The detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particularly acetone, is critical for applications in environmental monitoring and medical diagnostics, including diabetes detection. Conventional metal oxide semiconductor sensors face challenges such as poor selectivity, high operating temperatures, and limited stability. This study addresses these limitations by developing Pt-doped ZnO nanotubes (Pt–ZnO NTs) using a coaxial electrospinning and in-situ growth method. The process effectively incorporates ZIF-8-derived hollow ZnO structures and uniformly distributed Pt nanoparticles to enhance gas sensing performance. Key findings reveal that the 1% Pt–ZnO NTs sensor exhibits exceptional acetone sensitivity (Ra/Rg = 48.2 for 10 ppm), broad detection range (81.2 ppb–50 ppm), reduced operating temperature (240 °C), and robust selectivity against interfering gases. Advanced characterization and theoretical density functional theory analysis show that Pt doping increases oxygen vacancy concentration, enhances electron transport, and reduces the material's band gap, contributing to superior sensing capabilities. Additionally, the sensor demonstrates excellent stability, repeatability, and practical applicability in distinguishing diabetic and healthy exhaled breath samples. This research introduces a novel gas sensing platform that integrates metal–organic framework-derived structures and noble metal catalysts, offering significant advancements in sensitivity, selectivity, and reliability for VOC detection.

Diabetic patients frequently suffer from skin ulcers exacerbated by bacterial infections. Cu 2 O nanozymes present a promising antibacterial alternative to antibiotics due to their enzyme-like catalytic activity. However, their efficacy is hindered by the low H 2 O 2 concentration in the bacterial microenvironment and the slow electron transfer during catalysis. To mitigate these limitations, we exploited Cu 2 O's intrinsic reducing ability to grow Au–Pt nanoparticles, thereby creating Cu 2 O@Au–Pt nanoreactors. Subsequently, we fabricated Cu 2 O@Au–Pt/Polycaprolactone skin scaffolds using laser powder bed fusion. In the scaffold, Cu 2 O catalyzed H 2 O 2 to produce hydroxyl radicals, inducing bacterial apoptosis. Au–Pt nanoparticles enhanced this catalysis in three manners: by providing additional H 2 O 2 through glucose oxidation, elevating the reaction temperature via plasmonic resonance, and facilitating electron transfer through metal-support interactions. Photothermal experiments and simulations illuminated the near-field coupling and interface hotspot formation mechanisms in the Cu 2 O@Au–Pt hybrid structure, boosting the catalytic rate at the interface. DFT calculations and electrochemical tests verified a reduced energy barrier for electron transfer in the Cu 2 O@Au–Pt system, enhancing its redox capability. Upon NIR irradiation, the scaffold increased intracellular ROS by 84.5 % and achieved a 99.9 % antibacterial efficacy against E. coli. These findings highlight the potential of the Cu 2 O@Au–Pt nanozyme scaffold for treating diabetic wounds.

Insight into the relationship between catalytic trends and physicochemical properties of composite nanoparticles is essential for their rational design. Herein, a series of 3d-M (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) metal hydroxide-promoted PtM(OH)x/Al2O3 catalysts are developed and well characterized for establishing the catalytic HCHO oxidation reactivity trend as a function of more fundamental properties, such as hydroxyl concentration and adsorption strength. The reactivity of PtM(OH)x/Al2O3 exhibits an increasing trend of Mn < Fe < Co < Ni, which is governed by their OH–M2+δ bond strength (Ni < Co < Fe < Mn) and surface hydroxyl concentration (Mn < Fe < Co < Ni). Both PtCo(OH)x/Al2O3 and PtNi(OH)x/Al2O3 exhibit a (>)95% HCHO conversion and (>)100 h performance stability at 30 °C with a low 0.2 wt % Pt loading amount. The identification of these catalytic trends provides foundations for composite active sites design for HCHO oxidation and other hydroxyl-involved reactions.

Engineering robust electrocatalysts is always a key point in direct alcohol fuel cells. Catalysts with a one-dimension (1D) structure are well studied and considered as promising candidates among various catalysts in the past decades; however, the precise regulation on the surface structure of 1D nanomaterials is still a worthy subject. By creatively introducing a trimetallic nanoalloy, core@multishell structure, and 1D nanowire (NW) morphology, we have constructed a kind of novel spiny PtFePd@PtFe/Pt core@multishell 1D NW catalysts with PtFePd as the core and PtFe/Pt as the multishell on the basis of improving catalytic property. The composition-optimized Pt5FePd2 1D NWs display remarkable catalytic properties for ethanol oxidation reaction and methanol oxidation reaction, in which mass activities are 4.965 and 4.038 A mg–1, 4.6 and 5.0 and 4.0 and 9.2-fold higher than Pt/C and Pd/C catalysts. Furthermore, the obtained Pt5FePd2 NWs can also retain favorable stability after durability tests. The unique core@multishell structure, spiny 1D NWs with many steps and kinks, and interior electronic and synergistic effect all contribute to the advanced catalytic performance. The present work has rationally designed the novel 1D PtFePd@PtFe/Pt core@multishell NW catalysts and offered a meaningful guideline for the designing of high-performance electrocatalysts.

Ensuring efficient noble metal utilization while maintaining rapid electron transport and long-term durability remains a central challenge in the acidic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, we report a platinum catalyst supported on Magneli phase Ti4O7, a conductive oxide obtained via the hydrogen reduction of TiO2(B), in which the support plays an active electronic role rather than serving as an inert scaffold. Electrochemical and spectroscopic analyses reveal that the mixed Ti3+/Ti4+ valence states and high electrical conductivity of Ti4O7 enable strong electronic coupling with Pt, leading to reduced charge-transfer resistance and more favorable hydrogen adsorption kinetics. As a result, the optimized 3 wt % Pt/Ti4O7 catalyst achieves an overpotential of 13 mV at 10 mA cm–2 with sustained activity over 100 h in 0.5 M H2SO4. These findings demonstrate that conductive oxide supports can actively regulate interfacial electron transfer and reaction kinetics, offering a viable strategy for low noble metal loading and high-performance HER catalysts.

The selective hydrogenation of α, β-unsaturated aldehydes to unsaturated alcohols is of great industrial significance, yet the development of highly active and stable catalysts remains a substantial challenge. This study employs hydrothermal and sodium borohydride reduction methods to synthesize high-performance PtCo/La 2 O 2 CO 3 catalysts for cinnamaldehyde selective hydrogenation. The electronic interaction between Pt and Co (electrons transferring from Pt to Co) can be precisely tailored by adjusting Pt and Co contents, which effectively modulates activation behavior of H 2 on the catalyst surface. This electronic modulation leads to distinguished catalytic activity, with PtCo/La 2 O 2 CO 3 -3 (Pt-1.75 wt%, Co-0.45 wt%) exhibiting the weakest Pt-Co interaction and thus achieving the excellent catalytic performance (cinnamaldehyde conversion-97.7%, cinnamyl alcohol selectivity-90.7%) under mild conditions (60 °C, 1.5 h, 2.0 MPa H 2 ). This study elucidates the synergistic mechanisms in PtCo bimetallic catalysts and establishes a versatile strategy for designing efficient multifunctional catalytic systems through the integration of bimetallic synergy.

Ammonia is emerging as a promising carbon-free energy carrier. The electrocatalytic ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR), highly structure-sensitive, exhibits exceptional activity on Pt nanocubes (NCs) with (100) facets. Yet, synthesis methods employing metal carbonyl capping agents inevitably introduce residual metals, whose catalytic effects are often neglected. Here, Pt NCs synthesized with Mo(CO) 6 were found to contain trace Mo both in the bulk and at the surface. Surface Mo species, partially oxidized to MoO x , substantially modify the electronic structure of Pt(100), lowering activation barriers for rate-determining AOR steps and enhancing resistance to nitrogen poisoning. These effects collectively boost AOR performance, enabling a direct ammonia fuel cell with a Pt-154 anode to achieve a peak power density of 26.7 mW cm −2 . These results reveal the overlooked impact of capping-agent-derived contaminants in AOR and point to the deliberate incorporation of heterometallic modifiers as a viable strategy for advanced electrocatalyst design.

Ultrafine Pt nanoparticles loaded on ceria (CeO 2 ) are promising nanostructured catalysts for many important reactions. However, such catalysts often suffer from thermal instability due to coarsening of Pt nanoparticles at elevated temperatures, especially for those with high Pt loading, which leads to severe deterioration of catalytic performances. Here, a facile strategy is developed to improve the thermal stability of ultrafine (1–2 nm)-Pt/CeO 2 catalysts with high Pt content (≈14 wt%) by partially embedding Pt nanoparticles at the surface of CeO 2 through the redox reaction at the solid–solution interface. Ex situ heating studies demonstrate the significant increase in thermal stability of such embedded nanostructures compared to the conventional loaded catalysts. The microscopic pathways for interparticle coarsening of Pt embedded or loaded on CeO 2 are further investigated by in situ electron microscopy at elevated temperatures. Their morphology and size evolution with heating temperature indicate that migration and coalescence of Pt nanoparticles are remarkably suppressed in the embedded structure up to about 450 °C, which may account for the improved thermal stability compared to the conventional loaded structure.

Combination of immune- and chemo-therapy has become a new trend in cancer treatment. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved immune-modulatory agent, thalidomide , can modulate the related proteins of upstream signaling pathway of programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1), including nuclear transcription factor κ B (NF- κ B), hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), all acting as key antitumor target proteins. In this work, we conjugated thalidomide with oxidized cisplatin to construct multi-functional Pt(IV) prodrugs , named thaliplatins 4 – 6 , to investigate the anti-tumor effect of immuno- and chemo-therapy. Among them, thaliplatin 6 exerted remarkable cytotoxicity against the tested cancer cell lines, showing 15–26 and 9–20 times higher IC 50 values than those of single cisplatin or the combination of cisplatin + thalidomide, respectively. Moreover, thaliplatin 6 could rapidly accumulated into cells, markedly triggered DNA damage, and induced cell S phase arrest and apoptosis, as well as inhibited cell migration and invasion in breast carcinoma cell line (MCF-7). Fluorescent confocal and western blotting experiments proved that 6 significantly regulated NF- κ B, EGFR, HIF-1 α and phosphor-signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 ( p -STAT3), and simultaneously inhibited PD-L1 expression to interrupt programmed cell death 1 (PD-1)/PD-L1 signaling pathway, suggesting a synergistic action of cisplatin and thalidomide. Most strikingly, in vivo tests indicated that 6 effectively decreased tumor growth with no observable systemic toxicity, being superior to the anticancer efficacy of cisplatin.

Intra-particle hydrogen (H) spillover is widely exploited in supported metal catalysts to boost hydrogenation performance, yet interfacial hydrogen spillover between particles remains less explored in liquid-phase hydrogenation. In this study, we demonstrate the activity enhancement achieved by rational regulation of intra/inter-particle H spillover of Pt/TiO 2 using 5-nitrobenzothiazole (NBZ) hydrogenation as a model reaction. By regulating intraparticle hydrogen spillover, we achieved a 17-fold increase in the reaction rate of Pt/TiO 2 with ppm-level Pt. Further leveraging interparticle hydrogen spillover between Pt/TiO 2 and Fe-TiO 2 enhanced the activity by an additional 2.3-fold, resulting in a conversion rate of 5232 h⁻ 1 . Detailed characterizations revealed that the balanced density of Ti 3+ and Pt exposure degree, and enhanced electron transfer properties significantly amplify interparticle H spillover capability. The generality of this strategy is confirmed by extending interparticle H spillover–promoted nitro group hydrogenation to CeO 2 , another prototypical reducible metal oxide. This work demonstrates that carefully tuning intra/inter-particle H spillover can unlock exceptional performance in the hydrogenation of strongly coordinating substrates having N or S atom that can be strongly adsorbed on the Pt surface.

Long-term exposure to formaldehyde (HCHO) in indoor environment poses a serious threat to human health. Despite recent advances, conventional electrochemical HCHO sensors face significant challenges in sensitivity, selectivity, and stability, primarily due to competitive adsorption of interfering species and strong binding of reaction intermediates on the catalyst surface. To address these limitations, we developed an ammonia-assisted bimetallic synergistic templating method to construct a Pt–Co bimetallic and nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube (Pt2.32Co–N10/CNT) electrocatalyst. Compared to commercial Pt/C, the Pt2.32Co–N10/CNT exhibits a 2.73-fold higher catalytic activity, a sensitivity of 458.62 μA·mmol/(L·cm2) (4.12 times that of Pt/C), and anti-interference performance. The CNT provides a one-dimensional and high-surface-area structure that accelerates electron transfer and promotes uniform dispersion of active sites, including Pt/Co nanoparticles and Pt/Co single atoms. Importantly, the nitrogen-rich environment forms strong coordinate bonds with Pt and Co, finely-modulating their electronic configurations to suppress methanol interference via selective adsorption. Additionally, nitrogen doping effectively weakens the CO adsorption energy, mitigating the CO-induced catalyst poisoning. With integration with screen-printed electrodes, the portable Pt2.32Co–N10/CNT sensor achieves a high sensitivity of ca. 2.38 nA/ppb and retains over 96% of its initial response after 7 days, alongside a 10-fold improvement in anti-interference ability in the alcohol-rich environment. This advancement holds transformative potential for next-generation electrochemical sensors with broad applications in environmental health, medical diagnostics, and food safety.

In theory, the utilization of a Z-scheme photogenerated carrier transport system has the potential to significantly enhance the photogenerated voltage for photoelectrochemical overall water splitting. However, thus far, there have been no previous reports on such phenomena with silicon-based semiconductor photoelectrodes. In this study, we fabricated an n-Si/Pt/Mo-doped BiVO 4 (Mo: BVO) sandwich-like film with an intermediate carrier transfer layer to prepare a silicon-based photoelectrode with an indirect Z-scheme system. Additionally, by leveraging the lattice distortion effect over Mo: BVO, we increased the fusion ability of the sandwich-like interface between different substances. For the first time, we achieved generation of anodic displacement current via negative voltage (−0.57 V (vs. RHE)), resulting in a photocurrent density of 1.56 mA/cm 2 and a photogenerated voltage five times higher than that of the n-Si/Mo: BVO structure. Through combining experimental approaches with theoretical calculations, it has been confirmed that this realization is attributed to the contribution of the transport process within the Z-scheme system in the n-Si photoelectrode. Furthermore, milliampere-level photocurrent under negative bias was observed for the first time on an n-Si photoelectrode, providing a novel approach for constructing silicon-based photoelectrodes for overall water splitting.
