Enhanced hydrophilicity and antibacterial activity of PVDF ultrafiltration membrane using Ag3PO4/TiO2 nanocomposite against E. coli

Xiaoting Hong,Yumei Zhou,Zhuoliang Ye,Haifeng Zhuang,Wanpeng Liu,K.S. Hui,Zhi Zeng,Xianhuan Qiu

Ag 3 PO 4 /TiO 2 nanocomposite was fabricated by an in situ precipitation method and then blended into poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) casting solution to prepare the ultrafiltration membrane via wet phase inversion technique. The water flux and bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection rate of membrane were investigated; meanwhile, the ultrafiltration membrane morphologies and structural properties were analyzed using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction. Compared with the control membrane, the permeate performance of blended membranes was improved while possessing a steady BSA retention due to enhanced hydrophilicity. Mechanical tests revealed that the modified membranes exhibited a larger tensile strength and breakage elongation. SEM images and the halo zone testing were employed to assess the antibacterial performances of the nanocomposite membranes against Escherichia coli. The antibacterial tests confirmed that the modified membranes showed an effective antibacterial property against E. coli.

High Lithium Salt Content PVDF-Based Solid-State Composite Polymer Electrolyte Enhanced by h-BN Nanosheets

Yuanjun Zhao,Yanyang Qin,Xinyu Da,Xianjun Weng,Yiyang Gao,Guoxin Gao,Yaqiong Su,Shujiang Ding

Due to the unique safety qualities, solid composite polymer electrolyte (SCPE) has achieved considerable attentions to fabricate high-energy-density lithium metal batteries, but its overall performance still has to be improved. Herein, a high lithium salt content poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based SCPE was developed, enhanced by hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets, presenting perfect electrochemical performance, fast ion transport, and efficient inhibition of lithium dendrite growth. The optimized SCPE (PVDF-L70-B5) could deliver high ionic conductivity (2.98×10 −4 S cm −1 ), ultra-high Li + ion transfer number (0.62), wide electrochemical stability window (5.24 V), and strong mechanical strength (3.45 MPa) at room temperature. Density functional theory calculation further confirmed that the presence of h-BN could promote the dissociation of bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide lithium (LiTFSI) and the rapid transfer of Li + ions. As a result, the assembled symmetric Li/Li battery and asymmetric Li/LiFePO 4 battery using PVDF-L70-B5 SCPEs both exhibited high reversible capacity, long-term cycle stability, and high-rate performance when cycled at 60 or 30 °C. The designed SCPEs will open up a new route to synthesize solid-state lithium batteries with high energy density and high safety. Graphical Polymer electrolyte : High lithium salt content poly(vinylidene fluoride)-based solid composite polymer electrolyte enhanced by hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets is prepared, which presents perfect electrochemical performance, fast ion transport, and efficient inhibition of lithium dendrite growth.

Y3+/Zn2+ Codoped LATP/PVDF-HFP Coating Enables Bulk–Interface Regulation for Stable Lithium Metal Batteries

Qiyuan Zhu,Yuhang Yang,Jiling Song,Jiqiang Wu,Jianbing Guo

Developing functional separators capable of simultaneously suppressing lithium dendrite growth and enabling compatibility with high-voltage cathodes is critical for realizing long-cycle-life lithium metal batteries. Herein, a synergistic bulk–interface regulation strategy is achieved via a coatable Y3+/Zn2+ codoped LATP/PVDF-HFP composite coating applied onto a commercial polypropylene (PP) separator. Y3+/Zn2+ codoped Li1.3Al0.275Y0.025Ti1.7(PO4)3 (LAYTP-Zn) is synthesized via a solid-state route and uniformly integrated with PVDF-HFP to form a conformal coating with strong interfacial adhesion. Y3+/Zn2+ incorporation induces lattice expansion of LATP, thereby broadening bulk Li+ transport pathways. In addition, Zn2+ regulates interfacial chemistry by enhancing electrolyte dissociation and anchoring anions through Lewis acid interactions, while also promoting the formation of polar β-phase PVDF-HFP, collectively increasing the Li+ transference number to 0.79. In addition, the polymer matrix serves as a physical barrier that mitigates direct interfacial side reactions. The coordinated regulation of bulk ion conduction and interfacial ion distribution enables a more uniform Li+ flux and facilitates the formation of a LiF-enriched and mechanically robust interphase, thereby suppressing dendrite nucleation and growth. As a result, Li||Li symmetric cells exhibit stable cycling for over 3000 h at 1 mA·cm–2 and 1 mAh·cm–2. Furthermore, Li||LFP and Li||NCM811 half-cells deliver capacity retentions of 91.2% after 800 cycles at 1 C and 95.1% after 200 cycles at 0.5 C, respectively, while maintaining stable operation up to 4.73 V. This work provides a scalable separator design that integrates bulk transport optimization with interfacial regulation, offering a practical pathway toward high-performance lithium metal batteries.

Flow-directed alignment enabling self-polarization and superior anti-fouling in PVDF piezoelectric hollow fiber membranes

Qiang Shi,Meiyan Liu,Qingxiang Meng,Xiufang Sun,Wanjun Liu,Jiankui Sun,Yang Zhang

Conventional high-voltage poling hinders the scalable production of piezoelectric hollow-fiber membranes (Pi-HFMs) due to its incompatibility with continuous wet-spinning. Here, a shear-flow-templating strategy is reported that enables one-step self-poling of PVDF hollow fiber membranes via alignment of platelet-like BaTiO 3 fillers during dry-jet wet-spinning. The aligned fillers not only elevate the electroactive β-phase content to 92.45%, but also template macroscopic dipole orientation, yielding an open-circuit voltage of 16 V without any external poling—comparable to conventionally poled membranes. The self-poled membranes exhibit superior antifouling performance against charged organics, organic-inorganic composites, and multi-component mixtures. Using particles with contrasting dielectric constants (SiO 2 , ε ~ 3.9 vs. BaTiO 3 , ε ~ 1000), the antifouling mechanism maybe originates from the negative dielectrophoretic (nDEP) effect. This work provides a scalable fabrication route for self-poled piezoelectric hollow fiber membranes and demonstrates a physical antifouling mechanism based on intrinsic dielectric properties, offering a robust and energy-efficient approach for membrane fouling control in water treatment.

Fabrication of High-Stability PVDF Solid-State Electrolytes via Molecular Weight Tailoring and Zinc Complex Modification

Li Liu,Shaodong Bai,Chang Li,Jianjiang Mao,Xiangwei Meng,Fei Cheng

As promising next-generation energy storage candidates with high safety and energy density, solid-state lithium metal batteries are constrained by the twin critical issues of low ionic conductivity and poor interfacial contact. Herein, a composite polymer electrolyte (PPM) is fabricated via polymer molecular chain modulation coupled with zinc complex modification, where a mixed polymer chain (M-PVDF) is derived from two molecular-weight-distinct PVDF grades (Kynar 761/Solvay 5130, 1:1 mass ratio), and an oxygen-rich amorphous zinc complex (MO) acts as a multifunctional filler. Specifically, the M-PVDF matrix constructs a continuous electrolyte surface that enables unobstructed ion transport and reinforces electrolyte-electrode interfacial contact, thereby enhancing long-term cycling stability. Meanwhile, the MO filler exerts synergistic effects through three key functions: its abundant carbonyl groups accelerate Li-salt dissociation to boost ionic conductivity; its NMP ligands act as “solvent immobilizers” to create extra ion migration sites; and its metal active centers modulate charge distribution for uniform Li deposition and dendrite suppression. Benefiting from this rational structural design, the PPM electrolyte delivers exceptional electrochemical properties, including a 5.2 V voltage window, an ionic conductivity of 4.29 × 10–4 S cm–1 and a high lithium-ion transference number of 0.65. Assembled into an LFP battery, it retains 93% of the initial capacity after 360 cycles at 0.2 C, demonstrating superior cycling stability. Moreover, the pouch cell exhibits excellent bending resistance and damage tolerance, highlighting great potential for flexible and wearable battery applications.

Asymmetric filler engineering of PVDF nanocomposites for high-energy-storage density via synergistic MXene/Al2O3 hybrids

Xiaohang Yu,Zhaotian Ba,Yu Long,Meng Xin,Guohua Fan,Chuncheng Hao

Traditional polymer-based dielectric energy storage materials are typically limited by the compromise between low dielectric permittivity and inadequate breakdown strength. This trade-off represents a major bottleneck that severely restricts the enhancement of energy storage performance. In this work, we introduced a ternary composite design that synergistically integrates two-dimensional MXene nanosheets and insulating Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles into a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrix. In this structure, the MXene component induces strong interfacial polarization, significantly enhancing the effective dielectric constant, while the Al 2 O 3 filler acts as a nanoscale barrier, inhibiting charge injection and leakage conduction, thereby maintaining high breakdown strength. With a low filler loading of 0.2 wt%, the film demonstrated a dielectric permittivity of 18.15 and a dielectric loss of 0.028. Moreover, the breakdown strength attained 124% of that measured for pure PVDF, and the maximum discharge energy density increased to 4.76 J/cm 3 . This design provides a novel route for energy storage utilizing advanced dielectric materials. Download: Download high-res image (238KB) Download: Download full-size image

SDS Induces the Cross-Linking of PEI Molecules by Electrostatic Attraction to Prepare PVDF Ultrafiltration Membrane

Weiyi Kong,Min Li,Dingguang Wu,Kaizhou Zhang,Jinbo Jin

In this study, PVDF/SMA membranes were fabricated via non-solvent induced phase separation(NIPS), followed by grafting of polyethyleneimine (PEI) onto the membrane surface through reaction with the anhydride groups of SMA, yielding PVDF/SMA-PEI membranes. Owing to the considerable free volume of PEI chains, stacking tends to occur during cross-linking with SMA, resulting in a loose selective layer and poor retention of small- to medium-sized dye molecules. To address this, the small-molecule additive sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was introduced into the PEI solution. The electrostatic interaction between the sulfate ions of SDS and PEI promotes a more uniform distribution of PEI on the membrane surface, reducing inter-chain aggregation and forming a denser selective layer. The resulting PEI-SDS membrane maintained a high pure-water flux of 220 L/m 2 ·h while achieving methyl blue, indigo carmine, and acid fuchsin rejection rates of 98.86%, 99.57%, and 86.77%, respectively. In conclusion, this work provides a simple method for preparing highly efficient positively charged membranes for dye removal.

Janus membrane with fluorinated graphene oxide embedded PVDF-HP hydrophobic layer for efficient oil/water separation

Yiqiao Xie,Hanyun Zhou,Yang Yu

The efficient and low-cost treatment of oily wastewaters has become a concerned issue for mitigating the environmental pollution and reducing resource wastage. In this study, a novel Janus membrane was fabricated by electrospinning a thin hydrophobic layer of fluorinated graphene oxide (FGO) nanosheet-incorporated poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) nanofibers on the surface of a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) hydrophilic layer. The hydrophobic layer was controlled to be 15 times thinner than that of the hydrophilic layer by regulating the electrospinning time. The incorporation of FGO nanosheets into PVDF-HFP nanofibers induced the formation of numerous microspheres and finer nanofibers on the hydrophobic layer, thereby endowing the membrane with a high surface roughness with a “beads-on-strings” morphology. The PVDF-HFP/FGO hydrophobic layer exhibited a water contact angle of 136.8°, which contributed to a high oil flux of ~17500 L/m2.h and separation efficiency of 95.3% for the heavy oil/water mixture. In contrast, the membrane achieved a water flux of ~5800 L/m2.h and separation efficiency of 99.1% for the light oil/water mixture. The membrane could maintain stable performance over seven consecutive separation cycles and within the temperature range of 20–120°C. The prepared membrane could be considered as a promising alternative for the practical treatment of oily wastewaters.

Achieving high temperature energy storage performance in PVDF through synergizing cross-linking and BNNs doping strategies

Qiuying Zhao,Jiachen Shi,Lu Yang,Ming Zhang,Hongli Ji,Jinhao Qiu

The growing demand for electrostatic capacitors in extreme conditions highlights the urgent need for polymer dielectric films with high breakdown strength ( E b ), high discharge energy density ( U e ), and outstanding high-temperature stability. Herein, a high-temperature stable capacitive composite film based on poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-CTFE)) is proposed by synergizing cross-linking and doping strategies. Specifically, P(VDF-CTFE) is engineered to form a cross-linking network and subsequently doped with surface-modified BNNs (BNNs-OH). By harnessing the synergistic effect between cross-linking and BNNs-OH doping, one can effectively restrict molecular mobility, disrupt the growth of crystalline domains, and inhibit the propagation of electrical trees and defects. This dual modification not only enhances the structural integrity of the polymer matrix but also improves its breakdown strength, high-temperature stability, and energy storage capabilities. The resultant composite film delivers a high discharge energy density up to 14.1 Jcm −3 at 25 °C and 13.59 Jcm −3 at 150 °C, validating its distinguished temperature stability over a wide temperature range. This study presents a facile strategy to develop advanced polymer dielectric films for harsh operating environments where both performance and durability are crucial.

Asymmetric bilayer PVDF-SN composite electrolytes with improved interfacial stability for high-performance lithium metal batteries

Shiyu Cao,Zhenyu Fu,Bokang Liu,Yawen Wu,Qiang Shen,Fei Chen

Succinonitrile (SN)-based plastic crystal electrolytes (PCEs) show great potential for solid-state batteries, but their practical application is limited by poor interfacial stability with lithium metal anodes. To address this critical challenge, an asymmetric bilayer composite electrolyte was designed, which consists of a porous PVDF-SN-LiTFSI-LiDFOB (PSTD) catholyte ensuring fast Li + transport, and a dense PVDF-LLZO-LiTFSI (PLT) anolyte serving as a robust protective layer. Notably, the PLT anolyte acts not only as a physical barrier against Li dendrites but also as a chemical buffer that facilitates the in-situ formation of a robust, tailored SEI from migrant additives, synergistically suppressing harmful side reactions. The resulting bilayer electrolyte exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 3.1 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at 30 °C and a wide electrochemical window of 4.85 V. As a result, the LFP/Li cells demonstrate excellent long-term cycling stability, delivering a high discharge capacity of 144.8 mAh g −1 and a retention rate of 95.9 % after 500 cycles at 1 C and 30 °C.

Enhanced Energy Storage Performance Achieved in Multilayered PVDF–PMMA Nanocomposites Incorporated with High-Entropy Oxide Nanofibers

Lu Jing,Weili Li,Chang Gao,Menglu Li,Weidong Fei

Large depletion of fossil fuels promotes the sustainable development of renewable energy. Polymer-based dielectric nanocomposites are widely utilized owing to their ultrafast charging–discharging rate and high power density in pulse power systems, smart grids, and other electrical devices. In this paper, completely new high-entropy oxide (Eu0.2Bi0.2Y0.2La0.2Cr0.2)2O3 (in short, E) nanofibers are fabricated, and the multilayered nanocomposites are prepared with electrospinning and layer-by-layer hot-pressing processes. A high energy density of 20.11 J cm–3 and an efficiency of 64% are achieved at 598.9 kV mm–1 in the trilayered nanocomposites. First, the enhanced entropy of the lattices leads to local polymorphic distortion, which, to a certain extent, limits the movements of long polymer chains, reduces the dielectric loss, and improves the breakdown strength of the nanocomposites. Moreover, for multilayered nanocomposites, the Schottky barrier forms with the direct contact between the electrodes and ferroelectric polymer. The difference in permittivity of the materials in contact with the electrodes leads to the difference in the barrier height around the interfaces, which results in a larger local electric field and a higher breakdown strength. Besides, the multilayered nanocomposites improve the rough interfaces between inorganics and organics and reduce the probability of dielectric breakdown. This work provides a new filling strategy and structural-layer design for the application of flexible dielectric materials.

Preparation of antifouling zwitterion PVDF-imprinted composite membranes for selective antibiotic and oil/water emulsion separation

Jiuyun Cui,Yibo Zhang,Yusong Pan,Jianjun Li,Atian Xie,Changguo Xue,Jianming Pan

Molecularly imprinted composite membranes are considered to be a promising technology for the selective separation of antibiotics in wastewater. However, membrane pollution still greatly limits the practical applications of these membranes, especially in oily wastewater. In this study, an anti-fouling zwitterion PVDF-imprinted composite membrane (SPICM) was synthesized using dopamine as the functional monomer and crosslinking agent in the imprinting process. First, sulfobetaine 8 was blended with a porous PVDF membrane via a surface segregation strategy. Next, dopamine self-polymerization provided effective recognition sites and endowed the membrane surface with high hydrophilicity . The SPICM used for emulsion separation and selective tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) in wastewater. The as-prepared SPICM was able to separate various emulsions under gravity with a high flux (626 L m −2  h −1 ) and separation efficiencies of up to 99%. This membrane achieved a TC separation efficiency of 88.3% in oily wastewater. Therefore, the design of SPICMs with good antifouling performance provides a new strategy for the highly selective separation of active components from oily wastewater.
