Two orders-of-magnitude enhancement in the electrochemiluminescence of Ru(bpy)32+ by vertically ordered silica mesochannels

Zhenyu Zhou,Weiliang Guo,Linru Xu,Qian Yang,Bin Su

In this paper, we report significantly enhanced electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of tris(2,2′-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) ( Ru ( bpy ) 3 2 + ) at indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes modified with a thin film consisting of vertically aligned silica mesochannels (SMCs). The perpendicular SMCs allow for the effective mass transport of Ru ( bpy ) 3 2 + and its co-reactants from the solution to the underlying ITO electrode surface. Moreover, due to the ultrasmall diameter (namely 2–3 nm) and the negatively charged surface, SMCs exerted a strong electrostatic attraction to the positively charged Ru ( bpy ) 3 2 + to accelerate its mass transport, resulting in a remarkably increased ECL signal. As a model system, when using tri- n -propylamine (TPrA) as the co-reactant, the intensity of ECL generated at the SMCs-modified ITO electrode was stronger than that at a bare ITO electrode by more than two orders of magnitude (i.e., ∼107-fold increase). In this case, the amount of Ru ( bpy ) 3 2 + required for ECL-based analysis can be considerably reduced. A very low concentration of Ru ( bpy ) 3 2 + , namely 9 μM, was demonstrated to be enough for achieving the sensitive detection of TPrA, nicotine and atropine. Both photomultiplier (PMT) and charge coupled device (CCD) were used to measure the luminescence from the ECL reaction. The obtained detection limits were 0.17 nM for TPrA on the basis of the ECL intensity measurement, 72 nM for nicotine and 38 nM for atropine based on the gray value analysis of captured ECL images.

Electrospinning Ru doped Co3O4 porous nanofibers as promising bifunctional catalysts for oxygen evolution and oxygen reduction reactions

Deshuang Hu,Ruyue Wang,Peng Du,Gang Li,Yonggang Wang,Dongyu Fan,Xuchao Pan

Enhancing the catalytic activity for oxygen evolution and oxygen reduction reactions is critical for rechargeable metal-air batteries. Herein, coral-like Ru-doped cobalt oxide nanofibers are prepared by electrospinning and subsequent heat treatment, which reduce the charge transfer resistance of cobalt oxide and optimize its active sites. Moreover, the large specific surface area and rich porosity of the one-dimensional nanomaterials prepared by the electrospinning method markedly improved the catalytic activity. Under the same catalyst load, Ru-doped cobalt oxide nanofibers have an overpotential of 300 mV, which is smaller than that of ruthenium oxide. In the oxygen reduction reaction, the positive half-wave potential of Ru-doped cobalt oxide nanofibers and Pt/C is the same (0.81 V). This work combines the strategies of doping and the advantages of electrospinning nanofibers to make a breakthrough in the catalytic activity of doped cobalt oxide nanofibers, and provides a new basis for the design of one-dimensional nanofiber bifunctional catalysts.

Construction of Bulky Ligand Libraries by Ru(II)-Catalyzed P(III)-Assisted ortho-C–H Secondary Alkylation

Ming Li,Jun-Yang Tao,Liang-Neng Wang,Jia-Wei Li,Yue-Jin Liu,Ming-Hua Zeng

Modification of commercially available biaryl monophosphine ligands via ruthenium(II)-catalyzed P(III)-directed-catalyzed ortho C–H secondary alkylation is described. The use of highly ring-strained norbornene as a secondary alkylating reagent is the key to this transformation. A series of highly bulky ligands with a norbornyl group were obtained in excellent yields. The modified ligands with secondary alkyl group outperformed common substituted phosphines in the Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction at a ppm mole level of Pd catalyst.

Reconstruction of Fe-doped Ni3S2 into NiOOH enabled by low Ru for high-rate alkaline oxygen evolution

Guilian Li,Jintong Guo,Daming Yang,Hongji Xu,Linglong Hu,Shuo Geng,Ming Feng

Sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics impede alkaline electrolysis. Here, vertically aligned Ru-decorated, Fe-doped Ni 3 S 2 nanowire arrays on Ni foam (Ru-NFS) are synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal route. Distinct from conventional Ni 3 S 2 →NiOOH systems, we operate in a low-Ru, Fe-co-modulated regime where Ru remains S-ligated and highly dispersed, evidenced by the absence of Ru-Ru scattering in EXAFS. This coordination accelerates NiOOH formation, enhances charge transfer, and mitigates Ru loss, yielding Ru-normalized activity beyond single-modulated controls. In 1.0   M KOH (iR-corrected), Ru-NFS requires only 206 and 245   mV to reach 10 and 100   mA   cm -2 , respectively, and sustains stable operation. Mechanistically, COHP analysis shows that Fe substitution and, more strongly, Ru incorporation progressively weaken Ni-S bonds in the precursor, enabling rapid anodic reconstruction to NiOOH. On the reconstructed surface, DOS/PDOS reveal a d-manifold shifted toward EF with increased states, implying higher hole availability and optimized M-O covalency for coupled proton-electron transfer. DFT-CHE at 1.23   V (RHE) identifies *O→*OOH as the thermodynamic RDS, with ΔG reduced from 0.70   eV (NiOOH) to 0.48   eV (Fe-NiOOH) and 0.38   eV (Ru,Fe-NiOOH). Overall, Ru-Fe co-modulation couples reconstruction control with adsorbate-binding optimization, providing a blueprint for robust high-rate OER anodes.

Lattice-Matched Epitaxial Growth between Ru and Titanium Carbide for Efficient Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction in Alkaline Media

Yisha Huang,Shuqi Yu,Ji Zhou,Chaoling Wu,Yun Zhang,Yao Wang

The development of stable and efficient alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) electrocatalysts is critical for advancing alkaline exchange membrane fuel cells. Ruthenium (Ru) shows promise as a HOR catalyst with cost advantages over platinum (Pt) but suffers from low intrinsic activity and oxidation vulnerability. Herein, we combine lattice-matched epitaxial growth with active metal carrier interaction (RMSI). For the first time, a simple impregnation-annealing method was employed to achieve lattice-matched epitaxial growth between Ru nanoparticles and titanium carbide (TiC) during deposition on the TiC surface, providing an efficient and stable interfacial structure for the RMSI. RMSI promotes electron transfer from TiC to Ru, modulates Ru’s electronic structure, and optimizes its hydrogen adsorption Gibbs free energy (△GH*). Experimental data and density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the synergy between the epitaxial structure and RMSI significantly enhances the alkaline HOR activity. Consequently, the Ru/TiC-200 catalyst exhibits a higher kinetic current density than Pt/C, with a performance 5.31 times that of Ru/C.

Dynamic Phase-Evolution-Triggered Strong Metal-Support Interaction Configures Atomic Ru Sites for Superior Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution

Shuyu Jia,Xin Zhang,Yuejia Guo,Jiachen Zhang,Qicheng Liu,Shen Wang,Yawen Tang,Jiali Wang,Yu Wang,Hanjun Sun

Phase engineering effectively modulates the strong metal-support interaction (MSI) in heterogeneous catalysts. However, the dynamic manipulation of MSI through in situ phase transition remains underexplored. Herein, an acid-mediated strategy for in situ 1T→2H phase transformed MoSe 2 has been reported to construct Ru sites (Ru-2H(PT)-MoSe 2 /CC) toward alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction, in contrast to direct Ru sites construction on the static 2H-phase MoSe 2 (Ru-2H-MoSe 2 /CC). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrates that, despite both catalysts sharing the same 2H-phase structure, the phase-evolved Ru-2H(PT)-MoSe 2 /CC exhibits significant electron accumulation at Mo and Se sites, enabling strong electrostatic interaction with the Ru 3+ precursor, which dictates the final atomic configuration of Ru. Combined theoretical and experimental studies demonstrate that this strong MSI preferentially stabilizes Ru as single atoms at Mo sites concurrently with the formation of smaller Ru clusters. In stark contrast, the weak MSI in Ru-2H-MoSe 2 /CC leads to the predominant formation of larger Ru clusters. The resultant Ru-2H(PT)-MoSe 2 /CC yields a low overpotential of 26 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and long-term durability for 500 h at 100 mA cm −2 . In situ Raman spectroscopy and theoretical calculations further corroborate that the unique Ru configuration optimizes interfacial water behavior and accelerates water dissociation kinetics.

Synergistic Co-Conversion of PVC/Cotton Textile to Phthalic Acid and Sorbitol over a Ru/TiO2 Catalyst

Weng Jiali,Liu Zheng,Wang Hongkun,Chu Dawang

Discarded PVC/cotton waterproof materials pose a significant challenge for sustainable recycling due to the release of corrosive HCl and the formation of sintered carbonaceous residues during conventional thermal processing. Here, we report a synergistic catalytic strategy for the co-conversion of PVC/cotton-based waste into value-added chemicals under mild hydrothermal conditions. Initially, Ru/TiO 2 catalyzes the dehydrochlorination of PVC at 190 ° C; the In Situ-generated HCl serves as a Brønsted acid catalyst to hydrolyze cellulose to glucose, followed by hydrogenation to sorbitol in 61.4% yield. The resulting dehydrochlorinated PVC residue undergoes oxidative aromatization to yield aromatic carboxylic acid, with a liquid product yield of 19.5% and a phthalic acid selectivity of 63.7%. Density functional theory calculations attribute the efficient dechlorination to Ru(1015) sites, which lower the activation energy for HCl elimination by 18.76 kJ mol −1 . This catalytic system demonstrates tolerance toward real-world waste composite materials and establishes a novel pathway for the integrated upcycling of halogenated plastics and lignocellulosic biomass. Life-cycle assessment shows 97% lower global warming potential than incineration, advancing resource circularity and sustainable waste management.

Interfacial tensile strain-induced Ru–O bond regulation in lattice-matched heterostructures for robust acidic water electrolysis

Xiaoxiao Duan,Suya Li,Xiuling Jiao,Yuguo Xia,Dairong Chen

Ruthenium oxide is among the most active electrocatalysts for the acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), yet its practical use is severely limited by anodic over-oxidation, lattice-oxygen participation, and the resulting Ru dissolution. Here, we report a monolithic RuO 2 -TiO x /Ti anode directly constructed on Ti felt through a one-step impregnation-calcination strategy, in which the native surface oxide evolves at only 400 °C into a rutile-like TiO x interlayer that is lattice-matched with rutile RuO 2 . The resulting structurally defined RuO 2 -TiO x heterointerface induces interfacial charge redistribution and tensile lattice distortion, thereby modulating the Ru–O coordination environment, attenuating Ru–O covalency, and suppressing excessive lattice-oxygen participation. Operando spectroscopy, isotope-labeling analysis, electrochemical probing, and theoretical calculations collectively reveal that such interfacial regulation shifts acidic OER toward the adsorbate-evolution mechanism while suppressing Ru overoxidation and local structural reconstruction. Beyond active-site modulation, the integrated TiO x interlayer and metallic Ti scaffold provide robust interfacial adhesion, efficient electron transport, and favorable gas/liquid transport under high-rate operation. As a result, RuO 2 -TiO x /Ti delivers an overpotential of 172 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , sustains 50 mA cm −2 for 1000 h with only 18 ppb Ru dissolution, and enables proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis at 1.65 V at 1 A cm −2 . This work highlights lattice-matched heterointerface engineering as an effective strategy for durable acidic OER electrodes. The lattice-matched RuO 2 -TiO x heterointerface induces charge redistribution and tensile distortion, elongating Ru–O bonds, reducing covalency, and suppressing lattice-oxygen participation for highly active and durable acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Engineering Ru nanoclusters on high-entropy MoMnFeCoNiCu LDH for industrial-current-density anion exchange membrane water electrolysis

Yuhang Zhao,Ruixin Tang,Mengyao Liu,Ying Li,Qiuyan Hao,Limin Liang,Hui Liu

Developing efficient and durable electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is pivotal for sustainable hydrogen production. In this study, Ru nanoclusters were successfully anchored onto a high-entropy MoMnFeCoNiCu layered double hydroxide (HE-LDH) substrate. The resulting Ru/HE-LDH heterostructure exhibits exceptional activity, requiring an ultra-low overpotential of only 192 mV to achieve 10 mA cm −2 . Density functional theory (DFT) reveals that the Ru nanoclusters effectively modulate the electronic structure of the high-entropy matrix, optimizing intermediate adsorption energies and lowering the energy barrier for the rate-determining step. Remarkably, the catalyst demonstrates industrial-level stability, maintaining a steady potential for 400 h at near 300 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, in a practical anion-exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE), the Ru/HE-LDH achieves a current density of 1 A cm −2 at just 1.86 V with 300 h. This work provides a significant advancement in designing high-entropy heterostructures for large-scale, efficient green hydrogen production.

Dual-responsive polypyridyl Ru(II)-scaffolded hydrogel for trinitarian tumor therapy activated by mono-wavelength photo-irradiation

Chen Zhendong,Zhou Jiao,Wang Sizhen,Chen Tianheng,Aznarez Francisco,Yan Xintong,Hu Xiaoxiao,Xia Yiling,Sun Linhong,Wang Chen,Yang Feng,Guo Beibei

Metal-coordinated hydrogels offer a strategy to integrate local drug retention, responsive release, and multimodal therapy, but assigning structural and therapeutic roles to a single metal complex remains challenging. Here, we report an injectable polypyridyl Ru(II)-scaffolded hydrogel, Ru(fmb) 3 HADH-PDA@IR780, formed by dynamic Schiff-base crosslinking and loaded with polydopamine nanoparticles carrying IR780. In this platform, PDA@IR780 enables 808 nm near-infrared-activated photothermal and photodynamic outputs whereas the Ru(II) complex functions as both a hydrogel crosslinking unit and a redox-active therapeutic component. This formulation demonstrates dual pH/photo-responsiveness: acidic tumor microenvironment (TME) promoted formulation release, and NIR irradiation triggered rapid local heating and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. In vitro, the hydrogel produced enhanced tumor-cell killing through combined photothermal, photodynamic, and Ru-associated oxidative and chemodynamic therapy (CDT), accompanied by glutathione depletion and lipid-peroxidation-related stress. In vivo, local administration followed by short NIR irradiation markedly suppressed tumor growth, increased tumor-cell apoptosis, prolonged tumor-site retention, and showed no obvious short-term systemic toxicity under the tested regimen. Transcriptomic and histological analyses further suggested treatment-associated redox disruption and favorable modulation of the local immune microenvironment. This Ru(II)-scaffolded hydrogel provides a component-defined, single-wavelength-activated platform for locally retained multimodal tumor therapy. Notably, this work represents the first report of a polypyridyl Ru(II)-scaffolded hydrogel that unifies Ru(II)’s structural coordination with intrinsic therapeutic action, offering a translational strategy for synergistic, site-selective tumor therapy. Synthesis of ethanol via methanol homologation with CO2 and H2 using an industrially relevant Ru–Co catalyst

Longbo Zhang,Jia Guo,Yanyan Wang,Ying Wang,Jie Li,Hongxing Wang,Chenglong Yu,Yanru Zhang,Jun He,Xianyu Meng,Zhuo Zhang,Tianbin Wu,Qingli Qian,Li Tan,Buxing Han

Homogeneously catalyzed ethanol synthesis from CO2 and H2 usually uses expensive, unstable and complex catalyst precursors, hindering their industrial viability. In this work, a homogeneous catalytic system consisting of economic and stable catalyst precursors (RuCl3·3H2O and CoCl2·6H2O), cocatalyst (LiI) and N-ethyl-2-pyrrolidone (NEP) solvent was designed to accelerate ethanol production via methanol homologation with CO2 and H2. After activation of the catalyst precursors at 200 °C with CO, the target reaction could proceed efficiently under mild conditions (170 °C), with top level reaction selectivity (64.9%) and much higher space time yield (STY) of ethanol (3.9 g L−1 h−1) compared to previous reports with Ru/Co catalysts. The impact of activation conditions, reaction conditions, and the catalytic mechanism of the reaction were studied by a series of control experiments. This method of ethanol production has the advantages of a stable and easily available catalyst, excellent performance, and easy separation and recycling of the catalyst, showing great potential for industrialization.

In-situ Ru nanoparticles anchored on MgO-modified TS-1 for selective hydrodeoxygenation of lignin to alkylcyclohexanol

Yun Tian,Menghao Jiang,Jinxing Long

Developing in-situ catalysts featuring good activity for lignin hydrogenolysis is highly desirable, yet remains a great challenge. In this work, we proposed an efficient strategy for selective hydrodeoxygenation of lignin to a versatile petrochemical of alkylcyclohexanol (ACH) using the in-situ Ru nanoparticles anchored on MgO-modified TS-1. The results demonstrated that, with HRO 5 -MgO 20 @TS-1 catalyst, a total monomer yield of 36.4% was shown from the one-pot cascade process of lignin hydrogenolysis and phenolics hydrodeoxygenation. Importantly, 55.8% of obtained monomers were identified as ACH (20.2% yield), which has been widely used as an oxygenated fuel, solvent, and intermediate for functionalized materials. Intensive catalyst characterizations using TEM, XPS, and XAFS revealed that the highly dispersed in-situ Ru 0 species, together with the suitable acid-base properties, are responsible for the superior catalytic performance of HRO 5 -MgO 20 @TS-1 in lignin depolymerization. In addition, a plausible reaction pathway for ACH formation has been proposed, according to the results of comparative characterization of raw and regenerated lignin, and the performance of lignin model conversion. Therefore, this work provides a new insight into producing value-added alkylcyclohexanol from the renewable lignin.
