Partially etched Ti2AlN/Ti2N/TiN ternary composite as a synergistic catalyst for enhanced hydrogen storage kinetics and cycling stability of NaAlH4

Chen Jin,Lingfeng Wang,Zhenke Chen,Hang Che,Shuzhong Wang,Zhiheng Liu,Tao Chen,Li Wang,Yuyuan Zhao,Xinhua Wang,Haoyuan Zheng,Haizhen Liu,Mi Yan

This study presents the preparation of a partially etched Ti 2 AlN-derived composite with a combination of Ti 2 N, residual Ti 2 AlN, and in-situ TiN nanoparticles. The resultant two-dimensional ternary composite was used as a catalyst to enhance the hydrogen storage capacity of NaAlH 4 .Although NaAlH 4 possesses a high theoretical hydrogen storage capacity of 7.4 wt%, its practical application is plagued by several problems: high temperature (~180 °C) to release hydrogen, slow kinetics, and poor reversibility. Herein, Ti 2 N was prepared by etching the Ti 2 AlN MAX phase. The results show that the catalytic effect is optimal when the Ti 2 N content is 7.5 wt%, with the starting temperatures of the two-step hydrogen release from NaAlH₄ decreasing from 180 °C and 260 °C to 98.4 °C and 163.3 °C, respectively. Meanwhile, the apparent activation energies of the two-step reactions decrease from 128 kJ/mol and 160 kJ/mol to 66.0 kJ/mol and 91.6 kJ/mol, respectively, with the kinetic performance significantly improved. Importantly, Ti 2 N/NaAlH 4 composites retain more than 95% of their hydrogen storage capacity after 10 cycles. Detailed characterizations using XRD, XPS, and TEM disclosed that the coexistence of multi-phases in Ti 2 N/NaAlH 4 composites induces synergistic catalytic effects: stable Ti 2 AlN provides electrically conductive pathways, while the reversible phase transformation between TiAl and TiAlH x occurs at the interface and nano-sized TiN transformed into TiAl 3 , enabling improved hydrogen gas dissociation. Collectively, these results provide new fundamental insights into optimizing the properties of Ti 2 N MXenes as catalysts in complex hydride hydrogen storage materials and establish key design principles to inspire the development of various composite materials for efficient and practical solid-state hydrogen storage systems.

Simultaneous enhancement of chlorine evolution and ozone production by tin-platinum co-doped TiO2-RuO2/Ti electrodes for effective water purification

Xiaoyang Song,Yan Wang,Xiaohua Ren,Xu Zhao

TiRuSnPt electrodes with nanoporous structure were fabricated. • Sn Pt co-doping enhances TiRu for dual CER and EOP functionality. • TiRuSnPt electrodes efficiently degrades organics mainly via in-situ generated O 3 and 1 O 2 . • 100% BPA degradation maintains over 240 h under periodic polarity reversal. The electrochemical generation of free chlorine and ozone for the degradation of organic pollutants in water holds broad application prospects. While traditional TiO 2 -RuO 2 /Ti (TiRu) electrodes exhibit favorable chlorine evolution performance in chloride-containing systems, their oxidation capability is limited under chloride-free or low-chloride conditions. To extend the applicability of electrodes in various water matrices, this study developed a TiRuSnPt electrode with simultaneously enhanced electrochemical chlorine evolution (CER) and electrochemical ozone production (EOP) via a tin‑platinum co-doping on TiRu strategy. The TiRuSnPt electrode achieves excellent CER activity that exhibits a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 67% under low-chloride conditions at 50 mM Cl − . Moreover, the incorporation of tin and platinum enhances the EOP capability of TiRu, overcoming the limitations of conventional TiRu in chloride-free systems for water purification. In chloride-free electrolytes, the ozone and reactive oxygen species generated by TiRuSnPt can efficiently degrade various organic pollutants, such as bisphenol A (BPA) that achieving 99.7% removal within 6 min. TiRuSnPt exhibited high stability under polarity reversal conditions, that can maintain 100% BPA removal and over 80% of total organic carbon removal in a continuous BPA degradation system for more than 240 h. The high stability was due to tin‑platinum co-doping on TiRu, of which the accelerated lifetime increases by 2.6 times for TiRuSnPt compared to TiRu. This work provides a feasible strategy for developing multifunctional TiRuSnPt electrodes with high-efficiency chlorine evolution and ozone production capabilities, thereby broadening their application scopes in water treatment. A molecularly imprinted electrochemical aptasensor based on graphene and tin dioxide composite with electrodeposited gold nanoparticles for dual recognition of enrofloxacin

Ying Wang,Shanshan Fu,Zhengyuan Dai,Yinuo Liu,Xiaoyu Yang,Li Li,Yaping Ding

In this work, a molecularly imprinted electrochemical aptamer sensor (MIEAS) for the detection of enrofloxacin (ENR) was developed using SnO 2 -graphene (SnO 2 -Gr) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as electrode modification materials. The SnO 2 -Gr composite material has a large specific surface area and can enhance the conductivity of the sensing platform. The aptamer, serving as a biofunctional monomer, was immobilized on the electrode surface via Au-S bonds. Using ENR as the template molecule and nicotinamide (NA) as the chemical functional monomer, a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) film was prepared by electropolymerization. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of MIP and aptamer, this MIEAS exhibits a good linear relationship with ENR in the range of 10 −14 to 10 −5  M, and the detection limit is as low as 1.65 × 10 −15  M. Satisfactory recovery was obtained in milk and environmental water samples, indicating the potential for application in food and environmental analysis.

Sn3B8O15: A Ternary Tin(II) Borate with Flexible [B8O18]12– Fundamental Building Block Formed by [B7O16]11– and [BO3]3– Groups

Siru Guo,Wenbin Zhang,Min Zhang,Zhihua Yang,Shilie Pan

Owing to the tendency to form the glass state in growing crystals in the ternary tin(II) borate system, hitherto, very few single crystals in ternary tin(II) borate were reported. In this paper, a single crystal of Sn3B8O15 was obtained via a high temperature solution method in a closed system. The structure features a flexible fundamental building block [B8O18]12– constructed by one [BO3]3– unit and one [B7O16]11– group that contains three hexatomic rings, which further connect to compose a two-dimensional 2∞[B8O15] layer structure. The connection mode and flexibility of the three hexatomic B-O rings were analyzed, verifying the structural diversity of the B-O configuration. Moreover, the synthesis, crystal structure, and various characterizations were comprehensively presented. Also, theoretical calculations were employed to discuss structure-property relationships, and we use the real-space atom-cutting techniques to explain the origin of the birefringence of Sn3B8O15.

Mesoporous Tin-Based Oxide Nanospheres/Reduced Graphene Composites as Advanced Anodes for Lithium-Ion Half/Full Cells and Sodium-Ion Batteries

Yanyan He,Aihua Li,Caifu Dong,Chuanchuan Li,Liqiang Xu

The large volume variations of tin-based oxides hinder their extensive application in the field of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In this study, structure design, hybrid fabrication, and carbon-coating approaches have been simultaneously adopted to address these shortcomings. To this end, uniform mesoporous NiO/SnO 2 @rGO, Ni-Sn oxide@rGO, and SnO 2 @rGO nanosphere composites have been selectively fabricated. Among them, the obtained NiO/SnO 2 @rGO composite exhibited a high capacity of 800 mAh g −1 at 1000 mA g −1 after 400 cycles. The electrochemical mechanism of NiO/SnO 2 as an anode for LIBs has been preliminarily investigated by ex situ XRD pattern analysis. Furthermore, an NiO/SnO 2 @rGO-LiCoO 2 lithium-ion full cell showed a high capacity of 467.8 mAh g −1 at 500 mA g −1 after 100 cycles. Notably, the NiO/SnO 2 @rGO composite also showed good performance when investigated as an anode for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). It is believed that the unique mesoporous nanospherical framework, synergistic effects between the various components, and uniform rGO wrapping of NiO/SnO 2 shorten the Li + ion diffusion pathways, maintain sufficient contact between the active material and the electrolyte, mitigate volume changes, and finally improve the electrical conductivity of the electrode. Graphical High performance : A series of tin-based oxides@rGO composites with microporous or mesoporous nanospherical structures has been fabricated from the same precursor of NiSn(OH) 6 nanospheres by a facile hydrothermal method (see figure). The resultant materials demonstrated enhanced electrochemical performances when applied as anodes for lithium-ion and sodium-ion half cells, and lithium-ion full cells.

Preparation and characterization of UV curable waterborne poly(urethane-acrylate)/antimony doped tin oxide thermal insulation coatings by sol-gel process

Kaihua Wu,Shanglin Xiang,Weiqiang Zhi,Renji Bian,Chenchen Wang,Dongyu Cai

The composite of waterborne poly(urethane-acrylate) (WPUA) and antimony doped tin (ATO) was a promising thermal insulation coatings for energy-saving glass. This work demonstrated a sol-gel approach for fabricating WPUA/ATO composites with improved dispersion of ATO nanoparticles . This approach was mainly concerned with the polymerization of C C bonds pre-attached to WPU and ATO nanoparticles . Surface modification was key for achieving a good dispersion of ATO nanoparticles. With UV-assisted initiation, the conversion of C C bonds reached ∼93% in 40   s. The comparison study demonstrated that resulting ATO-filled WPUA coatings outperformed those made by physical blending method over the mechanical and optical properties owing to a good dispersion of ATO nanoparticles. In particular, the coatings filled with 3   wt% ATO reduced the temperature of a designed “room” by ∼10   °C than un-filled counterparts, but merely blocked ∼16% visible light.

Electron redistribution via two-dimensional van der Waals heterojunctions boosts trifunctional electrocatalysis in sandwich-like structured Co-MOF/TiN/NC composite

Mengyao Zhao,Can Sun,Xiang Li,Ya Zhao,Guosheng Shao,Peng Zhang,Yige Zhao

Two-dimensional van der Waals heterojunctions (2D vdWHs) have received significant attention owing to their extraordinary properties such as the reduced energy barriers and efficient charge transfer. However, there is limited research about the construction of 2D vdWHs in electrocatalysts for improving multifunctional performance. Herein, we report a sandwich-like structured Co-MOF/TiN/NC-240 electrocatalyst with 2D vdWHs by one-step high-temperature solid-state and room-temperature ultrasonication methods, with 2D Co-MOF nanosheets uniformly assembled on the TiN/NC substrate. Ultraviolet Photoelectron Spectroscopy (UPS) reveal that the work function difference between Co-MOF and TiN/NC drives electron transfer from TiN/NC to Co-MOF, thereby modulating the metal oxidation state. The Co-MOF/TiN/NC-240 electrocatalyst exhibits boosted trifunctional electrocatalytic performances for ORR, OER, and HER , which can be attributed to the successful construction of 2D vdWHs, inducing effective electron redistribution via the heterogeneous interface and increasing the number of active sites. Moreover, the zinc-air battery (ZAB) and water-splitting device based on Co-MOF/TiN/NC-240 exhibit enhanced discharge capacity and superior efficiency, respectively. This study not only provides an effective design strategy to develop trifunctional electrocatalysts by constructing 2D vdWHs but also offers valuable insights into the enhanced electrocatalytic performance in the sustainable energy field.

Roll-to-roll fabrication of lithiophilic Sn-modified Cu mesh via chemical tin plating approach for long-cycling lithium metal batteries

Liu Ke-Xin,Tan Ran,Zheng Zhong,Zhao Rui-Rui,Ülgüt Burak,Ai Xin-Ping,Qian Jiang-Feng

Lithium metal, with its exceptionally high theoretical capacity, emerges as the optimal anode choice for high-energy-density rechargeable batteries. Nevertheless, the practical application of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) is constrained by issues such as lithium dendrite growth and low Coulombic efficiency (CE). Herein, a roll-to-roll approach is adopted to prepare meter-scale, lithiophilic Sn-modified Cu mesh (Sn@Cu mesh) as the current collector for long-cycle lithium metal batteries. The two-dimensional (2D) nucleation mechanism on Sn@Cu mesh electrodes promotes a uniform Li flux, facilitating the deposition of Li metal in a large granular morphology. Simultaneously, experimental and computational analyses revealed that the distribution of the electric field in the Cu mesh skeleton induces Li inward growth, thereby generating a uniform, dense composite Li anode. Moreover, the Sn@Cu mesh-Li symmetrical cell demonstrates stable cycling for over 2000 h with an ultra-low 10 mV voltage polarization. In Li||Cu half-cells, the Sn@Cu mesh electrode demonstrates stable cycling for 100 cycles at a high areal capacity of 5 mAh·cm −2 , achieving a CE of 99.2%. This study introduces a simple and large-scale approach for the production of lithiophilic three-dimensional (3D) current collectors, providing more possibilities for the scalable application of Li metal batteries. Tin Nanodots Derived From Sn2+/Graphene Quantum Dot Complex as Pillars into Graphene Blocks for Ultrafast and Ultrastable Sodium-Ion Storage

Zheng Liu,Su Zhang,Zhipeng Qiu,Chao Huangfu,Lin Wang,Tong Wei,Zhuangjun Fan

Tin (Sn) is considered to be an ideal candidate for the anode of sodium ion batteries. However, the design of Sn-based electrodes with maintained long-term stability still remains challenging due to their huge volume expansion (≈420%) and easy pulverization during cycling. Herein, a facile and versatile strategy for the synthesis of nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dot (GQD) edge-anchored Sn nanodots as the pillars into reduced graphene oxide blocks (NGQD/Sn-NG) for ultrafast and ultrastable sodium-ion storage is reported. Sn nanodots (2–5 nm) anchored at the edges of “octopus-like” GQDs via covalent Sn  O  C/Sn  N  C bonds function as the pillars that ensure fast Na-ion/electron transport across the graphene blocks. Moreover, the chemical and spatial (layered structure) confinements not only suppress Sn aggregation, but also function as physical barriers for buffering volume change upon sodiation/desodiation. Consequently, the NGQD/Sn-NG with high structural stability exhibits excellent rate performance (555 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and 198 mAh g −1 at 10 A g −1 ) and ultra-long cycling stability (184 mAh g −1 remaining even after 2000 cycles at 5 A g −1 ). The confinement-induced synthesis together with remarkable electrochemical performances should shed light on the practical application of highly attractive tin-based anodes for next generation rechargeable sodium batteries.

Boosting Thermal and Mechanical Properties: Achieving High-Safety Separator Chemically Bonded with Nano TiN Particles for High Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Qian Zhao,Xiulong Wu,Shenghu Li,Qiaotian Zheng,Shuai Jiang,Ye Xu,Bin He,Ling Ma,Yangtong Luo,Yujue Wang,Wanglai Cen,Yan Meng,Dan Xiao

Currently, the commercial separator (Celgard2500) of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) suffers from poor electrolyte affinity, mechanical property and thermal stability, which seriously affect the electrochemical performances and safety of LIBs. Here, the composite separators named PVDF-HFP/TiN for high-safety LIBs are synthesized. The integration of PVDF-HFP and TiN forms porous structure with a uniform and rich organic framework. TiN significantly improves the adsorption between PVDF-HFP and electrolyte, causing a higher electrolyte absorption rate (192%). Meanwhile, XPS results further demonstrate the tight link between PVDF-HFP and TiN due to the existence of Ti  F bond in PVDF-HFP/TiN, resulting in a strong impediment for the puncture of lithium dendrites as a result of the improved mechanical strengths. And PVDF-HFP/TiN can effectively suppress the growth of lithium dendrites by means of uniform lithium flux. In addition, the excellent heat resistance of TiN improves the thermal stability of PVDF-HFP/TiN. As a result, the LiFePO 4 ||Li cells assembled PVDF-HFP/TiN-12 exhibit excellent specific capacity, rate performance, and capacity retention rate. Even the high specific capacity of 153 mAh g −1 can be obtained at the high temperature of 80 °C. Meaningfully, a reliable modification strategy for the preparation of separators with high safety and electrochemical performance in LIBs is provided.

Fine-tuning the Cross-Sectional Architecture of Antimony-doped Tin Oxide Nanofibers as Pt Catalyst Support for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Activity

Shuxiao Chen,Hongda Du,Yinping Wei,Lingyi Peng,Yadong Li,Lin Gan,Feiyu Kang

We report the fabrication of electrospun antimony-doped tin oxides (ATO) nanofibers (NFs) with controlled cross-sectional architectures ranging from solid dense NFs via fiber-in-tube NFs to completely hollow tube-like NFs at otherwise constant conditions. These ATO NFs were further applied as catalyst supports on which Pt nanoparticles were electrodeposited. Our results show that the Pt nanoparticles deposited on the hollow ATO NFs exhibited a higher catalytic activity on oxygen reduction reaction compared to those supported on solid ATO NFs and conventional ATO powders. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the Pt nanoparticles deposited on the hollow ATO NFs were spontaneously confined into the hollow channels of the NFs, which likely induced a nano-confinement effect and hence higher catalytic activity. Our results provide important insight into rational control of the mesostructures of metal oxides supported fuel cell catalysts for enhance catalytic properties.

Facile hydrogel-derived sub-10 nm tin–iron alloy embedded in 3D carbon nanocorals with improved cycle life and rate capability

Zhang Anping,Shi Hongxia,Liu Weiqi,Wang Xiaojun,Zhou Yiming,Wu Ping

Tin-based alloys have been regarded as promising anodes to replace commercial carbon materials for Li-ion batteries, but their Li-storage performance, especially cycle life, still fails to meet the requirements for electric vehicles and large-scale electricity storages. Herein, we propose a facile and scalable hydrogel-derived route for uniformly immobilizing sub-10 nm Sn-based alloys within three-dimensional (3D) carbon nanocorals, using polymer-hybridized cyano-bridged coordination polymer hydrogels (cyanogels) as precursors. As a representative example, 3D Sn–Fe@C nanocorals have been constructed through freeze-drying and thermal-autoreduction processes using polyethylene glycol (PEG) hybridized Sn(IV)–Fe(II) cyanogels as precursors. PEG plays critical roles in structural tailoring of hybrid cyanogels and size control of Sn–Fe alloys, and as a result, the average alloy size in optimized Sn–Fe@C nanocoral is only 5.9 nm. The ultrasmall alloy size, uniform dispersity of alloy, as well as coral-like framework structure, enable the Sn–Fe@C nanocorals to exhibit long-term cyclic life and high-rate performance.
