol washing and centrifugation. In addition, redispersed L + CNF can be hybridized with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) in a simple process to prepare PVA nanocomposite films with excellent hydrophobic, thermally stable, antibacterial, and mechanical properties. This study provided a sustainable and cost-effective solution to the dehydration/redispersion challenges of nanocellulose.

The codelivery of multiple bioactive phytochemicals via nano/microparticles (NPs/MPs) represents a promising strategy for enhancing therapeutic efficacy. This study presents the development of novel poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-stabilized hybrid particles designed for codelivery of palmatine hydrochloride (PAL) and glycyrrhizic acid (GL). Employing a straightforward coassembly method, we synthesized dual-drug particles achieving a high payload capacity of over 70%. The particles were characterized as uniform in size, within the nano/micron range, and exhibited a ζ-potential of −5.0 mV. The incorporation of PVA not only stabilized the particles but also refined the aggregation process, resulting in more uniform and finer particles approximately 1 μm in size. Spectral analysis and molecular dynamics simulations verified the presence of π–π stacking and hydrogen bonding between PAL and GL within the particles. In vitro antibacterial assays indicated that the hybrid particles had a lower minimum inhibitory concentration against Escherichia coli and Multidrug-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus than those of the pure drugs. In vivo biodistribution study in rats revealed that the PVA-stabilized particles revealed enhanced targeting to the liver, lung, and heart, demonstrating improved tissue selectivity compared with the solution group. In summary, the PVA-stabilized hybrid NPs/MPs represent an innovative and efficient platform for codelivery of multidrugs. These findings highlight the promise of coassembled particles for high loading, enhanced bioactivity, and targeted delivery, making them a strong candidate for future clinical applications.
